If ya all like small towns, like Mayberry, then you would like Ada, OK. It's now about 15,000 pop these days, but back in the 60's it was maybe 1000 give or take the few old crabs who would wander through. heehee It is a few hundred miles east of Fort Sill, I believe. It was one of those towns where everyone knew everyone, so if there WERE any spies, etc, or hanky panky, believe me, we'd KNOW it! It's where your mom would get a call saying, "Hey, guess what I saw your daughter doing!" I guess, as I look back, it was a good thing. We kept in line, Bible belt and all that, and realize that the discipline was a good thing! Maybe that's why I could watch the reruns of tags forever. Some of the so-called funny things on tags ACTUALLY happened in Ada! teehee Well, I went on enough. Will try to stop back later. Hope Dixie's teaching is going well. I'm a retired school teacher.

So sad about the little two-year-old who suffered the dog attack. The situation inspires a lot of questions. The most obvious one, of course, is why the child was allowed near a dog that has to be kept chained up. Some adult wasn't very alert. The next question, in my mind at least, is what on earth does someone want with a dog that has to be kept on a chain? Not a very happy life for the dog, risks and dangers everywhere, not much of a loving relationship for the humans involved to enjoy - what's the point? I just don't get it. Seems like such a waste, and now this poor little kid pays the consequences.
I have new neighbors - just bought the house next door and are still getting settled. I knew they have two dogs, a chow mix and a pit bull, but I hadn't seen them. Saturday afternoon, I opened my garage door to go out front, and was confronted by a huge white pit bull, standing on my driveway, about six feet from me. She didn't growl, just stood there and stared me down, then proceeded to stroll into the garage, sniff around, investigate the trash can, and then went back out. She didn't offer any particular threat, but she was not intimidated by my presence, either. I was silently thanking God that my grandson was in the house, involved in watching "Ice Age."
I've been assured by the owner that the dog is a "big old sweetheart," and perhaps she is. Still, I'd prefer not to have her ambling around in my garage. I plan to let the owner know, as kindly as possible, that the leash law is enforced in our town, and that if she continues to let her dog run loose, someone will report it. It won't be me. That's not my style. I'll talk to the owner first, every time, but there are at least two people on this street who will call the pound in a heartbeat. I'd hate to see that happen, because the dog probably is just fine, but her owners need to keep her at home. Their yard is fenced, for pete's sake! Just keep her home and all of us paranoid small-dog people will be happy.

Hey to everybody this cool Thursday morning! Wanted to tell you something kinda pretty I saw this morning. Of couse, precious little birds are always a welcome sight, but this morning, while I was waiting on a trolley to take me to my office, I sat in the parking lot and noticed a bird that landed on a sign very near the car. It was singing and having the best time (so was I, listening to it!). I then noticed that where it was so cold outside, you could see "steam" coming from its little mouth as it sang. Coming from that little bird, it just somehow seemed so sweet
Thanks for the help, Asa! I didn't know that if I answered the Jeopardy question, I was supposed to ask the next one. See? I need ya! :-)
Hmmmm......let's see......okay......When cousin Virgil came to visit Barney, where did he catch the bus that was supposed to bring him into Mayberry, before he got off to buy a postcard?

Just read the archives - the first set of triplets were all does (girls for you non-goaters), then a set of twin bucks (boys), then a single doe, and then two does and a buck. The boys and the mixed triplets are what we call colored boer goats - the boys are red and and the triplets are black/black/white. Most boers you see are traditional - red (brown) head with a white body. I have never been too traditional in my life but we really like the colored goats. They also bring more money when it comes to selling them. So that is a total of 9 kids in three days - 9 more does left to kid within the next couple of weeks.
By the way - only two are named so far: Sunny's Sparkle and Deysi Duke (Duchess).

Bulbsnatcher, I've had the privilege of seeing the little frosty bird breath only once, and you're quite right, it's just about the cutest thing ever. Did you notice how it comes out in little twists and curls and sort of broken dashes, as the little fellow shapes his notes? Precious!
Thanks for the caution, MDC. I'm on it. I have no plans to have any contact with that dog, but I definitely will caution the owner if it comes outside again. Seriously, there are people on this street that will report a loose dog at first sight, and I would hate for that to happen. My neighbor loves her dog, I'm sure, and I understand that, so I'd hate to see it get picked up. We do have a no-kill shelter here, but when animal control picks up a stray, that's not where they take them. Personally, I don't care if my neighbor has a wolverine, as long as she keeps it in her back yard or in the house. It was just a bit unnerving to open my garage and see that dog just a few feet away, staring at me as bold as brass, but I still wouldn't turn it in. As I said, I'll confront the owner directly. As for the Plum, she never goes outside, so there's no danger to her.
homemaker, congratulations on all the kids. I know how cute baby goats are, so would love to have some pictures to put on the website. Baby goats are adorable!

