Been reading with interest all this talk on public schools because of the decisions we're going to have to make with Kai's education and life, and I'll be danged if I can't see everyone's side on this issue. Therein lies the dilemma that it looks like a lot of people are facing. Do we keep her in public school and hope for the best or take her out, thereby letting the dark powers that be continue to feed their ideas to generations of kids. I'm thinking about what happened here last year with the public school's planned "Diversity Day", which was supposed to have been in response to an incident between an American Indian and a white student, yet due to some opportunistic homosexual activists(from another city yet, mind you)it became a platform to press their agenda to the kids. They apparently got to the local paper as well, as the pre-event story was all about them, with pictures of two of the activist speakers even. There was one sentence at the end of the article announcing that there would also be some Indian speakers. One sentence.
I bring this up because over 70% of parents kept their kids out of school that day. I guess they figured their kids are indoctrinated enough just from the tv. The parent's withdrawal of their kids was met with two more angry and decidedly mocking articles, with one school offical frustrated at what she thought the kids need to be "exposed" to. That was her exact word - exposed. I think it is the parent's choice in what they think their kids should be "exposed" to. Not the schools.
The point is that all those parents took action when they saw a threat to their kids hearts and minds. And if everyone who can afford to, pulls their kids out of public schools, there will be no one(or less people anyway) to send a message to the school officials that we don't want our children indoctrinated into this kind of stuff. I hope the school saw the message. There was another diversity day this year, although I haven't heard anything about it, or whether they allowed the activists to take over this time.
In my own story, I went from grades 1 to 8 in a Catholic elementary school, and then the rest in public. And I did go through a rebellious period in high school where I drifted away from God. I think most everyone does go through some rebel period in their lives. I think the important thing was that I had that foundation of faith in my early years, and it was something that always made me question my actions. It forced me to, basically, take responsibility for the things I do. That's something that is lacking from alot of kids today, unfortunately. And it too, is taught to them, in the media and from activists like those I talked about.
Like in a sturdy house, a strong foundation is the key. The kind of foundation I'm referring to though is still a kind of rock, but it is a rock that can never be broken. It can be tempted, toyed with, mocked, spat on, kicked, and even moved short distances, but it is always there deep down and can never be totally destroyed.
Now that my lesson on geology is over;), I should tell you that our visit with the realtor went well yesterday. She said we don't really have to even do anything to improve the house because she thinks it is ready to go(Aside from the upstairs closet which I still have some work complete, but my brother came up yesterday as well to help do some of that).
She even said she already has someone who is looking for a house like this and she will be coming over later tonight to look at it. And we don't even have it posted on the market yet! I hope this is a sign of good things to come! It would be perfect because this person's lease is up in July and she was to buy a house now though. This would give us time to find a place to live where we are moving to and still be in time to get Kai ready for her new school next year, so I hope everything works out.

Well, I'd better go. Still have some spiffing up to do before the new owner of the house(just trying to keep good thoughts :)) comes tonight. Been working like a madman on this house the last couple days and it would be nice if it were all over.

April 27, 2006 - Msg 37320: Now, first off, let me state that I have nothing more or less against homosexuals than I do anybody else. We are all sinners, have fallen short, and so forth. But I don't condone the lifestyle. I "tolerate" it; I do not agree or accept it in any way. That explained, I'd like to point out a humerous point of irony. Yesterday was the "Day of Silence" event in high schools and colleges across the nation. It's purpose was supposed to be to draw attention to the "fact" that homosexuals must be silent about their lifestyle, or are silenced by the majority. (Now, based on what we are bombarded with every day I find it hard to swallow that homosexuals feel silenced--I know I hear about it all the time-- but, be that as it may.) Anyway, I found it ironic that yesterday, the "Day of Silence," was the one day we could send our kids to school and be sure they would NOT be indoctrinated by this form of PC propaganda! Kinda funny, huh?

April 27, 2006 - Msg 37321: BOO: I don't want to beat a dead horse, but, well, I definitely had my sensibilities pressed to the limit this afternoon. I was listening to NPR and heard that some parents in Massachusetts are suing their local public elementary school. Why? Because a teacher read her second grade students a story. What was the story about? It has the requisite prince and princess, but in this version the prince decides not to marry the princess but instead another prince. The school district officials are standing behind the teacher. They reason that since Massachusetts has legalized same-s*x marriage, they feel compelled to represent such relationships in class as normal. They say it's not a civil rights issue but a human rights issue. Also, although the school is required to notify parents when issues of s*xuality are to be discussed so the parents can opt their kids out, the school officials are saying in cases like this they are not required. So, it seems, some of us have it harder than others when it comes to reasoning where to send our kids to school. Things were simpler in Mayberry.

