June 15, 2006 - Msg 39395: To Lucy Msg 39354, I followed your advice and didn't have chili for lunch. That's because I'm having it right now for supper!!! Actually, I did not have any chili side effects all night last night. I'm expecting the same for tonight. I just love that chili.

Sterling Holobyte, Msg 39368, since you have already accepted an offer, I don't see how the buyer can back out no matter what the inspector finds (unless they can prove serious and intentional deception on your part). They should have had the inspection beforehand to use as a price bargaining tool. Also, when they made their offer, did you consider countering with a higher price to hopefully compromise somewhere in the middle? You could have gotten a few more thousand in profit to cover closing expenses. Then again if you had countered, it's possible they could have changed their minds and looked elsewhere. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose.

Barnwannabe, here are some suggestions for your TAGSRWC outing:
#1 - Charades guessing character names, or episode titles, etc.
#2 - Pickle eating contest.
#3 - Impersonation contest for those who either look, sound or act like a TAGS character. You don't need props or costumes for this.
#4 - Here is something that is not TAGS related but attracts a lot of attention. A raw egg toss game. Pair up couples in a straight line with females on one side and males on the other. Each couple faces their partner standing about three feet apart. One throws a raw egg to the other. If the egg is caught or dropped and remains unbroken, that couple remains in the game. The next couple then does the same. And so on down the line to the last couple. Then both partners of each couple take one average step backwards and begin tossing again one couple at a time. The last couple that has an unbroken egg wins some kind of prize like a couple dozen eggs. We do this at our American Legion picnic every year and it atracts the most participants and interest from the crowd.

For awile their, they were realesing the seasons rapidly , but I guess the color seasons arn't as popular and there is no rush to get them out their. Mayberry Trivia? I think TAGSRC has abit of trivia, but I dont know anywhere else. Im sure if you really searched youd find tons though! Thanks for your suggestions Poor Harioto , but I will still pass. I know all of you are probally great people and I do trust you, but I just dont feel comfterble. Be-sides I dont have much to complain about in my life!

June 15, 2006 - Msg 39400: Barnwannabe, after reading #4 in my Msg 39395, I'm not sure if I made an important point clear. After the entire line of couples toss their eggs, for the couples with unbroken eggs, both partners back up one step. They toss again one couple at a time. And again after all the couples have thrown, they back up another step. They keep doing this until they are so far apart that most eggs will get broken even if they are caught. Watching the people smeared with dripping sticky egg yolk on their body parts and clothing is hilarious.

And to Deputy Warren Msg 39397, if you don't feel comfortable, I understand. You are still most welcome here. Plus can still offer comfort and support to those who do decide to post personal problems. And we're here to offer you comfort and support when you decide to make it known to us.

June 15, 2006 - Msg 39402: Hi Poor Horatio,
Yes, we did counter with a higher offer, and they went up $1000 from their initial bid. Then, because we didn't want to keep on having a counter-offering war like we did the last time, we just gave our last and final price, which happened to be the lowest we were going to go. So, we're happy with it.
I'm glad to hear that about if they back out. The realtor did tell us when we signed the counter-offer papers, that we could sue them if they did back out. I'm just not a suing type of guy. :) Too much Mayberry in me, I guess.

BTW, this couldn't come at a better time. Most of you probably don't know what I am talking about, but what happened last year is already starting to raise it's ugly head concerning my SIL, and I really don't want to go through that c**p again this summer(sorry, that wasn't very Mayberry-ish of me was it)
But MDC, you probably know what I am talking about.;)
How is your new job going, anyway?

Hope everyone is doing well!

June 15, 2006 - Msg 39412: Barnwannabe , The Time Tunnel is basically about this crew or american science group who create a method of traveling through time. However on the first episode the president (or someone like that) come's to see if it's worth investing money into and when he is dissapointed, Tony (James Darren) jumps into the tunnel and goes back in time to The Titantic. To save Tony , Doug (Robert Colbert) jumps into the tunnel. However the crew can not recieve them back to their origanal time 1968 and to keep them alive has to send transfer them to any time period,
From their they travel to numerous time's , including the french revolution , the war and into the future. They also go WAY back in time alot! Awsome show , allways entertaining and fresh just like TAGS , The Munsters or Bonanza.

The show only lasted one year. That is disapointing to me because a Time Traveling show has so many possibilites! It's endless! Think About It!

