February 21, 2006 - Msg 34265: Good sweep, Mavis.

Hey to Elmer and Ruth in Ohio. Stop by and sit a spell with us now and again.

I remember going to sunrise services at the 50 South Drive-In in Emporia, Ks, on Easter Sunday a few times with my aunt. They'd serve cinnamon rolls and hot cocoa before the service. Yum.
Another "drive-in" memory is when I was not quite 7 years old, the movie "Freaky Friday" came out and we went to the drive in to see it on a double feature on a Friday night. We were in the middle of the movie and had to evacuate the drive-in because a tornado was in the direct (and I do mean direct) vicinity. We had to scramble back in the cab of the pickup because it started raining and hailing bigtime and head home. Would you believe to this day, I have never seen the ending to that movie. : )

Prayers for Sean, Boo, bless his heart.

February 22, 2006 - Msg 34268: Morning porch pals.
Thanks for sweeping Mavis. Mighty nice of ya!
Boy Ro and Mavis, I also have many memories of a child and riding my horse. Rode her all over the place. Our favorite thing would be to load up supplies, including sleeping bags, and ride out to a river that ran within 5 miles of our house, and camp there for a few days. Oh that was a blast. When I got a little older I could always get work on local farms. One of the jobs I always got was watering fields of alfalfa. We flood irrigate here by setting up canvas da-ms in ditches. Seemed like the water times always came in the middle of the night. So I'd be out there making sure everything got water at 2 o'clock in the morning. Just me, usually my border collie Prince,(Prince was a she,go figure) and about 8 bazillion skeeters.
Elmer and Ruth, come join us. We have a rocker here for you. It's a double.
Boo, prayers for Sean. Kids can be so darn mean to one another. Hopefully he will learn that if he does not react to their taunts, it's no fun anymore and they'll move on to someone else.
Chicken ala king is the special at the diner today. Spots treat. Get there early cause the mashed potatoes are better then.

When I was little I was blessed with lots of animals around, I had a horse named Ladybird, a baby fox named Sheba, a lot of cats, a lot of pigs, milk cows, and Pal the wonder dog. My brother had a cooooon dog named Hector. I guess that is why I still have so many animals around - just can't but help to love 'em.

I am sorry for Sean, Boo. Please let him know that we all care for him. I don't remember how old Sean is but my oldest is 9 - maybe they could be penpals. Maybe a distant friend would do him good. You can email me at bbaugh@sunmandearborn.k12.in.us and let me know.

You have a drive-in? No way! I am so jealous! I often drive by the spot where our old drive-in used to be (the old camera room and concession stand are still there covered with weeds) and I tell the kids stories about it. I always tell them that if I ever get rich, I'm bringing back the drive-in. You know, I did some searching on the net and found out that the nearest drive-in to where we live is in Lubbuck! All the way on the other side of Texas!

Thank you all for your prayers, ya'll are the best of friends. Sean seemed much better when I took him to school today.

Great memories Hazel! Asa, sounds like you were a very independant and hard-working young man, good for you!

Prayers for your family and your church, Buckeye. Keep that positive att-tude.

I'm going to check out your site when I finish here, Mavis, thanks.

February 22, 2006 - Msg 34277:
Morning Folks

buckeye-Those are some great memories. I live in a very rural area and one can still hear the 2:50 (am) train whistle. On a summer evening with the windows open, I just love hearing it in the distance. We have one filling-station, one restaurant, one traffic signal and about 600 other folks. It's one of those places that Rodney Dangerfield was thinking of when he joked, "you can't get there from here."

ASA-One one of my first jobs was also irrigating. In this area we have frost right into June and July so at night we would run water over strawberry plants to prevent the frost from ruining them, about 400 acres we would watch every night. It was actually quite beautiful the water would form a layer of ice over the plants protecting them from the frost. They looked like they sealed in glass.

Well, see you good folks soon,

A few years ago one of them was almost shut down for playing dirty movies, but they saw the light & no more dirty movies at our drive ins. I remember the first time I took my son & my neices & nephew, we loaded up the truck with pillows & lawn chairs & a cooler of Kool-Aid, snacks & all kinds of kid stuff, backed the truck in & they all watched some cartoon, don't even remember which one now, they were so excited, but by the time the movie was over, they were all asleep. haha Ya'll be good & act like somebody today, I got puppy feet to groom today.

