I sure started a moulage about dogs, didn't I? Wow! I got some really strong opinions because dogs are something very close to your hearts. I have to admit that I don't fully understand it. I love animals but have always felt that dogs are dogs (except for Sugarplum, of course) and people are people and there is a difference. I don't beleive the well-being of animals should come before people. Its funny because I have done some pretty crazy things to rescue animals and never, ever will stand for their mistreatment (I have great pity for them) but the emotional connection that some pet owners have with there dogs has never been there for me. Kind of strange, I guess. I just can't seem to bond with animals like I do people. I think I came close with a cat once. Mavis, I love ya but I had a friend who had a pitbull that was a family pet and seemed very gentle. When my friend's little girl was a toddler, she was standing in front of the dog when it suddenly bit her face and litterally picked her up in mid-air by the face. It was a sudden, unprovoced attack and the poor child had a terrible time. I don't think, personally that it is wise to put a pitbull in the crib with an infant. Sorry to disagree, its just that animals can be unpredictable. Its not their fault, its just nature.

SPOT, I am trying to figure out a way to rig an extension cord long enough to reach down the street to plug in the TV. Your plan could certainly work....or better yet, we could make the dog watch a marathon of King of The Hill, or the Brady Bunch Christmas Special...that should do it.

January 13, 2006 - Msg 32833: Howdy, friends. Boo, I agree that the well-being of animals shouldn't come ahead of the well-being of people. Notice I said "well-being", not convenience, or even monetary gain. Training dogs to be vicious so people can make money betting on the fights is immoral. As for bonding, I know it's a phenomenon that doesn't happen for everyone. I can say with no hesitation, though, that had I been standing on the roadside in the aftermath of Katrina, Sugarplum would have been with me. If I was told that I could board the bus but she couldn't, then I'd have stayed put. No way on this green earth would I have abandoned that little thing and left her standing there. Ain't gonna happen.

About the organ donor question - one other thing you can do besides sign your license is to have it spelled out in your living will, which everyone should have. Not your estate will, but your living will, sometimes called "Directive to Physicians." I know you know this, Boo, being a nurse, but some others might not. By the way, a copy of your living will can be placed in a small, well-labeled plastic tube or jar and stored in your refrigerator. Many EMT's these days are trained to look there, because it's a central place and just about everyone has one. Also, regarding organ donation, tell your doctor, as chances are he or she would be notified if you were brought into an ER somewhere. You do have your doctor's name and phone number in your wallet, don't you?? Tell your family, too, so they won't have to make a decision, because the hospital staff will very likely approach them in the event of your demise. I chose to allow them to take my husband's corneas, though he had never said anything about it. I just knew that with his giving nature he would have wanted me to agree. Later I was notified that two people who had been blind now each have sight in one eye, thanks to my husband.

January 13, 2006 - Msg 32834: Right, "well-being" is the key word here. You know, come to think of it, I don't think I could have just left the Plum there, either, unless I had to go for my children's sake. That would be beyond horrible. I have seen that once people no longer have children at home they seem to become very attached to their pets. I saw that happen with my Dad. He used to have nothing to do with dogs but now he treats them better than anyone else in the family! They have to have special food, etc. He doesn't like to give them dogfood, only people food. He goes a little overboard sometimes, though. I had some real issues with him when Erin was a baby because when she first started walking and we would come to his house, his dog would jump on her and knock her down all the time so I asked if we could put the dog outside when we come over. He told me in no uncertain terms that the dog belonged there and he wouldn't make her leave her own house. That is the kind of think I don't like. That is what I mean about putting a dog's well-being above a person's. The dog was hurting and scaring Erin and I didn't like it a bit.

Boo how sad for that little girl who was bitten, she will probably have a fear of dogs now, but I would never had allowed ANY of my dogs in my son's crib it I didn't trust them completely. I have a Chihuahua here, that has to be put in another room when kids come over, she hates them, I wouldn't trust her with a kid at all, but Marilyn, never worried one time about her, Pit Bull or not. And about the organ donation, here in VA. having it on your driver's license will override anything the family wants. If Linda & I said no, we don't want you to take her organs, they would have anyway, because Mom had it on her license. Her liver, both kidneys, both corneas & tissue, marrow & her heart were all transplanted. Lots of people have much fuller lives today because of it. Be sure your family knows, like Ro said.

