Goodness, Sterling! That could have really been bad. I mean, people lose control of their cars sometimes in a situation like that. I'm so thankful that all the damage was on the car. I hit a deer once, when I was about 19. It just suddenly shot across the road in front of me, nothing I could do, though I tried. The impact threw it up on the hood of the car, and all I could see was a rack of antlers, headed straight for the windshield. Fortunately, it glanced off the windshield, fell to the road, got up and staggered off into the woods. I got the ID number off a nearby power pole, and called the highway patrol from the next gas station (no cell phones back then), and told them which way it was headed into the woods. I can only hope they were able to find the poor thing. I know it was injured. It just breaks my heart to hit an animal. My car, being a '57 Ford Fairlane convertible and built like a tank, sustained very little damage, and I was completely unhurt, just scared and worried about the deer.
"Bumbles bounce!" That's my Christmas quote.

Thanks, Romeena!
Your deer incident sounds alot like mine, although the deer didn't have antlers and it didn't get up, even though it tried, poor thing.
You talked about people losing control of their cars sometimes when those things happen, and that's what other people have been telling me too. But for some reason I have always been able to be aware and think things through, even when things are happening in a blur of the moment. Like time slows down, and I see everything happening, which I guess is fortunate, but also unfortunate, as I can readily remember the details of the deer as it flew up on the hood - it's head coming inches from the windshield - and then was tossed back off.
I only wish I could have seen it before everything happened and stopped the car in time.

Asa, your quote is from the old curmudgeon, Ebenezer Scrooge, when he was approached by the men who asked him to contribute to a charity to feed the poor.
Guess I get to play electrician today. My pond pumps operate off a power line that is also carrying about 2/3 of my backyard Christmas lights at the present time. There is a GFCI on the circuit for safety, and it keeps tripping. My guess is that one of the extension connections to the groups of lighted deer is getting wet when the sprinklers come on, and tripping the GFCI. Even if the lights aren't on at the time (the sprinklers come on at 3 a.m.) it will still ground out. So, I guess I'll disconnect each set of deer one at a time to identify the group, then one deer at a time to identify the individual connection. Then, with any luck, a good raincoat of electrical tape should fix the problem. Gotta do something, because at the moment, there is no aeration on the pond.
A favorite special dish? Asparagus with a mock Hollandaise sauce, made with cream cheese, egg yolks and lemon juice. Yum!

I am an electrician Romeena and those GFI's can be very touchy. They detect a very small current leak to ground and trip out. Sometimes they can weaken though and give you nuisance trips. Just don't get fed up and plug into a non gfi protected plug. I see a lot of folks do that and it is dangerous.

Asa, it's one of my favorites as well. I've seen about all of the various productions, I guess, and have several on VHS or DVD. Even though they're all the same story, somehow they manage to be different at the same time, and each has its own charm. Just watched it with Reginald Owen as Scrooge - very good. Of course, Alistair Sim was the benchmark for curmudgeonliness (?), and he just looked like his hair and teeth would be dirty. Nasty old man. George C. Scott was a very elegant Scrooge, yet still chillingly mean and flint-hearted. What a classic.
Don't worry about me and that GFCI. I respect those things, and allow them to do their job. I wouldn't dream of bypassing it. Actually, I found the problem. As I suspected, water had gotten into a Christmas light connection. I disconnected it, dried it out, and have now covered it to prevent further problems. I can be patient and methodical when the situation calls for it.
Incidentally, friends, if you use those little power post connectors, or power stakes as some call them, I have a simple solution for keeping water out of them. After you plug your Christmas lights into them, put a small bucket over them! If you can find them in green, they almost disappear into the landscape, but any color will do, and won't be seen at night. I found some stakes this year that have their own very effective cover, but I have about ten from years past that do not, so the buckets work very well. I told the power posts to "have a think under there" when I put their buckets over their heads.
Well, guess I'll try to find a late lunch. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

If you felt unwelcome, I'm sorry, but I assure you our reaction to you had nothing to do with your religion. We didn't even know what your beliefs are. No one assumed you were Mormon just because you attend BYU, and for that matter, no one cares. We're a mixture of many things here, and no one is judged for their beliefs. I happen to be a Baptist, and no one holds it against me. Is there a particular reason why you're so sensitive, and assume that people are judging you when they're not? Perhaps you've had some bad experiences?
We be very happy for you to join us if you can lose your defensiveness, and just have fun along with us. If you can't do that, then perhaps you'd be happier somewhere else. As I said before, we'll wish you well as you go on your way, if that's what you choose to do. Tom, I am so sorry no one invited you over for dinner. Friends of mine, here in Michigan so a little too far for you to drive, always open up their coffee shop on Thanksgiving and invite any one who wishes to come, to share Thanksgiving with them. I usually have a few guests who had no where better to go, and coming to one of my dinners isn't necessarily a treat! ;) I hope the rest of the holidays are better for you Tom. How long ago did your father pass? My parents have both been gone for 8 years or more now.
Welcome to the porch Mack. I hope you will hang around long enough to get to know us. We may not be perfect, but we all long for a Mayberry-like world, so we can't be ALL bad!
I guess it's about time to say farewell to another Thanksgiving weekend, and I can honestly say, God has given my and mine so much to be thankful for. (Thanks God!)
Sterling, glad you are okay after your accident and I am sorry to hear you didn't get to see your side of the family for Thanksgiving. Maybe another opportunity will arise and you can see them before Christmas...One can only hope!
Have a wonderful Mayberry evening all!

