We had some twisters in our neck of the woods last night - some awful big hail, too. The damage to property missed us by only about a quarter mile, although it took out the main feeder to our neighborhood and we were out of power for about 19.5 hours. My daughter was so happy to get the power on (momma too). Hope everyone else who got the storms didn't get much and that the storms go easy on your area, spot.

March 13, 2006 - Msg 35680: Hey to MAVIS! I know what you mean about poodles & coocker spaniels. I worked in the San Diego Animal Shelter system for 5 years. Chihuahuas are nasty unless well socialized too. Of course that could go for any animal! You know Coocker Spaniels are the #1 reported biters of children statistically? In the shelters I'd say I was more fearful of Rotties than Pit Bulls. Rotties just give you a slow look and then explode. After the first bite, and the owner's idiotic reaction, I'd have handed her the clippers and told her to finish him herself. Her reaction is the operative part here. Biting dogs are a natural hazard in your profession. You deal with it, I'm sure, but then only up to a reasonable point. Stupid owners are disposable, every time. Drop her name in the trash can. You did the right thing. I can't imagine the Plum ever doing such a thing, but if she did, she would have never heard your scolding, because I'd have been in her face big time myself.

Well, to bed for me. Gotta attend a really dumb recertification class tomorrow. Neonatal resuscitation! As though, if I were to walk into a patient's room and find a crashing baby, I'm going to stand there in that room and try to resuscitate that kid myself, armed with a bulb syringe and nothing else?? I think not. I would be flying down the hall with the baby in the little rolling crib, yelling for someone to alert the nursery and open doors for me! From our most distant room to the fully-equipped special care nursery - twenty seconds, tops. Once there, highly trained neonatal specialists would take over (there's always at least one in the call room) and the baby would have a chance. So why do I need to know about neonatal resuscitation? Most of what they teach in that class would be illegal for me to perform in the first place, such as intubating the baby. I don't understand it, but it's a paper requirement, so I'll do it. At least I get paid for the day.

March 13, 2006 - Msg 35685: Ro, it so funny that you mentioned that Neonatal Resuscitation. I had not thought of it since I quit the labor unit several years ago but the subject came up a couple of days ago when I was talking to a nurse friend of mine who wants to do ACLS. I was telling her how silly it was that they would teach us to intubate when we couldn't even do it by law. I'm glad I am through with all that (for right now, anyways).

MAVIS, that makes me SO mad! I have to tell you I just can't understand the response of that pet owner. I remember years ago my mother-in-law had a dog that bit one of her grandkids and it was unprovoked. My father-in-law went right out, loaded up the dog and took it out and shot it. He would not abide a dog who would attack a child without provocation. I know his reaction was very extreme but at least he took care of things. Now, as a nurse I want to tell you to go get a Tet@nus booster (especially if you have not had one within the last 5 years).

Did any of you happen to watch the new show tonight on ABC called Medical Miracles? It was really interesting. They helped a young woman with severe Tourette Syndrome (which is what my son has). She had suffered terribly for 11 years and nothing helped her. She was without hope. She couldn't drive a car, go to college or go on with life because of the terrible tics. She was even hitting herself in the head. It was heartbreaking to watch. They did brain surgery on her and planted 2 electrodes deep within her brain that sent electrical impulses to the small area responsible for the Tourette symptoms. Within seconds, she was completely symptom free. It was absolutely amazing. They have only done the surgery on about a dozen people worldwide, and only those with severe symptoms but it is, basically a cure, even though the surgery has potential severe risks. It would certainly be worth it for people like the young woman in the show tonight. It was very touching and comforting to know that if my son should get worse later, there is hope.

I could, and have, needed that and have done it, many times. But the neonatal thing is just a waste of time. I'm not about to stand there like a ninny with a crashing baby, like it was all up to me, because it's not, thank the good Lord. There is very expert help just a few yards away.

March 14, 2006 - Msg 35688: Good morning everyone. Busy, busy, busy over in this neck of the woods. So busy, in fact, that I haven't had time to go back and read the archives. My you people have been chatty over the last several days! But I did have the chance to read the recent posts.

ROMEENA: My wife feels the same about most of her recertification classes, especially the ones that cut into her sleep time.

