Does anyone know if there's a Don Knotts rose? There are many named after celebrities, so it's possible. However, not likely, not yet anyway. You can bet I'll be watching, and if one is developed and released, it will have a place of honor in my yard.

I think The Count is back. Yesterday morning, I entered a post, or thought I did, but when I scrolled through this morning to find where I had left off yesterday, it's just not there. I think The Count stole it. (Or maybe I forgot to hit "Post Your Comments". I do that sometimes.)

March 01, 2006 - Msg 35144: Good morning Porch! Lots to do but I just had to drop by and say "howdy" to all you goo people. You know what I enjoyed most about last nights tribute on TV Land? It was knowing that many of you and other TAGS fans were laughing along with me in spirit, if not body. I like the Deputy/Landlord/Friend tribute that ran also, REV. It was touching.

I'll probably tune in for the TAGS episodes this weekend, but will skip the "Three's Company." I wasn't allowed to watch it as a kid, and had no interest in it when I got a little older. I have since watched a couple of episodes, but didn't really enjoy them (for some of the same reasons I wasn't allowed to watch as a kid, and it seems really dated). I'm no expert, but Mr. Knotts' talents seemed kind of wasted in the show. For them that likes it, hope you enjoy 'em!

To Goober Msg 35179, although I have seen a few Gaither Family sing-a-longs on television, I did not know who Anthony Burger was. But after your post, I searched about him on the internet and was shocked to learn he was only 44 when he died of a heart attack on that cruise. March 02, 2006 - Msg 35191: Good morning, everyone. AFD, I know just what you mean, I've been reading, but just couldn't post as freely as I usually do. Seems like there's just not much to say, it's like it's all been said. My family and friends have been sending me condolences, and sharing their own feelings of bereavement as well. Some seem surprised that they feel the way they do, that it would matter to them as much as it does. I think that just shows how much Barney was a part of daily American life.

I've posted this before, but I want to say it again, in this context. Don Knotts held a magnifying glass up to all of us, and the image he saw became Barney Fife. Barney was each of us, squared. Perhaps that's why we loved him so - we saw our own reflection in some of the things we did. In a way, he gave us permission to just be ourselves. Who doesn't do foolish things, say silly things? Who doesn't quake in the face of danger sometimes, or brag, or gossip, even fail a friend, at least temporarily? He was all of us, with all of our weaknesses and failings. Yet in the end, he would rise above it all, and do right. He lived, he laughed, and he loved, just as we all do.

Thanks, Don, for giving us such a comic view of our own selves. Maybe through what you showed us, we'll take ourselves a bit less seriously. Thanks for the memories, Barn!

You'll find this porch to be a very pleasant place to visit. Most of us drop by at least once a day. Others come when they can, and everyone is always welcome. Any friend of Barney and Andy is a friend of ours. --Romeena

March 02, 2006 - Msg 35193: Good morning, ROMEENA. Looks like you're sittin' solo on the Porch this morning. Did we miss the bus for breakfast? Hey to everybody out there!

The Larry King LIve program last night was very nice. I thought all those on it were wonderful. I found Ron Howard and Joyce DeWitt's comments especially touching. And it was great that everyone kept the focus on Mr. Knotts and not their current projects. I thought Ron Howard's participation was especially telling of his respect for Don Knotts. "The bigger they are, the nicer they are," as Barney would say.

Good to see you Boo. How goes the house?
It's always sad to see a person pass away that you have not known on a personal level, but rather thru tv or movies. But this has been very different for me with Don Knotts. It has been way more personal than I could have ever imagined. I have actually shed tears and felt like a huge loss has occured in my life. Is that odd? Have any of you felt this? It's like a member of my family has died. But it was very therapetic (as Barney would say) watching the special last night on Larry King. Karen Knotts, Don's Daughter shared some rare insight to the beloved mans life. If you didn't see it, I hope you get to if it airs again on the weekend or something.

WHAT A COPPER, BARNEY FIFE!

March 02, 2006 - Msg 35228: Hey, MDC, guess what I found...

(Sung to the tune of "Oh, My Darlin' Clementine")
In a jailhouse, down in Dixie, fightin' crime and risking life,
Dwelled a sheriff and his buddy, pistol-packing Barney Fife.
Oh, my darin', oh, my darin', oh, my darin' Barney Fife.
He's a deadly crime-stopper, what a copper, Barney Fife.
One day there came a-ridin' two bad men to rob a bank.
But Fife was tricky, a dead-eye dickey. Now they're locked up in the tank.
(Andy added this part:)
Oh, my Barney, oh, my Barney, had a jail and couldn't lock it.
Had one bullet for his pistol, had to keep it in his pocket.

Hey, FLOYD, I hope I get to see you at Mayberry Days this year.

Have a great evening, everyone!

