They are very brave and creative and just plain good souls who care about the kids and thank God they are there. You know, we all have certain things that are just very near to our hearts; things we agonize over in prayer and question God about and feel desperate to do something about. I think for Ro its Mongolia, for Mavis it might be the treatment of animals, for Homemaker it is probably the children she teaches. Having young children, and being a Sunday school teacher for 5th and 6th graders, for me it is the children in our great country and what they are exposed to and taught (or not taught) these days. I have attended conferences (like alot of you), read books, studied and agonized about what is happening in this country and I have not shared that with all of you because it can be a very touchy subject because talking about the choices we make for our children hits at the very heart of our self-esteem. We all want to believe that we are doing the best for our kids but I have a burden to encourage parents to spend time really finding out about what goes on in government schools in this country, overall, and praying about what is best for their children...and then being obedient to what God is leading them to do (whatever that is). What homemaker said about our Christian kids being a positive influence in our public school system is sometimes true, of course, but statistics show that the majority of the time the opposite is true. I would like to share something with you: See if you know who this quote is from: "I am afraid that the schools will prove the very gates of h#ll, unless they diligently labor in explaining the Holy Scriptures and engraving them in the hearts of the youth.".....anyone know? It was the great reformer, Martin Luther. There has been some research done recently by a group called the Nehemiah Instltute (you should be able to find it on Google, I think) that show some pretty scary trends. For instance, the majority of children from Christian homes stop attending church within 2 years of graduating from public high school. Over the last forty years, teen suicide has increased by 200%, and since 1970, drug violations are up over 400%. By 1999, 33% of all children were born out-of-wedlock, which represents an increase in the rate of illegitimacy of over 700% since 1941, with the greatest increase after 1960. I want to include a quote from the book I mentioned earlier from Bruce Shortt, "..these results proceed from the values held by individuals. Can anyone really believe that the actions behind these statistics reflect the values of a sincerely held Christian worldview? Do you really believe that attending government schools has no influence on the sort of worldview your child developes?". The worldview taught in government schools today is Secular Humanism or Socialism...there are no moral absolutes. Now, you can call me a fanatic and I AM one when it comes to this issue. We are all fanatic about something, aren't we?
Well, I have taken up too much of your time. I have lots to do today. Take care,

(Teeheehee) Charlotte Tucker, "that guy" was Charlie Ruggles, a long-time, highly respected actor who was indeed in "lots of other shows." His career spanned six decades, and he was one of the better character actors of the time. He almost always played a gentleman-type character, as he got older he was often the grandfather or uncle to a much younger star. You may remember him as the grandfather to the twins in "The Parent Trap." He was also the narrator of the "Aesop's Fables" segment on "Rocky and Bullwinkle." Wonderful actor. Sorry, it just struck me funny, hearing a youngster refer to him as "that guy." I'm quite sure he would have found it amusing, too.
My son and DIL are getting a puppy today. At least that's the plan. I can hardly wait to meet him. He's 12 weeks old, an adorable little ball of black and brown fur. No name yet. I, of course, am suggesting TAGS names, but my DIL likes "royal" names. She's had a Duke and a Baron, so guess we'll see. Whatever his name, he will be loved.
Well, got to get busy around here. This place is a mess, looks like some kind of a nest. I need to have a major clean-up and throw a lot of things out, but I'm such a packrat. Oh, well.
Have a great day, folks. Sugarplum says 10-4! --Romeena

