April 03, 2006 - Msg 36480: Evening to you all, home from work now, finished supper (hamburgers and broasted potatoes), too tired to do much else. My kids went back to school today following spring break. This time change has all of Big Maudes family adjusting.
Boo, what a mess for you and your family to live around. Hopefully, your sweet and generous spirit
will be a blessing to some of those people. I will keep you and your family in my thoughts. You guys have a good evening. Big Maude

April 03, 2006 - Msg 36481: Thanks Maude! What a sweet thing to say. I am trying so hard to keep a right heart but sometimes I don't feel very sweet. I get really mad sometimes. I know what you mean about the time change. I have been very tired today and can't wait to fall into bed and sleep. Tonight is my TV night, though. I like to watch Wife Swap and Super Nanny.

HAHAHAHAHA!! That is really funny, Sterling! You know, I kind of like the sound of that....."Nuckeye"....hmmmm..

April 03, 2006 - Msg 36482: Hey to Buckeye, Sterling , Big Maude and all the porchsters. Does anyone on the porch live in an area that has little or no problems like Boo has described? We are considering
an early retirement < maybe< in the next year or two and we have a lot of nasty things going on around here also. So we were thinking of moving somewhere but where?????? I thought of Iowa but I believe that is where they had their one and only historic log cabin church burned down after some earlier repeated vandalism. Any thoughts on this?

Gosh Boo, I didn't know things were that harsh there. Sorry to hear that. Seems like are whole world has lost its mind sometimes don't it? Saddens me to think of that poor little pup laying there on the side of the road. The owner can't even give the poor little feller a decent burial. Sorry jerks!
Anyway, boy it's been a nice sunny warm day here finally. Took a mental health day and golfed and worked in the yard and just enjoyed some sun and fresh air and boy I liked it pretty good.:)
Glad your expense on the car wasn't as bad as it could have been Fungirl, but mercy that's an expensive hose. I guess it's knowing where to put it that makes it so pricey.
Guess I'll see whats cooking at the diner tonight. I bet it's that main dish concealed in a heavy sauce. I hate that!

April 03, 2006 - Msg 36487: Mavis, it blesses my heart to hear you say you love the place you are living. I would love to be able to say the same. We are here in South Texas because of my husband's job and our elderly parents. It is hard sometimes to think about some of the beautiful places we could be living. I love the Texas Hill country and would love to live in Colorado...maybe some day.

Marty, alot of folks retire down here on the Texas coast and love it. The little town I am living in now is the problem but the town I moved from (just outside of Corpus Christi) was really nice, right on the water, very nice people. In the almost 20 years that I lived there I never saw strays or anything near the horrors I see here in this place I am living now. When our house is built we will be living only a few miles from here but the neighborhood is alot better.

I forgot to tell you guys that I found out that they are probably going to build a church sanctuary on the land next to ours so I am happy about that. Should be pretty quiet most of the time and will probably be a few years before they begin.

Did any of you watch Wife Swap tonight? They had a real jerk of a guy on the show tonight from South Carolina.

SPOT, sounds like that yard of yours is going to be gorgeous, all that hard work will be well worth it.

We have been having a terrible drought here and things are not as green as usual. I heard that cattle are actually dying in the stock yards. We need rain very badly.

Yes, ASA, sometimes it seems like the world has gone crazy. I guess we have to try and concentrate on the positives like love and family and good friends like all of you. On that note...have a peaceful night's sleep!

April 04, 2006 - Msg 36490: As for my car repair, they towed it, did a diagnostic check and fixed the hose and reset something...not sure what that means. I was very pleased as I was expecting a bill three times that size. This place is very trustworthy and has a good reputation around our small town. My ex took his car to another place here and ended up without a car for three weeks. And then it was over a thousand dollars. I suspect they were tearing up as much as they were repairing...just seemed fishy to me that three different things went wrong within a couple weeks of each other. From now on, he needs to go to BOBS....

As for living in a small town...I love the town where I live. Its no Mayberry, but its friendly and we have lived here for ten years. I moved alot as a kid, but Kyle has been in the same school system since Kindergarten. I am not thrilled with the school system's special services dept. but other wise, I have no problems with the school district at all.