Nothing can erase that. Someday, you'll find another companion. Check out the shelters - some little four-footed trucker will catch your eye. Somewhere, there's a furkid who needs you as much as you need him (or her.) And don't overlook the little ones. My husband only drove a pickup around town, no big rigs, but he was a very big man, and our Sugarplum was his constant companion. Quite a sight, the 6'4", 280 lb man with the 9 lb ball of white fluff perched on his shoulders, in the cab of that truck. Nobody laughed, though, you can bet on that!

If your rates compare to the rates around here, at least for small dogs, then I'd say the customer would come out ahead with the $5. For the Plum, 10% would only net me 2.50. Incidentally, Sugar's vet offers a 5.00 discount on the next visit for all referrals I send him.

Whooeee! I'm full of shrimp and crab legs. There's a Chinese buffet here that has both on their line on Friday and Saturday nights, and only 8.99 for all you can eat. No snails, and I'm glad, but mercy, can I eat a lot of boiled shrimp and crab legs. Love 'em both! My hands smell terrible, but my tummy is happy!

The only dog that ever bit me was a Chihuahua, which reminds me of a wonderful episode of Leave It to Beaver when Beaver finds a Chihuahua and is hiding it in his room so he can keep it. Of course Wally discovers the dog and tells Beaver it's a Mexican Hairless breed. Later when his parents discover the dog and are questioning Beaver about it, June asks, "I wonder what kind of dog it is?", and Beaver says, "Wally said it's a naked Mexican". So funny!

Do any of you have Rat Terriers? I think they are really cute and nice small dogs...very active, though.

January 14, 2006 - Msg 32861: Thanks for the compliments about my kids - our house is on a little over an acre of land but our real farm or our pasture is about 23 acres (give or take) and that is where we hope to build this year. We are also hoping to aquire a 40 acre farm that my siblings and I jointly. I already own about 1/2 of it - just need to acquire the rest. We have about 30 goats but have 12 due to kid here in the next couple of weeks and they are in our kidding barn here and then they will transfer out to the big pasture in a couple of weeks after they are born. Our goal is 100 breeding does - we sell them for meat, for show and for breeding livestock. My oldest will show this year in open class and 4-H.

Went out to eat at the Outback Steakhouse tonight. its the first time we had been. Pretty good but the place was so loud. My husband is hearing impaired and wears hearing aids so we try to pick quiet places to eat because those hearing aids pick up all the background noise and amplify it and he can't hear normal conversation well. He really needs a new pair soon. They are very expensive but he has to have them. He only has about 2% of his hearing without the hearing aids. He actually went deaf in college...heriditary thing. His mother got cochlear implants that are working very well for her so I think that will be in Bruce's future. Sean has been complaining lately about not hearing well and that is concerning me. All the kid needs is something else to deal with.

You too Spot. I was checking out some of the pics on Ro's web site. Looks like some red colored soil you have there. Reminds me a lot of southern Utah and it's red rock areas. Looks very pretty when it gets a dusting of snow on it.

Boo, I know what you mean about Outback. They serve a pretty decent steak, and I love them blooming onions, but man it is so noisey in there you can't carry on a conversation. Luckily we have a great steakhouse in a nearby town that has a very quiet and low key atmosphere. Plus they have the best steak, prime rib and seafood anywhere around. So we go there often. It's called the Timbermine and is a replica of being in a gold mine back in the 1800'S. Has the booths set up to be like little mining wagons and a stream running through the middle of it. www.timbermine.com I think is their website. In fact I took New Nieghbor there a couple of years back when she brought her Daughter out here to go to school. I think she liked it.

Well goodbye Skins and Patriots. Two more good games on today I wanna see. But I should go to preachin....but I do have an itchy throat (cough cough) and the start of a headache. They are of me and my husband! He looks so happy, both of us just so pleased to be in each other's company. One was taken at our 25th wedding anniversary, and we're posed like we were at our wedding, feeding each other cake. The wedding picture is clearly visible in the background. Neat shot. He just looks wonderful. On, dear Lord, how I do miss that man!