Sorry, Boo, you sorta slipped in while I was writing. So you recognized Charlie Ruggles, too. Surprising, as you're so much younger than I.
You are so right about parents needing to know what is being foisted upon their children in schools. Believe me, it's not just public schools. Our own Baylor University (Baptist) had a big shakeup a few years ago when someone blew the whistle on what one of the religion professors was teaching. You wouldn't believe it! Sure didn't have anything to do with the Bible that I've always read. As parents, we're so diligent about investigating and knowing all about any family that our child might do a sleepover or go on an outing with. Yet we blithely send them off to school every day, with no notion at all of what is being put into their heads. I know, because I did it, too. And guess what? It pays to sit in on your child's Sunday School class now and then. We had a few surprises there over the years, believe it or not. Raising children is just a very hard, hard job, and when I see a 15 yr old girl having a baby because "babies are so cute", it just chills my blood. Usually, the "cute" baby is handed over to the girl's mother before they even leave the hospital. Makes me wonder what's going to happen in another 15-20 years, when that 15 yr old becomes the grandmother. Scary.
Well, enough of that. I think I'll sit here and have a few good laughs, as the squirrels are having a regular circus in the back yard this morning. Incidentally, squirrels are watchful and devoted mothers, careful teachers and strong disciplinarians. I love 'em!

Romeena- I love your comments about the squirrel. Its nice to laugh. Last night my husband and I rented Jeff Foxworth dvd, but it was so crass that we shut it off halfway through.
Boo- I think your absolutely right. That's why I homeschooled for those years. Its sad how the world is changing before our very eyes. Education, politics, and some religions are going to pot very quickly. As parents its our job to make sure that they are brought up right and pray they follow (Deuternonomy).
Alot of people don't know this about me, but I became pregnant out of wedlock. I was 20 so I was able to deal with the situation. We got married, but it was so hard for my parents. My Mom said she failed. I felt so bad for her. I was blessed, but there are people that it doesn't work out for them. Girls just want to be loved and they look to men for that. We have to take care of the girls in this Nation!
I'm making some terryaki and pineapple meatballs with brown rice, steamed veggies, and something for dessert. I'd rather have country fixin's but that's not my diet. A friend challenged me to lose 25 lbs by Memorial Day and she will give me all of her clothes in that size (30 pairs of pants!).

Hi, Lucy. Trust me, if you have a big window for an observation post, and 8-10 squirrels who frequent your yard, you won't need Foxworthy or anybody else. I sit here for hours sometimes, just watching the activity out there. I have three nestboxes in trees for the squirrels, and there's one confirmed litter. I've seen tiny faces peeking out of the entry hole when their mom isn't looking. If she sees them, she dashes to the box and dives in, and I presume she dishes out a lesson, because it will be a couple of days before I see them again. They stay in the box for nearly four months, and are almost grown when they finally emerge. That's why you rarely see a baby squirrel.
I put out feed consistently, so always have a passing parade back there. However, for my own entertainment, I've made some of the feed a little hard to get to. The creativity and agility of the squirrels is just amazing. If you screw some eyebolts into ears of dried corn, and attach the bolts to a bungee cord hung from a tree, you have a built-in circus. It goes like this: Squirrel sees corn, then leap, grab, boing, boing, panic and turn loose, then repeat. Eventually practice overcomes fear, and they ride those ears of corn up and down, gnawing off kernels the whole time. I can change the whole scenario by adjusting the length of the cord. Longer cord, squirrel just rears up and catches the cob in his little claws and pulls it down. He's dangling by his claws, hind feet barely touching the ground, or maybe not touching at all. Lots of gyrations as he dangles there, like a ballet dancer. This morning, one was stretched out fully, feet off the ground by about three inches, when his claws slipped out of the flaky cob, and he landed splat! right on his back. He instantly bounced up, boxed those corncobs with both front paws, then ran out in the yard and turned several flips, then drummed his front feet on the ground. He was one ticked-off squirrel. Embarrassed, I guess. It was absolutely hilarious. I sat here LOL, while the Plum looked at me like I was crazy. Maybe I am, but I don't care, I enjoy life.
Well, gotta run. Hungry birds just flocked in, and I need to put out some seed. Sugarplum says 10-4! --Romeena