Bulbsnatcher-Our family enjoys them little birds also, especially in the winter. When we fill up the bird feeders this time of year, the little ones always stay close by. You feel like you could just reach out and touch them.

I may get in a bit of trouble for such a long story, but I like to read a magazine called "Reminisce"......lots of great stuff in there! While I was looking at the November/December 2005 issue, I ran across one of the sweetest stories I've ever read, and I hve to share it with all of you. Please forgive this long post, but I honestly think it's worth it.
The author's name is Mary Kutz from Lyndhurst, New Jersey, and she had written in to tell readers about a particularly memorable Christmas in her life.
Here it is:
Christmas during WWII was a scary time. Everything from food to clothing was rationed, and Christmas trees were expensive and hard to come by.
Christmas in 1942 was one of the coldest ever, with snow falling the day before. It was beautiful around our home in Jersey City, New Jersey, but extremely cold.
My father and uncle were home on leave from the Army, and we were very happy to have family together during wartime. My mother had deserted my sister and me as babies, so we were living with my grandmother, an uncle and two aunts.
Our childhood was great, as we grew p in a home with lots of love. We called our grandmother "Mom" since she was more like a mother to us.
On this Christmas Eve, I was 12, and my sister, Jean, was 10. We overheard a conversation coming from the kitchen saying how there were no Christmas trees to be found.
I looked at my sister and thought to myself, Where would Santa put our presents if there was no tree?
Jean and I just looked at each other and felt sad. Our family tried to make us happy and make sure we had no worries about the war, but in our days, Santa was real.
The conversation among the adults ended with my father saying, "My girls will have a tree by hook or by crook." We didn't know what "hook or crook" meant, but we went to bed happy.
In the morning, when Jean and I awoke, we ran to see if Santa left us presents. Lo and behold, in our living room stood a 6-foot tree, beautifully decorated with a large star that sat on top and presents underneath.
We screamed with delight, looking for our names on the presents.
I thought to myself that Santa had to be the one who brought our tree and the presents.
Then I noticed my father's face and saw tears in his eyes, which I am sure were tears of happiness.
Years later, our aunt told us how the tree came into our home.
After we were asleep, my father left the house and walked for miles in the cold and snow. He saw men selling Christmas trees on a street corner and asked if he could have the fallen branches.
He gathered up the branches - there were so many that he looked like a walking Christmas tree himself. He also found a large broom handle.
Back at home, he used a screwdriver, hammer, ice pick, and nails to make his girls a tree. He made 40 holes and stuck in all the branches he had, then secured it.
A tree was born!
We were told he finished the tree just an hour before we awoke. He worked on the tree all night, so I called it a "love tree."
Now...I know that only God can make a tree, but I believe that He helped my father make one that year.
Best wishes to all Bulbsnatcher

Nice story, BULBSNATCHER. Speaking of Christmas 1942, have you ever seen the movie "Since You Went Away" with Claudette Colbert, Jennifer Jones, Van Johnson, Agnes Moorhead and Shirley Temple? The story is a year in the life of a family during WWII (Claudette Colbert is the wife; you don't see the husband as the movie begins with him having just left for the war and ends with his return) and Christmas 1942 plays a big part in it. It won the best picture Oscar the following year. Great story, great acting, great message--great movie. Not your typical "war" movie. They play it (usually around Christmas) on TCM. It occasionally pops up at other times as well.
Bigfoot! I was a kid in the early and middle 1970s when Bigfoot sightings were all the craze. Deep down, I knew they were a hoax, but my friends and I had a grand time convincing ourselves they were true and going out in the woods and hunting for footprints. Gosh, pleasant memories.
SPOT: My wife and I bought my grandmother's house some years ago. My dad was raised there. It's worked out for us and her; we have a great old house with a lot of memories and a few acres and she lives in a small efficiency attached to the place she spent so many years. I love the house, but, at 120 years old, we have had our share (and several other people's) of troubles with it. It's still a work in progress. Anybody see "The Money Pit?" Ha!
Actually, that reminded me of my favorite movie of all time (while I'm recommending movies): "Mr. Blanding's Builds His Dream House" with Cary Grant and Myrna Loy. Wonderful funny flick!
Well, breaks over--"Time to make the donuts" as they say.

