Boo, Yea, it would be a goof idea to consult with a local arborist who can help you in picking tree's that will thrive in your climate and soil conditions. I love evergreens also. One of mt favorites is the Austrian Pine. It has a real forresty look to it. Don't know if you have seen them, or how they would do where you live, but you might check into them. The Colorado Blue Spruce is big around here too. Very pretty evergreen with needles being an almost light blue shade. The green spruce is pretty too.

Happy birthday to Sean. Them young-uns grow up fast Boo.

I need to get to the Home Depot today to buy some drill bits. I love going there. I will always take a stroll thru the lumber aisles just to smell the wood. I love thesmell of fresh lumber. Wish they made a cologne that could mimic it. I just wish our home depots had them hot dog vendors like they do at Romeena's home depots. That would be perfect.

March 31, 2006 - Msg 36393: Asa- know what you mean about that fresh wood . Yesterday Me and da wife went to Home Depot Sears and Lowes . Finally got my new table saw at lowes-light weight and a sawdust hook up for a shop vac. I'll be gettin some boards from the lember yard in Mt Top and refinishing the Br winder and convertin the second winder into curio display shelves. No winder boxes on these-maybe the front winders later. Lowes has a stand out front that sells hot sausage and peppers and onions sandwiches - smells like I'm at the Bloomsburg Fair. Glad to hear Mom and Mariah are doing well.

It's a nice spring day here in the south of Tejas. I was sitting outside a little while ago thinking of how my kitty loved a day like this. We had company over about six weeks ago and he darted out, unbeknownst to us, when one couple left. The last thing we talked about late that night just before bed was that we KNEW the cats were inside, safe and sound. I found him dead on the side of the road the next morning. Obviously a car had smacked him. He was a trusting little guy and I doubt it ever occurred to him that he could ever get hurt. Let me tell you, I was a mess. I guess it's going to hurt for a long time.

March 31, 2006 - Msg 36396: 'Mornin, everyone! Lovely day here. I've got a new iris open in the back yard. It's called "Thornbird", and opens a little differently than most. Irises usually open one bloom at a time, moving down the stalk one by one. This one has opened all at once. Five huge blooms, almost bending the stalk over. Spectacular! It was one of the imports my landscaper friend brought to my yard from his. His wife used to cultivate iris in a big way, though her health hasn't let her do much for the past few years. So, they have a huge untended iris patch, and he just dug up rhizomes and brought them here, not even knowing what kind they were. Lucky me! They're gorgeous!

You know what? Our Home Depot doesn't have the hot dog guy anymore! Makes me so mad, I loved those polish sausage dogs, with mustard, relish, onions, and kraut. And no, they didn't lay on my chest, either. I could eat two of them without even breathing hard. Sure wish he'd come back.

March 31, 2006 - Msg 36401: So sorry about your kitty, DES. I understand. The hardest I ever grieved over an animal was my cat, Bo (a big gray Tabby). I was about 13 when he died and he was one of my best friends. At that time in my life my mother was spending alot of time in Michigan tending her sick mother and my dad was gone from home alot and I was the only kid left at home so it was just me and Bo alot of evenings, curled up on the couch watching TV. Somehow that cat kept me from feeling too sad and lonely. When he died I thought I would too but being so young I got over it pretty quick. It still hurts a bit when I think about it (30 years later). I think I really bonded with him years before when he was hit by a car while following me across the street. He broke his jaw so I carried him around on a pillow and fed him milk with an eye dropper! Now I will add a little humor to this sad story...when it finally came time to bury Bo in our backyard family pet cemetary, his legs were already stiff and sticking straight out. My insensitive brother-in-law was helping me bury Bo by digging the hole for me. After digging the hole, he found it was too narrow to put the cat's body in due to the stiff legs so instead of offering to dig the hole wider he said,..."Hey, why don't we just bury him standing up?"....and we did!

Yes Asa, I have alot of homework to do before we get to the landscaping stage. I watched the old movie, Mr. Blanding Builds His Dream House this morning on Turner Classics. How funny! That were complaining about the house being too small and it was huge by today's standards and only cost them 18,000!

Speaking of hot dogs, I heard on the radio that Americans consume around 20 billion weinies a year! Horrors, all those Nitrates!