HA!HA! That is so funny about the squirrel, RO!! I adore squirrels so you can talk to us about them all day as far as I am concerned. My Dear OL Dad used to come up with the funniest ways to torment squirrels by doing the kinds of things you descibed. One of them payed him back once by jumping off the roof and landing square on top of his head and digging in it's claws to keep from falling off! Ouch! It was hilarious....you might want to wear a hat when you go outside....(just a suggestion. heehee).
Lucy, thanks for sharing your experience with us. I was pregnant when I got married but I was 32! My husband and I dated for 5 years before I would say "I do"...let's just say I said "no" alot but every now and then I had a slip-up! I said all that to say you won't get judged by me. Well, what do you expect, I was a product of the public school system (JUST KIDDING, don't anybody get in an uproar!! hehe). I wouldn't dare blame by lack of self-control on the school I attended). I did struggle with some guilt over it but I know God forgave me and blessed me with a wonderful son. Grace, it's a wonderful thing. I have to tell you that when my husband and I were thinking of names for my son (we didn't know it was a boy but I "knew" somehow), we couldn't decide on a name AT ALL. I hated everything he suggested and vice versa. (I think I have shared this with the others but not with you, Lucy) Anyway, one afternoon while Bruce was at work I came across the name Sean in my baby name book and read that it was the Irish form of the name John and meant, "God is gracious". I loved it and decided I would ask Bruce about it later. Well, Bruce came home that evening and I was fixing dinner in the kitchen. After asking me about the day he (out of the blue) said, "What do you think about the name Sean?"! I was stunned. Anyway, that is how Sean got his name and the meaning was like a message from God to me....He is gracious. Just wanted to share that with you.
Gotta go, St. Susan is here again, MDC.

Wow, Boo, I can just imagine your dad's reaction when the squirrel landed on his head. I've never had one to jump on me, but they are pretty bold, for sure. Once I was walking along the passage between the wall of my sunroom and the side fence, when something hit me on the back of the head. I looked down, and saw a piece of bark lying on the stones, then heard a squirrel barking. There he sat, not four feet from me, on top of the fence. Apparently he had thrown the bark at me. They are bold, destructive, exasperating, cunning, determined, thieving little pests. They are also cute, funny, industrious, hard-working, smart, entertaining little comedians. God made 'em, and I love 'em!
Woohoo! My friend just called me, she got cancelled tonight (yep, another nurse) and we're going to go to my favorite restaurant and eat all the crab legs and boiled shrimp we can hold. It's that buffet I've mentioned before - lots of good Chinese food available too, but when shrimp and crab legs are on the line, I don't pay much attention to anything else. Well, maybe a little hot and sour soup, and a couple of crab Rangoon packets. Also, they make a wonderful crab salad. So, the Caesar salad I had just made went back in the fridge, and I'm off to eat crab legs! Yippee!

I've tried to just create my own little world here in town, and haven't done too shabby a job of it, I guess.
Lucy, there are some critter pictures in the web album, look under "Yard and Wildlife", I think that's the name. Most of the pictures in that album are at least a year old, and the landscaping has matured a lot. The pictures of the fishpond were taken before it was finished - all the rubber liner is now covered with dirt and grass is starting to grow in. Hello All - I just returned to the USA from Canada. Haven't had time to catch up on the postings yet.
I got a question for you all. I just noticed that I had an unopened gallon of skim milk in the refrigerator. Although it has a Feb 27 date stamped on the container, when I opened it, it sure smelled OK. And there are no visible signs of spoilage. Do you think it's OK to drink or should I chuck it?
Once before I opened some sealed milk and drank it even though it was about one week past the expiration date. And not only did it taste great, but I never got sick from it.
But this time, the milk is almost 3 weeks past the expiration date.
Maybe I'll try a little sip. If I survive until tomorrow, then I'll drink more. LOL.

