You remember that picture of an iris that I posted in the album? Well, I'm now looking at bloom #5, on the same stalk! As each bloom fades, another opens. I've got sequential pictures, and will be putting them in the album. I'm just fascinated! I didn't know an iris would do that. The key was to cut it off right at the ground, so there was a nice long stalk for the buds to draw nourishment from. A good friend told me that, I never knew it before. I'd have cut about a six inch stalk, it would have faded in a day, and been all done.
Our temperature was upper 80's yesterday, and I had the a/c on. Woke up about 3a.m. freezing, with the Plum trying to crawl under me to get warm. The temp had dropped into low 30's outside and it was 60 in the house! Only in Texas.
Well, got things to do. We're supposed to get ice tonight, so I'd better make a grocery store run. I do not drive on ice! Have a great day, folks, and a big welcome to YMK! Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Hey friends, hope your having a good night.
Been a rough one for me. It was one year ago tonight that my Dad passed away. Hardly seems possible it's been a year already. I went down to his house (I guess it's my house now in the midst of remodeling) and just sat there in the room where he was and offered up a little prayer. His passing was so very peaceful, and taught me much. Seems he was always teaching me, even in death. I miss him much, but I know he is well and in a better place. Thanks for letting me vent a little here. Typing it out for my Mayberry friends is helpful.

Asa the last thing my father and I did together was watch an episode of Andy Griffith. It was the one where Barney comes back and meets Thelma Lou at the reunion, only to discover she's married.
When the episode ended, my dad got up, shook his head and said, "I don't like those sad ones. I like the ones with a happy ending."
That was the last time I saw him or spoke to him. He died the next morning from insulin shock. He was a diabetic.
That was 21 years ago. I will always treasure the last time we spent together...watching Andy Griffith.
The bad news is, you will never get over his passing. The good news is, it will get easier.
Take care and God Bless.

Oh, my goodness, Asa. Has it really been a year? Time seems to just fly by at times, and other times it seems it doesn't even move. Prayers for you, friend. I understand. I now have my parents' home, and have it leased. I use a leasing service, so I don't have to go in the house. I think it would break my heart to see somebody else's stuff where my mother's pretty things were. I do drive past it now and then, and it appears to be well cared for, and the realtor has been inside. She says it's nicely kept, but I don't think I could bear to go inside.
It is cold, cold, cold here! Brrrr! I went outside to put out critter feed, and thought I was going to freeze. All my goldfish are huddled in a little orange herd right beneath the waterfall that circulates back into the pond. I'm not sure why, but they like to hang out there, especially when it's cold. I put a big cardboard box over the irises that are trying to bloom. I hope they make it.
I think I've figured out why those particular irises are blooming. They're planted right next to a large, flat boulder. I think it absorbs heat from the sun, and radiates it back into the soil at night, so the soil is warm and the plants think it's spring! Does that make sense? I have a few other irises around the yard, and none of them are trying to bloom.
The Plum has tugged on my robe, I think she wants to go to bed, and needs me to make a warm spot for her. She always snuggles next to me, but if I get up, she immediately moves over and occupies my place. Then I have to make her move over, and she usually gives me her little protesting growl. No threat, just backtalk. Spoiled little thing. Mavis, I know exactly what you're dealing with.
Have a lovely weekend, everyone. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

David, you're absolutely right. You don't get over it. I've lost my husband and both parents and a grandchild, and you don't get over it. There's no way. I would modify only one thing that you said. I think it doesn't get easier, it just gets less hard. I'm not sure what the difference is, but there is one. You learn to cope, and one day you realize that you're not so much looking back on the past, but rather you're looking forward, to the future when you'll see them again. Dear Lord! There is so much comfort in that. --Romeena

I wish we could keep it, but the bills have got to be paid, her hospital alone was over $78,000 & she had 3 other loans, no other choice but to sell her house, the bills are about to kill me. I volunteer for the local organ donation association here. It has helped me so much doing that. Last fall race here I worked a booth at Food City Family Race night & met some really wonderful people! I also volunteer for a local spay/neuter program that pays for spays/neuters for dogs & cats that the owners can't afford to have done. Makes me feel good & useful. One more thing and I'll shut up.
I just watched the episode "Andy and Helen Have Their Day". The game and fish agent that asked Andy for his fishing liscense is the VOICE at the beginning of every show.
"The Andy Griffith Show, starring Andy Griffith. Co-starring Ronny Howard.....and Don Knots"
When I saw the guy and he spoke, I thought it sounded familiar. That's him. Pretty cool.

Morning porch.
Thank you friends for your thoughts, kind words and prayers. You folks are the best group of people ever. It makes the hard times easier to deal with, and the good times even more enjoyable when sharing them with folks like you.
David, that story about your Dad was very touching. Thanks for sharing it. Are you new to the porch? If so, welcome.
Anyway, thanks again friends. I hope I didn't bring the spirit of the porch down.
Chuck, you are right about the fish fuzz being the fellow who does the intro on every show. Here's another tidbit you may already know. The fellow who played Jubal Foster (the episode where his barn burns down I forget his real name) was the same fellow who wrote the lyrics to the opening theme song "The fishing hole". It was either the song or the lyrics he wrote, but I think it was the lyrics. Can someone help me out on this?