We really need to sell my mother's house to get the bills paid off, I got a phone call this morning (again) from another bill collector wanting money & I just don't have it, I have them threatening to take my car back & another threatening foreclosure on my house. I just don't know what to do, I can't squeeze blood out of a turnip & I just don't have the money needed to pay all of my bills & my mother's bills on time every month. I have lost more weight from the stress (down to a size 4 now) & I just don't know how much more I can take. I know they say the Lord doesn't put more on you than you can handle, but I surely feel I am at my limit. Please pray for me to get some relief from all this. I pray morning, noon & night & I don't know if I am praying the wrong prayer or what. My Grandfather (a Baptist preacher) taught me not to pray for things that are for your own benefit, maybe that is what I am doing. All I know is I am already working 2 jobs & I am so tired now, I can't imagine taking on another job, but looks like I might have to. Thank you all & I'm sorry if I took up too much porch room asking this, but ya'll are like family to me & who do you go to but family.

February 22, 2006 - Msg 34288: Good morning everybody. Sorry that I missed that your son needed prayers, BOO. I added it to my list.

Thanks for the piece of peach pie, BUCKEYE. And thanks to AFD for making it.

AFD: I also remember seeing "Freaky Friday." I think we are about the same age. I remember it because it was the first "teen" movie that my parents took me to see. Before that it was stuff like "Aristocats," "The Sword in the Stone." I remember the last kid's movie I saw in the movies (before having kids myself) was "The Rescuers."

I forgot to mention yesterday that when we boys (usually 4-8) of us played war in the woods when we were a little older (say 9-12), we used bb guns! We actually shot them at each other, too. The rules were that you had to aim low, stay twenty paces away, and those with pump action guns could only pump them once. Of course, boys being boys and not always the best shots, we sometimes broke the skin. If our moms (or worse, dads) had found out they would have tanned our hides! We also had chestnut battles. For those of you not familiar, chestnuts come inside burr-covered balls about the size of a small apple. The hard burrs are about 1/2 inch long. We'd collect them in bags, divide up in teams and hurl them at each other. Doesn't that sound fun? The unlucky ended up with red welts punctuated by pinpr*ck cuts. Sounds like we were violent, but we also did stuff like fished quietly for hours, made clover chains for the girls, put on shows for the adults and bigger kids, and other more "civilized" stuff like that. Still, our parents only had to worry about our poor judgement and accidents; not all the external stuff we parents have to worry about today.

Dear Mavis, I am so sorry for the terrible stress you are under. I will join the prayers of the others. May God grant you his peace.

Thanks to all of you for praying for Sean. Today was a MUCH better day. We did, however have to go to the allergy dr and he confirmed that Sean is definitely allergic to peanuts! He told us we have to carry one of those Epi-pens everywhere in case he has a severe reaction (just in case someone slips him a peanut). I just have to tell you this funny story about the allergy dr. About a year or so ago we thought Sean might be allergic to peanuts and a date was scheduled to do the skin test. Well, we were in Colorado and I forgot about it so I called and was very apologetic and scheduled another appointment. Well, I have never missed a dr's appointment, not for myself, my kids or my elderly parents, but I actually forgot about the second appointment I had made to have Sean's allergies tested. I was so ashamed that I never called and rescheduled it. Now here is is over a year later and I finally got over it and made another appointment. When the dr came in I said, "Dr, I have been a very bad girl." and he immediately said something that I couldn't quite make out but I thought he said something about an unmentionable part of the male anatomy that starts with a "P". I didn't know how to react. I was thinking to myself, 'I've been bad, but not THAT bad" but I just said something stupid like, "Uh, huh". Anyway, later when we were out of the office, I asked Sean, "What did Dr. Stafford say when I told him I had been a bad girl?" and Sean said, "He said, 'Have you been feeding him peanuts?'"! Ha! I can't believe I even thought that! I was really starting to think there was something seriously wrong with that doctor.

Better go get the kids to bed. Goodnight,
Boo

Well, he was out fishing in the bay last weekend and he saw a man and a boy whose boat had capsized and they were both drowning. Tom jumped in and saved the boy, then went back in for the man. Pulling the man into the boat was very hard for Tom but he did it. The paramedics came and took the man and the boy to the hospital and one paramedic took a look at Tom and sent him straight to the hospital, too. Turns out Tom had a little heart attack and they found out he had major blockage in his arteries and he had no clue about it. They did a bypass and he is doing great. Isn't that wonderful that he was rewarded for his selfless act. In saving someone else, he more that likely saved his own life. Neat lesson in that.

