May 02, 2006 - Msg 37503: It's another sunny, schoolday afternoon and Richie Cunningham has spent the past several hours throwing down "pop" at the town's teenage watering hole, "Al's". Finding a moment between Ralph Malph's bad jokes, Richie gets up to play some pinball. Unfortunately, he doesn't see the fake vomit Ralph left on the floor, slips, and crashes head first into the jukebox. Unconscious for several minutes, Richie is finally revived with a snap of the Fonz' fingers.
"Hey, Richie? You alright?" asks a concerned Potsy.

"Yeah, I think so." Richie lays there confused. Not only is he still dazed from the blow, but he also remembers...

Later that day the phone rings in the sheriff's office of a small town. A shaky deputy answers. "Hello? Just a minute. Andy! It's for you!"

Two weeks later, Milwaukee District Courtroom. Opening statements are about to begin in the custody battle over Richie Cunningham/Opie Taylor. Andy Griffith will argue that he is the biological father and that, along with Aunt Bea, would provide a better home for little Opie. He will also accuse the Cunninghams of kidnapping and brainwashing Opie. The Cunninghams will argue that they are in fact the rightful and better parents. They will claim that Richie's flashbacks are artificial memories implanted from watching too much TBS as a child. Unfortunately, neither side can produce any concrete evidence such as a birth certificate.

Due to flu season, the judge pool is extremely depleted. The only available judge with child custody experience is King Solomon, who will preside over today's proceedings. To whom will the ever wise Solomon award custody? Under obscure state laws, joint custody or splitting Ron Howard in two are not allowable options.


May 02, 2006 - Msg 37504: Sheriff Andy Taylor (Andy Griffith) and his young son Opie (Ron Howard) are in need of a new housekeeper. Andy's Aunt Bee (Frances Bavier) looks like the perfect candidate and moves in, but her presence causes friction with Opie.

The guitar player is played by James Best, who later played Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane on The Dukes of Hazzard.

Andy teaches Opie about how important it is to keep a promise, only to have that lesson conflict with his need to help Opie's friend who ran away from home.

This is the last episode where any references are made about Andy and Barney being cousins.

Andy is concerned that Opie has been less-than-generous when giving to charity.

Ellie Walker, a pretty young pharmacist, moves to Mayberry to help her uncle in the local drugstore. Her adherence to the rules creates turmoil with the town's resident hypochondriac.

This is the first appearance of Ellie Walker, played by Elinor Donahue who was fresh from her popular role as Betty on Father Knows Best

Well Sean finally fell asleep. I finally had to call his neurologist because of the severity of the jerking. It scared me this time. I had to get on the bed with him, wrap my legs around his and hold his arms. He was in terrible shape, poor kid. The doc told me to try giving him some Benadryl and Bruce and I tried breathing exercises until he was able to calm down. I have to tell you it was not pleasant. He is sleeping soundly now. If this keeps up I don't know what I'll do. The doctor told me that this episode was most likely caused from the trauma of Jingles dying. Thank you for your prayers, just wanted to let you know that he is better right now and now I am going to bed because I am emotionally exhausted.

MDC, I think I have that book you mentioned. I will look for it.

I think it's something like what they do for epileptic seizures. Scary, I know, but if it could help....

Lucy, I'd have bet there was some hormonal stuff going on. In that case, honey, there's nothing on this green earth you can do right now that will please that child. Just keep on loving her, being kind to her, and eventually, she'll come around.

Anybody know who posted all the bulletin-type things at the beginning of this board? Not that it's offensive - it's certainly not - but it's a bit outdated, sort of old news. Just wondering.

ROMEENA: My wife's in the same boat today (worked last night and back again tonight). Yeah, there's something wierd going on all right. I think the same thing happened the other day as well. Any idea's, FLOYD?

BOO: I'm glad Sean finally was able to calm down and get to sleep. You and your husband sound like wonderful parents. Your kids are obviously blessed.

DIXIE: You and your mom are in my prayers.

ASA: You are so right.

We got some good news this morning; my wife does not have gestational diabetes. It's fairly common in pregannat women and not cause for great alarm, but my wife, particulary, was really concerned about it. Praise the Lord. Hey, AFD: How are you doing?

We also got some not-so-hot news yesterday. The contractor who is supposed to be doing our kitchen now can't get to it until the end of June. Normally, this wouldn't be a big problem, but we were very hopeful that this could get done this month or while we are on vacation in early June since the baby is due in mid-July but could come early. Beside the general inconvenience of having your kitchen ripped apart for a few weeks with a new baby in the house, there are other considerations. Our house is about 120 years old, and the biggest job in the kitchen is that the ceiling must be ripped out. That means a lot of plaster dust, layers of lead paint, and possibly asbestos particles being spread around. The contractor is taking precautions but I still don't want the kids around that, much less a newborn. I guess we could wait, but until it gets done we won't have the washer and dryer hooked up so will have to lug laundry for five to my mom's (which we have been doing for awhile now and it isn't fun, let me tell you!). And, we don't want to be going through this when school starts in September. One blessing is that our contractor is the father of a good friend and a good Christian man. He's done work for us before and is very professional, trustworthy and reasonable; three qualities rarely found in a contractor at the same time around here. So, say a little prayer if y'all have time.