March 19, 2006 - Msg 35920:
Hey, Poor Horatio. Three weeks past date is a bit long, I don't think I'd try it. Actually, those dates are "sell by" dates, and are not the actual date that the product is expected to spoil, so the milk is probably okay. I'm just a little finicky about such things, though, so I probably wouldn't use it.
We have a frog-strangling rain going here. I've pumped the pond out twice, about sixty gallons each time, and now have it going again. This time I'm taking it down very low, will probably pump out a couple of hundred gallons. The pond holds about a thousand gallons, so it can stand to lose that much. Actually, there's a benefit there. I'm pumping out water that has algae in it, and it's being replaced by clean rainwater instead of chlorinated tap water, so the fish should love it, and I don't have to add de-chlorinator. We needed rain so badly, but my goodness - do we have to get it all in ne day??

To Romeena (Msg 35920), thanks for the quick reply. Good point about that date being the "sell by date" and not the "expiration date". I guess keeping it sealed up helped extend the milk's life.

SRM (I can't remember what SRM stands for), these porch friends have been praying for my son for years and we have been so blessed with answers to prayer! We would love the blessing and honor of praying for your son, if you feel comfortable sharing something about him with us.
Mavis, how is your sister doing and when will we know something about the biopsy? Our pastor preached a beautiful sermon today about the goodness of God even in our times of suffering. It seems so unfair when we have to keep going through things but God has the final word and the bible says that someday we will receive our "glorious inheritance" as His children. Life's not fair, but God is good.
Poor Horatio, it pays to be careful. My sister-in-law ended up in the ER last week with food poisoning from some under-done fried chicken. She is the same sis-in-law that is going through an ugly divorce and tried to take too much Xanax a couple of weeks ago, poor thing is having a terrible time.
My mom (who is 80 and has had a stroke in the past) is having surgery again tomorrow. They are connecting some tendons in her left wrist where arthritis has eaten away her cartilage. I would appreciate your prayer for her. Thanks!

Ro, I was just reading back over one of your posts above about the teen girls having babies and handing them over to their mothers. My best friend's daughter just had another baby (the first one is living with its father's family). The father of the first baby went to jail for drug use and robbery and while he was in, she found another guy who is now in jail for breaking probation. She had her second child by him and is now living with this boyfriend's family while he is in jail and his parents stay drunk all the time. the girl can't keep a job because she can't afford a sitter for the baby. The life she is living is a tough one and it seems like there is no hope for her future. She just doesn't seem to be able to see that she is making wrong choices in men. Can any of you shed any light on this for me? Her mom and I just don't know how to help her. I am afraid she will end up with another baby when her boyfriend gets out of jail. She refuses any kind of counseling because I suspect she is afraid that someone will try to get her to leave her boyfriend. Her mother offered to let her live with her but told her the boyfriend was not welome but the girl refused. I guess there is nothing to do but pray for her. She is 18 now and nobody can force her to do anything. It grieves me because I have know her since she was a baby and she is like a neice to me.

MDC, Glad your Mom is doing well.
If I could request a prayer from you all. A fellow in my Church had surgery a couple of weeks ago when they found some cancer in his neck. He is going back in tomorrow for more surgery, is having his juglar vein removed on one side. This sounds real serious to me. He's still a young man and has a family so if you could all think of him in your prayers I'd appreciate. Thanks friends.

I'm picky about those expiration dates too, Horatio. I usually chuck anything that the date has expired on. That being said, I know what you are saying about the milk. We don't go thru too much milk, and I've had the same situation: the expiration date being long past, but it smells ok, and it's never been opened... we've used it and didn't get sick. You can usually tell with milk when it's bad. But that's a good idea, try a little sip and see if you get sick! If we don't see you posting tomorrow, why then we'll know you're in that great porch beyond. "We shall meet, but we shall miss you, there will be, one vacant chair...".
I have no answer for you, Boo, about your friends daughter. How sad. I know people have differing opinions about birth control, but I personally just would wish that young women in that situation would at least use birth control. If they are so determined to be with a wrongun' like that, and insist on hanging out with the wrong crowd, it would be nice if they would have the foresite to try not to get pregnant, so they wouldn't bring a child into that situation. I hope everything turns out ok.
Ro, I'm coming over to your house next weekend to go frog-giggin'.

