Morning Porch!
Sorry I've been away awhile again. Life seems to get so busy sometimes. Anyway, things are starting to look pretty on this end of the porch. The grass is greening up, and I have seen crocuses and even a few daffodils! Tulips can't be far behind!
And my Pistons are doing great! I can't wait for the play-offs. (The Red Wings are doing great, too!)
Me-They and Daphne (welcome by the way!) I read with interest your comments about not running away from the world, as well as not hitting the world over the head with my Bible! Sometimes I get caught up in an issue, like abortion. I have a friend who spent 15 years in prison for murder. This friend always reminds me that whatever the evils of the world are, they can all be solved by Jesus Christ. I know not everyone believes that, but I think it is a much gentler way to face the world, realizing the forgiveness and love of Christ is what is needed today, and not arguing down people I disagree with. My friend is someone I will always treasure for continuing to help me realize that!
Well, I have soooo much work to do. I am hosting Easter again this year, so y'all are welcome to come by for some Ham, Cheesy Potatoes, Casseroles of many kinds, rolls, salads, and lots and lots of CHOCOLATE!! That will be on Sunday of course!
Have a wonderful Mayberry Tuesday!

Hey everyone. Lots of excitement around here today. I just came back from a luncheon that featured Justice O'Connor as the keynote speaker. She is a remarkable person. Just passing through - tree-trimmers are supposed to be here any minute. They'd better be on time, because at 5:30 I'm outta here! Going out to dinner, then to see "Phantom of the Opera" at Fair Park Music Hall, compliments of my son and DIL - a Christmas gift. My DIL's mom (my best friend) is going too, as well as DIL. A "girl's night out". Should be a lot of fun, and I've heard some really great reviews on this presentation of The Phantom. I've never seen it, so am really looking forward to it. I have all the music, play it in the car a lot, but have never seen the show. Woohooo!

Hey DAPHNE, you have a wonderful way of sharing from your heart. I know its tempting to want to just run away but as the saying goes, "Where there are people, there are problems" (even in North Carolina.). I kind of think the answer is to spend time in the Christian disciplines (daily prayer, bible reading, etc) and ask God to lead us where we should be because He has a plan for all of us and can use us (and protect us) wherever we are. I have felt that way while living here with my parents. Sometimes it feels like the last place I care to be and I have done my share of complaining about it to all of you over the last year but the truth is, I have had the priveledge of joining God in his work here by being able to help more people and relieve alot of suffering (more than I ever did in the town I used to live in). I sure have wanted to run away at times, though and its been difficult. But what really matters in eternity, my comfort or God's plan, right?
MDC, I agree whole-heartedly with your opinion, especially about reaching our world, "one soul at a time". May God use you and bless you with an ever increasing faith, knowledge of His grace. Amen.

Wow! I'm home from "The Phantom of the Opera" and it was wonderful. Very well done. The staging and special effects were very impressive, and the voices were - well - hard to describe. Thrilling? Exciting? Amazing? Yep, all of those. Really enjoyed it.
You all were speaking of Holy Week - I was doing battle with a recalcitrant climbing rose yesterday, got in a big old fist fight with it. I finally won, but not without some scars. That thing has thorns like daggers, and it isn't afraid to use them. At one point, it had two thorns dug into my leg, some tangled in my hair, had dug a trail in my arm, and had impaled the back of my hand with a particularly nasty and determined cluster of thorns. Any movement on my part just dug one of the thorns deeper into some part of my body. As I stood there bleeding, wondering how I was going to get free, I suddenly had a mental picture of Christ with the crown of thorns pushed down on his head. No comparison, of course, but my own few thorns at least pointed my thoughts in that direction. I stood just frozen for a few seconds, with that picture in my mind, and then I saw them. On the end of one of the vicious canes, there was a cluster of absolutely beautiful roses. A lovely mix of sunrise colors, and a sweet fragrance - just so pretty. So, out of meanness, thorns and pain, beauty was born. I'm so glad God didn't let me overlook the symbolism there. I'll never look at that ornery rose bush in the same way again.
Well, I'm ready to turn in. The Plum has preceded me, and I'll get a grumbly growl from her when I make her vacate my pillow. Nothing more, just that little "Aw, Mom!" growl. So funny.
Have a wonderful day tomorrow, everyone. Sugarplum says 10-4. --Romeena

I asked, why do you want to die. . .his reply - so I can go to Heaven and see Jesus. I thought - wow - what childlike faith that is. At 8 - he had a sense of peace that many don't have as adults. He just loves John 3:16 and he understands what it means. During mule days he had $20 to spend - he bought a leather wallet with a cross stamped into it. MDC: The "Gospel of Judas" was authored about 150 years after Jesus' death, long after Judas could have lived. It is a Gnostic text. The Gnostics were a sect that denied the godhood of Christ, among other heresies. Although they are usually referred to as a sect of Christianity, most Christian scholars do not consider them such inasmuch as they deny the central theme of the faith. They "Gospel of Judas" may be put forth as a revolutionary "find" by the media today, but it has been around since the 1970s and in fact has been referred to in the historical record since the early church. It has never been considered part of the divine revelation nor part of the canon. It wasn't "covered up" by the early church but in fact was rejected as bunk. I wish the media, in their effort to hype something, would actually put out the whole story for once.