January 15, 2006 - Msg 32872: Whew! I'm back in the house now, feeling better. Sure was a good time to work outside. I vented some of that emotion on some things that needed to be pruned back. Trust me, they don't need it anymore. In fact, they may never need it again!

Boo, I got your pictures yesterday. The Plum got to the mail before I did, and I thought she had ruined them. The packing envelope was shredded, but miraculously, the pictures are unharmed. Not a toothmark on them, but you should see the envelope. Actually, Itook a picture and will email it to you. I have nicknamed her "Shredderteeth", because she can make short work of the mail if I'm not in the house to catch her. She lurks by the mail slot, hoping to ambush the postman, whom she has never seen. She considers it a personal affront when that mail drops through the slot, and does her best to kill it before it can do us any harm. I have a crockery urn there to catch it, but it usually overshoots that and lands on the floor, and she nabs it. Little goofball.

Well, time for supper. Don't know what it'll be, don't really much care. A can of soup will do.

I hope you never have the opportunity to find out how much the support of friends can help. I'm fine, just had one of those melancholy moments, looking at those pictures of my husband, so strong and handsome. We don't have a lot of pictures of him, as he was very camera-shy, and managed to move aside and let others be in the pictures. He never had a studio portrait done, other than his high-school picture. A shame, he was very good-looking. Anyway, thanks, folks. At least I didn't sit here and fall apart, I went outside in the sunshine and dug and pruned and planted. Always makes me feel better.

Spot, I appreciate your encouragement on the photo site. By the way, we'd like to see Miss Sherry, if she's willing. And Otis! This started out as Porchsters' Pets, but has naturally extended into the families and all, which is nice. I got Boo's pictures, have to get them scanned into the computer, then I can post them, too.

Ha! I did much better than a bowl of soup last night. A friend called, and we went to Spring Creek and had their wonderful ribs and brisket. I even had a coupon and we both ate for the price of one. Good food at half-price - well, you just can't beat that. That place makes the best potato salad in the world, too, and great slaw. Do you all have a Spring Creek in your respective areas? I believe I'd rather have their ribs than a pork chop sandwich at the diner!

HM- If i built a boat, it would only be to haul some of that water HERE! We need rain so badly. We got a little bit and some wind yeaterday, but not much. It did help to clean uout our dirty air a bit.
Come to think of it, any boat that I would build probably wouldnt float!! haha

I have never seen a Spring Creek restraunt, sounds good.

Has been a real Monday Morning. My son's school has a strict dress code and they HAVE to wear kahky pants, polo shirt and tennis shoes. Sean got his shoes muddy yersterday and couldn't wear them (I forgot to wash them last night) so I had to send him to school in dress shoes and go buy him a pair of tennis shoes and bring them back to the school because if they are out of dress code in any way they have to sit in the principles office until mom fixes the problem..seems a little extreme but, whatever. Its a good school so I don't want to complain. We had such a hard time getting Sean out the door this morning I forgot to make his lunch, too and had to take that to the school! I don't know what's wrong with me, I don't ever forget his lunch. I am brainless today.

I am slow-cooking a roast on the stove today, Ro, the way you cook them. I did the last one that way and it was so much better than the crock pot or oven.

Asa, I would be happy to shovel your snow but it might take me awhile to get there, probably be melted by then. It's in the 70's here today but kind of humid.

Have the usual mountain of laundry to conquer so better get going....

January 16, 2006 - Msg 32886: Thanks, folks, for your kind concern. I do have my moments, but all in all, I've learned the difference between being alone and being lonely. Lonely is miserable, but being alone can have its own rewards. It took me a while, but I finally learned how to turn one into the other. I now cherish my solitude, and besides, I'm not really alone. God is with me. And then there's the Plum, and all the marvelous little creatures that God has sent to amuse me in my back yard.

I wish the whole world could sit here at this window and see the sights that present themselves to me every day. I just put out fresh feed, and there are three squirrels partaking already. I saw them in the trees, watching me, so knew they'd come down soon. One is perched on the bird feeder, digging his favorites out of the seed mix. Lots of seed going to the stones below, but the doves and pigeons, who can't perch on the feeder, will be here soon to clean up what he's dropping. Another one is pulling peanuts out of the tray feeder on the ground, and skittering all over the yard, planting them. Dig-dig-dig, then drop in the peanut, then push the dirt back and dance on it with the front feet. Finally pull a bit of grass or a leaf over it, and I promise you, you couldn't find where he buried it. The third one is running from one to the other, causing trouble. The whole time, they're just being as cute as anything can be. How on earth anyone could ever shoot one is beyond me. I know, I know, that doesn't make someone a bad person, but I still don't understand it. It would be like shooting a puppy.