MAVIS: That's a shame about that dog. But your right about not judging all dogs by the breed. In fact, our Sugar was a coc-ker spaniel (she was only about 19 lbs. at her healthiest). She died last year at age fifteen. I've had other dogs, but have never known a more even-tempered one in my life. I never saw her snap, even at little kids. She loved to play by running around, but never chewed anything. She obviously loved our family and even in her old age was willing to cheerfully tolerate being dressed in silly hats by our daughter. You just never know.

Tonight TV Land is showing what I believe is the last black & white TAGS. Do you think "Banjo-Playing Deputy" was a test to see if Jerry Van Dyke would be a good replacement for Don Knotts? Too bad they didn't go with him; IMHO he was better than Warren...of course, Jack Burns was put in an impossible situation. No one could replace ol' Barn.

RO, you have had to do CPR many times?! Wow, I have been a nurse since 1983 and only had to do CPR one time (I did have to help in neonatal cpr a couple of times, though). I guess because I worked mostly in Labor unit and very few women ever expired in our unit. It was a very busy one but mostly women who had good prenatal care.

Hi Lucy Matthews, thanks for asking about Sean (my 10 yr old son). I didn't really get any ideas from the show, but some encouragement. Sean is not considered to have a severe case of Tourette's but is on the severe end at times and has full body tics. He doesn't say the bad words, which is a huge relief since he attends Christian school, ha. He has had tics in the past that include him hurting himself, though, and alot of head jerking and leg jerking, etc. I could really relate with the girl's dad on the show last night. As I listened to him I could relate to everything he was saying and just cried right along with him. Its a hard thing to go through with a child but its not the worst. So many parents go through so much worse, bless them!
Anyway, I hope that Sean's tics will go away entirely or get better as he gets older (many do) but just in case he is one of the ones that get worse, it is good to know there is help available.

It is absolutely gorgeous here in South Texas today! Too cool for the beach but just beautiful. The trees are starting to sprout their bright green leaves and the buttercups are blooming. Hope you folks with snow get some relief soon.

Say, I just wanted to let you all know that the time for my mom's homecoming in heaven may be sooner than later now. Experienced hospice helpers have said about two weeks, but then who knows for sure. I would appreciate prayers for her and for my family, siblings etc. Thanks.

I was there just over a year ago, and although the last thing in the world I wanted was for my Dad to pass away, I just knew he was not enjoying life anymore and was tired of a failing body. When the time came, hard as it was to say goodbye, it was very peaceful for him and the rest of us. Just the same, my prayers go with you and your family.

Thanks for all the congrats on Mariah. They are sending Mom and Daughter home today. That makes everyone happy I'm sure. I think my wife is planning to stay with my Daughter and Husband for a few days to help out. They only live 6 miles from us, but I'm sure the help will be appreciated. Good thing Spot is here to cook for me, cause when it comes to cooking, I'm inept. I have the eatin part down good, but cookin is just something I have never had to do. Was blessed with a great Mom, and then a great wife and both have let me know the kitchen was their domain. I can burn some steaks on the q if needed.

Lucy (sounds like you have picked a name and I like it) you are right about Ben Sewell and Rafe Hollister being played by the same actor. Jack Prince is his real name I believe. And as MDC stated, that was done with a few different actors and actresses in the show. Big Maude Tyler was also Elenora Poltrice (Barney's voice teacher). Another one of the female convicts (Naomi) was also Daphne, one of the fungirls. The one I didn't know till just here lately was the lady who played Annabelle Silby (the lady collecting for the under privlidged childrens charity drive) was also the feamle shoplifter who clanked....that ended her up in the clink! There were more, but my mind is blank right now.

Well just as our snow is about to melt off here today, another storm is expected to be here tonight with.... you guessed it, more snow! I guess I'll really enjoy spring when and if it ever gets here.

Romeena, I know how you feel with the class your talking about. In my line of work you need certificates for everything anymore. And they have to be renewed every year or so. A lot of the things I have certificates for I have never used in real life situations. Go figure huh?

I sure would appreciate your prayers for my grandma. She's 92 and is in the hospital for bronchitis and low blood oxygen. It looks like it may be time for my dad and his brothers to get her into some assisted living situation of some sort. She's pretty independent and I know it will be tough on her, but she's getting a little more "not herself" every day.

