May 12, 2006 - Msg 37874: A year or so ago, we had an invasion of wood rats - they came from my neighbor's rotting old wooden tool shed next door, which has since been torn down. However, during our "rat period" I used a humane live trap and caught six of the little rodents. Each time, I put the trap in the trunk of my car on some newspapers, drove about a mile and a half from home, into a wooded area and released them. A cat caught another one (right before my very eyes, it was awful) and I think some little screech owls who were living around here may have caught some as well. However, the raccoon is much too big for my trap, so if he won't listen to reason, I guess I'll just have to yell and wave my arms a lot and see if that'll discourage him from coming in my yard. I'm not about to do him any harm, regardless. Maybe I can put another layer of flagstone under the limestone slab that forms the bridge, raising it high enough above the water that he can't reach the fish. I think that's where he's catching them from. Of course, there's always the chance that it's the hawk that hangs around here sometimes, too - it might not be the raccoon at all. Sooner or later, I'll catch the perpetrator. --Romeena

Romeena, 6 to 8 weeks? But I have choir tryouts next week. And John Masters sent all the way to New York City for this arrangement. What will I do? You desribed it perfect though. A dry raspy cough that gets set off with anything. A laugh, any exertion at all, even tried singing with the radio a little yesterday and that got me going. I can deal with it in the winter, but this time of year is just plain wrong. Anyway, enough bellyaching from me about that.

Homemaker, I was reading in the archives you were asking about radiant heat. I have both installed and repaired some of those. Maybe I can help. What are you looking for?

Poor Horatio, being only half a boy, do you only eat half as much? If so, I want to eat out with you so I can have the other half. Wasting food is a sin after all. That's one sin I don't commit.:)

Mavis, I was reading your post about your clients. It's a shame you have to deal with folks like that. But they are everywhere. I guess it's one of the downsides of being in business. Reminds me of some of James Harriets story's about getting called to attend to a sick animal in the middle of the night and saving it from death, only to have the farmer get mad at him for "being overly savage with pen" when writing the bill.

May 12, 2006 - Msg 37878: ASA, I don't know anything about the grapefruit extract but my advice is Muccinex (you can get it over the counter at any grocery store or WalMart) and plenty of water. The combination will loosen up the congestion and help you get rid of this stuff, preventing infection. One warning about grapefruit (and I am assuming this includes grapefruit extract...maybe Lucy will know), it can interfere with certain medications you might be taking.

This is the big weekend to meet with the Gaither crowd, specifically the Isaacs. Been lookin forward to that for a while. I have a brand new demo that I'm going to be handing out...I'm certainly not in a position today to go into full time ministry...but in a few years, I'd love to. Right now...just looking to get some feedback and start building/re-buildng some contacts in the industry. Ya'll pray that I first and formost just look to be where God wants me to be...it'll all be good after that. :-)

May 13, 2006 - Msg 37932: Hey, Mavis, you know what's scary? Every single thing on that list, I can remember my mother saying to me, and I promise you, I said it all to my kids! Lawsy, how they ever grew up to be reasonably sane and functional adults, I'll never know. To this day, they tease me about yelling "Don't bleed on the carpet!" at them as they came in the house bleeding from some injury or other. I wouldn't even let them come in, but sent them outside to wash the blood off with the garden hose! I'd probably be arrested for child abuse today. My husband and I had a rule of thumb - "if they can walk and cry, they're okay." Made sense to us then, and pretty much still does. If they were walking, they probably didn't have any major broken bones, and if they were crying, they were breathing. Anything else is probably minor, usually fixable in our own bathroom, forget running to the ER for every little thing. I'm kidding, but I'm serious too. We raised four strong, self-reliant, non-whiny adults, who are able to laugh at the small stuff, and bear up under the big stuff. I'm proud of them. Thanks, Mom and Dad, for the example of toughness tempered with love and common sense you set for me.

Ro, I hear ya about the accidents etc. If we were playing cowboys and indians for example, and we skinned a knee etc, my dad would say "Wyatt Earp wouldnt cry over this" etc., not out of meanness, but just putting the whole thing in perspective of the play. Only time i recall a trip to emergency, and that was in our own car, was when me and a street light pole met head on! I was running after a fly ball at a park and beaned one of those old green cast iron poles! had a bomp on my head about egg size. I was crying bloody murder all the way to the hospital!
Ah...those childhood memories! ha
ASA- yes, you can get it at HiHealth or other such. It and garlic will boost the immunesystem!