Hope all is well for each of you. Take care...

April 04, 2006 - Msg 36491: Just reading the archives from two years ago today....On a post from that day, someone asked for the words to a child's song. Never noticed that anyone posted the words. Here they are as sung by a friends mother when I was about ten years old

Hello my play mate
Come out and play with me
And bring your dollies three
Climb up my apple tree
Slide down my rain barrel
Come out my cellar door
And we'll be jolly friends
Forever more.
So sorry playmate,
I can not play with you
My dollie has the flu
Boo hoo boo hoo boo hoo
Aint got no rain barrel
Aint got no cellar door,
But we'll be jolly friends
Forever more.

As for wife swap, Yes I watched it, and you know what it taught me?? "I have learned in whatsoever state I am to be content." I believe the apostle Paul said that....correct me if I am wrong. I am in need of prayers in handling this divorce. This is the hardest thing I have ever had to handle.

April 04, 2006 - Msg 36496: Good morning everyone - so sorry that I have been lacking in my porchly duties.
Mule Days was great but I just emailed Best WEstern corporate about some of the stuff that happened in our hotel. We were in round one of the storms that hit Tennessee on Friday. We were under a tornado warning, the sirens had been going off and we were on the second floor. So - I got my children dressed and we went downstairs to ask them where we should go for shelter in the hotel. He had the nerve to tell us to go back into our room, go in the bathroom, and cross our fingers that there would be no tornado. I found this totally unacceptable. We ended up that the hotel only had the golf ball size hail and no tornado. Just amazing. Then the couch in our suite was full of rips, there was suppose to be a way to cook in the suite and all we had was a mini microwave. Just amazing!

Well - time to get to work.

April 04, 2006 - Msg 36498: Morning, hope all are well.

Fungirl, I know what you mean about being happy with what life gives you. I couldn't believe the way those people were acting. So self-righteous. They said they lived their lives by the bible but the mom was telling her own daughter that she hated her. They somehow missed the whole biblical concept of love. Very closed-minded, judgmental people. I hate to see people practicing religion without grace. The other family certainly had their problems but seemed like much nicer folks.

Homemaker, I'll bet that was an bad experience, alright. It's a shame, they should refund your money, I think.

Better face the day. I am trying to get my nerve up to clean out the refrigerator. Not a chore that I like.

Boo

April 04, 2006 - Msg 36499: Hey Boo. I didn't see the show but I find often in these types of shows the producers seem to find what I would call fringe religious zealots for there shows. Everyone of these I have ever seen seems to be with religious families they just seem to run across that have very harsh interpretations of the Bible and choose to live them to the letter of the law. Now I'm not critisizing anyone for what they believe, and if they live their religion, good on them. But it sure seems the producers always seek out these folks and portray them in the worse possible light. Just me observation on the subject. I don't know if I have ever seen just a normal God believing family on these shows, but then I don't watch much of them so maybe they do.
Homemaker, I don't blame you for being upset about the response about the tornado warning. That's crazy. But don't beat them up about the cooking accomadations to much. I mean you do have a reputation that stretches all the way to the rocky mountains where your cooking talents are concerned. Didn't they ever get that Holiday Inn rebuilt that you cooked in last year? :)