If I could produce, direct or write a new show , I would do a Time Traveling show. Think about it. Comedy is all washed up these day's and will never be like TAGS , The Munsters or Gilligans Island again. Western's ran it's course from about 1954-1972.
So for me a good Science Fiction show is the best opition available out their , And Time Traveling work's best because the episodes could go on forever! It's insane when you think about it! All the important dates going back in time, all the possibilites for the future.

Time Travel is REAL cool to me and I love exploring it in any way.

I run the WBMUTBB Digest and EVERYBODY there has to give their name, City and State. You'd be surprised how much more like "some body" folks ask when they are held accountable for their words. Just the fact that other folks can find out their names makes most folks behave in a real Mayberry fashion.

I do, of course, protect their names and information so only other WBMUTBB Members can look at them.

June 16, 2006 - Msg 39463: To Lucy Msg 39417, for the time being, you can cross between Canada and the USA by using a birth certificates along with a photo I.D. This only applies to Canadian and US citizens. However, as an indirect result of 9/11, this is supposed to change by the end of this year when everyone will need a passport to cross. But Canada and USA are trying to come up with an easier alternative for their own citizens. We'll just have to wait and see. I've got my passport application ready just in case.

To Barnwannbe, since you are apprehensive about emailing a person you don't really know, allow me to offer this information.
First of all, the IP address Floyd mentions in Msg 39440 is the Internet Protocol address that is necessary to send messages to the correct recipient. It is similar to your house address. If a letter is sent to you without indicating your house address, it can't get delivered. For the server where The Front Porch is located, the IP address is www.tagsrwc.com. The exact location in the database on that server where The Front Porch posting page is located is http://www.tagsrwc.com/chitchat/index.html, and this is called the Universal Resource Locator (URL). As you can see, the IP is part of the URL.
All computer servers directly connected to the internet have been assigned a unique IP address. Everytime anything is sent over the internet, the IP address of the sender and receiver is included in the hidden header of those messages. Many servers record and save the header information (which includes the source IP address) from everything they receive over the internet. I suspect even the computer server that Floyd uses for The Front Porch records and saves this information. It's a way of tracing the source of everything it receives.
To trace a message you send on the internet, all anyone has to do is examine the header for the source IP address. That will tell them who your Internet Service Provider (ISP) is. Then with a court order, they can force your ISP to trace through their logs and identify who was using a specific port at a specific time on a specific date. That will trace back to your specific account.
Here are some safety functions for you to try. Whenever there is an email address link in a message or email, move your cursor over the link but don't click on it. Then look at your task bar. A URL will appear in your task bar. If this does not match exactly the text in the link, then it's FAKE!!! Example ... Suppose the link in the message displays www.ebay.com. But when you move your cursor over the link and check the task bar, you see www.123.456.789.com/register.html displayed. This is not an exact match so this is obviously a fake link.
Here at the front porch, move your cursor over the link that Floyd provided in Msg 39440 but don't click. In your task bar, you should see mailto:floyd@mayberry.com. Then move your cursor over the "LET ME KNOW IF THE PORCH NEEDS A SWEEP" link at the bottom of this page. The task bar should be displaying mailto:floyd@mayberry.com. Since the two match exactly, I think you can take comfort that the link in Msg 39440 is legitimate. I hope my explanations were clear enough for you to understand.

June 16, 2006 - Msg 39466: Romeena, I'm glad my information is helpful to you. Regarding all that suspicious email I get about me ebay and paypal accounts, I forward a copy to spoof@ebay.com and spoof@paypal.com to report them. Supposedly these companies investigate each one they receive.
Here are more points to consider when examining suspicious emails:
#1 - Many of the fake emails have misspelled words and other grammatical errors involving capitalization of letters and punctuation.
#2 - Any legitimate email you receive from a service that you use will address you specifically by your name they have on file. All of the suspicious emails I receive do not address me by name.
#3 - Check all links in an email by using the task bar technique I explained in Msg 39463. Some fake emails will include one or two legitimate links.
#4 - Do all of these preventive techniques BEFORE you click on any links or open any attachments!!!

from Poor Horatio

June 16, 2006 - Msg 39467: Hey Poor Horatio...

That was a pretty good explaination but you missed it just one small amount.

The IP address is the "number" of your machine. All computers must have an IP address of one type or another. TAGSRWC.com is a domain name. The IP address for TAGSRWC.com is 65.254.55.162.