February 22, 2006 - Msg 34327: Thank you all for your kind words & prayers. I am sorry to come to you all with that, but I just had to. Ya'll are the best bunch of folks, just makes me want to cry. I feel very blessed to count you all as my friends, even if we haven't met face to face. Again, thanks so much!

February 23, 2006 - Msg 34329: Don't know if you porchsters listen to gospel music recordings much, but Southern Gospel Pianist Anthony Burger passed away last night. He was at the piano on a Gaither Homecoming cruise. 44 years young. It's reported that he was playing "We Shall Behold Him" and collapsed.
Anthony started his career playing with the Kingsmen Quartet.
Prayers for his family.

February 23, 2006 - Msg 34330: Morning pals.
Hey Chuck, sounds like you got "tired" everytime you went swimming. (I crack me up)
Hazel, I forgot you don't happen to like your main dish concealed in a heavy scauce. Your Mother is the same way, ain't she?
Boo, No apologies needed. One of them true life things that happens to all of us sometimes. I almost decked a guy once cause I thought he called me something bad. And that is a neat story about the guy who rescued the folks on the boat.
Mavis, I feel honored that you feel comfortable bringing your problems here. These are good folks here. Best in the world. I know things will work out ok for you.
Howdy Rev. Good to see you.
You too Charlotte Tucker.
OK girl, so you played softball huh? We used to have a girls softball team here on the porch. We were pretty good too. Maybe we need to start that up again.
I wasn't familiar with that pianist Chuck, but sorry to hear of his demise.
Well I need to get over to the drugstore and see if they have any of that sulpha powder. I got me a little scratch putting new screws in my gun. I don't want a bad infection.

February 23, 2006 - Msg 34331: mavis, we're always here foreach other and you and the porch is a big comfort in a world that has forgotten that mayberry values world wide may be just a flicker, however we're still here to fan the flames of humanity. gizzmo, speaking for me only, we all post things we wish we hadn't and i never try to judge any posts as long as someonre says i goofed on that post. i haven't read your post but if you attacked another porchster it is not very mayberry socialy promoted. gizzmo, if you posted something that offended (again i haven't read your post) tom or anyone, and truly are sorry for it then post an apology and ask tom's forgiveness. February 23, 2006 - Msg 34332: Good morning everyone. BUCKEYE: That's why you're the mayor, I guess. The world would be a better place if we were all more neighborly and weren't so quick to anger. Most slights are unintentional. BOO: Your story may have been on the bubble, but I found it funny! Hey, CHUCK and everone else rockin' on this fine morning. This is the day the Lord has made...

Hey, everybody, I'm not one to gossip, but I hear ASA's done shot himself!

February 23, 2006 - Msg 34335: Thanks guys, you make me feel better. I think from now on I will proof-read before I hit the post button.

Buckeye, It was me who felt that I said something wrong, not Gizmo. I just thought we might have another "interloper" situation on our hands, know what I mean?

Homemaker, I talked to Sean about emailing your son and his first concern was his spelling but I told him I would help him with it, and he seems like he wants to. I think it would be good for him. I am going to try and help him with it today. Thanks again for the suggestion.

Better go...full day ahead!

Boo

February 23, 2006 - Msg 34336: Good morning, all. Hope everyone is doing well. Mavis, I got your email, and a response is on the way to your friend, copy to you.

Gizzmo, do you like to watch the Andy Griffith Show reruns? Also, this is just a wild guess, but is your husband's name Tom?

Boo, every time I think about some knuckleheaded kids making Sean cry, I'd like to go find them and smack them right smart. He's such a sweet kid, he doesn't deserve that. Of course, a more appropriate response would be to talk it over with the kids involved, let them know how much it hurts Sean, and prompt them to put themselves in his place and think about how they'd feel. It might work. Yeah, but it might not! This is exactly why I never wanted to be a teacher. I don't have the patience for dealing with snotty, cruel kids. I'd smack 'em, and get fired.

