Ro, I LOVE this side of Daylight Savings. The kids get sleepy earlier and I get to sleep an hour later. I do remember working nights and having to work an extra hour, though.

I had a great weekend and had a neat Mayberry-like moment I will share with you. Remember I said we were going to George West to my in-laws (by the way MDC, I didn't understand what you said about George West one or two?) and we had a good time. They attend a Cowboy Church. I don't know if Cowboy churches are everywhere but we have them here and Texas and they have riding and roping, etc after the service. Well, on Saturday they had a Boer Goat and Sheep compet-tion and we went to see it. What fun! I loved the goats...so much personality. The sheep, on the other hand, were rather dull and well,..."sheepish". Seeing all the goats made me think of Homemaker, of course. Now for the Mayberry Moment....Bruce and I took a drive to look for antiques and ended up in this little-bitty town called Tilden (population of about 300) and we stopped at this little old store on Main st. called Joe's Market. It was REALLY old and was painted white with an old white glider in the front for sittin' and talking with the locals. The two front doors were wide open and the smell of freshly oiled wood met us as we entered the store. The original, pecan floors were beautiful! Two elderly ladies were running the store and they were very friendly and talkative. The lady who ran the store was so pretty and I was floored to find out that she was 90 years old, no kidding she was beautiful and so nice. She had been born in Tilden and lived there her whole life. I got to meet two of her children and one grandson while we were there in the store. Also, while I was there visiting, a retired, white-haired fellow came in and he was obviously having trouble walking. He said he had driven from Arkansas and was, "all stove up"! I had to chuckle because I remembered a conversation we had here on the porch about use of the words, "stove up". He also said that since his hair turned white he has had to deal with the, "rust factor". He was just the cutest thing. Anyway, I thought of you guys when I was there because it was so much like Mayberry there in that old store.

Took the kids to a fall festival tonight at a church. It was in the 80's here today and sunny. How's the weather for you Asa....cold?

Ro, let me tell you what Erin did today in church! During the prayer before they take up the offering, she was giving Bruce a hard time and wouldn't listen when he was telling her to be quite. He was telling her, "Shh, be quite or I am going to spank you." Well, she wouldn't obey so he grabbed her up right at the end of the prayer when everyone just opened their eyes and he started out the door at the front of the church near where we were sitting. He had her under one arm like a sack of potatoes with her bottom sticking up in the air for all to see and she was screaming, "I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" as he carried her out. There was complete silence and then an outburst of laughter from EVERYone in the church, even the pastor. Man, I will be so glad when she learns to behave in church!

However, in that fairy-child body there lies a will of iron, and steely determination. It is always her intention to win, whatever the confrontation may be. As precious as she is, I'm glad she's Boo's, and not mine. I've paid my dues, thank you. I've carried a few out of church myself, and my husband carried them out even more often than I did. When he did it, the kid just knew they were dead on the spot.

Well,there were some folks visiting with a little girl about her age and every time the little girl got loud and her parents scolded her,Laci would laugh! Finally when the little girl got so loud that they had to take her outside,Laci clapped! Laci has made that trip outside several times herself! Guess it's natural for kids to act up in church-remember Opie in church? Ha!

October 31, 2005 - Msg 31219: Oh, my stars, homemaker, I hadn't thought about those Playtex rubber girdles in many, many years! I grew up on this end of the era where no self-respecting female over the age of 14 would go out without a girdle. I remember having to wear gloves to church and any other remotely dressy occasion. But that girdle! My mother wore one, and she only barely needed it. She made me wear one, too, and I was a stick! I weighed 108 lbs on my wedding day, not much on a 5'6" frame, but I had to wear a girdle whenever I dressed up, and that included a bridal gown. She made me wear that girdle, and on top of it, a Merry Widow, cinched up like Scarlett O'Hara. I could barely breathe. The Merry Widow had tabs and clips to attach to my stockings, thank you. Talk about miserable! I felt like a circus pony in full harness. Once I got married, I threw that wretched girdle away, and my mom was horrified. She finally abandoned hers, too, but not until about 1985. My mom was a lady, through and through. You know, looking at what passes for clothing these days, I think my mom may have been right. Young girls come to church these days wearing things I wouldn't have worn to work in the yard when I was their age. The times, they are a-changing!

Well, gotta go get my eyes checked this morning. My diabetes doctor insists, and he's right. They're okay, but it still pays to check them regularly. My blood sugar stays in excellent control, so I don't expect any problems, but better safe than sorry. See you all at the party at the Remshaw place. HA Tonight our church is having a "Hallelujah Nite." during trick or treat. Some of the folks are dressing up in Biblical character costumes.They are handing out tracts,candy and tapes. The talk about the girdles cracks me up. I had not thought of those in years. I was too young to wear one but I remember my mom's girdle and she was a thin woman..hard to figure. I also remember her having those awful belts that held on those "things that women used every month". Just reminded me of a story my mom tells about something I did when I was 4 yrs old. My mom had an older sister who died at age 40, her name was Elizabeth and when she was sick at home, I went outside to pick some flowers to take to her when we were visiting. I was looking for something to put them in and found a blue box that I pulled out of the trash outside. I put the flowers in it and carried it upstairs to Aunt Elizabeth's room. I was so pleased with myself. It turns out the box was an empty Kotex box. I'll bet my Aunt really got a kick out of it!