Look at IP addresses more like the "phone number" of your computer. A database keeps up with the "name" of your computer and by that name you can look up the "phone number" (IP address) of a given machine. Like a phone book gives you the phone number of a person based on the name, the DNS servers provide the IP address of a computer based on its name.

We do, indeed, track all the IPs of folks that post here. Most sites do. It's only used with there are problems and the webmasters need to figure out what's happening.

Everything else was right on. Good work!

June 16, 2006 - Msg 39468: Thanks, PH. I knew about spoof@paypal.com, and always forward any Paypal stuff to them. I didn't know about spoof@ebay.com, but now I do, Thanks! I had noticed the misspellings and grammmatical errors, and that was a big tipoff. Also, they do not address me by the name on file, and that's another glaring error. Finally, I would NEVER click on any links or answer any questions in such emails. If they're forwardable to Paypal, and now to Ebay, they get forwarded. If not, poof! They're deleted.

Of course, this hard-line policy cost me ten million dollars yesterday. A kindly Christian Nigerian woman, who inherited a large sum of money from her philanthropist husband, and who will herself be dead of cancer within three months, wanted to give her fortune to me, knowing I can be trusted to put it to good use, as her dear husband would have wished. All I needed to do was call her trusted lawyer, whose phone number she so helpfully provided, and arrangements would be made to convey the money to me. Alas, being the suspicious person that I am, I just deleted her message. So sad - all that money lost! (sniff!)

June 16, 2006 - Msg 39471: Thanks Poor Horatio!!! I don't try to be aprehensive about it, but there are so many weirdos in the world today, you have to be careful. Thanks for explaining it in that way. Floyd, if you track the computer that I am putting something on here on, can you tell where I am at, without a court order??? I haven't put anything bad on here, so does that mean that I am okay??? Thanks, and Hey fellow porchsters!!! Barnwannabe

June 16, 2006 - Msg 39472: Hey Floyd, thanks for your input. I realize that the IP address is actually composed of a large 12 digit number (four groups of three separated by periods), and through a Domain Name Server (DNS), it gets associated with a easily remembered text names. But I wanted to keep my explanation brief.

And to Romeena Msg 39468, I have also turned down multiple chances to become a muli-millionaire from some nice Nigerian people. I didn't want to be placed in a higher tax bracket. ;)

June 16, 2006 - Msg 39473: I figured you did know..PH. You explained the rest too well to not have known.

Barnwannabe, technically yes. Someone can track you to your city with an IP address most of the time. I have to say Barnwannabe, you realize we have to make sure you're not a "nut" too, right? ha ha...

You can't just assume that everybody is someone out to get you. I mean, you CAN but what kind of life would that be. To avoid one "nut," you'll surely miss out on 1,000's of good people who would have enriched your life.

June 16, 2006 - Msg 39474: You're right, Floyd. I'm careful - I have a burglar alarm system that is very comprehensive, I lock my doors, and I screen my phone calls, but I live my life at the same time and enjoy it. I come and go as I please, and when I am given the chance to go home early from work at an odd hour, I do it, but I call security for an escort to my car. I'm not a scaredy-cat, but I'm not stupid, either. The truth is, there is plenty of information available about all of us, if one knows where it is and how to access it. I found a long-lost cousin by doing an internet search on his name. It pulled up four names, and I emailed them all. One of them was indeed my cousin, and we've been in touch ever since. He's in Wisconsin, but he comes to visit about once a year, and I'm glad I was able to find him.

Recently someone emailed me the startling news that I could go to a certain website and put my name in there, and it would pull up my address and my phone number! It would even give me a map showing how to find my house! Horrors! I tried it, and sure enough, it worked. Pretty scary stuff, until I realized that anyone with a phone book and a city map could get the same information, no computer needed. The same can be done with your phone number - enter that and it will give your name and address. We used to call them criss-cross directories, back in the olden days. Buckeye, I'll bet you remember those.

Oh, and just to make sure that no one sleeps tonight, did you know that every time you write a check for your groceries or a pair of shoes, you have given someone your name, address, probably your phone number, possibly your driver's license number, and definitely your checking account number? Just food for thought....