April 04, 2006 - Msg 36500: Hey Y'all!
Boy has the porch been busy in 24 hrs! My son and I are travelling to my parents house in Kentucky tomorrow so there's lots to be done. I cleaned and vacuumed out the car, and packed my clothes. Yesterday I went through our summer clothes to see what fits or we just don't like so I can take those to family members, consignment, or Goodwill. Its that time of year. This afternoon I have to make sure my husband has food prepared and laundry done. Today is his birthday so I'm making a chocolate pie since he's not a cake fan. I wanted to make a few comments to my friends here,
Boo- What's the update on the animal by the road situation?
Marty- It seems everyone is moving here to Atlanta. Its growing like groves. If you're wanting farm country you'll have to move a ways away, but then you'll have the best of both worlds. I grew up in a small town, much like Mayberry, and I loved it. Someday I hope to move to an equally quaint town.
Asa- I agree with you that they find weirdo's for these shows for ratings and then show the worst sides. My husband says they do that to The Apprentice also. Yes, the world has gone crazy. Remember my rant a couple of weeks ago!
Homemaker- You deserve either your money back or certainly a free stay at another time. If you go high enough that will happen. We use Marriott all of the time and they treat us the best.
Dixie- I remember those days and I will pray. I guess that's why you do it when you're young! For awhile I was taking 20 hrs and working 30.
Fungirl- Thank you for reminding me of that song, it put a smile on my face.
Spot- You should send pics to Romeena of your yard when its completed. I'm always good with cracker barrel. Hope to be stopping by there during my travels this week. They have the nicest bathrooms, dont ya think?
Hey to the rest of the porch.
Well, I'd better get busy. Y'all have a great day!
Blessings to you and yours,

April 04, 2006 - Msg 36501: Good afternoon folks! The porch is a sight for sore eyes after a busy last couple of days. Who's got the Epson Salt?

I went to the doctor this morning and have this observation that may even end up some sort of scientific truism: the quality of the magazines in the waiting room has an inverse relationship to the amount of time you have to wait for the doctor to see you.

Well, I haven't had a chance to catch up on the archives yet. But I agree about the Christians on tv; I have yet to see Christians portrayed on tv like I experience them in real life. I hate to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but I do believe that producers go out of their way to find fringe zealots to feature as "normal" Christians. But, I guess outrageous behavior generates ratings, and ratings makes money. I suppose putting your typical honest, hardworking, unassuming Christ-centered family on tv would be a borefest to most. Still, it's sad that many nonbelievers form their opinions of Christianity based on people that have twisted the Bible into a pretzel.

I hope that you all have a wonderful afternoon.

April 04, 2006 - Msg 36513: Me-They, your theory sounds right on the money to me. I've long held the notion that there are groups using tv to get their agenda across; to normalize different behaviors.
And it seems to be working. After Kai came home from school, I looked in her bookbag and pulled out the little calender we get for that particular month - with activities; no school days; things like that on it - and was just disgusted to see "bunny day" typed in for April 16th. I crossed it out and wrote in "Easter", but I wanted to do more, as angry as I was. I think I will ask them when they plan to do their "bunny day" activities and then I will keep Kai out of school that day.
Sad that such a small town school could still be worried about offending pc activists and not by the (I'm guessing) majority of parents whose kids they are teaching who would be more offended by the exclusion of the word Easter than by it being there.

April 04, 2006 - Msg 36514: Mavis, Boo, Lucy Matthews and fun girl - thanks for that info on how you feel about some of those palces you live/lived at. I have some books I keep notes in about retirement places. My wife Diane would probably pick the Gulf Coast of Texas. She loves the ocean and beaches. I prefer an area not near interstate highways, just like when Mayberry realized that the new road going to My Pilot was actually better for the residents. My former home town about 20 miles north of where I live now sits between two truck stops on Rte. 81. Main Street is one 18 wheeler after another. I remember when the politicians announced that Rte 81 will be built and go right thru my town, all the adults thought that the great jobs would come too. Well, we're still one of the lowest paid areas in the country plus we have all that traffic and the drug traffic from NYC and Philadelphia just 2 hrs. away. It's hard to find a street without speeding traffic to ride your bicycle for exercise and relaxation. We load our bicycles into the van and at times drive an hour or more just to find a decent place to bicycle. I think I mentioned about a week ago that some friends of ours bought a place on the S Carolina coast below Myrtle Beach-Pawley's Mainland- they have only spent a few weekends there so far-they rent it most of the time. Anybody know about this area?

Sterling, I know how frustrated you must be. You know what is kind of ironic is that the schools don't want to use the word "Easter" because they probaly don't realize it isn't a Christian word but comes from the pagan word they used for their fertility rituals in the first century. If they knew it was pagan, I am sure they would be happy to use it. What we as Christians actually celebrate as the resurrection of Christ is The Feast of First Fruits, so a better name for Easter would be First Fruits (it comes right after Passover). Anyway, it will be interesting to see if they put the word Christmas on the December calander next year at Kai's school. By the way, if you ever consider homeschooling her I can help with some resources. It seems I recall that she is your only child?