This is my very last comment on the subject, promise!

April 27, 2006 - Msg 37323: Me-They, I couldn't agree more. How on earth can gays dare to say they feel "silenced", when there are parades, marches, explicit TV shows and movies, "Gay Day" at Disneyland and the like. I think they need to quit beating that broken drum.
On the other hand, lest anyone think I'm a homophobe or a gay-basher, let me say that I have many gay friends, and respect them and their right to their lifestyle. I don't understand it, nor do I condone it, but as long as they live their life and let me live mine, we have no problem. I have a good friend at work, who has been in a committed lesbian relationship for years. I know this, because my father sold a house to her and her partner. That's the only way I knew it. She doesn't go around promoting or pushing her lifestyle, just as I didn't find it necessary to share the intimate details of my life when my husband was alive. She is one of the kindest, most capable and compassionate people I know, and I wouldn't dream of censuring her because of her lifestyle, just as she wouldn't dream of pushing it on me.
Several years ago, I was the nurse for a young man who was dying of AIDS. His partner spent weeks sleeping on a cot on the hospital room. He did everything for the patient - fed him, bathed him and attended to all his needs. We nurses took him his meds, and that was about all. Such dedication and devotion would be rare in a lot of marriages, yet this young man was faithful. One can't help but respect that.
It comes down to live and let live, I guess. We may hate the sin, but love the sinner. I'm glad I'm not judged by my peers for everything I've ever done, because in God's eyes, sin is sin, period. There are no degrees, it's just sin.
So, if gays want to follow their lifestyle, I don't object, so long as there is no move to push it on me, or try to get me to agree that it's "normal". Therein lies the problem. Too many are not content to leave it at that, and that's when my objections surface. I think I'm not alone.

You are so right - there are areas and situations where it's a lot tougher to raise kids than in mainstream America. What scares me is the possibility of such things becoming mainstream. I have to admit, I'm not too surprised at it happening in Massachusetts. When the people of a state continue to re-elect the likes of Toad Kennedy, then anything can happen. If we have any porchsters who live in Massachusetts, please know I mean no offense, and wish God's blessings on you. You'll need them. So the prince went off to marry another prince, did he? Sterling, thanks for sharing your thoughts. I found them very interesting. I believe as parents the best thing we can do besides pray is to educate ourselves about what is going in in government schools around the country and then make our decision because from what I have read, even if the public school in your area seems ok now, there may be big changes ahead that you would not be at all happy with. With the opinion you expressed I would urge you to do some reading. I have a book I think you could benefit from and would be happy to send you a copy if you like. If you are interested, you can leave your email address and I will email you and get your mailing address. No pressure, its completely up to you.

I will leave you with this quote by a man named John Dunphy, who is a much-quoted figure from the humanist movement:
"The battle for humankind's future must be waged and won by teachers who correctly perceive their roles as proselytizers of a new faith: a religion of humanity...These teachers must embody the same selfless dedication as the most rabid fundamentalist preachers. The classroom must and WILL become an arena of conflict between the old and new-the rotting corpse of Christianity,...and the new faith."

A world view is being taught in government schools and its not a Christian one. The average child spends 40 hours per week in the government school system and in most families very little quality time with parents. They have homework after school, school sponsored activities, TV, video games and spend lots of time on the computer. It's kind of scary to think of it. Most kids just aren't learning what they need to learn from parents who are over-worked and in debt. I wish that at least parents of kids in public school would spend more quality time teaching their children a Christian world view and making sure receive biblical instruction in the home and in church.

Wow, very excellent discussion and I think it 's great that all can BE discussed without being offensive. I think Jesus summed it up pretty good with the fact that we are to be IN the world but not OF the world. If He is our "prize" and if he is our focal point, then we WILL make a difference for him anywhere in the world. Andy G even had the piture of the people praying out in the field put over the fireplace on the set. It was his way of doing that back then, and we can do it too.

I was flipping through the TV channels the other day and saw something unusual. It was an old episode of Hawaii 5-0. There was a commotion on the streets of Honolulu when a uniformed Honolulu police officer came over to investigate. I could not believe my eyes when I realized that the officer was none other than Andy Griffith! However, after watching it for a few minutes, I was saddened to learn that Andy was part of a swindle team who was robbing a man on the street. So out of character for Andy.

Just got home from my neighbor's house - she called in a panic, worried about her dog. She has a sweet little spaniel, who suddenly yelped and howled like she was hurt but no one was near her. Then she dropped down on the kitchen floor and proceeded to poop and piddle while lying on the floor! My neighbor called me, and I went over. The dog who would normally be jumping on me and demanding attention just lay on the floor, breathing hard. My advice, of course - get her to the emergency animal clinic NOW. Before they could gather her up to leave, she threw up. A lot. I helped them bag that up to take with them. I can't help but wonder if some horrible person has thrown something over their fence, and Annabelle got into it when they let her out to potty. At least the vet should be able to test the material to see if that's the case. One more reason why I don't allow the Plum outdoors.

