Hey, good to hear from some of you we haven't seen in awhile!
Possum, as far as the C-section causing your daughter's problems, I have not worked for several years and I just plain don't remember alot of things but Ro probably knows. As far as the ears go, taking an antibiotic when its not needed can do more harm than good so I think I would try the decongestant first and if that doesn'st help, see the dr to find out if an antibiotic is needed. That's my advice, anyway.
About the gas prices, I got an email today saying everyone should stop buying gas from Exxon and Mobile and it would force the gas prices down. I don't know if its true.
Gotta git the sack. Busy day tomorrow,
Boo

Hi all! Just thought I would pop in and say hi.
Marty, yeah I think I saw your post about your remodeling, and you are right, that's what I am off doing. It is slow going, especially when you don't know what you are doing. But at least I was wrong about when the realtor is coming over - I thought it was Tuesday but I just found out it is Wednesday, so I have a little more time. I still don't think the closet in the upstairs master bedroom will be completed, so we will just have to work the pictures around that somehow.
Talked to the neighbor, who has lived here for a long time, and he says he doesn't think we should have a problem selling the house. I hope he is right.
Hey Charlotte, and everyone. Boy, I am tired. Talk to you all later!

Hello all you front porchsters... Daphne here. Need to dust off my swing and have a seat! Life is soooo busy, and finding time to relax on the porch is limited... but a couple of things: from reading back a while ago, Romeena, YES i would love to see the website that has pics of the front porch folks--what fun! i'll post too. Secondly, i was listening to KAAM radio yesterday, and they played Rafe's song "Endearing Young Charms" again, then right afterwards i heard TAGS whistling (you know, the start up song for the show) which perked up my ears... then a voice came on that said "THIS IS ANDY GRIFFITH AND YOU'RE LISTENING TO K-DOUBLE-A-M!" How cool! i thought of you guys and was pleasantly surprised to hear that!
Okay, so i am running away to NC after all!!! Well not permanantly, but we are heading to MERLE FEST this weekend in Wilkesboro. I get to see The Dilliards! Anyone in here ever hear or meet them? i am soooooo hyped!
Inywho, i gotta get to work, but i'll pop in from time to time to get my front porch fix from all you fine mayberians...
You all take care!!! :-D
May God richly bless you all today.
April 25, 2006 - Msg 37240:
Good morning everyone! And a fine morning it is, too! Hey to those on the porch.
BOO: About that Exxon thing, I listened to a discussion about it this morning. The bottom line is, it won't work. Without detailing the whole thing, it won't work (1) because consumers can't pull it off (because enough people wouldn't join in and of those who do many would go right back as soon as they lowered their price even a little bit), and (2) even if we could pull it off, the fuel market doesn't really work that way (a long, long explanation). The bottom line is if we want lower gas prices, we have to drive less then prices will come down.
About my in-laws, yeah, their heart is in the right place and probably nothing terrible will happen health-wise. What worries my wife is that she has had progressive back problems which don't seem to go away, is getting worse and worse gestational diabetes, and the complications have increased with the last several kids. Also, this is the fastest she has ever gotten pregnant after a child, so her body hasn't had as much time as usual to bounce back. Plus, she and her husband aren't the most organized people and you can really tell that things have changed in teh last couple of years. It is very noticable when comparing the older and younger kids. The sensibilities, manners, behavior and such isn't the same. It seems (to us, anyway) that they just can't handle parenting that many kids as well as they did a handful. Not that I could, either! They honestly feel that whatever happens is God's will, so they more or less take no responsibility for what happens. I won't go into details, but they refuse to use good common sense if not other things. If anything short of the worst would happen, they will try again. So the concern is probably overblown but understandable.
EVERYONE: Someone over at Miss Crump's posted a link that y'all will like. It's a play on "The DaVinci Code" (yuck!) that is very funny. Go to www.The MayberryCode.com and click on the "Mayberry Code" icon, then play the trailer.

