Morning dears.
Mercy sakes Boo, I got tuckered out just reading about all you did yesterday, never mind actually doing it. You poor dear, you better pace yourself.
Well it's Saturday. Y'all got any big plans for today? We are expecting our first grandbaby any time so things are exciting here. Everytime the phone rings my wife charges it like a bull chasing a red flag. You don't want to be in her way.
Sorry Mavis, I misread your post. I didn't know it was the newspaper that was doing that. I hope they spelled your name right this time. Didn't they call you Mavis Ness that last time?
Well best get off to Home Depot before they get to crowded. I need some new screws for my gun. They have genuine brass screws there I think I'll get this time. I feel slighted though Romeena. They don't have no hotdog vendors at our Home Depots. Wasn't it you mentioning those? Probably just as well though. I'm doing another floor show tonight at Yancey and I don't need the extra insulation. Oh my, the sacrifices I make for my adoring fans!:)

Ro, You've been to the Mission drive-in, how neat! I don't know about the tuna sandwiches but I will definitely have the kids in pj's with pillows and blankets and will be sure to take along some Pepsi in your dear husband's honor and I will have you in mind while I'm drinking it. I'm glad Sterling reminded me to take along some mosquito spray, just in case. I found a site for the Mission drive-in you can pull up on Google if you want.
Sterling, I believe the last movie I saw at a drive-in was either Airplane or Dawn of The Dead (remember those?).
Well ASA, I have another busy day today but in a different way. Lots of company and a wedding to go to tonight. I somehow have to find time to go buy a gift for the bride and groom. Mercy, I shouldn't have stayed out so late with Mavis and Hazel last night but it was Friday night and all and "they are good dancers", as Barney would say.
Prayers for a safe delivery of your grandbaby, ASA, and thanks for the sacrifices you make for your adoring fans. We do adore you.
Yep, our Hazel is a card, Mavis. She is blessed with humor!
Better go do something before people start showing up around here. I thought I would be able to sleep in but I woke up at stinking 6:40am and couldn't go back to sleep. Might be a long day,
Boo

Hey, Ro & Boo. I have a friend who used to manage the Mission Drive-In many years ago. I worked for that company (Santikos Theatres) for several years myownself. I've been out of the bizness for years and wasn't even aware that the Mission had re-opened. I think that's just fine as a daisy! I wish more drive-ins would re-open, but don't make them so modern! Just like bowling alleys - I miss keeping score with a pencil and score paper and I miss those overhead light thingies.
Speaking of things not like they used to be, anyone here who's been to one of the old Krystal burgers knows the set-up. (I used to frequent a couple in Jackson, MS, when I lived there - one on Ellis Ave. and the first one in Jackson, on Capitol St.) The grills are in the center of the place and you can watch them make those wonderful little gut bombs up close and personal. Well! One opened here in San Antonio across from Ingram Park Mall a few weeks ago and I went yesterday. Sterile. Just plain old sterile. Couldn't even smell the onions when you walked in the door. Dumb ol' 21st Century...
Ro, was wondering if you heard the legendary restaurant, Earl Abel's, is closing its doors on the 15th. Isn't that sad? They had the best fried chicken and cakes in this city. RIP, Earl Abel's - 1933-2006.