Lucy, Erin saw the dog from a distance but I didn't let her get out of the car so it didn't seem to bother her until the next day and she came to me teary-eyed and started asking questions about a dog we had a few years ago that was killed by a car after she dug out of the fence. I didn't even know Erin remembered the dog but she said, "Mom, where's Ginger?" and I said, "Ginger who?" and she said, "Ginger that got hit by the car.". I reminded her that Ginger died and went to be with God and she kept saying she wanted her back and asking me questions about her Giinger's body. Then she started asking about my parent's dog Roxie who died a year ago. She said she didn't want to wait until she got to heaven, she wanted Roxie now. It was so sad. Later I heard her in her room calling Roxie's name and when I went to check on her she was sitting on her floor calling Roxie and crying her little heart out. I felt so sorry for her. It was like for the first time she was really understanding what death means. I held her for awhile and she said, "It breaks my heart, Mom." She is only 4, poor baby. You all know how difficult she has been to raise until recently but I have to tell you that she has done an about-face and is like a different child for about the last month or two. She just brings so much joy to me now and we are so close. She is becoming a very sweet, eager to please child. Hooray! Finally!

Better go, I'll try to come back later.

HA! Now it all makes sense to me MDC and its pretty funny, too. I had forgotten about that episode with Barney in the trailer park! Don't tell me you live in a neighborhood like this one?! Thank you for your prayers, you know how much they mean to me.

Sean just came in here after having a talk with his dad. When I asked him what they were talking about he said, "I'm not allowed to tell you. You're a girl.". Guess since he turned 11, Bruce gave him "the talk". Remember that episode of TAGS when Opie got "the talk" from Andy and he already knew the information? Cute episode. I think its probably the same with Sean but he let his dad talk anyway. I never got "the talk" from my parents. When I was 11 my mom and my best friend's mom were friends and they got together and decided to buy my friend and me a book to read with all the facts in it (they were such cowards! hehe). We read it with horror...what a shock! haha

Well, think I'll go get the kids to bed. Goodnight All,

Well, they are horrified and making terrible faces and one girl asks Madeline, "How do you know it's true? Who told you?". Madeline states that her brother told her and one of the girls says, "Isn't he the one who said that if you bite your nails and swallow them a hand will grow in your stomach?!".

Hello everyone...so good to get back on the porch. Thanks for saving my rocker. Been thinking of you all while I was away.

PRAISE THE LORD...almost through with the new cd. It's been a lot of work.

I'm pretty tired. Haven't been getting much sleep over the last week so I'm heading off to bed.
See you all at breakfast.

You all have a blessed night. Prayer for you all!

Welcome back Rev. Did your voice hold out for you? I have some bug juice here if you need a few squirts.
Good luck on the interview MDC. Hope it goes well for you buddy.
Thanks for the link Mavis. I know the Amber Alert here has worked well and has resulted in several children being found faster.
Thanks for the vittles Spot. A feller has to keep up his strength.
I hear they have a new dessert at the diner. Baked Alaska, I guess it's after that new State up north. Think I'll try some for lunch.

April 05, 2006 - Msg 36539: Good morning, all! Just got home from work, headed for a good nap. I'm going over this afternoon to stay with a friend who just had a knee replacement. She's doing well, but doesn't need to be home alone, so I'm part of a team of friends who will do shifts with her until she's mobile. Gotta sleep a little while first, though.

Boo, to answer your question about the tree - you're right, I do use colored lights. You sent me some, remember? Looking at that picture, it does look like all white lights, but not so. The only white ones are twined down the trunk. The rest of them, over 2000 lights, are colored. I don't know why it looks like that in the picture. Also, the picture truly doesn't do the tree justice. I've never regretted buying it.