Sometimes in the evening, when I sit out in the arbor and enjoy the breeze and the sound of the fountain, it's not hard at all to see and hear Him in the beauty that's all around.

I'm pooped! My landscaper friend sent his two helpers here today, and we worked all day in the yard. We weeded, pruned, dug, planted, raked, blew, swept, sheared and sweated. Those guys are workers, and they did a good job. The yard looks lovely and now after a cool shower, I'm going to take a humongous glass of tea out there and sit in the shade and enjoy it all.

homemaker, I can't answer your question about a teaching job around Corsicana. All I can tell you is that I know there is some pretty country around there, and it's in easy driving distance from Dallas, but far enough out to retain the country charm. Are you really and truly considering a move from your place? I thought you had tap roots put down where you are.

Well, I've cooled down enough that I think I can safely get in the shower, and I imagine the Plum would appreciate it if I would. Actually, I'd appreciate it myself. Phew!

May 13, 2006 - Msg 37939: Ro - We visited this farm on our trip to Texas a couple of years ago and fell in love with the way things were done there - it was an inspiration to do a pole barn house similar to theirs. Only one thing keeps me here and that is my parents. I do not want them to miss time with their grandkids, otherwise, I'd move to Texas in a heartbeat. Always wanted to live in Texas, since I was a young girl. It can still be a dream. . . .

My son sent me a letter from jail that I received today. It was the nicest letter I ever got from anyone. He talks about praying and reading the bible a lot. I know there are many stories about jail-house conversions, so please keep him in your prayers that this conversion "sticks"! The last line in his letter says, "Thanks for my faith." It does a mom's heart good to read that.

May 14, 2006 - Msg 37947: Good morning, all! Happy Mother's Day! I'll be making a little visit to the cemetery to put some flowers on my mom's grave, and will be calling my dear mom-in-law later on. She was the step-mom to my husband, but you'd have never known it.

Poor Horatio, you're right, it is very hot and humid here in the summer, but I've been in Michigan in August, and it's not exactly cool there, either. The humidity far exceeds ours, and that old saying is very true - it's not the heat, it's the humidity. While our heat can be brutal, it's made up for by our lovely early spring, and fall that sometimes extends almost to Christmas. We have only a couple of months of cold weather, then have flowers blooming when everyone is still locked under a sheet of ice. I think it all balances out. I suppose it's a good thing, that we all don't like or enjoy the same thing. If everyone wanted to live in Texas, it would be so crowded that I'd probably move out!

Well, I'm off to preachin'. Wish I had a white rose blooming right now, I'd wear it in honor of my mom. Does anyone else remember that custom? A white rose if your mom was deceased, a red one if she was living. I always wore my red rose so proudly when I was a kid, and felt sorry for my parents and others who had to wear white ones. Once I saw another child wearing a white one, and it nearly broke my heart.

May 14, 2006 - Msg 37948: Oh and Homemaker, about hte radiant heat you were asking about. There are several different types on the market. The most common one today is where tubing is run in loops under a floor and then hot water from a boiler is pumped thru the tubing. The heat is then released up thru the floor into the room. They are costly to install, but fairly economical to operate and produces a very comfortable living space. There are also some company's that produce sheetrock with electric heat cables inbedded in the sheetrock. These panels are for ceiling installation only though. And being electric they are very costly to run. The only place I have seen that used is in areas where gas or propane are not available. There is another type used in industrial applications that has a tube with a gas burner in it and a vacuum pump on the other end. The tube heats and radiates that heat to objects below it. The pump sucks out the by products (carbon monoxide) to the outside. The whole idea of radiant heat as I understand it is to heat objects, not air space. But the objects will then heat the area arond it, if that makes any sense. I'm not really sure if any of them are cheaper to run than conventinal heat systems, but are a lot more comfortable and balanced in their applications. As far as I know any cooling system would have to be run as a seperate system. But even if you went with a totally radient heat system, you are still going to need some type of air handling system for your house. Most building codes require a system capable of introducing a certain percentage of fresh air per hour into a building. (I hope that makes sense). So a refrigeration system could easily be built into a air handling system that will need to be installed anyway. Am I getting thru to you lady? LOL Probably way more than you wanted to know, and I'm sure I left you with more questions than answers.

