Didn't get to see the 500 but listened to it driving up the road. When I got home I watched the highlights and MAVIS I agree with you about Stewart. I really thought he was mellowing out a little but today seems to prove other wise.

Ha! I think you are right, Hazel!
It is mighty cool here to a Texan. It didn't make it to 40 degrees here today. Seriously, the dogs are running around shaking, even in the house. We all have such thin blood. I saw a huge hawk today perched on a high branch and his feathers were puffed out so far he looked like a big owl. You could tell the poor thing was freezing. Of course I ran around all day in a hoody trying to soak it in before summer hits. It will be back to shorts and flip flops by the end of the week.
Had to miss preachin' this morning. Erin has the Pink Eye. Guess I'll have to call the doctor tomorrow.

Hi SPOT, hope the power is staying on for ya.
I just finished looking at the pictures on Romeena's photo site. I had not seen alot of them, how neat! Buckeye, you looked exactly as I pictured you except you are even more handsome (loved that 62 car-I was born in 62 so it was a very good year). Chuck, my what a beautiful family you have, your wife and daughters are just gorgeous. MDC, I have a picture of myself in that exact spot on Pike's Peak. I was only in my 20's and it was in October so it was snowing, I think. Anyway, I am wrapped in a Mexican blanket and look very cold. I will try to find it some day and maybe Ro can post it next to yours for fun. Of course all my old photos are packed up in storage somewhere and that definitely qualifies as an old one. By the way, now that I know you were an English teacher I feel pretty paranoid about my punctuation....I know I have a tendancy to let my sentences run on and on....When I got to college and took first year English composition, I found that there was alot I had missed in high school! I had a very strange college English prof who I think was on cocaine or something. Turns out that years later he was arrested after he moved to Austin and abducted some young woman and held her hostage as a slave for a couple of years! I knew he was wierd. Enough of this meaningless chatter....Lydia would be disgusted.
Nighty-Night,
Boo

Good morning, everyone. Buckeye, I don't know about the shows where Barney didn't wear his gun, but I'm almost positive his bullet was in his left shirt pocket.
homemaker, you're gonna love that digital camera. So versatile! My favorite part is that I can put the pictures on the computer and see them instantly, delete the ones I don't want, print some if I wish, and save the rest. No cost, except for the photo paper and ink. I don't print very many, because my whole family shares pictures by email and stores them on the computers. Once in a while, I'll print some for a friend. I took some shots at a wedding for a friend who doesn't have a computer, so I printed those and gave them to her.
God is good. I just saw my little "Crip", a pigeon who had a broken leg. A few months ago, he hopped on one foot, the other leg stuck out at a right angle to his body. I've seen him a few times since then, each time the leg moving downward a little, and finally it made it to the ground, but wasn't very effective. This morning, he's walking very well, just a little hitch in his get-along, but not much. Makes me happy!
I'm working on the album, making a few adjustments - finally joined ($15/yr) so I have unlimited storage space. I was just using the free service, ran out of allowed space, so was forced to cough up the $15. Pretty cheap, really, for what all the site offers. By the way, someone (Buckeye?) asked a while back what prints cost. I think they're about 18 cents, when you order them from there. You don't have to be a member to order prints.
Well, gotta run. I have to work tonight, so need to run a few errands and then try to get a short nap. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

MDC, when did you teach (what years)?
Thanks for the "welcome back", Asa, and for answering my question. It leads me to wonder what kind of a mother Peggy was after all I have heard about Tatum's childhood. Saw something about how terrible her childhood was with Ryan on TV...sounds like she had a rough time growing up and her mom was never mentioned. She talked about going to clubs and drinking (and other things) as a child. She has a book out about it and is on the outs with her dad, I think. Interesting....

Boo, I believe I read somewhere that Joanne Moore (Peggy) battled the bottle in real life. That pains me to say that cause I thought so highly of her. Saddens me to think she had an addiction to the spirits. Especially if it impacts your children. I think I'll just remember her sitting on the front porch with Andy, in her polka dot dress, singing away on a star lit night.

I was watching the ep "Prisoner of Love" last night and I think that it was perhaps the most mysteriously romantic, if those are the words, of any other episode, even the class reunion episode, or any with Peggy and certainly any with Helen. ha There was the piano and violin music throughout, the silohette in the jail cell, the near passionate kiss, the perfume on the collar, all pretty suggestive for a comedy series in 1964! The only comic releif is when Otis comes in!