March 02, 2006 - Msg 35230: Hi Asa, to answer your question about the house, we are meeting with the man who is doing the houseplans tonight, so hopefully we will get the ball rolling soon.

While I am sad about Don passing on, I don't think it has affected me as deeply as some of you who have been watching TAGS for a very long time, even growing up with it. I didn't start watching it until I was about 30. I am really sorry I had to miss the Larry King interview, thanks for giving us that site so I can read it.

Having said that, I do however, think I will have a tougher time when Andy passes. He reminds me alot of my Dad when I was growing up.

Better go, got to get ready to talk to "the man" about some houseplans.

Boo

March 02, 2006 - Msg 35231: Boo, Funny you should say that, Andy reminds me a lot of my dad too. My dad even combed his hair over with that little roll-up in the front like Andy. And he sometimes wore his trousers inside his boots like Andy. He was thin like him too. Yup, Andy is my father-figure.

March 02, 2006 - Msg 35232: Me-They, Thanks for that link to the Larry King transcript. I tried to stay up late enough to see it at 11 last night but couldn't make it. Boo, glad your calling the man for them plans. Some things you best not cut corners on.

I just got to wondering why they didn't invite Betty Lynn on to Larry King last night. I mean she was his girl after all. And I agree Charlotte, I can't believe they list her as unidentified female in the transcripts. For the love of Mike, these folks at CNN are living in another world! :)

Has anyone heard when the services for Don are going to be?

March 02, 2006 - Msg 35237: Good Evening Friends,

For those of you in the Atlanta area Wb36 is running a Barney marathon on Saturday starting at 7pm.

Me-They- Thank you for the link to the transcript. That will be my bedtime reading tonight.

Romeena- I'm glad your Mother is doing better?

Spot & Buckeye- there is NO other baseball team better than the Braves!!!

Buckeye- I'm assuming you're from Ohio. What part?

Boo & Charlotte- You both must have some amazing Father's if they remind you of Andy.

MDC- I too always thought of him as Barney no matter what other character he played, and what his family life was. He made that character come to life.

You know how they have been doing some remakes lately such as Bewitched, Starsky & Hutch, and Dukes of Hazzard? You don't think Hollywood would ever allow them to remake our beloved TAGS? Lord Almighty, I hope not.

Well, I'd better hit the hay. I just want to thank all of the warm welcomes I've received from the porch. Undecided, how 'bout you join me as a newcomer?

Blessings to you and yours, ~Farrah

March 02, 2006 - Msg 35238:
Hello porch...great to see ya all!

Spot...So you feel that the Braves are going to be strong with all the changes this year? I hope you are right. Every year "they" say that this will be the year that they won't win the division championship but yet they always come through. I truly feel that Bobby Cox is the greatest "players" coach ever. One thing, I really hated to see Furcal go. Also hope their pitching is strong this year.

I was told that the recent Larry King interview with Andy and Ron will be re-aired this coming Sunday night. Has anyone else heard this?

Hey that's a great story Buckeye.
In the same way, I'm so glad that when I make some dumb mistake, God can turn it around to make something good out of it.

Take care porch and be blessed.

March 02, 2006 - Msg 35239: Good evening, all. Spent an interesting morning and early afternoon, sitting the terminally ill husband of a very good friend. My friend is still working, trying to conserve her time off until she really needs it, and while she does have Hospice services with her husband, he doesn't qualify for 24-hr nurses just yet. Soon, I think, but not yet. So, some of us just "drop in" and spend a few hours with Johnny while Bev is working. He grumbles and pretends to try to send us away, but we stay, and we know he's secretly glad not to be left alone. We had a very frank and open discussion about death and dying. I'm very happy to say that Johnny became a Christian a few years ago, after a lifetime of scoffing and belittling those "sissies up at the church". Johnny knows his time is short, and he's facing it with a mixture of courage and apprehension. Who wouldn't be a bit apprehensive? As he said, he knows where he's going, and that's okay, but he's a little concerned about the trip! He's on morphine now, and is fairly comfortable, but he's not sure how long that will last, and I think it's the pain he fears the most, undertandably. So friends, please remember my friend Johnny in your prayers.

Farrah, I believe you were referring to MDC's mom, as she's recovering from pneumonia. Sweet thoughts, wrong porchster! Don't worry, it happens to all of us.

Well, I'm off to bed. Sugarplum says 10-4. --Romeena

March 02, 2006 - Msg 35240: My stars! Make that "sitting WITH the terminally ill husband, etc." Will I ever learn to proofread? --Romeena

March 02, 2006 - Msg 35241: Hey porch. I too have had a hard time dealing with Don Knotts death, so I have to say I agree with those of you who posted your feelings. I avoided the porch because it was so hard to know what to say. To me, he is the the very heart of everything I love most about the Andy Griffith Show. I always pictured him as such a "real" person; just a nice, friendly man. It was so good to know he was out there someplace, maybe watching the reruns himself. I miss him. And darn it, I had to work late last night and I missed the Larry King thing. If anyone hears if they are going to rerun that one, please tell me so I can watch it.
- Hazel

Andy: Go ahead, tell me. I'm all ears.
Barney: Yeah, you always was.