Me-They, you really seem to have your finger on the pulse of what is going on in the Christian world. Are you of a particular denomination or do you just like to be considered a follower of Christ? I was raised Methodist, attended Assembly of God for 10 years, and some Episcopal thrown in and now I go to a Baptist church so I don't really think of myself as Baptist, just Christian.
Buckeye, I think you meant to say, "version" not "perversion" when you were speaking of Me-They (just thought you might want to correct that) hahaha!

BOO: Regarding your censorship problem, somebody over at Miss Crump's had a similar problem recently. Floyd explained that sometimes the censor is catching a portion of an offending word that in part of a larger word. So it may not be immediately recognizable. Just a thought.
I don't know how "on the pulse" I am, but I try to stay current. We have similar backgrounds, though in reverse. I was raised Church of God and Assemblies of God. After not being very involved for several years (the college years), I became Methodist (United) as an adult and have been ever since. I now attend the same church that my family attended for generations until my parents. Ironically, after years and years as an evangelical Protestant, my dad, who was raised Roman Catholic, converted back to it about ten years ago.
I really enjoy my church. Methodist churches run the gamut from Baptist-like to Episcopal-like, more modern to traditional. Ours is in the middle. We are still fairly liturgical and sing hymns from a book--both things we really like (do you know how hard it is nowadays to find a good Biblically-based church that sings actual traditional hymns?). It's funny, growing up in the kind of churches that I did, formal liturgy was nonexistent. But I find things like reciting the Lord's Prayers, the Doxology and the Apostle's Creed each week very comforting and uplifting. I don't know about teh churches you went to, but the ones I went to as a kid were rather "loud" if you know what I mean. Some people really like a minister that gets excited. I do better with a quieter style.
I often don't agree with stands taken by the UMC (big "c"), but I'm one of those who would rather stay and work for reform rather than leave. Anyway, it's a great thing that God works in all kinds of churches, and that there's a "right" one for each and every one of us!
I've added Sean to my paryer list.

How-do, everybody! I'm sitting here trying to cool off a little before getting in the shower. Been working in the yard, put a lotus and two water lilies in the pond. That's a stunt, believe me, especially the lotus. It's planted in mud in a big round pot, like a dishpan, very heavy. I managed to get it to the middle of the bridge over the pond, then just picked it up the best I could and swung it out and over, hoping it would land upright and in the right location. It did. Leaves are now floating, as they should. Same with the water lilies, though they were lighter and easier to control. Then had to fish out and clean the pre-filter (nasty) and treat for algae. Does anyone else use those "quick-connect" thingies on your water hoses? My son got me some, and they're wonderful, especially for those fittings that are under water around the pond. There's no messing about trying to connect a hose fitting, getting it cross-threaded and all the other little annoyances that happen when you're standing on your head on the side of a pond trying to keep from falling in.
Gotta run - taking part of a dinner to one friend who just had surgery, then taking all the dinner to my other friend with the knee surgery, will stay the night with her. Poor Plum. She'll be all alone again - this is the friend who doesn't particularly like dogs. I keep telling her that the Plum isn't a dog, she's a furkid, but she's not impressed. Oh well, as I've said before, Plum doesn't have it too bad, back there in our bedroom. It's better than what I had when I was a kid! Cooler, anyway.

Hi you guys... happy evening to all you fine porchsters!
just having time to get caught up. starting with romeena, how was "Phantom?" you may hve already wrote in, but i'm stopping to type a bit as i read down. another one of my obsessions is LES MISERABLES. seen it 4 times but have yet to see phantom. i should go while it's in dallas but i can't seem to get a free weekend lined up while it's here.
Boo, very sweet of you to post that comment about me speaking from my heart. you all seem like great listeners (er, readers), and i know this is the place i can share what i feel. there's comfort sometimes in sharing things with strangers... a peculiar comfort, you know? you also made me laugh making fun of MDC's post! but are you sure we can't just run away? ;-)
and MDC, i loved your heaven comment about walking the streets of gold to the courthouse, and sit and play checkers, etc.... amen!
on the subject of Jesus of Nazareth, i have it playing tonight. i let my 11 year old watch the PASSION, which she bawled her little eyes out, and now she gets to see this 70's version which shares the whole story of Christ, and is a TAD milder! it's easter time and i grew up watching htis every year at easter time! love it!!
buckeye, you're funny!
HI SPOT.
oh, the other day i had a censor problem with my post and "Floyd" said i had to many exclamation marks. i deleted the xtra ones and had no problem posting my comment.
okay Romeena, glad to read you enjoyed Phantom. i hear it's wonderful!
hi to the rest of you who's names i didn't mention... you all are GRRRRREAT! :-D
have a wonderful night and a blessed ressurection season to those who don't make it back to the porch til after easter! ~daph