Hi, Mack, pull up a rocker and set a spell. You won't find a nicer place to kick back and rest a while.
Our city - Irving, TX - has entered into a "sister city" relationship with Darkhan, the town in Mongolia where we stay when we make our mission trips over there. The formal declaration and signing was tonight, with dignitaries from Mongolia present. It was so nice, and they're such charming people. Lovely.
Well, I'm tired, think I'll turn in early tonight for a change. Have to go up to the hospital tomorrow for a "skills lab" that the Joint Commission requires us to undergo periodically. We have to answer a bunch of dumb questions and demonstrate that we know how to do the things we do all the time in the performance of our jobs. Trust me, if I didn't know how to do those things, I would have been fired years ago, but we have to make JCAHO happy. It's called paper compliance.

speaking of the good old days we talk about, there is both the upside and the downside of it. take 1953- upside; a loaf of bread was 16 cents, car gas arond 18 to 20 cents a gallon. few homes had tv's yet and utilities ran 10 dollars a mmonth or so. you still good get a good car for $1oo.oo or less. downside; well the supper bowl was still 12 years away and the andy griffith show was still 7 years away. rock on porchsters. ky girl- remember; that person is so green that if they fell down the would grow right there, breakfast- donuts, english muffins, eggs, orange juice, coffee, country ham, fried taters with onions and peppers in them. buckeye

Bulbsie, I'll second Buckeye's comment. If I don't know the answer, which is most of the time, I just lay low and wait, preferring not to reveal my ignorance. Speaking of "Jeopardy", that game gives me a rash anyway. I never did get the point of framing the answer as a question, and making the question the answer, or however it goes. (Example: Q. What is 30 mph? A: The normal speed limit in most cities.) Makes no sense to me.
Asa, I'm very close to Texas Stadium. Close enough that game day traffic is a big pain in the derriere. Now that the Cowboys are moving to Arlington, no one knows what's going to happen to the stadium. Lots of ideas, but nothing that looks very promising as yet. Arlington is so pleased, but I'm thinking - just wait until Jerry Jones and company get there and start telling them how to run their town. He's so annoying. Came in here, treated our revered Tom Landry like dirt, started referring to the Cowboy Cheerleaders as "my girls", and the stadium as "my stadium, and then wondered why Texans didn't like him. So he hired a New York PR firm to try to improve his image! In my opinion, he's a total waste of space. "Get a rope!"
It's cold here today. Cloudy, dreary, mid-40's. Let's all sing good old 14A, real loud, and maybe Spring will hear it and decide to get here early. All together now - Welcome, sweet Springtime, we greet thee in so-o-o-ng! Louder, please!

buckeye-I agree with you 110% about the "good old days." While the good old days were most certainly good, I loved them, but I love these days also. God has blessed me with 2 beautiful daughters in recent years. I haven't seen my Dad since 1979 and I can't wait to see him again and I KNOW I will. But, everyday is a blessing. I know that's not a news flash to you good folks. Like the old song says ...."these are the good old days."
MDC-I missed your post about John Adams. No, I didn't see the show you mentioned but I am reading a book about Adams "The Politics of Enlightenment." I think Adams as well as Alexander Hamilton deserve a lot more credit than they are usually given when the Founding Fathers are discussed.
Romeena-I'll second your second concerning the Jeopardy questions. I'll defer to the adage, "it is far better to keep ones mouth closed and appear stupid than it is to open it and remove all doubt," <<< Saw that on M*A*S*H.

I thought I was going to have to APB again! ha
Buckeye, now I'm still confused. What kind of buckeyes DO you collect? Old Ohio State players? haha
Auh20, the program on John Adams was VERY interesting. Apparently he was a chubby little man who was often ostricized by his colleagues (no different than what happens today sometimes I guess)but it was HIS statement, even more than Patrick Henry's "Give me liberty or give me death", that got the continnetal congress moving toward war. He said, "We must fight, we cannot negotiate with the British any more, for they do not negotiate in good faith." Pretty powerful words. And he is actually the one who drafted the CONST1TUTION! All his wording except for a few last minute changes and the amendments of course.
Ok, history lesson over for the day! The truth comes out, sorta like the Battle of Mayberry! haha
RO- It's the same with the Cardinals' Bill Bidwell here! ha They build a new stadium with county tax money and he calls it HIS stadium!
ASA- we sure need the rain, but I'd hate to get "klinger" and his gypsies involved! ha That's worse than an upside down owl!! Maybe i could get Banjo Jerry to do his circus act! haha
Well have a good day, lunch is on Spot!