Some kids can also be very kind and intuitive. My youngest son always pulled for the underdog. When we first moved here, there was a family down the street that was just pathetic. The whole family was mentally deficient, to varying degrees. They had an 11 yr old son who would often come down to play with my David, who had just turned five. Dave played very patiently with him, and I asked him once why he spent so much time with a much older boy. His reply shocked me. "It's just his body that's older, mom. His head is the same age as me." Pretty profound. Sadly, a little later, I had to forbid David from playing with the boy, because a violent temper emerged, along about the time he hit puberty. I feared for David's safety, and while the boy couldn't be held responsible, David would still have been hurt. Finally, they moved away, and I was glad. Life isn't fair, sometimes.

But today, my squirrels are out in force, putting on a hilarious show, I'm home from working all night, and it's cold and drizzly, a wonderful day for sleeping. That's where I'm headed. Have a great day, everyone. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Boo, actually i thought your post was kinda cute!
Tho it was a subject that you didnt know how to respond to the doctor with, you DID pursue it with Sean, and you just found out that it was just a big misunderstanding! That's a GOOD thing!
Sorry i missed you on the APB OK girl. I forgot KY girl too, so let me say now: APB for ALL alphabet girls! haha
Me-They-- do you know the other words that Barney used to warm up his voice with? He used them over at Elenora Poltice's house. (Hint: what do you say when you are suppose to give something back to someone?)
Buckeye- ya got the burger barn open today? Richie Cunninghan is on the way over. ha
Fred Goss, if all truckers were like the two in BJ and the Bear, I'd be truckin' too. haha
Oh well, ya all have a good day, gotta go defend our ports,

February 23, 2006 - Msg 34338: Asa, I wasn't referring to the heavy sauce. I just didn't think a creature such as Hazel would want chicken (that's i before e except before n) for her main dish.
Charlotte Tucker

February 23, 2006 - Msg 34339: Boo, prayers for Sean. I feel for you. My daughter isn't picked on, she's just given the cold shoulder and totally shut out by the girls in her grade. It's so hard to watch. She's always had communication and social delays that make her extremely quiet and not really on the same level of discussion as the others so they just shut her out. But she's a happy kid who loves being home, playing her guitar, watching TV, etc. Probably it's all harder for me than for her. Although the older she gets, the more she's aware of how they treat her. Sometimes it really bothers her. Other times she just ignores it. Sadly, she's a pretty athletic kid, but coaches treat her the same as the kids. She can't always follow their instructions so they just put her on the bench rather than try to help her. I'm convinced that coaches like the ones in Radio, Coach Carter, etc. are merely in the movies.

buckeye-only got a second for now but the uncomfortableness I felt had to do with the idea someone might be "messing with us" here on the old porch. Boo mentioned a possible "interloper" and I have the same feeling. I could be wrong I often am. But, something doesn't ring true.

take care,

February 23, 2006 - Msg 34345: Mornin to the Porch...

Chuck mentioned it a few posts back, but I've just chatted with a couple of folks in the industry who could confirm. Anthony did pass away last evening, and it was on the Gaither cruise, while he was playing. No official cause yet, but it appears to be a heart attack. For those who knew or knew of him, he was one of the most talented pianist around. He did play for the Kingsmen and is on all the Gaither videos playing. He also travels with the TRIO (Kirk Talley and Shane Dunlap), and has been a blessing to so many folks with his talent. Remember his family in prayer. His daughter is a part of a lot of the Gaither events, not sure if she was with him or not. Anthony was also just named MR Stienway by the Stienway paino folks, a great honor and tribute to his ability.

Ya'll be good, have a great day...and if the air around you seems a little sweeter, or the birds song sounds a little nicer (maybe like a southern gospel song), you'll know why.

February 23, 2006 - Msg 34355: Evening Porch! Ya'll are just the greatest! Makes me want to cry & I ain't talking about one of the Darlings songs. Talked to the real estate lady & the electric company this morning about putting a heat pump in Mom's house, I think what we decided to do was just make an allowance for the heat pump. Seems that is the problem with the house not selling. Had a busy day today & gotta get my bookwork done, so I'll be back in a bit. Hey to ever'body!