March 31, 2006 - Msg 36404: Wow, BOO, funny that you should mention my all-time favorite comedy! I've probably seen "Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House" dozens of times. I have it VHS and DVD. Cary Grant and Myrna Loy together are wonderful. Can you imagine getting 35 acres of prime Conecticut real estate and building a house like that on it for $18K? A buildable acre in Connecticut now is more in the $250K range (just for the lot), and I bet a four-bedroom, four bath Colonial like that would be another cool half a million to build in that market. Today, Mr. Blandings would have to make a whole lot more than the $15K he was making in the movie to afford that!

March 31, 2006 - Msg 36407: Howdy, all. Asa, the Austrian Pine is one of my favorite trees, though we can't grow them down here. Much too hot in the summer, and not enough winter cold. They just don't like our climate. So, you might ask, what has been my connection with them? They were my favorite Christmas tree for years! A tree lot in north Dallas was the only one who carried them, and usually only got a dozen or less. I had bought trees from Tony for so many years, though, that he'd leave the Austrians tied up until I got there in late November, then would have them unbound and let me choose mine first. How's that for service? I'd make my choice, and he would send it to the flocking shed for a heavy white flock. Let it dry a couple of days, then deliver it to me.

They were huge, about 8 ft tall and a branch spread of over six feet. They were unsheared, just natural in shape, not always symmetrical, but so lovely. One year, I chose one with a double top! Tony laughed, saying only I would want that one, but he liked it too. With the heavy white flock on those gorgeous, spreading, fanned-out branches, and nearly 2000 twinkle lights on it, it was "a picture no artist could draw". I stood a bright gold angel between the twin spires on the top.

Austrians do not droop and do not drop their needles, like all the spruces and firs will do. They may get dry as a broomstick, but their shape doesn't change and their needles stay put. I love them!

Then came the sad year about 12 years ago, when we unwrapped the new arrivals, and found they had all been sheared! Tony was livid, because he had marked them and ordered them left natural. They looked like they had been punched out with a cookie cutter, no personality or charm at all. I didn't buy one. I bought a snow white artificial tree instead, and that's what I've used ever since. I didn't know it at the time, but it was a good thing, because my husband died two years later, and I would never be able to go tree-hunting without him. That was a very pleasurable ritual for us each year, and I'd never do it alone. So, I put up my fake tree, and it's pretty, and that's okay. Things change.

Well, gotta go feed the Plum, and maybe myself as well. Sugarplum says 10-4! --Romeena

I thought it was a wonderful movie and very funny for that time period. I just loved the scene when Cary Grant and his friend Bill get locked in the storage closet together! The movie reminded me of one of favorites, The Egg and I, with Fred MacMurray and Claudette Colbert. Ever seen that one? I absolutely love it and have never been able to find it on DVD or video. Its about a man who lives and works in the city and his dream is to buy an old farmhouse and start a chicken farm. His wife is very supportive but has no experiene on a farm. They buy an old broken-down farmhouse in the country and are visited by Paw Kettle. It really is cute. If you haven't seen it watch for it.

March 31, 2006 - Msg 36428: Boo, the only Christmas tree pictures I have in an easily accessible form are fairly recent, since I got my first digital camera. The Austrian Pine trees are in some old pictures, which I'll have to locate and scan to get them on the computer. I'll post a couple of the white artificial tree, though. It's not too shabby, but nothing can touch the beauty of the Austrians.

Floyd, the new site is great! It will be fun to visit and to participate. I think it'll catch on and be used more and more, as we get familiar with it. One suggestion: I think it would be interesting to have a list of actors who played more than one role, and the roles they played. Allan Melvin played in six or more episodes, Ken Lynch was in at least three, and the list goes on. Even Howard Sprague was an insurance salesman before he became town clerk!

Well, off I go, not to the ironing board, but to my own comfortable bed. The Plum is already there, the lazy little loafer. She says 10-4! --Romeena

Boy, I really tried to sleep in this morning but my old aches and pains forced me up. I can't seem to stay in bed long without something hurting (maybe I need a memory foam mattress).