Me, I'm waiting for mine to call, he will, but it's too early for him, he tells me he sleeps late, in honor of all the hard work I do as a mother, LOL smart aleck huh? I'm heading out the the cemetery later on, to give my wonderful mother & grandmother some flowers, then back here to get some things done for our dog show next weekend. Will check back in later. For all of you that still have yer Mama's Hug them a little tighter today & thank the Good Lord you still have them there to hug!

The only one who lives fairly nearby is sick - he and his wife both have terrible colds, as do both of their kids, so I'm glad they stayed at home and kept their germs confined.

homemaker, if you want to know how radiant heat works, just go up into your attic. You'll get a perfect object lesson! (teehee) Speaking of which, a group of us at lunch today were discussing rising a/c bills, and various forms of attic insulation. Mine was top of the line 34 years ago, when this house was built, but is woefully inadequate now, compared to today's standards. So, I gotta do something. Options are having more insulation blown in - probably cheapest at under $1000. Then there is a new system that blows foam onto the attic ceiling (the bottom of the roof), which is effective but costs more. Another choice is foam sheets stapled in place between the rafters on the underside of the roof. The last two are probably the most effective, but are more costly. Guess I'll get some estimates.

Well, I feel a nap coming on. I hope everyone had a lovely day. Mavis, I'll be making that run out to the cemetery today sometime, too. It's hard. I can't believe my mom has been gone seven years. Seems like I should still be able to call her on the phone, or run by and get her and go shopping. What a sweet, dear soul she was. I can hardly wait to see her again!

May 14, 2006 - Msg 37956: Happy Mother's Day! And thank you to those wonderful Papa's who wished us one too. I have been really puny now for nearly a week. Hubby has me on a homeopathic antibiotic, nasal spray, and cough expectorant. That stuff cured me last time in 3 days, but so far it hasn't this time. Bryson made me a wonderful card and his class made us Mom's a book with their drawings. Its sweet. Hubby cleaned the house spick and span and is paying for me to get a spa pedicure. I think I'm going to lie down a bit while hubby has Bry at The Man's Place (Home Depot).

I wish I wasn't so swamped with stuff to do all the time. kygirl, prayers for you and your daughter. My daughter has suffered from mean kids her whole life--hers is more just being ignored and not included in anything rather than actual bullying. She's painfully shy. But it all hurts. She is, however a wonderful, beautiful daughter and I thank God for her every day. She and I are very close. Lovely poems, Tom. Asa, I'm so sorry to hear you're ailin' and that Vicks isn't helping. That's serious. Buckeye, did you put in an order for this weather? PLEASE! Take it back! What an ugly weekend. My daughter was in the state track meet yesterday (Their relay team got 16 out of 42--not bad.) and we nearly froze to death. Romeena, sorry to hear about the fish problems. We've been through that--mainly with our cats. We had a black moor once that the cats pulled both his bugs eyes off and he lived for quite some time before he finally disappeared. Funny thing, sometime during the year after his death, we had a multicolored fantail baby with bug eyes show up in there. I'm glad his legacy lives on. Blackie (original name) was a nice fish. Maybe you need to get after that raccoon with a pointy stick.

May 14, 2006 - Msg 37967: Wow, Charlotte, you say it was cats getting your fish? Out of an outdoor pond? I did sorta wonder about cats, but didn't give it much serious thought. I rarely see a cat around here, most of my neighbors keep theirs indoors, but once in a while one passes through. I can't see one being industrious enough to actually fish from my little bridge, though. A coon, yes. A cat is usually too lazy. The pond is 2 1/2 feet deep at one end and 15" deep at the other, and the sides are straight, no slopes. The fish usually hang out under the bridge at night, so I suppose if a critter was waiting on the bridge and a fish drifted to the surface - zap! Hmmm. I may have to think about elevating that bridge a bit.

Goober, I'm sure you and Mrs. Goober had a really great evening, and you'll enjoy that guitar for a long time to come. What an honor!

However, I suspect the problem goes a lot deeper than just stopping folks at the border. Part of it can be explained with "supply and demand". Those folks cross the river because they know they can get work here. It may be work no one else wants, but it's more than they have at home. I submit that if we took every able-bodied person on the welfare rolls and put them to work, there would be no jobs for the illegals to fill. It would really be pretty simple. You want your welfare check? You show up at a pickup point every day, and the landscapers, construction bosses, whoever, go there to pick up day labor. They don't pay the worker, though, they pay welfare instead, to help make up for what is paid out in welfare checks. Jobs are filled, work is done, welfare fund is reimbursed, lazy do-nothing louts are off the street and too tired to get into mischief, and illegals stay home because there's no work here. Seems pretty easy to me. I have no quarrel with welfare paid to the old, infirm and disabled, but there are multiplied thousands on the rolls who are more able to work than I am. I know, they show up at my hospital every day to add one more mouth to the rolls. They can run around, do drugs, and have babies, but they can't work. Go figure. OK, that's my reaction? Who wants to be next?