Well, back to the salt mines...

May 03, 2006 - Msg 37517: Thanks friends. It has been an emotionally exhausting week but I felt your prayers! God is faithful. Sean seemed better this morning and slept well through the night. He just seemed very tired (to be expected, I guess) and was still having some trouble with the tics. RO, there is a surgery called Deep Brain Stimulation where they actually put two holes in the skull and place 2 electrodes into the area of the brain responsible for causing the tics, they run the wires down the spine where they come out and are connected to a control that sends electrical impulses into the brain. At this point it has only been done to a handful of people with Tourette's worldwide (only those with very severe symptoms). They aren't doing the surgery on kids because alot of them stop having the symptoms after puberty. We just have to wait and see and over time it will be something that is done more routinely. If Sean needs it later we will certainly consider it. He watched a special on it with me and he is already asking for "holes in his head"! I try to understand what he must be enduring but he tells me I just don't know how bad it is. As horrible as it is I know we are doing all we can and its good to know that some day, if this persists, there is hope for him....AND we are learning that we can find good in even this when we look for it. It has made us all stronger. I can't even imagine going through this five years ago, I would have been a basket case!

Did laundry and CLEANED THE REFRIGERATOR!! Don't ya'll hate that job? I should be thankful I don't have to leave my perishables in a bag in the creek like our ancestors. My folk's refrigerator is a nice side by side that I know they paid big bucks for, not very old either..anyway, when I was putting one of the clean shelves back in it cracked in two! I was so mad. Something that costs so much should last longer. Remember when refrigerator shelves were like oven racks and impossible to break? Now they are plastic and glass. Stupid, I think. Last night I also broke the handle off the patio door. I just took ahold of it to open it and the handle broke off. Either I have super-human strength all of a sudden or they just don't make things sturdy enough. I haven't mentioned either to Dad yet....trying to avoid it. hehe

Spot, the house is going slowly. The land is clearing off nice and I have enough firewood cut for a lifetime. We need to meet again soon with the guy doing the plans. Bruce is reading several books about building so he won't make any mistakes and we are getting ready to set up "house-building central" in the family room. We are moving out a couch and putting a table and setting up 2 computers, fax and printers, etc. Bruce said we will need it all for when we start the building process. He has set a deadline of October 1 for starting the actual building. He says it will take him that long to get all the right ducks in a row. So we are looking at having it finished next spring or summer, probably....sounds like a LONG time! I never dreamed I would be spending 3 Christmases here.

Sad about Flora. At least we have the memories.

Better go get ready for bible study tonight. The kids are out playing in the water (its been 90 degrees here).

May 03, 2006 - Msg 37528: Thank you for remembering us. Boo what that means is that when they cut out part of her cheek yesterday what they cut was all cancer cells. In other words they didn't find an edge. It's is much bigger than they thought and they couldn't keep cutting b/c they don't know how big. Literally it couyld be in half of her face or spread to other organs. She goes to get a full body scan Friday to find out where it is exactly.

May 03, 2006 - Msg 37531: Evening porch people. Just saying good night. Things have been busy on my end of the porch, I haven't had much time to rock and rest this week.
Very Busy at work this week and somewhat stressful 3 days at that. I took off this morning to take my Mom to see her cardiologist for her yearly check up. She is 75 and had triple by pass 5 years ago so she has to be checked out 1 x year. All went well and we are greatful for that. My Dad died when I was 11 so at this point in time looking after her is mostly up to me. She lives alone and does well but I still needed to go with her. I have a younger brother but he is not real good about checking on her or asking if she needs anything so I do the best I can. Thanks for reminding me about the National Day of Prayer MDC. We talked about it in church Sunday, but with all that has gone on it had slipped my mind. Dixie, prayers will be with you and your Mom. SPOT, thanks for the great meal. Glad you are back to cooking. Sounds like there has been some great news to spread on the porch today. I have some too. I had my endoscopy done today and it went well (although I could do without the demoral hangover, couldn't otis handle this one?). The dr had to stretch out my esophagus and its really irritated from my reflux, but that's it. I can handle all of that.
Rev- Gas went down here from 2.95 last week to 2.83 (Spots may be less in Kennesaw). Go Braves!
MDC- Did you watch tonights Texas Ranch House? I'm taping the whole series. Its pretty good.
Spot- Our Girl, Paris was booted. She took it really well, dontcha think?
Boo- Bryson keeps asking me when our pools opening. I certainly won't tell him about Sean and Erin!

Spot, you asked me what I do in the outside world. Well, I'm currently what I like to call a domestic engineer. I have a bachelors degree in fashion marketing, but have yet to use it. This fall, now that I'm no longer homeschooling, I'll be looking for a job. The way I look at it Bryson's only little once. I won't even be 40 when he graduates from high school. Although I do need to work at least part time in order to have money for retirement since SS will be gone by the time I'm ready for it. Y'all have a great day tomorrow. I'm going to try to sleep even though it may be difficult since hubby's in Dallas.