Spot, I don't know what I did that's "cool", but thanks for the compliment. You're a pretty fine canine yourself.
Ole Buckeye, you're always a bright spot. Life experience shines through the things you say. Age does have its rewards, doesn't it? I think I'm a bit older than you, so I feel free to make age references. I'm probably the oldest one here. Born 7/39? How does that stack up?
Chuck, that's an interesting fact about the announcer and the fish cop being the same person. I surely didn't know that. See, you learn something every day. I think I did know about Jubal writing the lyrics for the theme song, though not sure how I knew.
Mavis, if the Plum is gonna ride with Feather in the race, here's a suggestion. Let the Plum drive, and hang a bag of carrots from a pole off the front end of the car, and I can guarantee you a win! Tell Feather to just put on her helmet, strap herself in and hang on!
Well, I'm about to attack this messy house. Too cold to do anything outside, though that's where I'd much rather be. Still, things need to be done in here, too, so I'd better get at it. Wonder if Olive would want to come over and help me when she finishes at the diner? I'd pay $1.25 an hour - that's pretty good money, you know.

Well, here I am, sittin' at my window instead of cleaning house, but who cares? I've putout critter feed twice, and the cold, hungry little things just keep coming in for chow. Three kinds of doves, pigeons, a woodpecker, bluejays, sparrows, starlings, and of course, squirrels. Little Round Belly is looking pretty ripe. I put some torn-up towel strips out, in case she wants to reinforce her nest, but so far she hasn't taken them. She's in one of my squirrel boxes, so there's no telling how much leaf-litter and stuff she's got in there already.
Mavis, the Plum says she'll be happy to share, and that Feather can have the big carrots, she prefers the little ones. Guess we'll have to hang two bags on that pole on the race car.
Woohoo! I'm going to East Buffet with friends tonight, to eat boiled shrimp and crab legs! $8.99 for all you can eat. Can't beat that, and the food is good. They have a regular Chinese buffet as well, lots of stuff to choose from and it's all good. I haven't eaten anything but a small muffin all day, saving up room for tonight!

My dear, dear friends (I am giving you all a great big hug right now), you are such wonderful individuals. Have not yet read the archives but have already cried over the current posts. How healthy and healing it is to come together here and share our hurts and triumphs! Also so happy to see the new faces on the porch.
I have been without a computer for a few weeks but should be seeing you more now. We have also been very busy getting things ready for the house (as SPOT so kindly mentioned must be the case). We have roughly cleared the five acres but now have to go in there and decide what to keep. The land was covered with bruch and lots of oak trees, the problem is that most of them are small and not many large ones. I have only been able to find one other species of tree on it and have no clue what it is. It has rather long leaves and some kind of purple berries that resemble China berries?? Any guesses out there? Anyway, we have decided on a homeplanner to do the plans but have not decided on on builder. Bruce is seriously considering being his own builder. We have been talking to lots of people and looking at the work of different builders and sub-contractors...we'll see. I have determined that we can build a much nicer house if we do it ourselves, but...can we survive the stress??!
It is pretty cold here (30-something) and drizzly..almost looks like it did when it snowed here in 2004.
I think I will try to read some of the archives. Ya'll have a great evening, and stay warm!

Asa Yep, them Cartwrights are something else! I like Gunsmoke too, it comes on tomorrow. Can't find the Rifleman anywhere on my tv, but I watch westerns every chance I get. I know, most women don't like 'em, but I ain't like most women. LOL
Gotta go find me a snack that will feed me & all my furkids. Hey Buckeye thanks for signing my guestbook on my website! ;)

February 18, 2006 - Msg 34140:
Wow! Boo, it's great to hear from you. Figured the house was taking up your time. I hear you on being your own builder, but be aware - that's a mine field. My dad was a homebuilder, and I know what he went through with his subs at times, even knowing what he knew. For someone not steeped in the business, it can be a very slippery slope. If you can find competent, reliable subs, you can do it. Therein lies the rub. It took him about four years to build up a team he could depend on, and then it was easy. Five whole acres! My, how I envy you. As for that tree, if it's bearing berries, I'd be tempted to leave it alone. It may be important in the food chain for the local critters. Break off a small branch and take it to a local nursery, to see if they can ID it.
Yep, Mavis, the Plum's silky hair graces many a bird and squirrel nest around here. When the tree trimmers knocked that squirrel house off the tree last year, with all the baby squirrels in it, there was Sugarplum hair mixed in with the leaves and rags. Also about twenty feet of Christmas garland, but that was no surprise. I had watched the squirrel haul it in there. You'd be surprised what I see from this window.
Also, I'm right there with you on "Gunsmoke" and "Bonanza" - two of my favorite shows. I love the weekends, when those shows are on all day. I used to have crushes on Little Joe and Adam, but the older I get, the better Ben looks!
I am so full of shrimp and crab legs I can barely wiggle, but boy, was it good! I went by the store on the way home and bought what I need for the next few days, and I plan to play hooky in the morning and stay home. Our pastor isn't preaching, it's a youth-focus Sunday, and since I don't have any kids or grandkids at my church anymore, and they're predicting icy roads in the morning, this old gal is going to stay home. I think the Lord will understand.
Well, gotta go feed and then snuggle the Plum. She's making rather pointed little forays into this room every couple of minutes. Who says dogs can't talk? I understand every word she doesn't say.

I'm with you on "Gunsmoke". I love to watch that. Now, Bonanza is another story entirely. It's a little too corny for me (no offence to the Bonanza lovers). I also like "The Riffleman", but it's not on any of my channels currently. I wish they would show "The Lone Ranger", or any of the Roy Rogers stuff. For a while they were showing those, but it's off the Western channels schedule at this time.

Hey to Mavis, SPOT and Ro! Romeena, you made me laugh at that mental picture of the Christmas garland and the thing about Ben was pretty funny, too because its true, isn't it? I just can't get into the real young guys anymore. They remind me too much of my nephews. The best ones are 40 and up.