Howdy all! AFD here! Hope everyone is well on this fine day.
Our gas is 2.74-2.79, not too bad considering what some of the rest of you all are paying for it.
I am so disappointed - buckeye mentioned Thelma Lou going to be in Marshfield MO this weekend - I only live a half hour away, but we are going back to my folks' this weekend to finally celebrate our Christmas, so I'll miss it. : ( (and thanks for breakfast, buckeye - I had Grandma's Pancake Breakfast and it was delish!)
I took my 5 yo daughter to Kindergarten round-up last week and she did pretty good. She went into the classroom and had recess, we rode the bus, and had lunch in the cafeteria. All in all a good experience, except she has this complex about people looking at her and she started having a fit in the girl's room before we left when a 1st grade girl asked for her name. Hope she gets over it before August gets here.
Nice to see some new faces - stick around, we're good people who love TAGS and I'm sure the same is true of you all as well.
You mentioning the in-laws working on #10, M-T, makes me think of the family in Arkansas (the Dugger's) who've been on some Discovery channel specials (or maybe TLC) that have 16 kids. I think the momma's a little over 40 and she said she'd love to have more. She's only had 2 sets of twins in the 16 that she's had. She is very organized and it really was interesting to watch. One question people wanted to know about their family is if they were on public assistance of any kind. They said no - just bought used and always paid cash. They were debt free. Really a neat story. I'd say some people are called to have that many and some are not and it's a shame when people who are not do - makes it hard on all the other kids when more are added. (Just my 2ญญ cents there)
Well - prayers for all! Have a great day.

AFD: I saw that program on TLC about the Duggers. Yes, they are extrememely organized. It definitely is not like that at the in-laws.
Also, I'm sure that your daughter will do fine. Ours was extremely shy and would flip out if something embarrasing happened or for some other all eyes fell on her. Forget participating in something like the Christmas pageant. She even spent her first couple of soccer games crying on the sidelines refusing to play. She went to preschool at age three and again at four, though it was only a couple hours each day two days a week. She made a little progress on the social interaction front but not a lot. Until Kindergarden. Now, she has a bunch of friends and can't wait to get to school each day. She's still shy in some social situations, but the change has been amazing. Just gently encourage your daughter and be patient. We found that gently nudging was okay but not to force. Don't get frustrated. And that's easier said than done when you see other little kids happily playing with one another and yours is hiding behind your leg. She'll do fine.

Hi Everyone. Buckeye, Sean loves to go to the destist because of the "laughing gas" they give him.
This morning, I put 75.00 in my gas tank, which only filled it to 3/4's of a tank, then the dentist which cost me 195.00 (with insurance) to pull 2 of Sean's teeth, ordered Sean's new glasses which cost 159.00, then went to the grocery store to get dinner for the family for 2 days and it was only 30.00 with coupons. Whew! Kids are so expensive I don't know what your in-laws are going to do, MDC. If your sis-in-law is getting gestational diabetes with each pregnancy she really should be thinking about the potential of getting sick and not being able to care for the family she has.
Well, Hubby came home this afternoon and told me he had arranged for family to keep the kids and he was taking me away for the weekend. Isn't that sweet? He knows we need some alone time. Earlier today, he wanted to talk to me alone so he said, "let's go in our room and talk" so we went to our room, closed and locked the door to be alone for a few minutes while Sean was out playing and Erin was watching TV. I am not kidding when I say that within 30 seconds, Erin was knocking at the door asking if she could have a muffin. About 30 seconds later my dad was knocking at the door to give me my mail and after trying the door knob and finding it locked he slid the mail under the door while hollering, "I'm sliding it under the door!". Approximately another 30 seconds after that Sean was trying to get in to ask if he could go down the street to his friend's house. We just gave up and went our seperate ways. No privacy around here at all and it is taking its toll!
Better go finish cleaning the kitchen...BREAK TIME OVER!

SPOT, did you watch American Idol tonight? Do you have a favorite to win? I like all of them this time except the blond from Texas...kind of ditzy and not as good as the others.
Good one, Buckeye! No, Sean had to see a dentist AND an eye doctor. Turns out he is near-sighted. He was bugging me about getting a haircut today (oh, that was another 10 dollars we spent today) and he begged me to let him shave it close like a Marine cut. I gave in and he looks hilarious. Anyway, when we went to try on frames for his glasses nothing looked great because of the haircut. Poor kid, at least it will grow out. His head looks like a white bowling ball!

on the subject of public schools (well we are now)... ;-)
i wanted to share this article entitled:
"Baptists: Plan exit from government schools. New resolution tells churches to develop strategy for pulling kids out"
Here's a snippit from the article:
"If you approve of a school system that is indoctrinating children with cultural Marxism and dogmatic Darwinism, devoting increasing time and resources to instructing children in the colorful folkways of homosexuality, and preparing them for a future as hewers of wood and drawers of water, by all means continue talking about 'reform' and children as missionaries. Responsible Christians, however, will plan so that no child is left behind."