I have something I am VERY thankful for today. This afternoon, the kids and two of the neighbor kids were playing outside when Sean came running in the house to tell me there was a snake outside. When I went out to investigate, the kids were standing around a rattle snake! It was a small one and was trying to climb up a tree. I got the kids out of the way and Dad and I killed it with a hoe. One of the neighbor kids actually stepped over it before he noticed it on the ground. I am so thankful none of the kids were hurt! This drought is causing critters to come out looking for water. I think I will make the kids play in the backyard where the dog stays because she is good at hunting snakes.

Well, think I will turn in. Have a peaceful night and thanks for your continued prayers for Sean.

LUCY: I watched some of "Texas Ranch House" last night, but the Mrs. was home and we were flipping back and forth between that and "Top Chef," which we've also gotten into. I steer clear of most reality shows, but this one is a straight competition and pretty interesting. I don't watch "American Idol," but I have caught it before and enjoyed it. On "Ranch House" I get real frustrated with Mr. Cooke. He just can't seem to make a logical decision and stick to it. I don't know how they went about choosing these people (I missed the first show), but he seems awfully indecisive and too easily pushed around to be the big cheese. And I think that Maura should have been spanked more when a kid.

May 04, 2006 - Msg 37551: About gas prices, I find it terrible in one way (the wallet) but in another I hope that it (finally) spurs our political and business leaders to get serious about alternative, renewable energy sources and vehicles that get better gas mileage. To put it in perspective, a gallon of gasoline costs about $3.00 here today; if you take a bottle of water from the 7-11 and figure it's price per gallon it would be about $8.00. A Starbuck's coffee would be about $23.00 a gallon! And most of us will gladly pay the price for our water and coffee.

Don't get me wrong, the price of gas has really put the pinch on my family. But it is a finite resource that sooner or later is going to run out. Yeah, it may be 100 years from now and not necessarily "our problem." But that's what they've been saying about Social Security for the last fifty years, and I know I wish that our parents and grandparents had demanded a little more accountability from their leaders on that score.

Well, gotta go to the dentist soon. We're taking our daughter--she loves going to the dentist and has been looking forward to it all week. Our dentist has bubble gum flavored stuff for cleaning teeth. That about explains it all.

I received an email from stonyfield.com (best yogurt on the market) and they have joined with renewus.org to promote saving the environment. There is a video that you can access on both websites. I encourage you to watch it. I'm not a hippie or anything, but I do think we should do all we can to help the Earth for our children and grandchildren. Anyhoo, thought I'd share.

Lucy I am majoring in Social Science Education (History teacher) I finished my BS in December and now working on my Masters. Hopefully I'll be done with it by this December! Then in a couple of years I want to look into a PhD b/c I want to teach in college some day. Aim high, do your best and God will take care of the rest is my motto. He'll put me right where he wants me :)

LUCY: I watched the end of "Texas Ranch House," but I won't give away the ending. I will say that it's not pretty!

TERRY: The porch is actually "self sweeping." It will sweep when it hits a certain capacity. I don't want to get too technical, but it involves big wires, Christmas lights and other electronal stuff. (Hey, you're not talking to a jerk, y'know!)

BIG MAUDE: Happy Birthday to you! I have a big birthday coming up this month (my birth certificate says it'll be my 40th, but I'm claiming 30.). Here's a trivial triviality for all you Porchsters; the first one who get's teh answer correct get's the first piece of my birthday cake:

Terry, this is Sean's mom. Thanks for the encouragement. I am so glad your neice is doing so well! You know I was thinking that the TAGS episdode about Horatio would be a great skit. You could do the courthouse scene with Andy and Opie when they are talking about charity and, "Half a boy". It is a hilarious scene...from the episode called, Opie's Charity.

Hope Bryson feels better real soon. I watched a little of Texas Ranch House last night and was kind of put out by the ranch hand's behavior. I didn't like the way they treated the Cooke girls at the party.

Dixie, I couldn't help but feel joy when I read your post. It is so neat to think about what an influence you can have in this world with God's help. There are so many young people lost and needing direction. May God continue to lead you into His purpose for your life, for His glory. God bless you for aiming high!

May 05, 2006 - Msg 37586: DIXIE: "Texas Ranch House" is a show on PBS that puts a family and a group of others on a ranch in Texas to see how they fare using late 19th century methods and tools. If you've ever seen "Frontier House" or "Victorian House," it's the same set-up. Unfortunately, as in those series, the people that volunteer to "experience" history end up cheating and/or carrying with them their 21st century mores. Still, it's a good program you would probably enjoy given your interest in history. The show just wrapped-up its limited run but PBS usually repeats programs like this quite heavily. You may want to check out your local public broadcasting website to see when it wil be playing again.

BIG MAUDE: You don't look a day over 30. Just remember I said that when my birthday rolls around on...HA!...Y'all thought I was gonna give it away, didn'tcha? For those that missed my trivia question, see #37575. My offer still stands.
