Here's a question for you. I'm sure you know somebody who makes you hungry just watching them eat. They make it look so good you have to get what they are eating. Andy is like that for me. Not sure what it is he does, but everytime I see him eating I feel the urge to go get some and eat it too. And it must be the actor of the man cause it is even worse in his Matlock role. I can not see a Matlock episode without craving a hotdog all the way. Does he inspire any of you that same way?

Hazel, how can we help you to fel more comfortable here? We miss your wit and wisdom. Your ability to use episode quotes is uncanny. Plus you're so suave and sophisticated! :) Will you help us....I mean them?

Asa, I think I know what you mean about watching Andy eat. I can't say it makes me want to have some, too, but it does make me wish I could cook up something "delish" for him. Part of Andy's appeal to me is his resemblance to my late husband. Not his face so much (though my dear one was extremely handsome), but his physique. My husband was a couple of inches taller, but had the same broad-shouldered, well-proportioned build. Even walked the same. I enjoyed cooking for him, loved watching him dig into a succulent pot roast or fried chicken.

Actually, Andy reminds me of him in his atti-tudes and conduct as well. Level-headed, kind, enjoyed a little joke, tried to see the good in everyone. Not vindictive. The world was a better place while he was on the planet, and I think the same is true of Andy. He's one of the good guys.

I went out in the yard to plant a few more pansies, and it's getting COLD out there! Suddenly very cloudy, no sun to temper the chill a bit, and it's just uncomfortable. I think I'm going to stay indoors for now. I'm a bit concerned about the pond - the water is a bit cloudy, and I don't know why. Too fresh, and it's too cold for it to be an algae bloom - I think it's sand that blew in there while the guys were sawing the rocks that we used for a topliner. Still, I'd think it would have settled by now. Guess I'll see how it looks tomorrow.

Asa, I overheard Barney saying something about doing a "bullet maintenance" check. I'd clean those little green things you've got stuck in your belt, if I were you.

I'm not sensitive, I'm just high strung like Barney. No, I'm just kidding. You know, I think if I could pick one thing I don't like about the porch, it would be that so many are missing that used to be here, like Romeena said. When I read the archives of a year or so ago I realize how many are gone and its sad. The porch is just more wonderful when its nice and full...kind of like the trees.

We had our church Thanksgiving supper tonight and it was very good. My turkey turned out nice and moist, thankfully. After the supper, people took turns telling what they were thankful for. It was really nice.

Ro, such sweet sentiments expressed about your husband. I love hearing them and hope you will always feel comfortable sharing them.

Asa, I have to be honest and say that the whole "Andy eating" thing is very weird. Maybe you're, "a nut". HeeHee....you know I am kidding with you! Andy never makes me want to eat but when he tells bedtime stories to Otis in his boxer shorts, he makes me want to sleep. Since you are confessing, though, I will confess something strange, too. Sometimes Aunt Bee makes me really mad. I find myself getting so irritated at her, especially in the episode when she is supposed to "call the man" or when she is really bossy and unreasonable with Andy. Am I alone in this? I don't find her to be a very endearing character at times. I like her in the very first episode when she was really sweet, though.

I'm beat...think I'll watch TV, eat some popcorn and go to bed...that's what I'll do. Watch TV, eat popcorn and bed.....Unless someone wants to walk down to the fillin' station with me and get a bottle of pop. We can count the stars and cars.

November 21, 2005 - Msg 31637: Hi folks... my "uncle Ollie's" family with 4 kids under 10 here for the week! HELP! ha! hangin' in there.
Pappa, header at top of this page says "sit down and shoot the breeze with us", so that leaves a pretty wide margin for topics from your thoughts on the house vote to the latest quate-a-thon. That is what attracted me to the porch. No cussing, no s-x, nothin' but good bantor back and forth! This week will probably be dominated with Thanksgiving thoughts. Hope hazel and others are ok with such thoughts, for as boo or someone said easrlier, if it was ALL tags, we would run out.
But we can pull out the box once in a while, then shove it back under the porch, then back to tags or whatever. There, I've said it even tho my scant two years on the porch may not afford me such.
I better say Happy Thanksgiving now, just in case the rels "pull me under" soon HA!

November 21, 2005 - Msg 31640: Hey everybody! I don't know if I can answer all of your questions, PAPPA, bit I'll try a couple. I am thankful for eternal life, family and friends, my church family, and God's provision. My favorite Christmas movie is A Christmas Carol with George C. Scott AND It's a Wonderful Life, then comes A Christmas Story (with Ralphie) and Christmas Vacation (with the Griswolds). I also love a made for TV 1 hour program that aired in the early 70's called The House Without a Christmas Tree. Anybody remember it? It starred Jason Robards and Mildred Natwick (played the bride of Frankenstien). It is about a widower with a 9 yr old daughter and they live with his mother. The man is a real scrooge and forbids his daughter to bring a Christmas tree into the house (he is still bitter over the death of his beloved wife). Good show, if you ever have the chance it is worth watching. Ok, for my wish for the world, no suffering children or animals.