I remember going to drive-in movies when I was a kid, too. Mom & dad would load us 3 kids into the car and mom would have a huge brown paper sack full of popcorn. She'd have an ice chest of pop for us, and boy it was fun. As a teenager I went quite a few times with friends, too. I didn't ever see much bad stuff in the bathrooms, but I did once catch a glimpse of something going on in the car next to ours that shocked me quite a bit! (I'm still in therapy). Hey, De§! Good to see you - you stay away much too long at a time, you know that? Earl Abel's is closing?? Oh no!! A landmark, if there ever was one. As I recall, they were the first restaurant to serve what later became Kentucky Fried Chicken. Remember all the funny signs posted around the dining room, little quippy things. I remember one - "Eating good food keeps one able. Eating here keeps Earl Abel." Then there was "Seevilly, dair dago. Tousinbuses inarow. Nojo, demstrux, summit cowsin summit dux." Translation - "See, Willy, there they go. A thousand buses in a row. No, Joe, them's trucks. Some with cows, and some with ducks." Hey, don't blame me. I didn't write it, I just read it about a jillion times when I was a kid. My dad loved to eat at Earl Abel's.
Yep, I hate it too, when they try to "upgrade" something that has become an icon. It never works. Like I said yesterday about Karam's. The old ramshackle restaurant on Zarzamora street had great food. The new one out along US 10 just wasn't the same, and was a lot more expensive.
Does anyone know if the roller-skating rink on St. Mary's Street is still there? My best friend and I spent many a fun evening at that rink, zipping around to the live organ music and scoping out the cute guys. We thought we were so cool in our little short skating outfits. My mom even had a pair of black skater's shorts - kind of like a brief, only made of broadcloth - made for me, to wear under my short skirts. They fit like a glove, had a zipper so I could get them on. I found them in a cedar chest a year or so ago - still look great. Could I get them on? Oh, hahahahahaha!!
Wow, one of my azaleas is blooming! Several irises are sporting fat little buds, will be opening soon. Mama squirrels are hauling all sorts of trash into the squirrel boxes, so we should be having blessed events soon. Such fun!
Speaking of blessed events, Asa, you'd better let us know immediately, if not sooner, when you become a grandpa. I think that's just wonderful. Now don't you go filling that baby's head with all your nonsense, you hear?

Mavis, I'll get some baby squirrel pictures if I can - would just love to have some. However, the babies stay hidden in the nest box until they're about 3 1/2 to 4 months old. By then, they don't look much different from adult squirrels, just a little smaller.
My goodness! I put corn gluten meal on the yard about a week ago, and I wish you could see it! It is the most beautiful emerald green you ever did see! That stuff is wonderful. It will keep summer weed seeds from germinating, and makes everything green at the same time. Fully organic, too, doesn't hurt anything or anybody, except for the weeds. I love doing everything the organic way, but I sure do wish somebody would come up with a really effective organic control for fire ants. Miserable things. I've tried orange oil, but it didn't really work. If anybody comes up with a real solution, I hope you'll let me know.

Hey, Dixie! Congratulations! Rest assured, we figured you were working and studying hard. Just drop by when you can, we're glad to see you anytime.
Friends, thank you for praying for my friend Johnny. I learned this afternoon that he went to be with the Lord this morning at 10:15. He (and we) knew it was coming, and he was ready. His illness has been long and draining, and very hard on his wife. He was a very large man, and almost unable to do anything for himself, barely able to transfer to a wheelchair. He was prone to try to get up and walk about at night, and fell almost every night, necessitating a call to the EMTs, just to get him back in bed. He couldn't get up from the floor, even with his wife's help. So, she had taken to sleeping on the floor next to his bed, so he couldn't get up without awakening her. Not a very pleasant existence for either of them. Now he's beyond all that, and his wife can begin the process of regaining her strength and building a life for herself. She deserves it.
ky girl, be sure you buy corn gluten meal for your yard, not horticultural cornmeal. There's a difference, and the one that has the weed-killing properties is the corn gluten meal. Horticultural cornmeal goes on a bit later, and is beneficial in discouraging fungal diseases on roses, crape myrtle and anything else that gets sick easily. Another good organic product is dry molasses, which I put on about a month ago, and I'm sure is playing a part in the greening of my lawn. Organic gardening is fun and very rewarding, but there's so much to learn. I'm still pretty clueless, but I'm working on it.
Have a wonderful Sabbath, friends. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Romeena, sorry to hear about your friend Johnny, but like you described, he was probably ready and though I'm sure his wife will miss him, I know how hard that has been on her to tend to him like that. My prayers are with her.
Good to hear from you Dixie. Glad things are going well.
Hazel, was that you window peeking at the drive-inn years ago? I was in that car, and the next morning I went to the Sheriffs office to report a peeping Tomette and there's this lady sitting there who looked a little familiar, but I couldn't tell for sure cause she slipped one of them nose, moustache, eyeglasses contraptions on and walked out real fast. Now it's all starting to add up!
Romenna, I'd be really interested in knowing more about your organic gardening knowledge. If I could find organic stuff to put on my grass instead of the chemicals I use know, that would be great. I had never heard about that gluten corn meal. Is it readily available? We have a farm store just down the street fron us. I'll have to check them out. I'd like to know how to apply, you know, like how much and does it have to be watered in good, stuff like that. Any advice you could give me I'd love to hear from you. I think Hazel does organic gardening also if I remember correct. Have you ever heard of Jerry Baker? He is a national master gardener and he comes up with some odd mixtures for sprays and what not. Stuff like mixing beer with chewing tobacco and crazy things like that.
Have fun at work Shazam.
Poor Horatio, you didn't see Otis Campbell driving by when you were up there in Canada did you? We have reason to believe there's a still up there he is visiting. We got this information using the latest in phsycological investigative analysis. It's amazing the things you can learn about from a 15 cent magazine.