Do you believe it's been that long? I miss her more today than I did before. Got a birthday coming this week & I will miss that morning phone call from her. The last 10 years had turned into kind of a game between us, to see which one would call the other one first. I would call her & tell her "Happy Labor Day!" because every birthday for as long as I can remember, she told me she was in labor with me for over 33 hours. I miss that phone call tag game so much! Think when I wake up Thurs morning, I'll just tell her Happy Labor Day.
Ro what kind of cookie do you want, cause you won that bet, I keep my tet. shot up to date, still got 2 years on this one & 3 years on my rabies shot. My thumb is so sore today, just touching it sends pain thru my whole hand. Off to surf the web.

March 14, 2006 - Msg 35716: Good evening, everyone! Well, here's one for the books. Since the Plum has been known to nab the mail and shred it, I have asked the realtor who manages my rent houses not to drop the envelope with the rent checks in it all the way through the mail slot, but rather to just put them partway through where Plum can't reach it. Today he did just that, and the mailman came along and picked it up, thinking it was outgoing mail! I figured out what had happened when I called the realtor and he told me he had left the checks, but I didn't find them. So, at ten minutes to closing time, I walked into our post office substation and asked to see the supervisor. Told her what had happened, she said she'd be right back. Ten minutes later, she walked out with the envelope in her hand and gave it to me, no problem. All that was on the envelope was my name. She had asked me my address, so she knew what carrier would have brought it in, and I guess the incoming mail hadn't been processed yet, so she was able to find it. Now how's that for service? It may be snail mail, but the personal touch is still there. Sure saved me a bushel of trouble, maybe even a couple of rubber checks.

Blessings on all of you with the responsibility for aging, infirm and dependent parents. My heart goes out to you. I've been there, and it's not a very good place to be. Just know that when they have gone from this world, you will find a lot of comfort in the knowledge that you served them faithfully and cared for them gently.

March 14, 2006 - Msg 35717: Hi Asa, yes, my son developed TS about 4 years ago. We think he inherited it from my mom. She said when she was a child she had similar symptoms but outgrew them. We are sure hoping he will too. The Lord knows best. Its like Sean said earlier today when we were having dinner; He asked me, "Mom, do you know what I think is most important in life?". I said, "Tell me what you think is most important," and he replied, "God and then my family." I asked him, "Why do you think you feel that way?" and he said, "Because I belong to God.". I really believe that so I try not to worry about the future. I don't think my son would be the caring, courageous person he is today if he had not gone through what he has had to endure. The Lord be praised. (thanks for your prayers!)

Wasted 2 hours of my evening watching American Idol tonight. I used to be a big fan of the show but its just not what it used to be and so many darned commercials! I think my favorite singer on the show is Taylor Hicks, he's real unique.

MAVIS, I have wondered about something. If Rabies vaccines are available for people like vets and dog groomers, do you know why aren't they given to everyone? I know that quite a few kids still die from rabies each year in this country. Do the vaccines has the potential for very serious side effects? I read that cats spread far more rabies to humans than any other animal (in this country, anyway). That was surprising to me. I guess its because most laws don't require cats to be vaccinated and they run free more often than dogs. I also learned that you can get rabies from being sprayed by a skunk that is infected with rabies, if the spray gets in the eyes, nose or mouth. Interesting, isn't it?

Well, I think I will turn in early tonight and try to get a decent night's sleep. I've been having trouble sleeping lately, restless and wake up an hour before the alarm clock goes off! I hate that! Good night,

Never a pleasant experience. Now my next recert is CPR, due in July. We also do it every two years now, instead of yearly. (hooray)