May 15, 2006 - Msg 37980: BUCKEYE: While I think that something sure needs to be done, I believe that the move to add National Guard troops to the border is more political than helpful. Let's face it, there is already a healthy "military" presence on the border, from personnel to military aircraft. The National Guard and the Reserves are already pretty put-upon by the war in Iraq. Remember, the National Guard is mainly made up of individuals who did their hitch in the military and basically agreed to be on "stand by" for emergencies. I'm sure few of them dreamed of being called up for extended periods. A lot of these people also are older have families and jobs. Between Iraq, Afghanistan, Louisianna, and now this, I wouldn't be at all suprised if military folks who are being discharged will start to shun the Guard and Reserves.

ROMEENA is right. Illegal immigration is like the drug trade in at least one repsect: you can't control the supply outside your borders, and we're too soft to really do anything about the demand. In the "war on drugs," we villify other countries that export drugs to our country. But the real problem is that people in this country crave the drugs (the U.S. has about 7% of the world's population and consumes about70% of the world's illegal drugs!). Those south of our border want a better life--and who can blame them--and they know that even a bad life here often is better than a good one where they are. For all the hand-wringing here in the U.S., companies large and small, big corporations and mom and pop operations, hire illegals to cut costs. So there is a demand. What do I think would happen if tomorrow businesses had to hire citizens instead of illegals? I think their costs would go up, so would their prices, and we consumers would complain and moan all the way to the Wal-Mart. Most of us have our principles, we just don't want them to cost us anything--especially money.

A. I have no problem with the use of the military to secure our borders. In fact the idea of doing such a thing is clearly called for in our constitution.
2. There are tens if not hundreds of thousands of Americans who need to be weaned off of the national nipple. Put them to work doing all these jobs that are out there. No more hand outs. Pretty darn simple if you take out all the stinking politics. And think of the money that would free up to give real help to those who really need it.
C. Go after employers who are knowingly hiring illeagels. This would require a business/goverment partnership, but it could be done.

I have no problem with folks wanting to come to this great nation and live the American dream. I am a first generation American myself. My parents came here from England. And they had to go thru much to finally get there citizenship. I remember how proud they where when that day came. But we have rules and laws for a reason. If the laws need to be updated, then lets go through the process to do that. But the idea that we will just not obey the law because it's silly or inconvienient is flat out wrong.

OK, HEAVY topic: MEXICO has a very high southern fence! Yes, it is true. But we can't.. says Vicente Fox. Something is not kosher. This troop thing could very well be election year stuff, but Arizona systems are maxed out and something has to be done. 20 hour waits in Ermergeny rooms, etc. So many on street corners that big messes are left daily, and extra clean up has to be done all at Taxpayer expense.
WHY dont they march thru MEXICO city instead of Phoenix demanding everything? Their corrupt government needs a complete fix, not our immigration policy!
Ask me again and I'll tell ya how I REALLY feel! ha I love everyone, and I know that we need to all be civil and work this thing out, but it can be VERY frustrating! OK, back to our regularly scheduled front porch! ha Kablooy goes the box!

I work with Peruvians, El Salvadorians & more in DC, they come over here on "work release cards" for 6 months, then go back home, you wouldn't believe how many of them just don't go home, they stay here & continue to work, most folks that hire them have no idea, they were supposed to be back in thier own country, so they go on paying them, tax free, BTW, & they just keep working & having babies, which ARE American citizens since they are born on this soil, nevermind that the parents are not citizens. The whole situation makes my blood boil! I heard an illegal on tv here the other day, admitted they were illegal, telling all about how 2 families of 4 lived in one house in Mexico, they didn't have work, or food, & they decided to come here. The reporter said how horrible that must be, & I just wanted to slap that smile off her face, I mean really, all she has to do is get in her car, drive an hour from here & see the same if not worse in the Appalachian Mountains, folks born right here! Please, don't get me started on that..... Where's that dynamite goat to blow up this soapbox??