March 02, 2006 - Msg 35242: When Boo (Msg 35230) and Charlotte Tucker (Msg 35231) mentioned how Andy reminds them of their own fathers, let me mention about one of my elderly neighbors. Not only does she remind me of Aunt Bee through her actions and clothing, but she even looks like Aunt Bee in her facial features and hairdo.

To Asa (Msg 35234), the last I read was that the funeral was to be private so no details will be released. However, there is supposed to be a public memorial service sometime in the coming weeks. I guess they will release more information after the private funeral.

And Rev (Msg 35238), looks like you are correct about Larry King reruning the Andy Griffith and Ron Howard tribute to Don Knotts this Sunday at 9pm Eastern. Check it out at Larry King

March 03, 2006 - Msg 35243: Be careful when you're doing HTML coding as you can break the planks here at the porch. Not too hard to fix but I had to crawl under there with them spiders and hook that board back down. --Floyd

March 03, 2006 - Msg 35244: Wow! Only Floyd beat me to the Porch this morning. (Hey, Floyd, don't go whackin' at those spiders with your hammer or BLOOEY! The whole shebang might come down.)

MDC: You're very welcome. Glad to be able to assist.

ROMEENA: What a wonderful and terrible duty. You're right, though. Even when we are sure where we are going, and can't wait to get there, soem apprehension is only human. No doubt many of his thoughts go to the ones he will leave behind.

This summer I had an incident happen that put me in the hospital for several days. Although it turned out not to be serious, for awhile there I was thinking the worst was possible. My pastor came in to visit and I told him that my chief worry was the effect on my family emotionally and with regard to their safety and security should something happen to me. He gave me something to remember. He said that God has used me to take care of your family, but, as important as I am to them, I shouldn't forget that they were created by Him and He doesn't require my help to care of them. Some may not have liked that; I found it very comforting.

BOO: Glad things are coming along on the house. Keep us apprised.

Anyway, good morning Porch!!!

March 03, 2006 - Msg 35249: Wow, Me-They, what a wonderful thought. Your pastor is a very spiritually astute man. I'd never really thought of it that way. I'm guessing that he knew how you would react to that statement, and might not have used it with someone else. Really, caring for our families is God's gift to us, more so than to the family. It's a joy. Proof of that can be found in my own life. I'm surviving without my husband to take care of me, but I sorely miss having him to look after. I'd love to cook his favorite meals for him, and see that his clothes were in order. Yet, had I passed first, I know he wouldn't have gone hungry or worn dirty clothes (at least not when anyone was looking). He would, however, have missed keeping my car maintained, helping me with the vacuuming, accompanying me on shopping trips to carry my packages. Looking after someone you love is a natural activity, a joy and a blessing. Strange how God always seems to have it worked out right, don't you think?

Poor Horatio, thanks for the link. I'll definitely watch that interview again, and will be alerting my friends and family as well. Might even tape it, if I can figure out how to make the VHS recorder work. My old one broke, and the new combo has so many bells and whistles and totally unnecessary features that I haven't figured it out yet. Humph! Some of this new-fangled stuff is just a bit much. I had a new programmable, fully automatic thermostat installed on my furnace and a/c unit. 'Bout froze to death for the first three days. I still don't understand how to program it, but have managed to figure out how to just run it up or down, and switch from heat to a/c manually. In other words, I can now do with the new one exactly what I was doing with the old one! Go figure.

Have a beautiful, blessed day today, everyone. Sugarplum says "over and under". --Romeena

March 03, 2006 - Msg 35250: Romeena (Msg 35249), before you rely on correctly programming your new vcr, try a test recording before the Larry King interview. This way you will know if you programmed it correctly. If all else fails, set your alarm clock to 5 minutes before the interview so you can put your vcr into manual record.

March 03, 2006 - Msg 35251: Yes, HORATIO, it was just a little joke about your little mishap. I'm no electronal wizard, but even I know that bigger wires won't solve all the problems. Good thinking, PAPPABEAR, to call the man!

March 03, 2006 - Msg 35252: To M-T Msg 35251. Good joke about the bigger wires. But I hardly think that locking up the whole Front Porch was a "little mishap". My older sister had made a "sugar cube" church for a center piece on our Christmas table and she applied some "snow" and gum drops to the cardboard base. Well, I thought the snow was whipped cream and I plunged my finger in it to scoop some into my mouth. Surprize! She had whipped up Ivory Flakes and i got a mouthful of SOAP!