I've got a little wounded dove in the back yard right now. She crashed into my window a few days ago, and hasn't left the ground since. She walks around all over the yard, and I've put a pan of water on the ground for her. She eats the seed and corn that's always out there, but she just can't fly. She hides in the bushes at night, and just wanders around the yard during the day. Today she did flutter her wings and try to fly, but couldn't get airborne. She hadn't even done that before, so maybe she's getting better. I just hope a cat doesn't find her before she's able to fly again. I don't see many cats around here, though, so maybe she'll make it.

Shoney's sounds great for breakfast. They closed our Shoney's several years ago, and opened another IHOP. Drat! I love Shoney's!

Me-They and Sterling, what sweet words. I am humbled by them. I pray I will always have a Christian attitude when I'm here on the porch because you folks really deserve that respect.

Did any of you happen to watch Oprah today? It was about teachers who have s#xual relationships with their young students (some as young as 11). What really caught my attention was that 2 of these women were teachers in private Christian schools! There is just no way to protect our kids from everything. Pedophiles can be anywhere. I used the opportunity to have a talk with my son about those who victimize children and some of the tricks they use. Its sad thay we have to talk about things like that with our kids but we have to arm them with information to help keep them safe from predators.

Well, I think I will turn in. I have a dr's appointment in the morning after I drop Sean off at school. It's just a follow-up after lab work. Peaceful sleep to everyone,

April 28, 2006 - Msg 37346: thanks for the cake and stuff last night , that sure filled that hollow pit of mine. shoneys sounds great on my way, reminds me of the time in huntsville alabama shoneys and an elderly couple was talking at the table by us. they were from florida and i heard the gentleman say he thought he'd try some grits that he'd heard so much about, his wife said go ahead honey. he got a big bpwl of it , sat down asked his wife what she thought should be put on them. she said i quess anything you want. now they had my attention; i watched as he put salt, butter, pepper, sugar, cream, and topped it with syrup and stirred it up. he slowly took a few bites and said i don't know what all the fuss over grits are. i didn't have the heart to tell him it's either salt n pepper or sweet not both. i excused myself and went to the bath room and laughed. buckeye

We used to have a Shoney's here,but they were lousey. Real bad food. Didn't stay open long. Then it became a Village Inn. Then we had a Denney's here that's been here for over 30 years. I drove by the other day and saw they had closed down. Not a big Denney's fan but it was sad just the same. Geepers, I hope Morreli's isn't next.

April 28, 2006 - Msg 37349: Good Friday morning to you all, Glad you are enjoying the meals. Hopefully, SPOT will be back soon and can resume his duties as Chief Porch Cook. Hope all is well. I have a busy week end, or so I have been told. My son has a outing with his sunday school class tonight, he has to be at the high school at 9 in the morning for some sort of football thing and of course there is always the shopping and cleaning that comes with Saturday. Sundays are pretty involved with church activities. My husband has to work every other weekend 9a-9p on Friday and Saturday and
12p-7p on Sunday so I am the cheif cook and driver on those days. Todays Lunch will be:
Tuna samwhiches with little sweet gerkins, chips and brownies with sweet tea or coffee. Dinner will be Pulled Pork BBQ or beef BBQ samwiches, cole slaw, baked beans, potato salad and sweet tea. Sorry - won't be able to make it for supper - the kids have a carnival at school (you know sucker pulls, throw the toilet paper through the toilet seat, cake walk) and we plan on eating there. You all are welcome to come - a fun time in the country should be had by all. About 400 kids make up the school - k thorugh 6. My son is in 3rd grade and only 20 students per class at the max! I am so glad that I don't have to worry about diversity day and the only moment of silence my children have is the one before the Pledge they say on a daily basis. I am so glad that I almost live in Mayberry!

I just spoke with my neighbor, seems Annabells is doing better. The vet thinks it's something she ate, but not poison. I'm glad, that had me scared. We had a poisoner in the neighborhood years ago, killed several cats and who knows how many squirrels and other little wild things. Vicious, evil person, in my opinion. A good argument for public whippings. If they'll poison a helpless little animal, what might they do to a child?

Mmmmmm! Grits!! I love 'em. With salt and pepper, and lots of butter - a perfect side to bacon or ham and eggs. Good with a little grated cheese stirred in, too. Real Southern Comfort food!

THAT has never happened before. My blood sugar was even lower. Has somebody around her been praying for me, perhaps??.......Thanks!