INTERESTING!
April 26, 2006 - Msg 37272:
I haven't read the article yet, DAPH, but I have mixed feelings about the sentiment right off. My wife and I decided to send our kids to a Christian school, but it was neither an easy decision nor one that is universally "right." We feel it was right for us but may not be for others in different situations.
I would never advocate mandating that all Christians should pull their kids from public schools or they are doing them a disservice. First, some public schools are worse than others, and some are plain great. Second, I know some families who feel that they must send their kids to public schools to be "salt and light." In fact, I know Christian kids in public schools who have brought friends to faith through their witness and efforts. Third, while we shouldn't lead our kids like lambs to slaughter (no pun intended), what would happen if all Christians pulled their kids from public schools and so stopped their efforts to reform them? In my opinion, it would be unchristian indeed to just throw the system to Satan and with it all those other children. Anyway, that's my five cents (inflation, y'know).
Take care.

I also add...Fourth, I, my wife and lots of young adults (and older adults) that we know made it through the public school system with our faith intact. You aren't doing your children by blinding them to evil; instead, you must equip them to face it head on. I feel I can better combat things like evolution and the like because I fully understand the opposite argument. Anyway, I promise I'll climb down from the soapbox now...

April 26, 2006 - Msg 37274:
Hi you guys,
Daph here! move over on your soapbox, M-T! ;-)
i'm mixed about the above subject too, in all honesty. i posted it because it's interesting that it's going on or being called for--that we live in a country that is on the downward spiral flush, and Chrisitan groups are even wanting to do something like this. like my previous post a few weeks ago, about an organization (i don't recall who) wanting to call on Christians to voluntarily move to NC and become their own country so as to live life the way our founding forefathers intended it to be... i was mixed about that too. as tempting as it sounds, to run away and hide, or congregate only with other Christians, it is true the world would be deprived of the fruits of Christianity... but do you ever get so frustrated with all the garbage going on on a daily basis, that "throwing in the towel" sounds better than fighting these battles? i know that sounds selfish, but i'm tired of what i see, read and hear about every day (removing the 10 commandments from public, the ACLU, illegal immigration, homosexuality, everyone demanding rights that are stripping me of MY rights to have certain things, like prayer in school)... sheesh! i'm sure you all feel the same, so what can we do then?
seriously, at some point SOON, God must say enough is enough and send Jesus down to rapture us. i'd rather live secluded on a farm somewhere, living off my land and homeschooling my kiddo (waiting for Him ;)), than throw her into the public schools pit of indoctrination that goes against everything i teach her, and hope she turns out okay. my days in public schools were not like what is going on today. i don't remember watching a film as a kid that says "Meet my two mommies"!!
so is it selfish? or is it wise? i'm mixed too!
ahh... nice discussion for this forum this early in the day! (sorry guys--got on a venting roll)

Oh no, not the subject of public school again! I always get so hot under the collar about that one. I love you guys, every one of you so I am holding back. All I will say is that after the research I have done on the subject I am in favor of Christians removing their children from public education in order to save this generation. Statistics show that far more people who are attending public schools leave the faith than propogate the faith, so to speak (the theory of salt and light). If we were to give our children a christian education in the home or in a christian school, we would be be growing up strong kids, educated in the word of God who could really make a difference in this world. I am afraid we are losing too many to the secular and humanistic way of belief. Now, having said that, I realize that some are thinking, 'what about those who can't afford it?'...I know that this current movement in the Baptist church offers solutions to families by encouraging churches to become schools for their members, schools they could afford, or using a portion of the tithe money to help those purchase resourses or stay at home, who want to homeschool their kids. I do believe strongly that Christian Adult teachers should infiltrate the public school system like crazy to be the salt and light to those kids and I think we should all, as adults get involved where we can. This is how I feel right now, of course that could change later. I try to consider the opinions of others carefully. Me-They, you are very intelligent and wise and I feel that if you read some of the resources that I have read you would change your opinion....could be wrong. I respect your opinion.
Daphne, I want to remind you of something that you might find encouraging. You remember when God made his covenant with Abraham and told him that his descendants would be like the stars of the heavens? He also told him that one day they would dwell in a foreign land (Egypt) and would suffer and be slaves for 400 hundred years? Well, that is what happened later and then God delivered them through Moses. My point is that God kept his promise and his people for those 400 years in a foreign land, with foreign Gods and customs. Remember that no matter how things look in this country, God will take care of you, as His child. Don't be afraid, just trust in Him and do what you know to do (keep yourself from idols).
Better go, I think I started another moulage.