Sugarplum says 10-4. --Romeena

June 16, 2006 - Msg 39475: Floyd, that's no problem, but have you, and do you plan on tracking me to a city, or even house??? I know that I am a freak about this, and you're right about the NUT thing. I'm not, but I understand that you have to make sure. Have you already tracked me??? Thanks. Barnwannabe

June 16, 2006 - Msg 39476: Romeena, Why'd you have to make me think about that??? I don't even like giving ya'll my info, let alone a 20 year old at a cash register!!!LOL!!! Barnwannabe

June 16, 2006 - Msg 39477: Floyd , ya asking me for your email address to? Ive been thinking and thought, the idea of giving us the ability of removing messages would be better. If the porch has survived this long without passwords and email addresses why cant we just keep using the BIG FREEZE? I like just droping in at the porch and posting, not having to go through a whole bunch of password and email stuff! I also feel more private and safe without giving my address. Giving us the ability to remove would be good because we could get rid of the ugly bad post's quiker. Also how often do we have intruders? I havent seen one since the last one and befour that there werent to many either. FLOYD , please listen (or rather read) my opinion! I dont want to get into a war or anything on the porch but please give this way a chance!

Deputy Warren Ferguson

June 16, 2006 - Msg 39478: Warren, I agree!!! I just wish you said that before I gave my address. I thought that if I didn't, ya'll would all think that I was some kind of a NUT for being so secretive. I hate giving out personal info. I'm with Warren, Floyd. Please try this. Anybody else here feel the same way??? I don't want to start anything, either, and not to offend anybody, but If my personal info gets out, my cousin who is an officer in the FBI, will be glad to come a lookin' for whoever gives it out. Ya'll are all nice people, but I never know who I'm giving info to. Please try it this way Floyd. I didn't even give you my address, I gave you my work address. But I still don't want it given out. Thanks for giving this some thought Floyd. I don't want to leave, but I will if I have to. Thanks.
Barnwannabe.

June 16, 2006 - Msg 39479: I'm sorry, Warren and Barnwannabe, but I don't think I agree. If Floyd decides to do it the way you want, that's fine and I'll go along, but I don't think that's going to solve the problem. Neither of you were here a few months ago when we had some really serious trash on the porch, stuff that would turn your stomach. Personally, I'd prefer that it not even appear, and I don't want to have to wait for Floyd or a deputy to remove it. It's better if it just doesn't happen. What you two have seen so far is extremely mild compared to what has happened in the past, and it could happen again. It's not a perfect world, and just like I have to unlock my car before I can get in it, I would have no problem with "unlocking" the porch in order to post.

Barnwannabe, I was half-joking in 39474 above, but the truth is, your personal information is already "out", unless you don't use a checking account, have no credit cards, no driver's license, and don't own any property. Did you know you can pick any house on any street, and by going to the right websites, you can find out who owns it? Once you have that, you can look them up in the phone book, unless they've chosen to pay for an unlisted number. So, unless you're in a witness protection program or something, you really can't keep any secrets. This porch website is the least of our worries. --Romeena

June 16, 2006 - Msg 39480: Evening porchesters. Hope you all are well this evening. SPOT: Thanks for the pizza and the fishing. I will even bait my own hook! I agree with Romeena, giving my e mail to Floyd is the least of my worries. I have seen Floyd in person at the Mayberry at Meadowview Reunions that were held at Meadowview Conference Center near my house. These conferences were held 2 or 3 years in a row and were wonderful. Many of the cast members (Barney, Earnest T, Miss Ellie, the Darlings, Malcom Merriwether, Charlene, They guy who played Duke on Gomer Pyle, and several others) were there. It was an awesome experience for me due to my love for the show. "Floyd" was there and seems to be just as sincere and honest as they come and shares the love of the show with the rest of us and actually does a great job of being the real "Floyd". I sincerely believe he would not misuse our emails for anything in the world. You all have to do what you think is best for you but again I agree with Romeena. Big Maude

June 16, 2006 - Msg 39481: Well Floyd, the sooner, the better. What are you going to decide to do? Hate to pressure you, but I would like to know so I can decide if im staying or im going. Would hate to leave the porch, but it's my descision and I will do what I feel is right. Big Muade were you saying the real Don Knotts was there? Boy if so your real lucky!

P.S. What are you going to do Barnwannabe, I would hate to see you go! I feel like I fit in with you around on the porch because your farely new yourself! Oh well, I might leave if worst come's to worst to.

Deputy Warren Ferguson

June 16, 2006 - Msg 39482: That's fine Romeena, but I don't have a home phone, my only worry is the Checking. I know that ya'll are all nice, and I do trust ya'll, but it ain't Mayberry no more. I don't mind it if Floyd has my e-mail address, just so long as he's the ONLY one who does. He already has it, so no sence arguing about it. I don't mind the password, either. Floyd, if you e-mail me, and it doesn't work, let me know on here. Thanks,
Barnwannabe. P.s. : Romeena, you have some very good points there.