February 23, 2006 - Msg 34356: Evenin' Y'all! Mavis, hope things improve for you-I said a prayer for you last night and will keep you in my prayers.Prayers for Sean also. I hate to see kids mistreated.I worked as a teacher's aide for 20+ years and I saw and heard so much cruelty between kids.I'd try to smooth things over, make it not hurt so much for the picked on kid whenever I could. And yes,it was hard not to put a whupping on the mean ones!
I want to tell y'all something about my 2 and a half year old grandchild Laci. Most of y'all know that she was born premature and had to undergo open heart surgery as a baby. She is delayed in speech for obvious reasons and we don't get a lot of words out of her right now. Anyway, since her surgery we have noticed that every now & then while playing on the floor,Laci will stretch her arms out and laugh and squeal at something only she sees.My daughter calls them "Laci's spirits"-I prefer "angels." Anyway,if you've ever witnessed this,it is obvious that this little girl sees something we don't. Last night my daughter called me and told me that Laci was playing with her "spirits" and she asked her " Laci, who are you playing with? Laci, who do you see?" Laci answered by saying something we've NEVER heard her say-

Laci replied " Jesus".
Y'all have a wonderful night.Love to all!

February 23, 2006 - Msg 34359: Oh, my goodness, possum! That is just so exciting. Bless her little heart! Who can tell what those little ones see and experience? They're so freshly sent from God, I have no problem believing that they have memories and perhaps special vision. It fades, regrettably, but if you gaze into the eyes of a baby, you can almost see those things, too.

The story is told in my extended family of an occurrence at the "visitation" before the funeral of a much-loved elderly person. A family with a child of about three or four entered the room, the habitually out-spoken child stopped in his tracks, and blurted out "Hey! Who ordered the angels?" As you can imagine, that stopped conversation! When questioned, the child said the angels had left, but were standing beside the casket when they walked in. No argument from me, friends!

Welcome, Gizzmo! I'm glad that our own TOM explained things for us. He's one of our much-loved members, and any friend of his is a friend of ours.

Well, guess I'll go rustle up something to eat. My little "nap" today turned into a marathon. Now I'm all bright-eyed and bushytailed. Guess I'll watch Season Five for quite a while this evening. Hmmm. Not a bad deal, I guess.

February 23, 2006 - Msg 34365: WOW, Possum, I got some BIG chills when I read about Laci! I think that is one of the neatest things I have ever heard. I remember when my nephew (who is 25 now) was about 2 and my sister had a picture of Jesus on an album cover of a record. My nephew had never said the name Jesus before and he picked up that picture, held it up at the end of his two little arms and very gleefully shouted, "Jee-Jee" (his way of saying Jesus)! It was the cutest thing, like he had just rediscovered his long-lost friend. Makes you wonder... I have a memory of being about 4 and my grandmother had just passed away. As a child I remember having that feeling of God present with me and when Grandma died I was very concerned for her whereabouts. I couldn't yet understand that people leave forever. I remember going upstairs alone to talk to God and I knelt down by the bed and asked God to take care of Grandma. Seems hard to believe now but I remember feeling a hand on my shoulder and after that I was ok and knew Grandma was ok. Kids really have it going on when it comes to the spiritual...Jesus did say, "...as such is the kingdom of heaven". Too bad we don't stay so sweet as we grow up.

We started a new Beth Moore bible study today at church. Its called The Patriarchs. Have any of you done it yet? Seems like its going to be really good.

Ro, which ep is that from about the pitting prunes?? I don't recall that one at all. How is season 5? I still need to get season 4 but I have to figure out if it comes under my household budget or the entertainment budget. If its household, forget it.

I am going mad trying to make decisions about the house. We decided to make it a one story (yes!) or maybe a story and a half with a big attic upstairs. We are having to meet next week with the guy who is doing the plans and I have to decide on some things. I just am not the type that enjoys this sort of thing. All I need is more stress!

Mavis, it sounds like you are moving in the right direction. I am very proud of you for hanging in there with God. We are all put to the test and you have had some incredibly major ones. I remember when I was in the darkest hour of my life and really didn't know how I could live another day (or minute). The emotional pain was so bad I didn't think I could even breathe. I went through a very dark time for about 3 to 4 years but I never gave up on the Lord and He did get me through it. I know that He is the reason I am alive today. If He did it for me, I know He will do it for you. I also know that I wouldn't be the person I am today if I hadn't gone through it (I used to be as selfish as a giraffe!! heehee). Just as gold comes out of the fire pure and refined, so will your life be as you trust in Him.

Better hit the sheets. My prayers for all of you, and thank you so much for your concern and prayers (and sweet words) for Sean. I wish you could all know him, he is precious!

Nighty-Night
Boo