I have a question for any of you crafty folks who might have refinished any furniture. I found a really cute chair at a second hand store yesterday for 9 dollars. It looks like it was probably from the 40's and was a kitchen chair at one time. It is a little smaller than kitchen chairs you see now days but it will be perfect for Erin's desk in her room. It is a kind of dark wood and has been varnished and I want to paint it white and distress it or something to make it look old, I think. I don't know if I can just sand it or if I have to actually strip it and sand it before I paint it. Any experts out there??? I am trying to find answers on internet sites but have been wading through alot of info that hasn't helped me yet.

He was pretty, well.. firm, when we buried him, so I had hubby dig the hole extra wide and we buried him on his side. It was just, let's say, lots less traumatic that way.

How is everyone tonight? I really like to comment at least twice a day, but that hasn't happened lately. I have been having some health problems that I haven't shared because I feel like I'm always asking for prayers. But, here goes. On 3/20 I went to the dentist to get the prep work for a crown. That tooth had a old mercury filling that they removed. When they took it out they didn't use a dam and the "helper" (lack of the proper term) didn't use the sucky-thing to get the mercury out. So, I swallowed some mercury. By Wed. I was swelled like I'm 9 months pregnant (look about 5-6 now) and just uncomfortable. Hubby has been running tests to make sure its truly mercury poisoning and not something worse. It appears yeast has formed around the mercury making it nearly impossible to eat. I have eaten nothing but baby food for 10 days. So, the tests and trying to detox have been keeping me busy. My son's sunday school class has been learning about hope. Their definition is when something good comes out of something bad. The good is I have already lost 10 lbs, my coumadin overloaded liver is getting a break, and my fast food addiction is gone. That last one has been plaguing me for years. Hopefully now I won't go back to eating junk.
Well, I just wanted to check in and tell everyone why I haven't been as available. I'm not gonna ask for prayers, but they are always appreciated. I'll let ya know as things progress.
I'll read the archives and then post more tomorrow. Everybody make sure they have their alarm clocks ready for church tomorrow. This is the day the Lord hath made!

Went to a special preacher thing last night and one of the speakers made a comment that I thought was very profound.
"When the time for performance has arrived, the time for preperation has passed."
I really like that. It applies to a lot of things in life me thinks.
Well we are hoping for some sun today, after getting rain and snow most of yesterday. Might even get up to 60 tomorrow. But then more storms for mid week. Springtime in the Rockies. One of our local ski resorts picked up over a foot of fresh snow just yesterday. It is pretty, but I'm ready for spring!

Lucy, I have read about those mercury fillings and found out they put some in my son's mouth but they are in baby teeth. I am going to make sure they use the porcelain fillings from now on. I have a cousin who has had alot of trouble with Dandida growing in her body and she went to a special dentist to get her mercury fillings removed but I haven't heard how she is doing. I guess I will have to email my Aunt and find out. Sure hope you get your problem solved soon and I am really proud of you for kicking the junk food habit. I always say junk food won't kill you once in awhile but it sure will if it becomes frequent habit. Continue to sew those good seeds (healthy food) and you will reap the benefits in time....lots of pure water, too. I am preaching to myself, not you, Dear. Prayers for your strength and health and please don't ever feel like you can't ask for prayer. I love the priveledge to pray for my friends here on the porch.

I'm plum wore out! I was laying in bed with my eyes open at 2:30 and then up by 7:30 to get ready for church. This wretched time change always kills me for a couple of weeks. The preacher talked about men loving their wives like Christ loves the church....hope my husband was listening because I sure would love a nap and maybe he will watch Erin for awhile.

April 02, 2006 - Msg 36462: 'Evening, all. A lovely Sabbath evening, pretty and peaceful in my back yard. New irises blooming everywhere, all a surprise to me. My landscaper friend brought rhizomes from his own yard last year (did I already tell you this?) and planted them in mine, so I don't know what to expect until they open. He tucked them in here and there, and each one has been a pleasant surprise. Such a kind thing to do.

I have a friend in the hospital after knee surgery, and I was able to cut a very nice little bouquet from the yard today. Took it to her, she was so pleased. What fun to cut my own flowers!

If you see Mr. Wheeler, tell him he can drop by and pull some weeds if he wants to, but no spraying. I'll buy a quart of ladybugs if I see any aphids. No chemicals in my yard! Not many weeds either, actually, so coming here would really be a waste of his time. Good mulch and an application of corn gluten meal pretty well takes care of the weeds.