MDC, hope you are hanging in there, Buddy. I know its hard sometimes with relatives. My sister has 2 grandkids that are a real handful and when you pair them up with my little girl who is also a handful, well it can get pretty hairy. Our holidays just aren't the peaceful affairs they used to be but we are blessed.

For 2005, I'm thankful for continuing health, for being able to revisit Mongolia, and for the deepening bonds with family and friends. Lots of other things, of course, but pappa asked for three.

No, I won't be shopping the day after Thanksgiving, because I have to work Wednesday and Thursday nights, and will be pooped on Friday! See, TOM, my Thanksgiving won't be too great, either, but that's okay.

My outside lights are up, thanks to my sweet son - just have a few ground and bush lights to put in place, and I'll probably do that Friday afternoon after I sleep a while. My tree will go up next week, and won't come down until mid-January or whenever I feel like taking it down. It's pretty, I enjoy it, so what's the rush?

My favorite Holiday movie is "It's a Wonderful Life" - the original b&w version. It was my husband's favorite, too.

The one gift I'd give to others is an open mind and heart, to let the truth of God's salvation enter.

For a Mayberry Thanksgiving, I'd plan a big old get-together, everybody bring a favorite dish and a folding chair, and after the meal, we'd sing and laugh and swap stories. Then we'd have a need and remedy swap. One person says "I need (whatever) and anyone who can do so says "I can fix that." Example - Hazel says, "I need someone to rake the leaves in my yard." Goober says, "I can do that for you, and I need a homemade lemon pie." So of course, Hazel says, "I can bake a pie." Could be fun, don't you think?

November 22, 2005 - Msg 31651: I'm gonna have to buy me a copy of The Ghost and Mr Chicken. I haven't seen it in about 15 years. I did find a copy of The Shakiest Gun In The West Part 2 and my little boy almost laughed his head off at it, especially the part when Don Knotts and Tim Conway are having their picture taken at the photographers and Tim is tied to a hat rack and the donkey sticks his head through the curtain while the picture is being taken! I liked the idea about the need and remedy swap, Ro. You know, at that Mayberry get-together, I want us to sit out on the front porch in the evening and sing while Andy plays, then they Darlin's would show up and we would all dance "till our socks were hot and ravelin'". Then someone would suggest walking downtown to get a soda and we would spend all night at the diner just telling tall tales and teasing Barney about Juanita.....(singing)"Nita..Juauauauaniiiita.."

TOM, I'm sorry things don't look so good for you at Thanksgiving. I will pray that your situation improves and God blesses you in unexpected ways. I want to thank you for sharing so many lovely poems with us. I know it means alot to me, personally. Try to keep your chin up. We are always here on the porch with you.

Charlotte, I don't remember what instrument Lydia likes...anyone else recall? That is one of my very favorite episode. Lydia was a real hoot. What on earth was Barney thinking when he tried to fix her up with Andy?! November 22, 2005 - Msg 31652: Good morning everyone - Star has made it through another evening. I called the vet and we had to give her an injection to induce her babies (I hated to do that but I really want to keep her alive). She has pregnancy toxemia, yes animals get it too. She is very responsive and she hasn't stopped eating or drinking which are good signs but it is still a 50/50 chance of whether she will survive. I told my husband if she makes it through this - she will get a golden pen!

November 22, 2005 - Msg 31655: the porch is nice and full- that's wonderful. i'll try and answer a few but if i miss someone this time around i'll catch you on the flip side. if you haven't been in awhile go to star trek in mayberry and check out the wonderful pictures and commentary, floyd did another great job, it's been there for awhile but well worth a visit. fred goss- our prayers are with you and your each time you roll out. charloote tucker- i swear i can smell your wonderful thanksgiving dinner coming together when i steped out the back door this morning in lincoln,il. boo- i liked jason robards also cause he was an underated character actor, why i bet he even worked and knew rock hudson, aunt bea sure is sweet on old rock. BEING SERIOUS FOR A MOMENT; TOM; i lost my father 10 years ago on nov 23 and it was very sudden. ironically that was the day kennedy was assasinated in 63. dad had been talking and joking about his plans for thanksgiving, so one never gets over it completly--- what i try to do is impart a funny story they shared or defuse a fuss with an antedoate and try and remember god has each of us here for a purpose that only we can do, never stop writing or reaching out to your family, us, because we love and need you buddy. now back to mdc- our tree goes up 4 days after christmasl we drive down thr street pick out a real purty one that's half decorated take it home, cause when you look at the cost of real and artifical trees these days and break down the cost per day you could buy all kinds of mayberry things. ha. MAYBE THE VICKS POET ISN'T A VICKS SALESMAN. I'LL BET HE'S REALLY A TV PRODUCER FROM NEW YORK CITY. No, no, Possum. I promise I am not the Vicks poet. YOU were going to be my next guess, then ASA! Glad you have heard of House Without A Christmas Tree...I really love it. Its so nostalgic. I had a neat nostalgic moment yesterday. I know a single woman who is in her 50's and lives in the little town I grew up in. Anyway, she and her grandmother used to live next door to me when I was age 2 until age 6, when we moved. She never married and still lives in the house she shared with her grandma. She is selling AVON now and I ordered some things from her because she is out of work and desperate for a job. I went over to her house to pick up my order yesterday and she invited me in. I had not been in that house for probably 35 years and it had not changed one bit. Same old wood floors and same furniture, very modest but neat and very cozy. She had one of those old-timey fake fireplaces with the gas heater logs burning and the house had that gas smell that old houses have in the winter. I loved it. I could have sat in there for hours. Does anyone know what I am talking about or do I sound like a raving lunatic? Somehow, it was like capturning a piece of the past, that secure happy feeling of being a child again in my old neighborhood. When I left I looked next door at my old chilhood home and caught a whiff of sweet, freshly-mowed grass and it took me back again to playing on the front porch while Daddy mowed the yard. Really neat experience.