Actually, like I said, this is something every Christian must pray and work out with God on their own. It is very possible he calls some to pull their kids out and others to keep them in. The problem comes when we make our decisions (whichever way) without consulting Him. So I have no problemo with your psoition at all.

Hello porch family. Storms here in SC. Several tornados in the area. Thank the Lord we didn't have any damage. A few power lines and trees down.
As for the school conversation...I kinda agree on the side of M-T. (Even though I understand where Boo is coming from) But my daughter graduated from public school and she never had to waiver in her faith. She wore Christian apparel and had scripture printed on her book covers. Everyone there knew where she stood (including teachers). She was very active in cheerleading. Their squad prayed before every event. This was all in public school. She is now in college, still cheering and still leading prayer before events. Now I know that every school will be different, but we have never regretted sending her to our local public schools. And again Boo, I know that there is a lot of garbage out there, but we felt she was grounded enough from our home life to make the difference. Also, sad to say, the two Christian schools in our area do not offer extra activities that she really desired.(which I feel is important) But that's only my opinion..for what it's worth.
I guess Spot is out there catching those big ones by now. Who's cooking? I'm not much of a cook but I'll be glad to help out.
Be back a little later...be blessed!

Good evening, everyone! Wow! Lots of interesting talk while I was working my two shifts. I'm finished now, don't have to be back at work until next Tuesday night. Woohooo! About the school thing, since I no longer have children in school, I'm probably not entitled to an opinion, but of course, I have one anyway. (heehee) My position is somewhere in the middle, I guess. A good argument can be made for pulling Christian kids out of public school, as well as for leaving them there. I think the answer is for each family to pray and consult the Lord, and then do what they feel He is leading them to do. I don't think there's a blanket answer. God has a specific plan for each of us, as individuals or as families, and He will make the way plain if given the opportunity. Either way, parental diligence is a must, to be sure that the kids remain God-centered.
Mavis, I don't have a clue regarding your lilac question, don't know a thing about them. My best advice would be to run an internet search on lilacs. You're sure to find some good sites with lots of information regarding the growing and propagation of the lovely things.
I have one of those wooden, jointed rulers. They're very useful. I used mine just a few weeks ago, to measure the depth in various areas in the fish pond. You can just bend it at a right angle, extend it out over the pond and dip the vertical end in the water until the end touches bottom, and there you are! Try that with a roll-up tape! Mine was my husband's, he got it during our second year of marriage, as we were measuring to hang some windowshades.
It has been downright chilly around here the last couple of days, and my pansies have just perked right up, their little faces all fresh and cheery. I love it!

Thanks Ro yer a treashuh! Can I post a view about schools from a different side of the fence? I graduated from Christian school, Bethlehem Baptist Christian Academy in VA. While I DID have more help from teachers since there was a smaller student to teacher ratio, & I did learn alot about the scriptures, since it was a main class for us all to take, BUT, when I came to math, science, history, things like that, when I graduated & got out in the "real world" I found I was lacking some in those areas, and I was sorely lacking in social areas. Since the school & the church placed so much imphasis on Bible, & church, they didn't realize that students were going out into the world, needing to know more about math, (geometry was the highest level offered) science, (very little biology was offered) etc. Socially, I ended up making alot of bad decisions, because I didn't have the opportunity to socialize with "the outside world". Now I am not saying Christian schools are bad & public schools are good, I am just stating MY experience & some of my classmates have told me they did the same thing.
Ok, done with my $.05 worth. I'm off to do bookwork. Big Maude I actually found gas here in Bristol for $2.79 & thought I was getting a deal, how bad is that?

That's an interesting point of view, Mavis. I have never heard that before. Guess it depends on the school, though, like we have this Catholic school here locally that seems to turn out really high achievers. Guess it just depends. The fact is that kids that graduate from private schools or are homeschooled, percentage wise, score higher on SATS.
I think I had better get off this subject before I make someone mad at me! By the way, you are a good sport, Me-They.
Thanks for the comment about the kids, MDC, that was very nice.