I worked 12 years in Med/surg, then for 5 years I floated the entire house, never knew where I was going to be until I got to work and checked the board. Could be anything from ER to ICU to nursery. That's what I was doing when my husband died, and I decided I wanted to go to a relatively pleasant place - thus postpartum. When I was floating, my life was never, ever dull. It was always busy wherever I went - they were shorthanded or I wouldn't have been sent there! Sometimes I didn't get assigned to a unit, just got a beeper and literally floated the entire house for the whole shift. Started IVs, put in catheters, admitted patients, helped docs with procedures, dropped NG tubes and feeding tubes, did major dressing changes - whatever needed to be done that would have taken a chunk out of the floor nurse's time. Also, naturally, I responded to code calls. I really enjoyed those shifts, never a dull moment. But, all things change eventually, and when my husband died, I just didn't have the heart for the excitement and drama anymore, so have been on postpartum for almost ten years now. --Romeena
March 14, 2006 - Msg 35723: Boo guess one reason they don't offer the rabies vax to the public at large is because, even tho we hear about people getting rabies, statistically, the number of folks that actually get it is very minimal. And, the vaccine is pretty expensive, the bottle looks as if it has about 5cc's of vax & a vax is 1cc, the bottle is over $60.00. Health dept. & dr's recommend that people who work with animals get vaccinated, so we all usually get together to make it cheaper. You're first time you get 3 vax, 1, another 1 week later in the other arm, & the last 2 weeks later in the first arm again, boosters are 1 shot every 5 years. And let me tell you, it HURTS! makes your arm sore for about a week.
I'm not BArney or Rafe, I take my shot when the County nurse asks me.

She got us back, though by putting dirt in our cap pistols. I had some GI Joes in the late 60s and early 70s. Sure wish I had saved them for my son. The only "action figures" you can find now are little, muscle-bound monster-type things. Not like our old fully-posable Joes with the "Kung Fu grip!" I'd buy my son some of the old ones but have you seen the prices on E-Bay? They weren't made of gold!

I'm glad I don't have to get those shots, MAVIS. Ouch!

March 15, 2006 - Msg 35729: Good for you, DIXIE. WE can always use more good history teachers. I was a history major myself and intended to get my teacher certification but never did. Ended up in the history field, though. It takes a special kind of person to teach, and not everyone can or should. Some of my friends who are history teachers are having a hard time of it now. Besides the general problems of our educational system, the No Child Left Behind testing pretty much ignore history for language, science and math (all important of course) so that's where the schools are putting the money. Some schools are starting to drop certain history courses or not hire new teachers. It's terrible. Don't let that discourage you, though. There's still lots of opportunity and much work to do!

Thank you for the responses about Jack Prince. Another actress played both Rose (ep.1 housekeeper) and Aunt Bee's friend in the gossip episode. There was also a man with blonde hair that played different characters, but was always on the bad side. I cannot think of his name. Anyhoo, it was really nice they did that. It gave actors a chance to show their diversity.
I just wanted to say a quick "hey" to everyone on the porch. I have to get my biscuits and homemade dressings made, fold some laundry, and run some errands before I pick up my son from school. I'm disappointed that I have to return my TAGS dvd's to the library today. I have got to buy some for myself. This last time I got Hee Haw too for my son to see and he loved it! He thought it was a hoot. I'm a country girl, but he's raised a city boy.

AFD: No, the Mrs. has moved on from teh healthy to Cadbury Mini-Eggs. Really, she has lost her cravings, but they are her favorite candy and only available this time of year. Usually, I get her 6-8 big bags of them for Easter which she puts in the freezer and rations out for herself for the rest of the year. This year, she's out of control! She's been getting the little bags. I have been finding "evidence" (trash) in her car and work bag and tease her about it. If this keeps up, the baby may come out choclate with a candy shell. How are you doing anyway?

March 15, 2006 - Msg 35740: Good afternoon, everyone. Yep, Alan Melvin played a lot of parts on TAGS. He also played two different roles on the Dick Van Dyke show - he was Rob's army buddy when Rob and Laura first got married, (seen in flashbacks), and he played an old friend of Rob's later on, who was a jeweler and Rob thought he was a jewel thief. He was also Sgt. Carter's rival on "Gomer Pyle, USMC". Very versatile actor, can play anything from comedy to gangsters.

Lucy, what a perceptive view you have offered, regarding the repeated use of the same actors in various roles. I never thought of it like that - the idea of it giving the actors a chance to really showcase their talents. Thanks for sharing that insight.

MDC, I'm loving that memory foam bed. Took a little getting used to - the first couple of nights I wasn't so sure, but now I'd fight anyone who tried to take it away. Extremely comfortable.