Well, I wanted to talk to each of you, hope I didn't miss anyone. I have to get ready to go pick up Sean and head out of town for the weekend. I'll eat mayo if it's served, but given a choice, it's MW every time! Mayo is just mostly slick and tasteless, in my humble opinion.

Rev and Big Maude, your pictures are in the album, and the prints will be mailed back to you tomorrow. Rev, your daughter is a model, right? If not, she should be. Beautiful young woman! Big Maude, your kids are great-looking, all-American kids. You must be so proud. Thanks for sharing, both of you.

Well, guess I'll go stir up some leftovers. Got half of a grilled steak, I'll slice it bite-size, and heat up a bag of Uncle Ben's Ready Rice and mix the two. The rice will warm the meat without cooking it (I like rare beef) and with a fresh spinach salad, I'll be all set. Not too shabby.

And yes, she did a little modeling a few years ago for a clothing company but it's not something that she does all the time. And she really didn't care for it. School and cheerleading pretty much takes up her time. I'm proud of both my "girls" (wife & daughter).

RO- that was a neat use for the wooden measuring "tape" that you mentioned. Hope you wipe the water off each time! Does it have any old advertising on it? Kinda neat to see those.
So much of what used to be made of wood and metal is now oil based plastic. For example, could you imagine Sgt Carter putting a plastic bucket on Gomer's head! ha But really, a lot of oil goes for all our plastics, and it is a LOT!

April 29, 2006 - Msg 37382: 'Mornin', everyone! Beautiful day here today, after rain and thunderstorms yesterday. Everything is washed clean, just looks so pretty. Big ol' fat robin wearing himself out in the yard, guess he's after the worms that come to the surface after a big rain. I haven't seen my little grounded dove this morning, but one like her just flew in and back out. Can't help but wonder if maybe it's my Dovie, able to fly again. She had been making some little fluttery attempts.

There's a silly little squirrel swinging on the bungee/corn device. He's just hilarious, gets a hold on the corn and swings around, hind legs sprawled out and toes fanned out, trying to stabilize himself. He falls off now and then, which really irritates him. Too funny!

Well, gotta go feed the Plum. We stayed up late last night, slept late this morning, and I need to get moving. I'll see you all later.

April 30, 2006 - Msg 37399: Evenin' Y'all!!
I have missed my daily chats with my Porch friends. We had such a good time with hubby's parents, aunt, and uncle. They stayed for 5 days. We went to the Botanical Gardens, Coca-Cola museum, Nature Center, Bass Pro Shop, Stone Mountain, antiquing, and of course Chick-fil-A (they've never had it). It was tight quarters with 7 people in a 2 bedroom apt (Bigger than Mrs. Mendelbrights), but we made do. They all said they've never had such a good, relaxing time in their borne days. That's nice to hear.
Rev- Do you know if raw milk is legal in SC?
Romeena- I completely agree with you on your homos#xual views. I have a step-uncle who would give absolutely anything to you if you needed it. When I was pregnant with no money and my parents cut me off he purchased my swing, pack-n-play, and stroller. He's a chef for a very well-to-do horse family in Ky, so he's well off, but you'd never know it being with him. He has never asked for anything in return is accepting him for him. He knows that the family is against his choices, but we all still love him as a person. Isn't that the way a Christian should be?
Sterling- My son is in public school and most of the porch knows he was once called "g#y", but that hasn't happened again to my knowledge. The only thing you can do is make sure you teach Kai is to rely on faith. Bryson does a Godtime card just about every night for church and I read bible stories before bed. We try to influence him more than the school.
Boo- that's great about your blood work. How's your weight loss coming along? I want to lose another 10 lbs by May 29th. I've lost 24 or so since February, but again I don't eat for my reflux.
Mavis- Did you get any bonsai at Home depot?
MDC- Joy, hmm, I like that.
Spot- Glad that you're back. I'll try to see the picture.
Big Maude- I didn't get to eat any of your meals, but they all sounded really good.
Well, I need to make dinner here. Bryson's at the neighbors, but I need to call him home. Hubby's at a natural health expo downtown, so there's no telling when he'll get home. I went earlier and it was really interesting. Y'all have a great evening! I'll check in again tomorrow!

To answer your question, Lucy, I ate too much this weekend, but will be making a nice healthy menu for this week. You know how it is when you are out of town and eating out and when you are in a small town in Texas, the menu doesn't vary much. We did find a nice Chinese place one night and ate until it layed on our chests all night! No reflux here, Lucy, we filled up all weekend.

I need to go spend some time with Erin. Thanks for the prayers on her behalf, she did well at Grandma's. She only cried a little at bedtime the first night.