Right Asa, my quote was from Christmas Vacation but not when they were getting a tree. Clark said it (under his breath) to Eddie when they were alone in the living room and Eddie was wearing that horrible dickie around his neck and telling Clark what his other children were doing (like barking for the Yak woman at the carnival).
Sterling, your quote was from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Not sure about yours, Ro but I thinks it was too.
Sorry about your deer experience, Sterling. That would have traumatized me, for sure.
ASA, I had forgotten that you were an electrician...now I have THAT to worry about! I heard some electricians give a talk at that agricultural fair I attended and it was scary. They showed us the gloves they wore when working on the lines and said that if there was so much as a pin hole in one, they would get electrocuted. Also told us to always make sure that we unplug extension cords before winding them up. One guy told of his best friend as a child who died from winding a cord that was plugged in! I now have a new respect for electricity and am even more careful.
I have to say I am rather glad the Thanksgiving weekend is over. I have had such a difficult time dealing with the children this week. I exploded on both my kids this weekend and said some things I wish I could take back. Kids are so forgiving but I need to set a better example of self control. Maybe its the "change". That's what Archie Bunker would say. He would say (like he said to Edith), "If you're gonna change, I wish you would just go ahead and CHANGE!".....so do I!
I wish I could go to sleep but my 4 yr old has a cold and took a long nap this evening. I didn't feel I should wake her since she has a fever. I gave her some cold medicine and put on Charlie and The Chocolate Factory for her. Maybe she will get sleep soon. Hope you all have a good night and day tomorrow!

OK, I know who the Masked Vicks Poet is, but I'm not saying, because I cheated to find out. Shame on me!
TOM, I haven't heard from Don in several weeks. Thanks for that lovely poem. I must say, I was dealing with "Autumn's razored winds" last night! Gusts up to 50 mph. I'm just glad it wasn't very cold. That wind was so strong that it blew a big old flowerpot filled with geraniums and sweet alyssum, right into the pond! This morning that pot was standing on its head in two feet of water. It wasn't easy to drag out of there, either, considering that I can't kneel on my left knee yet. Dirt and debris all in the pond, too. What a mess!
My roses need a fall pruning, but the crazy things are blooming their heads off! I just can't bring myself to whack all those beautiful blooms off, so guess I'll be pruning a bit late this year. I'm sure Mr. Wheeler wouldn't approve, but I can't help it.
Have a great evening, folks. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Hey to Dixie and rev Jr. Glad to see you again!
Let's all think of some Christmas memories or Christmas stories and share 'em on the porch this year. Lots of new porchsters, so if it's a repeat, that should be fine.
Pappa's got the brown truck polar express ready to go, let's have some fun and relaxation herest on the porch! (All except Lydia Crosswaithe of course, as we know she hates chitchat!) ha

Well, that was a neat little ditty.
I drove a load to the Phoenix area.
Beautiful here today. MDC, we should look each other up next time. Harhar, now you know my drycleaning secret, drive over the clothes with the truck! Good one.
Back to the open road soon. Northern AZ is great with the pine trees and even a little snow right now.
Goober, I love the Bozo show and the other talk/call/song program also, Truckin cowboy.
More on the flip flop, Prayin' as I drive fer you all, Glad all thanksgivings were good. later,

Of course I knew it was you all along (sticking out my lower lip with smugness like Barney does). I just wondered how long it would take these ordinary citizens to de-du-u-uce it like I did!

Mayberry Friends,
"Mack" will need to e-mail me before he can post any further. He is not in Utah and seems to be in Irvine, CA and uses pacbell.net as his ISP. This is the same ISP and the IP is very simular to our visitor(s) of the past month that have been causing problems for the porch.
I still don't understand the person that has time to visit a place that they don't like just to try and cause trouble and confusion.