June 16, 2006 - Msg 39483: If we had a live full-time monitoring watch at The Front Porch, then we would not need any security measures since as soon as an offensive post appears, it could be deleted.
So unless the majority are willing to allow offensive postings to remain for awhile until they get deleted, then we need security measures.

To Big Maude Msg 39480, what year was that Meadowview Reunion?

As for giving my email address to Floyd, I have done that. Afterall, he trusts us by posting his own email address.

from Poor Horatio

June 16, 2006 - Msg 39484: Deputy Warren and Barnwannabe, I'm curious about something. Would you two remain if things remained the same here without any security measures?
I ask because you two have been very active participants here. And if you left, you would definitely be missed.

from Poor Horatio

June 16, 2006 - Msg 39485: Poor Horatio, I probally would stay if their were no security measures added. I hate to sound spoild but I am just causious and I have heard all of your guy's point's about the security, but I guess Im stubborn when it come's to that stuff. I must say I would hate to leave because I enjoy the porch so much! Everyone is so nice and helpfull! But I will do what I feel is right either way.

June 16, 2006 - Msg 39488: Barnwannabe, you are more like Barney than anybody could have thought. YOU were the one that pitched a fit and said you were leaving when the "SPAMBOTS" posted those ads here on the porch. You were, in Opie's words, "a sight."

Now your saying about your e-mail that your cousin at the FBI "will be glad to come a lookin' for whoever gives it out." Ha ha...I am NOT going to give out anyones e-mail address...never have...never will...but if that FBI statement is a Barney-ish statement I don't know what is.

Maybe the boys at the lab can help your cousin and he can teach them the FBI hand shake. That'll make thinks great around here.

To All
As I've ALREADY said, I don't WANT to make the porch a password protected thing. I don't think it's very "Mayberry" to have to do that so I've never wanted to do it.

That said, we've had somebody here on the porch pretending to be one of our regulars. To me, that is WORSE than the "SPAMBOT" type postings. The reason being is that pretending to be one of the regular porch sitters is HURTFUL to the person that's being spoofed.

That is something we NEVER saw in Mayberry. Folks in Mayberry look out for one another. They care about one another. They are friends...family. If you care about people, you NEVER do things to hurt them. Folks would never pretend to be someone.

I'm not certain who is doing this pretending but THAT is what will cause me to make folks register if and when I do.

If registering will cause you to leave, then I'm afraid I'd have to say I'm sorry but I guess you'll need to go. How can you be friends with folks that hide behind a fake name and worry that somebody might figure out who they are?

I hate to disagree with Barnwannabe but there is STILL a Mayberry. We have a little corner of it right here on the internet. Fear may keep some from staying in our town but Mayberry is here none the less.

Even Mayberry had trouble. Andy took care of it.

In our little corner of Mayberry, I have to take care of it. I've been doing just that for just under 15 years here on the internet. Sure we have troubles but I've never seen the trouble makers win...just like Mayberry.

Well, that's my soapbox...I'm stepping off of it now.

Floyd & Romeena-I have to say I agree with both of you. I don't mean to be offensive here because I love this place but something seems a little different here on the porch lately. I can't quite put my finger on it but there seems to be an edge lately that wasn't there before.

Floyd-I said it before I'll say it again you can count me in I trust ya. I think Deputy Fife said it best, "now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their neighbor!"

You and the porchsters, in fact, help me remember that there is a lot of good in the world. I know sometimes you have to be careful, but on this issue, I'm with Floyd, Ro, and PH. It just irks me that interlopers can cause such a devisive rift among us. A strange breeze seems to be blowing across our porch. I just want things back to normal here.

June 16, 2006 - Msg 39495: Goodnight Deputy Warren. It's been a tough day, I know.

To Floyd Msg 39488, I wish you wouldn't beat around the bush. Just say what's on your mind.
;) just kidding. You made your feelings quite clear. And you brought up a great point. Even Mayberry wasn't all happiness and smiles all the time. They had to deal with differences of opinion, arguments and similar problems. Unfortunately we won't be able to solve this issue in 30 minutes like they did.

To auh2o Msg 39492, since you asked, what makes you think I know anything about computer and security issues?
Could it be my degree in Engineering?
Could it be my degree in Criminal Justice?
Could it be me being a few courses short of a degree in Information Systems and Computer Programming?
Gee, I don't know.