Well, the Plum just announced that it's past her supper time, so guess I'd better go feed her. She gets uppity if she has to wait too long. You all have a great evening! Sugarplum says 10-4! --Romeena
April 02, 2006 - Msg 36463: Oh, by the way, I guess it's true - to each his own. Personally, I just love daylight saving time. The long evenings are a treat for me, because I can enjoy my yard for an extra hour. That was a feature I liked about Mongolia - didn't get dark there until about ten at night. I suppose it saves a bit on the electric bill as well - don't have to turn on lights in the house quite as early. I never have any trouble making the switch, I just set my clocks forward when I go to bed, and the next day, it's business as usual, except the day lasts longer.

I knew a fellow once who swore that the "jet lag" he got when flying from Chicago to Texas just wore him out for days. I always thought that was odd, considering we were in the same time zone. Hellooo?? Of course, he was the one who was against solar panels to generate heat or power, stating that we were "pulling all the solars out of the air, and the sun was going to go out." Not the sharpest knife in the drawer, bless his heart.

Ro, that's pretty funny about your friend and the "solars"! I'm glad the time change doesn't bother you. As I recall, it didn't bother me as much when I worked night shift. Now that I have to get up early and get Sean to school it is harder but it won't take too long to get used to and Sean starts summer vacation in 6 weeks. Sounds strange but I am just one of those people who likes the night. I start to feel relaxed and less anxious about things after the sun goes down. I like the winding down after dark, the kids sweet-smelling after their baths and we can just be together. Seems like when it gets dark late, we are out later and spend less quality time with the kids. My fondest childhood family memories are of the evenings we spent together watching TV or playing Monopoly, bath-time, stories before bed, etc.

Well, I had a disturbing experience this evening. I was driving on the highway near home and noticed a pup laying dead on the side of the road and his brother standing over him. They were small dogs, looked like Rat Terriers, not fully grown yet. I found a safe place to pull over and a friend and I got out to see if the little dog that was down was still alive. He wasn't and the other little dog ran from us into a ditch. We got some of Erin's left-over hamburger and tried for quite awhile to lure the pup close enough to get ahold of him but we never could. We crawled through the ditch and through thorns for nothing. I didn't know what to do (since there is no animal control on Sunday!) but I was afraid the other pup would get killed so I picked up the dead pup, who was still warm, poor little thing and I put him several feet from the road near the ditch to keep the pup who was alive out of the street. I went to a house not far from there and told a lady about it and she knew the owners and told me she would go tell them. The whole experience just made me feel so bad. After all I have been through around here with dogs, I am starting to wonder why I live here. I wish I could change things and make pet owners more responsible but I don't know what to do. I mean really, can you believe how many dog-related problems I have had since I moved here?

I think I will spend some time with the kids before bed and maybe it will lift my spirits.

According to the news this am, west Tennessee had much more severe weather and some storm related deaths. We need to keep those folks in our prayers. I am greatful we dodged the worst. Hey to everyone else!
I'm still dealing with my issues, but its in the Lord's hands now. I wanted to tell y'all something cute. Yesterday our preacher was doing a sermon called "Rebel Yell". As soon as he told the title at least 1/2 the congregation (about 5,000 people) yelled. I tell you, when are they ever gonna get that we lost the war! I hope I'm not stepping on any toes because I love the south and I'm a true GRITS, but that was 146 years ago when the war started! Okay, off of the box.
Better get some cleaning done (Otis, where are you?) and I promised my son I'd take him to Chick-fil-A where he'll eat yummy chicken and I'll eat baby food, blah. Have a great day everyone!

Another new iris opened today - they are so beautiful. It's like a treasure hunt for me - I don't know what to expect, because I didn't buy them, and I have no idea what they're going to look like until they open. Such pretty things.