Thanks for the tip, RO, I'll have to look up Weaver's store. Hope you are blessed with some surprise blessings this Thanksgiving. I worked every Thanksgiving for about 13 straight years when I was working as a nurse! Can't say much for the free turkey dinners at the hospital...I ususally didn't get them anyway becuase I worked night shift like you. Anyway, I can sympathize with you.

Loved that quote, Hazel..that is a great episode but they never seem to show it on TV Land. Anybody know what season its on?

PAPPA, my Dad lost his father 65 years ago last week. My dad was 14 and he and his dad were out doing some work in the backyard. His dad was shoveling and stood up and said, "I have terrible heartburn" and those were his last words. He was 43. My dad ran next door to fetch the dr that lived there and the doc ran over and gave him a shot of epinephrine in his heart but it was all over. My grandmother had to raise 4 boys on her own and did a great job at it, even through the great depression. Two of her sons served in WW2, one being my dad and both returned safely. Dad says November is a tough month for him. I think his mother also passed away in November...he also got married in November, haha! Interesting side-note to that story, Dad's father had a brother named Oscar who died a week after him. He was only in his thirties and died the same way. They had a third brother named Tom who lived to be almost 100. Go figure?!

Well, mercy! I have talked ya'lls ears right off! Forgive me.

Better go check on the young ones.

BOO- what a wonderful memory! The sights, the sounds, the aromas etc, They say that the sense of smell is the strongest memory maker! Isnt that amazing. Whenever i smell Dial soap for example, I think of the boarding school i attended for high school. (It was the only soap sold at our little stationery store, so consequently, all the shower rooms etc smelled like it!) ha Just like your cut grass smell.
Well, I'll help my wife and sister get the kids to bed!

Can't wait to see Angel in My Pocket. Anybody remember when it was made or anything about the story line...I am really curious about it?

I know what you mean MDC, the smell of Dial reminds me of the Junior High girl's locker room...it was a brutal place. Those junior high girls could be so mean to each other...lots of mean pranks. I remember having to sit on the gym floor until someone confessed to putting poor Belinda's gym shoes in the toilet! Then there was the time my friend Sherry got caught with cotton balls in her little training bra. Horrors! Dial doesn't bring back such good memories for me, needless to say. When I say I hated junior high, I mean it. I was a chubby, unpopular kid that got made fun of sometimes. High school got alot better, though, thankfully. Now my son is going through some of that and I feel for him. He is chubby because of the Paxil he takes and not very athletic and the Tourette Syndrome doesn't help. Sometimes the kids are mean to him even in a Christian school. The difference is that if he informs his teacher, the kids get in big trouble. The other day three girls just started hitting him during recess and instead of taking it like he usually does, he went to his teacher. The girls went straight to the principles office and came back to class with written apologies. They never did it again. Boy, childhood can be so hard on kids sometimes but I always tell Sean that he will be a more compassionate person because of what he suffers and that it will form his character. He seems pleased by the thought that he understands what it feels like to be treated that way and doesn't want to do the same to others.

Well, I have done it again. Guess I just had a need to talk today. Better finish up and head off to bed. I took the kids to see Chicken Little tonight and thought it was a bit lame. Some cute parts...I think I am just ready for a more mature movie. Anybody seen Walk The Line yet?

November 23, 2005 - Msg 31671: Well my darling Star has made it through another evening and she is perky. Not standing up yet but the babies should be born tonite. I doubt that they will survive but I will do my best to help them. She sure has been a good girl for me.
I am so sorry that Sean must endure what he endures. That is rough when you are the parent and you see them struggling. My son is being tested right now for his learning disabilities - I tried to do all the interventions that I could but he was and is frustrated with some of his work and not getting it. We struggle at home sometimes but I know that if Sean were in my son's school - he would have a friend in Casey. Casey tends to seek out those kids who aren't being played with and play with them so they aren't left out. It really hurts him to see kids left out.

Well - I shall go for a while. . .