Hey to all, I been taking a little nap on the porch but now that I'm awake, I was wondering if anyone knows if that Johnny Cash movie about Easter is going to be on cable tv this week? It's an unusual movie but his singing and the landscape are fantastic.

Hey possum under a rock!-I believe it is the movie titled 'The Gospel, Road" 1973. John tells the story in a "heartfelt country style". He walks through the Holy Land and in his mind he hears and sees what was taking place with Jesus this week some 2000 years ago. There are really no actors, just him and June singing and looking around the towns and country side of the Holy Land devoid of people as sounds and thoughts come to mind . Kind of lonely, eerie and thought provoking. I don't know if it was filmed in the Holy Land or a set but it was very convincing,
Marty from Mountain Top
April 12, 2006 - Msg 36838:
Possum-I just looked up the movie on the internet and there was a cast of actors. I guess I remembered only certain parts of the movie with just the music and singing and the landscape minus any cast. I'm not sure why I did so, maybe because the scenes with Johnny
Cash's singing can leave a lasting impression and overshadow the acting in the movie.
Hey Rev- maybe you can shed some light on the Cash movie for us. Thanks

Dear Porch friends, Just saying goodnight to you all. Thanks for supper Spot, a 4 star meal once again. Rev, I will see you at the diner. I truly enjoy the fellowship with all of you. You are all great!! and it warms my heart to be a part of your wrap around porch. I am so glad that you share spirtual and faith based feelings and information. I grew up in and am still a member of a Southern Bapist Church that is very mission
oriented. It is what I call a medium sized church
(about 320 for Sunday School and close to 400 for Church. We do a lot of missionary work within the church family but outside the community and around the country as well as some foreign missions.Even though, we on the porch, come from varied religious backgrounds it is such a blessing to me to be a part of a faith based group of folks. Let's keep these prayer chains linking together. Remember Prayer changes things!! Take care and God Bless you all.

Hey to Marty, Dix, Daph, Big Maude and so many other new porchers! wELCOME!
DAPH- Yes, as we kinda get to "know" each other, we get a feel for how we react. While someone else may not understand a comment etc, we can josh around, as Boo did about the inlaws! Some of us have emailed a bit too, and so have gotten to know each other. Have you thought of posting a pix in Romeenas album? A great way to let us see each other too!
SPOT- wow, I think youre grownin veges for the whole porch. Now dont be makin squeezins, HA!
Me They- You also have a great Easter celebration! Spread the "Word!" (:
BOO- I agree, I didnt like the 2nd part much. All his questioning the commandments and the people if they should do it etc! Why did I just KNOW that was coming!! (I'd say HA, but it's kinda sad really!)
Well, Passover starts at sundown, and soon Holy Thurday will be here.
God bless you one and all! Prayers for the whole wide world tonight!

Evenin' Porch,
Thank you all so much for your prayers. So far, everyone seems to be handling everything well. I think its neat Uncle Jimmy's going to be buried on Good Friday.
I grew up and still attend (a different) non-denominational church. Both of my parents were raised Baptist so I consider that my fall back. My parents church is a small (150-300) country church that I loved. We all knew eachother. I now go to North Point Community Church with 10-20k people each Sunday. I don't like how big it is and you rarely see anyone you know, but the pastor (Andy Stanley, son of Baptist preacher Charles Stanley) is just so awesome and that's why we attend. Plus, they have wonderful children's productions. Still, I yearn for the small church and there's not very many here in Atlanta that survive. A friend of mines husband had to stop preaching at a country church here because of lack of funds.
Y'all sure are in funny moods this week. It must be the pollen highs, or has Otis been by lately?
Prayers to all!
Blessings to you and yours,
~Lucy Matthews