Well, off I go. Everyone have a great day. I gotta go get some sleep before I fall off this chair. Sugarplum says 10-4! --Romeena

April 05, 2006 - Msg 36540: thanks hm....i looked up the center at IU and found lots of info. I will call her tonight and give her your email. She has lots of questions and I am not sure what all she wants to ask. Rosa is now on the wheat free gluten free dairy free diet and is making amazing progress, but knowing my struggles with the special services dept here, she wants to be in touch with someone on the "know" so to speak. I will talk to her tonight.

That wheat free dairy free thing is pretty amazing. It has made worlds of difference in Rosa. I know it may not work for everyone, but for her, its been amazing!

Well friends, I need to go and take some ibuprofen. My back is talking to me.

April 05, 2006 - Msg 36541: Good morning all. Hey to SPOT, ASA, MAVIS, FUNGIRL, HM, BIG MAUDE, BOO and anybody else on the Porch this morning. You may see my wife in dreamland, ROMEENA; she worked last night, too. I hope that you are getting enough rest, MAVIS. Great news about the family, LUCY.

MDC: Now that you have some time on your hands you want to start a moulage, huh? Well, I for one completely agree with you about "The DaVinci Code." The best thing Christians can do about it is stay home; Hollywood will stop making such things when they become unprofitable. Money is the god of entertainment.

BOO & STERLING: While we can place some of the blame on the schools for trying to eliminate our Christian heritage from the schools, we have to remember that many sympathetic educators are caught between a rock and a hard place. The real blame comes back to parents--all of us. Even though its usually a vocal minority who want to completely secularize every facet of life, the majority has allowed them to hold sway over the society. We confuse tolerance and respect with acceptance and capitulation. If school boards are elected by the majority and those board insist things like "Bunny Day," it's not just the school's fault, it's ours. I feel for you, STERLING. My wife and I agonized over our decision to send our daughter to a Christian school--there are pros and cons each way. Even though we feel we made the right decision for us, financially it has made things very difficult. Okay, I'll step down from my soapbox now.

April 05, 2006 - Msg 36547: Bryson and I ended up not going to Kentucky today. We'll try again tomorrow. He woke up in the middle of the night with stomach "issues". We found out the boy he spent the night with the other day had the stomach flu while he was there. So, I've been getting toys and books ready for consignment/goodwill.
I agree with you all concerning Christians standing up for their beliefs. It seems only the televangelists are the only Christian's out taking a stand and making their opinions known. We should all have the guts. I saw on TBN Chuck Norris and his wife talking about having a Bible class in public schools. There was a number you could call to see what you can do in order to have it initiated in your local school. I didn't have a chance to write it down as I caught the end of it.
I'll be back later for some homemade ice cream and sweet tea!
Blessings to you and yours,

April 05, 2006 - Msg 36556: Evenin' Porch,
My son's tummy troubles seem to be better so hopefully we'll be on the road to Kentucky tomorrow. I'll be so happy to see my parents, and especially my grandparents. I'm blessed they've lived so long. Only lost 1 grandfather so far.
Rev- Thank you for the reminder for us to serve Him. Sometimes in this world we get so caught up in our everyday lives that we often forget he gave us this life. We're covered in pollen here in Atlanta also. There's no point in washing the car.
Buckeye- Thank you for the info on the website.
Big Maude- That's wonderful you're children and their youth group are doing mission work. I'll never forget my mission trip when I was 15 to Mexico. I'm sure your children won't either. Cookies sound yum.

April 06, 2006 - Msg 36560: For those interested in getting Christ back into the public school - one way is through Children's Evangelistic Fellowship. Local churches sponsor after school Bible clubs for elementary school kids - called the Good News Club. They have a snack, they sing, they have a Bible story, they have fun. Southern Indiana has the most Good News Clubs in the area. Almost every elementary school can be seen with the Good News Club. It is interdenominational so no organized religion gets upset. My children love it!
Another way is to pray for your children's teachers and their classmates.
Another way is to attend the board meetings of the school administrations - where do you think they get the ideas - from the liberals who attend the meetings. To be heard you must be seen at those meetings. If you want something done - do it!
If you have the opportunity - volunteer at your child's school. Let the other children see your positive role model. Not wanting to quote Hillary but it does take a village to raise a child - especially if they have a crappy homelife to start with.
Now - I am off of my soapbox.