Well, lots to do so I better get moving in that direction. Have a safe Halloween...se ya at the Remshaw house...I'll be the one in the green bottle.

We had a very interesting Halloween, let me tell you! We were expecting a cool front to come in here at about 10pm, according to our local weatherman, Dale Nelson (unaffectionately known as "Dead-Wrong Dale"). He said, "There won't be any rain in our area until after 10pm so don't cancel any of your plans". Well, like I said earlier, I decided to take the kids trick or treating (which I only did once before), even though we could see alot of lightening on the horizon. We parked our car in a nice area and walked house to house. Everyone was having a nice time (except Erin who I heard talking to herself, saying, "I don't like trick or treat"..she was getting tired). Now at this point it was in the 70's when suddenly the wind starting blowing like a darned tropical storm and the rain came like a typhoon! It was cold and the rain was coming at us sideways because of the strong winds. I had to run 4 blocks with the kids. I had to take off my flip-flops so I could run and after 2 blocks, it started to hail, so I was running in the wind and hail with Erin screaming, "It hurts! It hurts!". I couldn't see where we were going because when I opened my eyes to see in front of me it felt like needles hitting my eyes. I shoved Erin behind me to sheild her and we just ran while I tried to see through the slits in my eyes. Oh, it was fun! I told the poor dripping wet kids that we should do something different next year and stay home and play games or something. They both said, "Yes!"

So, think I'll get into my warm bed and snooze!

November 01, 2005 - Msg 31234: What a lovely November afternoon it is! Bright sunshine, 65 degrees, clear as a bell. We had a lot of much-needed rain yesterday, a really nasty day, but it just washed things clean so today could be beautiful. Even the air looks clean, and in this metroplex, that's saying a lot.

The Remshaw house party was so much fun! I broke away for a while and went out to my son's house. Two little grandsons - one dressed in the cutest sailor suit you ever saw, made by his other grandmother, and the older one (age 4) made a very manly Superman, complete with built-in muscles and real red boots. The 2-yr old sailor talked about his brother's "musnels", and kept trying to show us his own, flexing his little arms and getting red in the face. They live on one of those wonderful one-block-long streets, almost all young families who all know each other, and the kids just walked both sides of the block, gathering candy, with the parents standing a few feet behind them. Back at the house, Melissa and I made caramel apples, using real Kraft caramels, not those wrap things, and toasted the seeds my son had dug out of the pumpkins he carved. A good time was had by all!

I have a piano tuner coming by this afternoon, to see if my poor piano can be saved or if we need to shoot it. It hasn't been tuned in years and has two broken keys and a broken pedal. When it's in tune, it has a lovely voice, and I might just play it a little bit, if there's no one around to hear. Do you suppose I could get Bee to come over and play "Chinatown" one of these days?

Well, gotta run. The Plum needs a good comb-out and her little ears cleaned. That is, if I can find her. She heard me talking about it, and disappeared like a wisp of smoke. However, I'm sure she's saying "hey" from her hiding place. --Romeena

I ordered my Fourth Season DVDs today. Now I can hardly wait for them to arrive! I notice that "The Haunted House" which was episode 97 or 98, depending on whether you're looking at filming order or broadcast order, is not listed. I hope that was just an oversight in the list of episodes, and that it will actually be there on the DVD.

I am personally glad that Halloween is over and we can start planning for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Are any of you doing anything interesting for Thanksgiving? We are going to my In-lawa that live out in the country. My family and my husband's family will spend it together along with my best friend Karen and her 2 children. I'm really looking forward to it. Hope we have nice weather because we are planning to eat on tables outside. I will be cooking one turkey and my mom-in-law will make another. We both do dressing and then everyone else makes the side dishes and desserts. I always have to make some pies, though..its tradition, and ya'll remember I make prize-winning chocolate pies. The church is having its Thanksgiving supper soon, maybe I'll enter another pie this year....maybe lemon meringue...or banana creme. What's ya'lls favorite? I also make really good candies sweet potatoes with lots of brown sugar and butter and I bake them a good, long time until this yummy syrup forms. Mmmmmm.... Boy, I'm getting hungry!

My dear husband put me on a budget starting today, so I have to watch my spending and keep receipts for everything..bummer! Its hard to do that this time of year.