Good Evenin' Porch,
Its been a busy Preaching Day. My husband had a meeting downtown today, so my son and I went to church this morning, Wendy's for lunch, Toys R Us (my Mom gave him a gift card for his birthday tomorrow), and then Natural Food Warehouse. Later in the afternoon my son's friend came over for some cheesecake and ice cream. I made cupcakes for his school tomorrow! Shew, it has been busy. I still need to cut my coupons out.
Spot- I'm still here, but I go by Lucy Matthews now not Farrah. Tryin' to fit in! I love RC Cola & Moonpies. Hope the race works out for tomorrow.
Boo- I hate to hear about your friend. Maybe something will happen to wake that girl up. We'll just pray.
Poor Horatio- I don't go a week over the sell by date on milk. Good to have ya back though.
Asa- I'll be praying for your Church friend.
MDC- Amen! By the way, what does MDC stand for? Is it TAGS approved?!
Ro- Aren't you in the West? Don't ya need lots of rain?
I'm gonna read a bit of my Homegrown Tomato Series and then hit the hay. I was wondering, besides Floyd and Mayberry Deputy, has anyone been to Mt. Airy, NC?

Good evening to all! Prayers to all who are experiencing life's troubles. It's easy to get wrapped up in our comfortable lives and forget that there are those with terrible troubles.
Here in So. Dak. (I'll write it that way because I've had people think I live in balmy San Diego when I write "SD"!) we are expecting snow tonight and tomorrow. It's been a mild winter compared to some that I've had since moving here, but I guess we're not getting off THAT easy! Thank goodness for snowblowers!
I rearranged my living room today--thank goodness for those "furniture mover" thingys that you put under your furniture to make their move effortless! Still...I'm ready for a calm night on The Porch with a bit of guitar music...and hope Andy doesn't "bark" and fire up the neighborhood dogs! Hahaha!

March 19, 2006 - Msg 35946:
Hey, Deb of Mayberry, do those mover things really work? I've got a couple of pieces of furniture that are extremely heavy, therefore I never vacuum under them, and would like to be able to do so. One thing that comes to mind is my desk! I can get partway under it, but not all the way.
Just watched "March of the Penguins" for the first time, and my goodness! Those poor little things! Now that's cold! Yet they survive. Amazing. One of the most beautifully filmed documentaries I've ever seen, though it did have some very sad moments. Perhaps a bit intense for very small kids, but I'd think 8 and above might handle it okay. Very well done.
Actually, I'm not in Ft. Worth, I'm between Ft. Worth and Dallas, and yes, we needed rain, but this is ridiculous. We've had about eight inches in 24 hours. Lots of flooding, one death, lots of property damage, and I'd have had some damage too, had my landscaper friend not installed the sump pump that drains my back yard. At one point I had about four inches of water back there. Thirty minutes later, all I had was soggy grass. The drains worked. Without that system, I'd have had a sunroom full of water.
Well, gotta get to the ironing board. This next week will be busy, working three 12 hr shifts. I'll be worthless until next Friday evening. You all be good to each other now, and act like somebody. Sugarplum says 10-4! --Romeena