Asa, what I know about organic gardening wouldn't fill a paragraph, and what I don't know would fill volumes. About all I can tell you about corn gluten meal is that now is the time to spread it - a bit late down here but probably about right where you are - and you should be able to get it at any good garden center. It's not expensive, and directions for spreading it are on the bag. Dry molasses - same story. Both are environmentally safe, and unless you just pour it on, it would be hard to get too much. It won't burn like chemical fertilizers.
I love the dry molasses. After it's been spread, my yard smells like the feed and tack room when I was a kid. The "sweet feed" contains dry molasses. Oh, my. I used to love to go in that room. The fragrance was wonderful. Alfalfa hay, coastal hay, sweet feed, leather saddles - what a blend! Sometimes when you'd walk in, your nose would tell you there was a mouse or rat in there. That's when my dad would shut our cat, Jose, up in there for the night, and by morning, the cat was well fed and proud of himself, and the rat smell was gone.
Well, time to head for church. Have a blessed day, everyone. Sugarplum says 10-4! --Romeena

Howdy from Texas. Its a warm, humid 85 degrees here in spring break land. Lots of tourists here on the coast. You couldn't get me near the beach this weekend. The things that go on down there!
Just finished feeding lunch to the family (roast and taters) and needed to chill out a bit. My brother Jerry just left for California and I had my little cry and tried to comfort my dad. Imagine being 80 years old and having 2 of your children so far away. Sometimes its several years between times he sees Jerry. You know he must be thinking he may not see him again. I can't imagine how painful that must be. Jerry is a good guy but he is a workaholic and doesn't seem real interested in the rest of his family most of the time. Too bad, I think he will regret it one day.
Well, break time is over. Got to go clean the kitchen. I got to take care of babies in the church nursery this morning. They were so sweet. There is this little, chubby cherub named Claire that is proably the cutest baby I have ever seen (besides Laci, of course)! I had alot of fun squeezing those little fat legs. She's such a doll! Mavis, I didn't think the article was bad at all. A little one-sided, perhaps, and that probably would have been remedied if the reporter had witnessed more than one grooming. Of course, I'm a pet mom who knows all about the theatrics that the little drama queens and kings can present. I think the reporter needed to spend a bit more time, and the article needed to be a little longer in order to present a more balanced picture. Still, all in all, not bad. Good picture of you!
Oh, Asa! More snow? You poor thing. I just can't imagine. It's mid-80s here today, bright sunshine and warm winds, green grass and colorful flowers everywhere, many of them sporting little "flying blossoms", as the butterflies are coming through. I love it!

Morning porchters.
Well at 9:18 MST last night I became a grandpa. Little Mariah Mcdonald came in at 6lbs.7oz and 18" long. Gosh what a tiny sweet little thing. Held her for a while and observed all her perfect little fingers and toes, her cute little tongue as she'd stick it out when she fussed, and her black curly hair. I don't think I've ever seen a living doll this cute since her Mom was born to us 22 years ago. But I am somewhat prejudice I'm sure. God has blessed us dearly. If I can figure out how to do it, I'll get some pics of her sent off to Romeena. Thanks for your prayers.