How is this for family birthdays? Today was my father's birthday,tomorrow is my mom's birthday.It's also my aunt's birthday- my grandparents had two children,both born on the same day-different years!
Spot,you named some great musical acts- Bob Segar is fantastic. Saw him back in the late 70's-wow! I also got to see the original Lynyrd Skynyrd in Charlotte a few months before the crash. So glad I got that chance.
Don't get me started on Asa's antics at the Halloween party! I'm still trying to get this gunk he threw at me outta my possum fur. Think he had a combination of Vicks and Dippity Doo that he was slinging- he got me good! Anybody else get hit with it?

Thanksgiving stories...I'm from the south...all my thanksgiving stories start with "ham, green bean casarole, mashed potatoes, corn bread and sweet potatoe casarol"...and they all end with banana pudding (the kind with the nilla wafers all around the bowl) and laying on the couch scratchin my belly! :)

Ky Girl...I'm 41...gonna be 42 in March. KNow what you mean about the kids and music. My favs were always Journey, KISS, Eagles...Segar...those were the biggies. Now my 14 year old wants to come home and tell me about "zepplin" or "the crew". He has no idea...and just can't beleive those big old vinyl discs i call 'LP's.

I remember a bad Thanksgiving when my husband and I just got new light beige carpet and my nephew spilled a pan of candied yams in the middle of the living room. Not fun. When ya'll were kids did you get up and watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade? I have fond memories of that and the wonderful aroma of the turkey in the oven. Every year I try to watch that parade but I always end up bored with it now and I am always the one making the turkey now that Mom is disabled so Thanksgiving morning is busy.

Well, better think about going to bed. I can't get used to this time change, I keep waking up an hour earlier than I have to. Bye!

I saw #96 and #98, but #97 wasn't there. The dates even skipped - there was nothing for 10/07, and I remarked to my friend that #97 belonged right there. Now it's there. Hmmmm. Has anyone noticed the Count hovering around here lately?

I'm leaving tomorrow, heading down to Fredericksburg to spend the weekend with all my kids. The Florida kids are coming in, and the son and DIL who live here are going down also, and both my daughters live there, so it will be one big happy family. Only my Beloved One will be missing, but we know where he is, and I know he'd want me to go and have a good time, and so I shall.

Guess I'd better hit the ironing board, tomorrow will be a long day. Four and a half hour drive! The Plum will be staying home with my friend, as there will be three huge dogs and two little dogs and a cat down there, and with my gimpy knee I don't want to be having to race to rescue my baby. She would just spend most of the time perched on the back of the sofa anyway, seeking peace and safety. Maisy, the Jack Russell/fox terrier mix, just can't stand that and is constantly pursuing her, wanting to play, so it gets a little harrowing. The drive will be lonely without her, though.

Love those El caminos, Rancheros etc. A guy at work has an 84 GMC Caballero (GMC version of the el camino)It has original paint and stripes. 70's music talk is like Welcome Back Kotter! ha. I started teaching in 71 and around 73 the Shilites came out with "Have you Seen Her." It was the only slow song the boys would dance to! haha, but it would sure fill the dance floor of that middle school! Taught about 15 years and still miss it each sept, but things are so different now!

Now I wonder what idiot came up with that idea, "Hey let's come up with our own gimmick and do something nobody else is doing...let's wear tights!".

Homemaker, I had an Aunt Della amd Uncle Wyatt that always spent Thanksgiving with us and I sure miss them. Uncle died in 1988 and Aunt Della died about 5 years ago. She always brought my favorite Blueberry Banana Cream Cheese Pie. I still make it at almost every holiday dinner.

Possum, I don't think John Denver was very young, though I guess that is relative. Did you ever see a cheesy Christmas movie he was in called The Christmas Gift? He plays a widower with a young daughter who spends Christmas in a small Colorado town called Georgetown, Well, the little town it was filmed in is actually Georgetown, Colorado and it is one of my favorite places to go when we vacation in Colo. Check out the movie if you ever see it on TV. TBS usually shows it at least once every holiday season.

Hope Ro has a good time with her family in Fredricksburg. I will be going there myself in about 4 weeks. It is a great little place to go and they have a wonderful Christmas festival we like to take the kids to.

I saw on the news where one of the Cowsill brothers was missing after Hurricane Katrina and two of his siblings were on CNN talking about how they're trying to find him. Noah sent out a dove from the ark and it returned so he knew the waters had not yet receded. Then he sent out another dove and it didnt return. I asked the class why, and one little boy pops up and says "because he drowned!" ha

KY girl- you would put baking soda inside the little plastic frogmen, place them in a full bathtub, then as the baking soda "disapated" they would rise to the top. As for the glasses, well they were advertised showing a guy wearing them along with a very bold (for the 50's-60s)illustration of a silloette of a woman's figure! But they were just sunglasses! The joke was on us kids! I just looked on ebay and they actually have a pair for sale there!
Thank your dad for us for serving. It has only been about the last 5 years that my dad has talked about it. He says he just wanted to get on with life, but as he ages, he now wants people to know his story. He's 87. Did 65 missions over Germany, decorated several times for distinguished flying, bring back his shot up plane and crew safely!