My pear tree is bursting into bloom. Pity I won't get any pears, but my little squirrel friends will swipe them all as soon as they get anywhere near ripe. Who cares? I can buy pears at the store, and the squirrels can't, so they're welcome to them.

Well, it's been a long day. Funeral for my friend's husband this morning, then several of us provided lunch for the family, back at the church after the burial, and I just got home. Absolutely beautiful service, made possible by the fact that Johnny had accepted Christ about five years ago. Had he not done that, today would have been a very miserable day for his family. Instead, they were able to celebrate his home-going with joyful, though grieving, hearts. Yes, you can grieve and be joyful at the same time. God is good.

This may seem weird, but the one episode I was really glad to see ole Allen Melvin "get it" was went he wanted to fight Barney, but Andy subst-ituted the Jackie Chan look-a-like in the ole salt and pepper! Judo, karate or whatever it was. Allan looked so defeated at the end when Barney does come up to him!
Good to hear that the bed is working out. It is a big investment, like when we got the select comfort bed, it took me a while to find the right "sleep number", but once i did, no more morning backache!

I only worked med-surg and ICU for a year, and then some home health before starting in the Labor unit. My most memorable experiences were the time I worked ICU back in 1983-84. I had a busy day today with all the chores. I tackled my daughter's room and did ALOT of work cleaning and sorting, getting rid of clothes she can't wear and toys she never plays with. I organized everything in containers to make it easier for her to keep the room clean. We have been making her straighten her room every evening because she is so messy (like most 4 yr olds) and when her daddy tells her to do it she sneaks over to me and whispers in my ear (so daddy won't hear), "Will you help me clean my room?". I decided I should organize things to make it possible for her to do it alone. She is always so proud of herself if she does.

Well, my break is over. I will try to stop by again later.

Welcome, Debbie. I heard a name tonight that no one has used - Lila Sims. She and her husband were considering buying Andy's house, remember? Actually, she was Miss Rosemary when we first saw her, but apparently she changed her name to Lila and married Mr. Sims. (teehee)

Well, if this don't just beat all! About thirty years ago, I planted three wisteria vines on a chainlink fence that ran across part of my back yard at that time. The things grew like mad, vines everywhere, but never one bloom. They had blooms when I bought them, but once planted, they never bloomed again. After about ten years, we took that fence down, chopped down the vines and just kept mowing when they tried to come back up. They did come up behind our wooden fence, and as near as I can tell, traveled and reappeared all over the neighborhood, just vines, no blooms. Well, this afternoon, I looked up at the top of a tree that grows just behind my back fence, and guess what is gracing the whole top of that tree? Yep, wisteria blooms! Gorgeous purple clusters, just crowning the whole tree. Now why couldn't the miserable thing have done that when it was supposed to? Why is it blooming now, thirty years later? Go figure.

Oh, about the rabies vax. I can testify to what Mavis said about the pain. I was bitten by a rabid dog when I was about eleven, and ended up having to have the entire rabies series. It is extremely painful. At that time, it was a series of fourteen injections, all given into the abdominal muscles, one a day for two weeks. The very first one was painful, and they got progressively worse. The last few were excruciating. Of course, those were treatment, not vaccine, so were probably really potent. Of course, this was over fifty years ago, so maybe things have improved a little, too, I wouldn't know. Don't care to experiment to find out, either.

March 15, 2006 - Msg 35766: Romeena, I remember a few years ago we had the discussuon about Jack Prince singing and someone (can't remember who) said they had a recording of his. It would probably take a long time to look back through the archives for it, though, and I don't remember if the name of the recording was ever said? Or maybe I don't remember ANY of it right (that is a possibility). Gosh, how horrible that you were bitten by a rabid dog! Your parents must have been beside themselves, how horrible that you had to go through that. I had a friend in grade school who had to go through the series of shots, too. I was terrified of the possibility when I was younger and stayed far away from stray dogs and cats. My mom put the fear in my (about alot of things...like childbirth, marriage, earthquakes, ghosts, death and being burried alive, vampires, Rosemary's baby...the list goes on and on. She was kind of flaky back then).

Lucy, I think Dr. Phil is right (and is most of the time). I just love that 'ol Texas boy!