So sad about Peggy, I know I asked but now I kind of wish I didn't know...think I'll do as Asa said and remember her in that polka-dot dress singing on the porch with Andy and Opie. Seems like Hollywood ruined alot of good lives.
MDC, I remember the signs for "The Thing", but my dad wasn't the type to stop and see it. We were usually on our way to Michigan to visit my mom's family and Dad was never in a good mood on those trips! Buckeye, you asked me about my 70's memories. One of them is of my parents getting a brand new car when I was 5. It was a green Pontiac, probably a 67 model. Very plain and no air condtioning, of course. We sure loved it, though. I think it is the only car my parents ever bought new before or since. Dad eventually put one of those air conditioners in that you mounted under the dash because the summers here are terrible. Anyway, most of my 70's memories are of a slower paced life in a small town. I grew up in a little place called Ingleside and the population was under 5,000. We rode our bikes everywhere and never wore shoes. For real fun we would ride up to the corner store and buy penny candy and put it in those little paper sacks. Wow, remember when you could get 25 pieces of candy for a quarter?! We also played outside all the time, making tree houses or forts, mud pies, playing chase and "swing the statue", and staying out till dark laying in the clover and looking at the stars in the summer. Boy, that sure beat the heck out of all the video games kids spend their time on these days (and alot cheaper, too). We weren't spoiled like kids are today. We got presents at Christmas and one thing for our birthday and mom would fix our favorite meal. I am always surprised at the lengths parents go to these days to out-do each other on the kid's birthday parties. I think its embarassing. I have friends who way over-indulge their children at birthday parties not because of the kids, but to impress their kid's classmate's parents. Go figure. I only had one very simple birthday party when I turned seven and I don't think I need therapy today because of it.
Well, would like to stay and chat but there is always something to do. I have been trying to pay more attention to my dad because I think he is depressed or not feeling well. It must be hard to be 80.
Have a good day,
Boo

Oh, well, I'll try and stop back later. Time to make the doughnuts (I could actually use a Krispy Creme right about now--forgot my Mr. Cookie Bar). HOMEMAKER: I'm in! And I'll even settle for Dutch Treat.

Spot- we're buying my in laws' house. It's only about a mile from where we currently live. They've been talking about downsizing for years. They finally did it. At first I wasn't really interested in buying their house. It would always seem like it was THEIR house. They built it and have been the only owners. However, when they told me what they would sell it to us for....I told 'em at that price they could keep their name on the mailbox for all I care. LOL Needless to say, we jumped on it as soon as they said they had found a smaller place.

Hey BOO- I think you just described my childhood, just a decade or so later! ha We spent a lot of time outside also, even in the Phx heat. We actually had a canal at the end of our street where we would swim and catch crawdaddies.
Did you play Red Light Green Light and Mother May I?
Well guys, there was a bit too much bumpin' on Sunday. Loks like nascar is cracking down a bit on that moulage. On to california.
I heard that sports broadcast legend Curt Gowdy died yesterday! (86) I remember him best doing those World Series games in the 60's-70's.
He got his start in 1943 when a friend asked him to do play by play for a local high school game. A radio exec heard him and hired him and the rest is history! A good decent man.

Good morning to you, Me-They and good news about the baby! Now I happen to know that we porch folks have lots of ideas about baby names so maybe we can help....how about Hogette?? Remember she is the girl who had her head sewed up by the taxidermist?
Tell us more about the house, Rev. Besides the price, what else do you like about it?
Wow, MDC, thanks for the memory of Red Light Green Light. I had forgotten all about that one. It was one of my favorites, and yes, we played Mother May I, and Simon Says and Red Rover. We also used to put two big picnic tables together to make a stage and we would perform our own musicals (I think we came up with that after the musical Oliver came out). We also had this great, but dangerous game, in which one kid would lay on the ground with his feet up and would then launch another kid through the air (kind of like the porch scene when Andy launches Barney).
I caught a kind of blooper the other day on TAGS that I am wondering if anyone else caught: It was in High Noon In Mayberry. It is the first scene in which the mailman drops the mail through the slot in the door and Andy squats down to pick it up from the floor. When he gets up, he has a wedgie! Look for it, its subtle but funny.
Gotta go take care of Erin...she wants a fruit snack. Later...
Boo
PS-thanks again MDC, I think Erin and I will play a little game of Red Light Green Light today...I know she will love it. She makes me play Mother May I all the time.

My childhood was much the same as yours Boo and MDC. Very small farming town I grew up in. Summers seemed to last forever. We had some watering ponds we would go swimming in, float down canals, sleep outs under the stars. Our thing was to go up to a main highway and gather up any empty pop bottles that hadn't broke, and take them to a near by little store and redeem them for that penny candy. Remember them paper tube things that had some kind of sweet powdery stuff in it. Boy, those were great days. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Glad all looks well Me-They.
Well back to work for me.

'Bout fell off my chair on the Andy wedgie comments. Maybe that's why he kept his hands in his pockets a lot - to alleviate that problem.
I remember playing all those outside games, too. When we were young, we weren't allowed out of the yard, so all the neighborhood kids came to our house. When we finally moved away, the landlord told my folks they were good renters, but he was a little glad we were leaving so the grass would grow back. (BTW - the only car my folks bought new was also a Pontiac - although it was 1979).
Glad to hear things went well with the U/S, Me-They, and congrats on having a girl. I go in tomorrow, and hubby is still balking on wanting to find out. I may just tell the U/S gal to write it down and let the Doc tell me at my next appt. An interesting thing my doc did tell me though, was that when a couple says they don't want to know the gender the U/S folks will put on the ppwk "fetal gender not discussed" and even the doc doesn't know (at least that's what they do here).
Sounds like you've got kids coming out your ears, homemaker. (I'll see you at Blimpie's later - sounds good to me).
Prayers for all.