Ada was one of those true "heartland" towns, a great place to grow up in years ago. Today it has problems like any other place , byt was definitely Mayberryesque in the 60s. Asa, i think you are the asa at Miss Crump's board. I saw the posts about the actor in Barney's visiting cousin episode, and i think it was just bad casting. That is one ep that just doesnt "do it" for me. They didnt get the "right" fit for his role. That is just my humble opinion!
OK girl, sounds like your childhood was magnificent! I grew up in Phoenix area, but even there, in the 60s, it didnt have that "big city" feel like it is today. I've eaten way yonder too much today. My friend wanted to go to lunch, so we went to Olive Garden, kinda late, ate around 1:30. Then we ran errands and I got home about 5:30, to find a message from another friend, wanting to go out to eat! We ended up at Don Pablo's (Mexican, of course) and I ate dinner there. I told my friend I felt like I'd just eaten three spaghetti dinners, and she just looked at me like a duck looking at thunder. She had no idea what I was talking about.
I always sorta wondered about the casting of Michael Pollard as Cousin Virgil. I had previously seen him as an albino boy on some distant planet in an old "Star Trek" episode. He was weird in that one, too.

Chuck, Barney wasn't 'measuring' the cars, he was "Chalkin' the tires". I think that in pre-parking meter days, this was how they determined if a car was over-parked. He would chalk their tires and if they were still sitting there when he came back by he would give them a parking ticket. Someone older than me might can verify or disprove this.
It was Mayor Stoner. S-T-O-N-E-R (as he told the governor).
January 28, 2006 - Msg 33286:
Yep, he was chalking the tires, and I do remember when this was done. I'm older'n dirt, you know. However, it was done well into the parking peter days, when most cities couldn't afford to put them anywhere but on Main Street, or in some smaller towns who chose not to clutter their streets with the meters. I've always thought that rows of parking meters looked a bit tacky, myself. Also, sometimes those "mean boys that lived in the town" would walk by and hit the meter, which would often cause the needle to drop when you actually had a few more minutes, thereby causing the driver to get a parking ticket. Yes, there were useless people even back then.
SPOT, what did I do that was "birdie"? By the way, I have a question. When a word at the end of a sentence is placed in quotes, does the punctuation mark go inside or outside of the quotes? My personal feeling is that it goes outside when it's just a word or two in quotes, but inside if the quotes apply to the whole sen-tence. Anybody know for sure? I even asked my English teacher daughter, and found that she disagrees with me, but I'm still not sure that she knows. After all, I remember when she was three and spilled her milk at every meal. Where's Miss Crump? Let's ask her.
It's raining! It's raining! It rained quite a bit during the night, obviously, because all my birdbaths are overflowing, and it's raining a steady drizzle right now, the kind that soaks in well and does a lot of good. Thank you, Lord!
Gotta go feed the critters. Wet, bedraggled squirrels everywhere, birds huddled on branches, all looking forlorn. Poor guys. I've got some slightly stale shelled pecans and a big bag of pork rinds that a friend gave me, and some stale bagels. The critters will be thrilled!
Have a great day. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

There are times when I have been unable to get on here for a day or two and then get to scanning the posts, and there are lots I'd like to respond to, but time constraints and sometimes the length of time since the original post was made makes it unpractical. So I just don't respond. Don't mean we don't love each of you.
Romeena, I have always wondered about that same thing about punctuation marks but was to scared to ask. I figured I was a feared everyone would laugh at me. Isn't it funny how you can be wondering about something and wanting ot ask a question, but your afraid to cause you don't wanna seem dumb, and finally somebody else asks the very question, and then several others will then chime in. Then you realise that your question wasn't so dumb after all.
I don't remember the chalking of tires, but I remember folks talking about them doing it. I imagine they could also be measuring to see how close you parked to the curb. I imagine there are obscure laws out there saying you cannot be to far away or you could get a ticket for that. Then of course Barney in one episode was measuring (using his feet) to see if a truck was parked to close to a fire hydrant. I think that was the quiet Sam episode. Just about had him too.
Bulbsnatcher, I can't come up with an answer so you're gonna have to tell us.
Hey Chuck, you got all my jobs right except in later life I changed my name, went back to school and got my medical degree and became a noted physician, also known as Doc Roberts. Happy Saturday! i should be out in the yard and I guess I'll head out there directly.
ROmeena, as a retired English teacher, I can tell you that the comma should almost always go INside the quotation marks, if it is indeed a direct quote; but if you have one word in quotes that ends a sentence, that isnt really a quotation, such as, our little kitty is quite a "doggy"! you can put the punctuation OUTside it. There are now a lot of online grammar sites if you want to check it out further, but I have "red-inked" many a paper over such things! haha
Charlotte, ou resident editor, may have some input too.
Good you got RAIN! We still need it. 101 days now!!
Quick funny story, in the 40's when my dad worked in downtown Mpls, he parked in a two hour zone and would go out on breaks and lunch and rub off the chalk mark, or move up just a tad if it was on the asphalt. In 5 years he only got one ticket!