I've always liked them, but having this window where I can observe them doing their little squirrelly thing all day long has really reinforced my feelings. They're just flat-dog cute! I know they can be destructive, but I just check my roof often, and if I see any signs of chewing or entry, I fix it. Also, I provide feed and shelter for them, so they have no need to try to get in the house, and generally don't.

Do you have OnStar in your Caddy? I have it on my new truck and actually used it the other day to call in a brush fire along the freeway.

Andy: There are no rules for pa's and sons. It's as simple as this: each mother or father raises his boy or girl, as the case may be, the way he thinks best. For instance, you get a quarter for cleaning the garage. Dont you feel good after doing that?

January 16, 2006 - Msg 32888: Exactillioso, MDC, that school can be pretty tough on the parents. The dress code is the biggest problem. We have to travel 80 miles to the only town that has the store that carries the uniforms that they HAVE to use and they are top-dollar, let me tell you. You can't just go down to WalMart and buy pants or shirts. Its funny because its a little country school. I don't get it.

Ro, I just adore squirrels, too. Always have. I grew up outside the city and we always had alot of them running around gathering acorns and dad was always trying to outsmart them to keep them out of the bird feeders. He would leave peanut butter sandwiches for them everyday but they still wouldn't leave the bird seed alone. Dad tried all sorts of things and they always won. He put the feeder way up on a pole and then greased the pole but the squirrels still managed to get up there by jumping from the trees. Once, just to tease them, he drilled a hole in a Walnut, thread part of a clotheshanger through it so it was hanging down from a tree limb so they couldn't reach the nut. We watched the squirrel finally swing the wire upward so he could get the nut. Dad tried it with string and they would bring get the nut by pulling it up by the string, hand over hand. So cute! They are amazing.

Better go check the roast and then get Sean from school.

Bruce is away on a hunting trip, "trying to ambush Bambi", as my dad always says.

January 16, 2006 - Msg 32890: Boo: We have to purchase uniforms for our daughter as well, but it sounds like we have it a whole lot easier. I forget the name of the company that they recommend, but whatever it's called, they are sold in Target and K-Mart/Sears. You can also order them. online. And they aren't real expensive (you can usually get shirts and skirts or jumpers for under $15). And, the school has a "gently used" consignment "store" (actually a couple of parent volunteers working out of storeroom one day a week) so that helps, too. I've got to say one thing, though, the cost of uniforms has definitely been offset by the savings on other clothes. It's also pretty good for dad's piece of mind to know that my daughter and her schoolmates are dressed appropriately and not the way I see a lot of kids heading off to school (if girls were allowed to dress that way when I went to school, I probably wouldn't have passed any classes!).

I haven't yet had a chance to check out the archives, so I'll offer prayers for everyone that needs them.

They are messing with our server/connections tomorrow, so in case I'm "off-line," have a great Tuesday, everyone!

January 16, 2006 - Msg 32892: Yep, MDC, I do have OnStar. I've used to a couple of times. Once I was over in Ft. Worth with a friend, trying to locate a retirement residence where my friend's husband was doing some consultant work, and he had left his briefcase at my house. He gave us general directions, at least got us to the right side of town, but the directions broke down after that. I just called OnStar, and started trying to tell them where I was. The lady on the line told me! She knew more than I did, said she was watching me on a map. I gave her the address I wanted, and she talked me straight to it. "Take the next left, go two blocks, then right on (street)" and so forth. Took us right to the door. Told me to call back if we needed help getting home. Pretty neat, really. Makes me feel safer when driving at night, especially.

Am home with an attack of vertigo today, guess I won't be going to work tonight. I'm okay as long as I don't make any sudden moves, but I'd be afraid to try to drive right now, also never know when a wave of dizziness or nausea will sweep over me. Got a prescription on the way, should be delivered shortly, should help.