Thanks for all the kind words. Wow! I remember all those games as well. I also grew up in the 1970s (was 10 in 1976) in the "country." We kicked our shoes off the day after school ended and only put them back on to go somewhere with the folks or clean out the chicken house. I still remember getting up just about every day and running out to do my garden chores so I could go off and play. There were a bunch of kids around and we'd all go off back in the woods or to the stream until our moms called us for dinner. Most of us were boys, so we pretty much did "boy" stuff: played war, sailed boats down the stream, played baseball (and Kick the Can after dark!), etc. I can't imagine just turning my kids loose outside for hours these days. I'm so sorry that they won't be able to experince the fun, freedom and adventure I did as a kid. We do our best, but it won't ever be the same as it was back then. Gosh, such wonderful memories!

Hey Chuck! You all still got much snow. Ours up here near Spfd Mo has just about disintegrated.
As far as colored seasons 6-8, I think they should do fair, probably not as well as 1-5, but most diehard TAGS fans will want them in their collection. I need to get on the stick, as I only have season 2. I do have 237 of the 249 episodes on video, so if I need a fix of the seasons I don't have, I can still get one.

Oh my stars! I work one night, miss the porch for a day or so, and it takes me an hour to catch up. But what fun the catching up turned out to be. I remember all the things you folks are reminiscing about, and more besides.
A lot of what you describe I remember vicariously through my own children's experiences - I was already an adult! My early childhood memories involve signs that read "Uncle Sam Wants You!", and balls of tin foil salvaged from gum wrappers and cigarette packs - we never did anything with them, but were convinced we were helping out with the war effort. FDR and his "fireside chats", when everyone sat around the radio and listened, and when the speech was over, the adults would hug each other and make reassuring comments.
I remember my uncles leaving for the war, and being secretly glad that my own father worked at a job that was classified as vital to the war effort, so he was exempt from the draft. He finally did enlist anyway, but didn't have to go because the war ended a couple of weeks later.
My kids, who grew up at the same time as most of you, were outdoors all day, daylight to dark, and half the time I didn't really know where they were, but I never felt like they were in any danger. All the kids played like that. We lived on the very edge of town, and they played in fields and pastures and little woods. They threw rocks at a bull and raced him to the fence! (I didn't know about that until much later, the little weasels.)
Much of my own childhood involves animals. I had a horse, and would go off on a summer day and be gone all day, with nothing but a sandwich that I carried inside my shirt until I got hungry. I knew all the peaceful places, where my horse could just graze on the clover and rye grass, and I'd lie back on his rump and watch the cloud pictures go by. I rarely saddled him, preferred bareback riding. I do need to use a saddle these days, though, strength and balance aren't what they were.
Gosh, sorry for the rambling. You guys are the cats, you know that? Thanks for the memories! Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Wonder why I grew up to be a dog groomer?? teehee I do remember Mom taking us to Dunkin Donuts every Sat morning on her way to the grocery store tho. Never did figure out why she grocery shopped on Sat. when she worked in an A & P for over 20 years? Well, off to take care of my bookwork for the night, then going to bed, I am worn out today. Had some of my more dreaded dogs today, they are really sweet, but so hard to do. One Schnauzer that is 16 years old & I have to go extra slow with her & her housemate is one of those new designer breeds, a Labradoodle. Big & Dumb! MDC, we had a drive-in movie in my small hometown and went to the movies nearly every weekend in the summer....and we did sweat, too! The movie was always out of focus, too dark to see and usually a "B" movie but we loved going. When my sister and I were little, Mom would bathe us, put our pj's on and give us pillows for the back seat and we would be off to the drive-in to see Clint Eastwood or some other old western. We would buy these things called PICS that looked like a green coil that you lit and it burned slowly, letting off a putrid smoke that was supposed to repel mosquitos (anyone remember those??). Must have been really healthy to breathe.
MDC, did you ever play Murder In The Dark? Its kind of like Marco Polo in a dark room.
I won't be buying season 6 anytime soon but eventually. I only have seasons 1-3 at this point.
Buckeye, if I was living in Mayberry I would share the job of county nurse with Ro. I would love to give Barney his Tet@nus shot.
A Labradoodle?? How wierd. Does it look like a Lab or a poodle?

Sounds like my childhood was much the same as a lot of yours. Before we moved to Idaho, I lived in Chino Valley, Arizona, and I believe the population was about 500 way back then. We lived on a farm and us kids sold veggies at a roadside stand. And like Boo, I remember making mud pies, along the edge of the ditch. Those were the days. To make ends meet, besides being a farmer, my dad was the school bus driver. Boy, was I proud. I got to stay on the bus til the end of the route, because I got to go home with the driver!