That's right, Maude. I sometimes think that is the main reason the Lord has as all meeting together, so we can pray for each other.
Bless your heart, RO, for being so kind to your sick friends. That's love in action.
Lucy, I changed my mind, let's grab the husband and kids and run as fast as we can to North Carolina! I have been having a struggle recently in dealing with certain friends/church members and would just like to run from it about now. I am praying that I wouldn't get angry or let bitterness grow in my heart. It just seems like there are so many Christians in the church who don't practice wisdom and love and it causes everyone to suffer. I had a friend jump on Sean over something tonight that wasn't fair. She was just taking her anger out on him and should have come to me if there was a problem. Her timing couldn't have been worse. Sean was in one of the Sunday school rooms alone because his Tourette symptoms were so bad that he couldn't stop jerking his head. She and her husband entered the room and got onto him about something and made him cry, instead of coming to me if they had a problem. They have a son who is 9 and has a problem with lying and stealing. Last week Sean was trying to help out the Sunday school teacher by taking something from the kid that the teacher thought he had stolen (because he had stolen things from her before). Well, that backfired on Sean and they got on him telling him he shouldn't accuse his friend of stealing when he didn't. The problem is that this kid has a history of taking things that don't belong to him but nobody will confront his parents because they won't believe. The kid lies to the parents and they believe the kid...you know the old story. Anyway, I feel kind of betrayed because she is my friend and I hate that she would do that to Sean. I never mind someone correcting one of my children if it is done in the right spirit but this wasn't. She was just mad that someone accused her child and couldn't let it go. She didn't know all the facts. Anyway, I really don't want to get mad about it or for Sean to build up anger or resentment. I am trying to use it as a teaching experience and talked to him about not holding bitterness against a person and to be forgiving. I was preaching to myself! haha
It is just a hard thing for a mom to stay sweet when someone is hurting her child. I just don't know if I should ignore the situation or something later. I don't think it would help becuase these parents are in some serious denial....hope you enjoyed another episode of As The World Turns! I feel better having just talked about it.
Well, time to think about getting some sleep. See ya tomorrow!
Boo

'Morning, all. In spite of your kind words, Boo, about me looking after sick friends - I wasn't much help last night. Thank goodness my friend is doing okay and was really quite able to stay by herself, because that's how it turned out. I got over there with dinner, she ate - I didn't. I just kept feeling worse and worse, then got chills and a fever, and knew I'd better come home. I did, and made it as far as the little half bath in my utility room near the garage, when the dam broke. I lost everything I'd eaten for at least three days, it seemed. Have been sick all night, feeling slightly better now, but still not good. I cancelled the tree trimmers for this morning, and am going back to bed pretty quick.
homemaker, what would one call a church of 35-50 members? How about "home"?
Is anyone else familiar with the rose "Mr. Lincoln"? Deep red, large blooms and fragrant beyond belief. I cut three yesterday, and have them in a vase on my desk. You can catch that lovely scent just walking into the room. Incredible!
Well, back to my bed. This is one of those bugs that makes your whole body sore. All I want to do is sleep, but gotta go get some insulin on board. How my blood sugar could possibly go up, I don't know, but it will without the insulin, whether I eat anything or not. Hateful disease, diabetes, but ever so much easier to manage these days, compared to a few years ago.
Well, off I go. Have a good day, everyone. I'll see you later when I'm feeling more like a visit. Sugarplum says 10-4. --Romeena

The church I belong to is a small church with a Sunday attendence of only 12 to 20 regulars. Feels like we have another family that would really miss us if we weren't there. There are probably over a 100 members but most don't show up. There is a much larger church nearby where we now live but it just isn't the same as that little church about 10 miles away where we were married in 1978. We lived near that small church but moved over to where we are now in 1980. It just feels right being there.

Marty I have always attended small churches. The one we attend now is the largest I have ever been a member of and it is only about 200 on Sunday morning. We have small groups that meet on Wed. nights. I like a smaller church where you really get to know people. When I attended the Assembly of God it was so small we were all like family, so I know what you mean.
I just watched a DVD that I rented the other day and its due back today so I was FORCED to postpone my chores and watch it (how's that for an excuse?). It was a really good, wholesome movie called Dreamer about a little girl and a racehorse. Has anyone seen it? If you haven't you need to, trust me, it is wonderful! It stars Kurt Russell, little Dakota Fanning, and Kris Kristofferson. Only one questionable word, no s#x or violence and a really nice lesson to the story. Exciting, too. I give it 4 stars and 2 thumbs up. Watch it with the kids or grandkids.

Yo Spot- Hows bout directing some of that heat to the north or north central part of the porch. I bet the porch mayor's roses could use some of that warm air if he is going to get them ready for the flower club competition. He can't depend on Opie knocking Aunt Bee out of the competition with that football again. I got some major yard work to get done and I don't get motivated until the warm weather arrives.
Request- How many porchsters have made it to the Mayberry Days Festival in Mount Airy at least once? The wife and I were there once and we want to go back again. Spot mentioned something to me about wondering if any porchsters were thinking of visiting this year's event. Some of my connection to the south:
The new pilates exerciser arrived , it was shipped from Rocky Mount, NC. My VW Boys cd is on its way from Weaver's Store and my dvd "Return to Mayberry" has arrived-appears to be a copy from a VHS.