April 03, 2006 - Msg 36473: Thanks for the sympathy, folks. I feel alot better today. Lucy, I didn't move from the city, actually. I was living in a fairly small town that was more up-scale, I guess you would call it and I moved just 10 miles away to the town I grew up in and it is just a different culture. There seem to be more folks here who are..irresponsible and hurting. I am living in my parent's home until my house is built and they are in a rural area with lots of neighbors who have drunken parties on the weekends, let there dogs run loose and only seem to feed them when they feel like it, if at all. You know the kind of folks I'm talking about, missing teeth, old cars all over the yard...confederate flags in the windows of their mobile homes! hehe(sure hope I'm not offending anyone, don't mean to). Its just that since I moved in here over a year ago I have seen so many heartbreaking things like I never saw where I lived before. I have shared all these things with the folks on the porch and it has helped to talk about it and get it off my chest at times. I'll just give you some examples of some things I have dealt with: I found a little dog near death and covered with mange. My sister took her in and finally had to have her put to sleep because the treatment didn't work. I have taken several dogs to the animal shelter who were starving or injured. I have added two dogs to our family this year; a black lab who was starving, and a terrier who was dropped. I helped a family up the street look for their 2 year old who fell into an open septic tank and died. A woman who had no food came to the house to use our compressor to air up her bike tire. She had been across the street picking wild grapes for something to eat. I tried to find her later to give her food but I couldn't find her. I still look for her around her with no luck. These are just some of the things that I have experienced but I think I need to adjust my attitude and instead of getting mad I should try to look at it as a priviledge to in some small way help someone or something. There must be a reason for it all. Maybe I had been kind of living a sheltered life before.

April 03, 2006 - Msg 36474: My stars, Boo! I had no idea you were living in Deliverance County! Well, that's what it sounds like, anyway. I can't imagine dealing with stuff like that on a daily basis. Sounds like some of the conditions in Mongolia. There are almost no trash cans there, they're not needed. If you're eating something and don't want it all, you just put it down in a reasonably clean spot and walk away. Within about two minutes, it's gone. Paper, plastic, cardboard, cans - all are nabbed as soon as you put them down and sold to the local recycler. Thirty water bottles gets enough to buy a small loaf of bread, we were told. It costs about the equivalent of 3 cents, US. Believe me, the streets are clean - no trash.

What on earth will you do about the neglected and abandoned animals? You can't keep them all. Is there a decent shelter anywhere near you? If not, I'd at least be tempted to talk with a local vet and see if he/she would partner with me to spay or neuter whatever I brought in, at a reduced charge or free. Gather up those neglected "pets" and get them fixed, one at a time, especially the females. Chances are their shiftless owners would never know the difference, and they could always look like strays to you. At least that would cut down on the numbers around there, eventually. Sorry, just thinking----

April 03, 2006 - Msg 36475: Thanks to the Good Lord...having car trouble and I thought it was a fuel pump. Which was gonna cost 520 dollars. But is was just a vacuume hose that needed to be reconnected and so I got away with a 180 dollar charge instead. One hundred eighty is still a hard pill to swallow, but I think I will manage. Thanks to our compassionate Lord for making it something I could handle.

Deliverance County! HA, that's a good one, RO, and I only mentioned some of the things that go on around here, like I didn't say that I did some research and found out that there are 5 registered s*x offenders on this block. I really have to watch the kids and make Sean check in alot. You all know about the pitbull down the street, well now there is one next door, only he isn't tied up and roams free. I also didn't tell you about my next door neighbor who is a drug addict and came for help in escaping her abusive spouse. I think I did tell you about the needy family on our street who didn't have enough food or gifts for their kids for Christmas. She is the one I was driving to work for a month but she lost that job because she drinks too much (the reason I was driving her was because she lost her license from drinking and driving). As far as a shelter goes, Ro, there is a pretty good one just down the street and I have taken 7 dogs there within a year (2 were pitbulls). They do try to find good homes for the dogs. As far as the neutering goes, the only local vet is not exactly "giving". Remember he is the one that I took the little mangy dog to and I told him the situation and he still charged me 200.00 to give it a shot and some medicine for the mange. I don't think he would be willing to work out an arrangement to sterilize strays. He charges enormous prices and has built himself a mansion here in town with the profits. I would never take one of my dogs to him. Anyway, I guess I will just keep doing what I can to help the ones I can help. Here's some good news: I went by the house near where the pup was killed yesterday and the other pup was safe and sound with his mother. I did notice, however that the dead pup was STILL lying on the grass beside the road...guess they didn't care enough to bury it. Like you said, "Deliverance County".

Well, enough of this cheerfulness! I should go do something. Left-over Sloppy Joe's for dinner tonight.