Hi everyone!
Poor Horatio, you must really be poor if you have to drink milk that is 3 weeks old. JK ;)
Yeah, I don't think I would drink it, even if it does smell good on the surface, you never know what is lurking(and growing) on the inside.
Everyone is talking about the public school thing, and I know I have had my issues and reservations about having Kai go to one. I don't much like what I see happening in them. Even in my hometown, I saw "diversity day" being used by opportunistic activists who teach not about different cultures(what the program was supposedly for), but different "lifestyles".
And here in Kai's elementary school where apparently you can't say Christmas and we had to go to Kai's "holiday" concert. It's just ridiculous! I think of sending her to a private school but then sometimes I think, why do WE have to change just to protect our kids from unwanted influences? Don't the schools have an obligation to teach children what the majority of parents want taught, and not what organisations like the aclu want them to teach. Or do parents really want their 5 year olds taught stories about "my two dads", and that things like that are normal and natural, all the while making God a dirty word. I know I don't.
Ok, soapbox going back under the porch.
On a happier note, we went to my parents today, as my brother and his teenage daughter were coming up to go to the annual St. Patrick's Day carnival at our old church, and we hadn't seen them in a while. Kai had a great time, and an even better time playing with my 16 year old niece. I couldn't believe how well those two were hitting it off, just because of their age difference, but they both had a lot of fun. And wouldn't you know it, at the carnival we all went on the cakewalk, and Kai won the first time she played! It is a nice cake too. Looks like a chocolate bunt(I know that spelling is wrong but I just can't think of how they really spell that) cake, with chocolate frosting and sprinkles. It looks real good! We haven't tried it yet, but we probably will tomorrow. You all are welcome to have a slice if you want, but you will have to bring your own milk to wash it down.
Just don't get it from Poor Horatio. ;)

Hey Y'all!
This mornin' I went to the dentist, yuck, but it has to be done and we'll be broke!! Then, I took homemade cupcakes to my son's school for his birthday. The kids kept raving about the cupcakes, so hopefully they'll help Bryson get in good with them. We bought him a bike, because a) he's outgrown his and b) we bought my stepkids theirs for Christmas. Hubby wasn't too thrilled about spending so much, but he's only 8 once and he's having a tough time lately.
Boo- The Homegrown Tomato series is a "southern" type fictional series. There are 3 books. They endure trials and tribulations, but they always depend on their gardening. I like it because its mainly wholesome reading and that's what I go for.
Deb- My FIL lives in Northern Ohio and he said it was a mild winter for them. They only had to use the snowblower once. Although they've gotten dumped on in early April before. I guess I shouldn't say anything else, ha.
Romeena- I have been wanting to see March of the Penguins and you just reminded me! Take care during your long shifts. You too Spot.
Spot- I'll make the cornbread and bring the iced tea!
Sterling- Your comments are right on the money! Its really hard for Bryson because he's 1/5 white children in his class (the school is 60% A.A., 20% hispanic, & 20% asian and white), so they really can't talk about Christmas.
I need to get into the carpool line. Talk to ya tonight!
Blessings to you and yours,

Romeena, yes, those simple little gadgets work like a charm. You just have to be able to tip or lift the furniture a little bit while someone slips the thing under the legs. I can usually just lift and kick it under myself. Such a simple invention...why didn't *I* think of it! When they're in place, even young Opie could move them easily! :o)
We also watched "March of the Penguins" and were amazed! We recently got a big screen hi-definition set and it was amazing. That prompted us to rent more DVD's from Netflix like it. Be sure to check out the documentaries by David Attenborough. He has some incredible ones about birds, undersea life, bugs, etc. You'll LOVE them.

Hit them with your Freedom of Speech right when they say you cant say Christmas etc., ESPECIALLY if all the other stuff is being said!

Yesterday's sermon was on Jesus throwing over the merchants tables in the temple area. Not exactly a "peace and love" moment as many will try to tell you he is ALL about. He IS about that, but He also said that HOLY anger is a good thing, like when Moses threw down the tablets. Holy anger stirs people into doing what is right. How many of those money changers do you think set their tables right back up again and continued? I bet none. They probably said this guy means business! Romeena, sounds like a bad week having to work that much. Don't over do it. You know if you throw your back out it won't be any good to anyone.
Me and the wife are headed off to Southern California next week for some sun and surf and to visit family. Will go visit the quintuplets for a day. Can't imagine they are 4 already. And I will be sure to stay away from Denny's. My goodness, the one in Pismo Beach is scary cause we are staying there for a few days, not that I'd go to Dennys though. Just not my favorite.