Thanks Floyd for checking on things.Spot, those ribs sound good.Romeena, when I heard about those heavy winds on the news I thought about you, glad to hear there was no major damage to your place. Is 'the pole" still standing?wouldn't want somebody to have to come fix that again !haha!hey trail boss, are you also our dry cleaner Fred Goss?haha,i'm only teasing with ya,I sometimes even sign my emails "ky girl',out of habit.Rev.Jr,good to see you,how are you doing?Charlotte Tucker,I'm sorry about your loss,I know it made the holidays feel funny.I lost a family memeber about 10 years ago right during the holidays, and,I wasn't sure how to feel,i had so many emotions at one time,I almost felt numb.I will keep you in my prayers.AFD,glad you made it home o.k.,you know I haven't had carrot jello in a long time either, and those little cookies with the chocolate stars on top, yum!I like them with the hersheys kisses on top too!I can eat way too many of those!Pappa bear,I don't make the peanut butter balls,my mom does.I don't make them just because i eat most of them before the next batch is made also!Same reason I don't make the cookies with the kisses except maybe at christmas!ok,possum,is your quote from "the Waltons Christmas"?Remember Miss Mamie and Miss Emily were always making"pappas recipe'?Remember Ashley Longworth?Msg 31776-is that a quote from "A Bugs Life"?Boo,I can relate to what you are saying.I have found the best thing to do is just find someplace quiet, and not to be too hard on yourself.Being a wife and mother is a full time job with no timeoff,no breaks,it is not easy. It's one of life's most rewarding jobs, and,I know you wouldn't trade it for anything, but, you can be sure your kids know that too, and, they know you love them.I'm sending up a prayer for you. Now,before I close,I have to tell you all this, when my daughter told me,neither one of us could stop laughing. My oldest son,the one who is engaged to be married,he and his fiance' went to register at Bed,bath, and Beyond,my son had never been there before,in fact really hadn't paid much attention to home appliances or bedding of any kind.well, she picked out a food processer, and, when my son asked what it did,he really didn't understand,he thought she meant you put the food in and it comes out like cooked side dishes and baked meat etc. So,he was telling his sister and one of his friends about it last night, and, before my daughter could explain to him that it didn't actually fix the food,my sons friend was ready to go buy one to "process" a deer since tomorrow is the beginning of deer season here! She said they were so disappointed when she told them what it actually did!I wonder what would have happened if she hadn't explained it!haha!Gotta close, take care everyone-ky girl

Hm..I don't suppose anybody out there saves the Archives to their computer? It seems we are missing the archive 2004_08_06.html. I don't have that file on my local computer and it's not on the webserver. It must have gotten lost when TAGSRWC.com made a move from one server to another. Ouch...I hate missing something. Somebody may have said something really smart in that Archive. If you have it....let me know.

November 28, 2005 - Msg 31806:
Sorry Floyd, can't help you there but wish I could.
Thanks for the prayer and words of encouragement, KY Girl. Today has been a better day but a busy one. My husband and my dad are sick now! I am feeling much better, though.
MDC, I took Promensil for awhile once for irregular cycles. It's made from red clover leaf extract and is good stuff. I forgot about it and will try it again. Thanks for reminding me. I also know that soy and progesterone creme (made from yams, actually) are supposed to help, too, and laying off the caffeine because caffeine depletes the adrenal glands, which kick in and help when the hormones run low. Studies show that women whose adrenal glands are fuctioning well sometimes don't even have symptoms with menopause. Stress depletes the adrenals, too, by the way, which could explain alot!! My adrenals are probably shot by now.
Asa, I have an electrical "situation". Please help! I had a problem today with my, "exterior illumination". I got all my lights up and when I plugged them into the extension cord, they lighted for an instant and then all the fuses blew! Don't even know why. Any suggestions? I'm really bummed about it.
Homemaker!! I didn't consider you as the Vicks poet because you have been so busy with Star. Very good! I enjoyed the Vicks poems (you knew I would). The other day my friend, Karen was showing me her dry hands, she is a nurse and washes them alot so they are actually cracking and very sore. I told her that she should rub Vicks on them before bed and then put on some gloves. She said, "I sleep with my hands together under my face, so the Vicks will clear my sinus while helping my hands!" Two birds with one stone. Thought of you guys, of course.
Ro, it never got that windy here but it is pretty chilly tonight. Must have been pretty strong to knock that pot (not marajuana) into the pond!
MDC, I hope your hunch is wrong regarding Mrs. Wiley. Do you know when she posted last?
Better head off to bed...laundry to do tomorrow!

Oh, TOM, I really loved that poem..something really special about that one. Thanks for sharing.
Here's another movie quote. Guess this one: "What is HE doing here?!"...."He's making passionate love to me, Mother!"

MDC, I took the time to go back into the archives and research some of Mrs. Wiley's last posts. Sounds like she just might be overwhelmed right now caring for her parents. In August she talked about her dad being very sick and preparing for his death. She said she would move in and help her mother after her dad passed away. Also said she would be on public assistance, so she might not have the luxury of internet service right now. Sure hope things are improving for her and that she checks in soon.

whoops, how did I do that?!
November 29, 2005 - Msg 31810:
Oops, did Boo have a Boo boo? ; )
I was also looking back through the archives, and Mrs. Wiley's last post was 10/21, but there was a 2 month gap between that and the previous post. In a post she made on 8/4, she also said she had some pain management of some kind scheduled for November, so that may be keeping her busy as well.
Sorry to hear about your Grandmother, CT. Prayers for you and yours.
ky girl - I'd be happy to share my carrot jello and cookies with you anytime!
Hey to TOM, Mayberry Deputy, Dixie, and all the rest of ya we haven't seen in a while. Another face we haven't seen for a while is fungirl - anybody hear from her lately?