Daphne, I just looked up that website you listed and read the article. I have to say I agree with it. The book mentioned in the article, The Harsh Truth About Public Schools is one I have talked about here on the porch and I highly recommend it. I think Bruce Shortt does a great job of making us aware of the dangers of government schools and backs up his facts. I know taking kids out of public schools seems radical but I believe our times call for radical action when it comes to our children. I think there are many loving and concerned parents who just don't know the truth and Bruce Shortt is trying to get that urgent message to us.

Hey .. I am so happy to be back up and running. My computer problems were just as bad as Barney's first car. I see now that the porch has become a political front. I plan on sending my son to a private school. Yes it will cost me and I will have to work harder but the comfort of knowing that he will get a good education with teachers who care and the discipline he needs to know how to survive in this crazy world and the stability of knowing that he doesnt have to worry about gangs or being pushed into something that he doesnt want to do by other students will be a plus. Also I if need be will be able to talk to other parents who have the same plans for their kids. I feel that if you want to be able to raise your child to be a success start before they hit the school doors and then they will remember what you said. My prayers to you Dixie Good to see MDC,Lucy, and Boo are still here. Much love to you and yours ... Gas here in Douglasville, Ga. is 2.98 and the lowest is 2.84 at the BP on Fairburn Road. I just keep putting in what I normally put in to fill it up when gas was 2.00 a gallon and dont drive as much. Trust me it makes a difference. If you stay the course and then cut down on driving you dont have to add more at the pump. Plan your trips and just stay here on the porch . Hey, Shazam. I'm glad you're back up and running. You always have good insights, and present them well. I'm not sure that I would describe us as being political right now, though perhaps we are. To me, it feels more like just a bunch of concerned parents and grandparents, airing their views about the bad boogers that are threatening their kids. Kind of like Andy warning Opie about going to the Remshaw house, or that old mine. I think there may be some public schools that are better than some private schools, and vice-versa. You just can't generalize, because there are so many variables. Sometimes, all it takes is one dedicated principal to set the standard and demand excellence of the faculty and the students, whether the school is public or private. I do agree, though, that the odds of the school being top-quality improve dramatically in the private sector. Your advice in the last line of your post above says it well. Look down the road, check it out, before you proceed.

I got my son a kitten from a friends litter and now it wants to sleep in my room every night. I know it's alone and has no one to play with but I bought it a bed a little scratch pole and catnip toys. Now all I can do is ignore it until it stop's meowwwing and it goes to it's bed. I feel bad but it keeps scratching me everytime I hold it. Also im highly allergic. Tonight my son is with his mother so guess who has me up so late? BOO: You're a good sport, too. I wouldn't worry too much about upsetting anyone with your point of view. You always present yourself kindly (even when you have strong opinions). Friends won't agree all the time. And, among friends, contrary opinions should be able to be aired at appropriate times, and in loving ways. You share because you care, and that always somes through in your posts.
I don't think of our talk as political, either, ROMEENA. To me, that gives the impression that our talk is meant to persuade, maybe even nastily. I believe that our talk here is respectful and consider it more just a discussion of different ideas among caring parents (and grandparents and neighbors). Romeena-That was an excellent summation of the "private/public" school discussion.
I reread my earlier post on the school topic and realized I might have sounded a bit harsh with regard to Christian run schools. Nothing could be further from the truth. I guess my feelings are that neither Christian nor public schools have a magic pill for educating kids. I agree with BOO that private schools have a much better track record with scores and grades but I think a lot of survey's have shown that most grades in either type of school improve or decline relevant to the child's home life.
John and Tiffany Black-Welcome, you passed the very stringent initiation with flying colors.

Good morning you wonderful porchsters--old and new!
Daph here...
you ALL have terrific insight on the public vs. private vs. home schools. all in all, i agree it comes down to prayer, trust and faith in God. where i live, here in dallas, the public schools really stink! all the upper class neighborhoods send their rugrats to prive schools in the area. so for me personally, i would feel much better if my daughter Jade (she's 12), was homeschooled, private-schooled, or we just move to another city. we are thinking of moving down the road a little ways to southlake, just so we can feel a LITTLE better about her attending the public schools there--rated one of the best ISD's in the state. so yes, one needs to consider all the variables, look down the lonesommmmmme road and consider it all, and just PRAY about it. God will lead, we just need to trust Him.
all you people ROCK by the way!!! :-)