I thought this summed up our porch pretty well - thanks to Floyd, we all have a "bell" to hear.
Just up the road from my home is a field, with two horses in it. From a distance, each looks like every other horse. But if you stop your car, or are walking by, you will notice something quite amazing. Looking into the eyes of one horse will disclose that he is blind. His owner has chosen not to have him put down, but has made a good home for him. This alone is amazing.
If nearby and listening, you will hear the sound of a bell. Looking around for the source of the sound, you will see that it comes from the smaller horse in the field. Attached to her bridle is a small bell. It lets her blind friend know where she is, so he can follow her.
As you stand and watch these two friends, you'll see how she is always checking on him, and that he will listen for her bell and then slowly walk to where she is, trusting that she will not lead him astray. When she returns to the shelter of the barn each evening, she stops occasionally and looks back, making sure her friend isn't too far behind to hear the bell.
Like the owners of these two horses, God does not throw us away just because we are not perfect or because we have problems or challenges. He watches over us and even brings others into our lives to help us when we are in need.
Sometimes we are the blind horse being guided by the little ringing bell of those who God places in our lives. Other times we are the guide horse, helping others see.
Good friends are like this. You don't always see them, but you know they are always there. Please listen for my bell and I'll try to remember to listen for yours.

Hey, all. Did you know that hard work, or more specifically, the ability to do it, is a blessing? I do believe that, and trust me, right now I'm feeling pretty blessed! Got two more flats of bedding plants in the ground. They sure will be pretty in a couple of weeks. Tomorrow I have to do the hard part, though. I have to get my budnippers and nip the buds. I just hate doing that. Lovely little petunias, big bright blooms on each one, and I have to go nip them off! I'd nip 'em before planting, but I need the blooms so I can see what I'm planting where, color-wise. My garden center friend, and his brother, my landscaper friend, both tell me to prune new plants, and they're right. If you don't, they'll just get long and stringy, with one little flower out on the end of the shoot. If you do, they'll bush out and make a beautiful ball of blossoms, about a foot or more in diameter. So pretty. I've also learned not to pull up plants in the fall or winter that appear to be dead. Just cut them off about an inch above the ground, and half or more will rejuvenate in the spring. I've got snapdragons just bursting with buds that I did not plant this year. Some of them are two years old or more! Isn't that neat? Ah, the rewards of gardening!
Well, guess I'll go heat up some leftovers. Fortunately, I like leftovers, and generally have some good ones, because I plan for them. Right now, I've got half of a big old ribeye steak, which I'll slice thinly, heat a bag of Ready Rice and stir the steak into the hot rice and voila! A good meal! It helps that I'm not a picky eater - I'll eat just about anything, but steak and rice doesn't qualify as "anything". It's just plain good! Almost as good as the pounded steak out at Morelli's.
Sugarplum says 10-4! --Romeena

Hey Romeena,
After reading some of your Mongolian accounts, I do believe you will eat just about anything! I like to make lots of potato salad, because that is good to round out meals, and they taste mighty good as "leftovers". There's a few other things I like to make "in bulk", because then all you need is to cook up some chicken, or make hamburgers, and you have a whole meal!
Your garden sure sounds pretty. Right now, we are still wallowing in winter up here in Michigan. All you talk about buying flats of flowers is starting to give me spring fever though!
Have wonderful Mayberry dreams, and hey to Sugarplum, too!

Hey Grandpappy Asa Congrats!!! Bet yer pleased as punch! Ro them flowers sound nice, real nice! Wish I had the time to do gardening. Won't be doing much of anything for a day or 2, that same little nasty poodle that bit me back in Nov. got me again today, worse this time, I might end up losing my thumbnail on my left hand, he went right through it. I corrected him with a firm "NO!" didn't grab him, didn't hit him, didn't choke him (altho I wanted to, trust me!) just looked him in the eye & said NO & the lady started CRYING!! Told me he didn't like to be scolded & it hurt her to see him scolded! My mouth got ahead of my brain (that happens alot w/ me) & I told her I didn't like being bitten either & unless she started correcting him, he was going to keep doing it. At any rate, I got him finished, I now have 10 different bites on my left hand (& he was muzzled after the 1st one!) & I told her not to call me anymore, it's not worth it for me to go through that. And they are trying to outlaw MY dog just because of her breed, ask me Poodles & Coc-kers should top the list! Anyway, gonna go soak my hand in some more peroxide & smear it with Triple Antibiotic ointment. Trying to keep the wound open for a day or 2 & let the blood flow to get as much of the nasty mouth germs out. Talk to ya'll in a bit.