Boo, I'm sure sorry you're having to deal with all that sadness. I can't abide mean people. Who said, "You can judge a society by the way it treats its animals?" I think Calvin Coolidge said that.

All the best on your new house. Looks like you'll have the lot adjacent empty for a while, too. That's always good. Even afterward, at least a church sanctuary is going in. Sounds like a peaceful place to live.

Which brings me to.... "Bunny Day!" Give me a break. I wonder how long it'll be before someone nixes THAT because it refers to Easter. sheesh...

Looks like I'm not the only one having car repairs. Seems a disproportionate number of folks I know are either getting dental work done or car repairs right now. I took my Accord to the shop yesterday for a brake job, valve cover gaskets and tune-up. It still has the original factory plugs and plug wires at 150,000 so I'd say it's time. :-) She's been a good little car; maybe I'll treat her to some premium next time I fill up. I hope they don't find any sawdust in the transmission.

I love the spring. I think I'll go out back, sit a spell and watch the trees leaf out. Yep, that's the plan... little sitting.. then watch the trees leaf out.. yep yep.

Everyone have a wonderful day. Prayers for all needing them.

April 06, 2006 - Msg 36562: Good morning everyone! I'm between meetings right now. I need to decompress. Meetings...well, I don't like them. I'll try and stop by at lunchtime.

M-T

April 06, 2006 - Msg 36563: Morning. That's good advice, Homemaker. In your opinion, do you think I would have a voice at the school board meetings since my kids go to private school? I pay school taxes and am very concerned for the kids who go to public school. I just wonder if they would listen to me. Do you think they might? I have a big mouth and I'm not afraid to speak up. Right now we are having an election here for a new mayor and one of the candidates is an old friend of my dad who used to be the city manager. I am hoping she will get elected because I want to have a talk with her and the city council about the dog problems around here! I think I'll tackle that first and then maybe the school board...I'm going to tell my friend who is an elementary teacher here about the Good News Clubs and see if she might want to start something in the public school here. I will email her today, thanks.

Lucy, hope you are safely on your way to Kentucky. You will have to tell me more about your trip to Mexico. We are only about 3 hours away from Mexico here in Corpus Christi so my church has a kind of sister church in Matamoros that we minister to. They are very poverty-stricken and we go down a couple of times a year and build houses for them. They are wonderful, thankful people. We like to send Christmas boxes to the kids and such, too. When I was in my early twenties I was in Guadalajara for a few weeks on a mission's trip and it was a wonderful experience. I still remember the songs we sang in Spanish!

Thanks for your kind thoughts, DES. I thought I was starting to toughen up but that puppy got to me. I am feeling better now. Thanks for the well-wishes. I am starting to really look forward to getting the house built. I like the idea of having, "a place for everything, and everyting in its place," as the saying goes.

ME-They, are you decompressed??

Took the kids to get their teeth cleaned yesterday and xrays--cost me almost 200.00 WITH insurance! That's a crime. Sean is going to have to have some teeth pulled in a couple of weeks and that should cost about the same. O well, costs less to deal with it now than later.

Can ya'll believe that next week is Easter and then before you know it them young'uns will be out for the summer. It is really warm here already (been getting up to 90 with high humidity). We had such a mild winter we never even had a freeze. The experts are predicting that we will have a bad flea and tick season because of it (oh, joy).

Well, lots to do to day. The laundry basket is overflowing! Dirty dishes in the sink, beds need to be made (where's Malcom when you need him?)....what's for dinner? I don't want to cook.

Boo

April 06, 2006 - Msg 36566: Hello, i'm new in here. I adore TAGS. It is also my 11 year old daughter's favorite show... pretty much the only TV she is allowed to watch in this day and age.

Here's my suggestion... Andy Taylor should be nominated for "The Father of the Century" award, if such a thing exists. If there was any way to make that happen, then perhaps it would generate a new buzz for the show, and remind folks of the values that once existed in American television, and maybe spawn a new generation of young viewers!

I mean, who hasn't wished at one time or another they had a father like Andy, or they were a father to their own like Andy! ;)

Wouldn't that be great?!
