Pappa bear, the Plum would be delighted to come play with you, but you have to be a bit careful with her, she's a delicate little girl furkid, you know. If you want to see what she looks like, go to www.romeena.myphotoalbum.com. There are several pictures of her there, along with some of the other family furkids.

Well, I go to the doctor in the morning. You all please be praying that he'll let me off these dratted crutches. I just hate the things, and do so want to get out in my yard and do a few things. Won't be able to do a lot, but I can at least prune a few roses, put out critter feed and fill birdbaths. It's hard to do those things balanced on crutches! Works a little better from the walker, but still not very comfortable.

My friend took me to the grocery store today, and I used one of those drive-em carts! Woohoo! What fun! I was the terror of the store. Ran headlong into a stack of bottled water once, nearly backed over a lady, stopped short in front of my friend and she nearly fell over me and the cart. It's a wonder they didn't throw me out of the store. My friend and I were laughing so hard I think the store people thought we were crazy and were afraid to approach us! Still, as long as I had money to pay for the groceries, they probably didn't mind too much. Anyway, we had fun.

Well, I think I feel a nap coming on. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Hey to everybody...Mayberry Girl...good to see you again. I 'friended' you today (Hillbillyshoes)

Heard the story today where the salesman is calling on the phone, and this little kid answers and in a whisper says "hello", the man say "hello, is your mom there", still whispering the kid says "she's busy". The caller asks "is your dad there", again in a whisper the kid says "he's busy". The caller was gettin a little put off...and say "well, is there anyone else there". The little one again whispers
"yes...the police are here". Now the caller is concerned and says "are you ok? what are the police doing there with your mom and dad"? The little boy whispers "lookin fer me!" :-)

I remember in grade school someone would always bring a radio when they were day games and we'd listen at recess. Dizzy Dean, Peewee Reese, and other great announcers... "He 'slud' into third" etc.

October 26, 2005 - Msg 31124: Yes, I'm doing something special for lunch today, Asa. My son gets off school at 12 on Wednsdays and I am taking him and Baby Girl on a picnic at the park. Just gonna pick up burgers or something (probably from Sonic). You are welcome to join us. The weather is just beautiful here today...sunny and in the 60's right now.

Ro, I just hate to see squirrels killed, too. You remeinded me of something kind of humorous, though. I have a nephew named Matt that is 26. Well, he was always an extremely sensitive child when it came to animals...he wouldn't kill a fly. When he was 15 and just got his driver's permit, I went out with him on the country roads to let him drive. We were going about 30mph when a squirrel dashed into the street from my direction. Before I could say anything, "thump", it was too late for the poor thing. Matt didn't know what happened and asked, "What was that". I told him, "Aw' nothing...". He bought it...hated to lie but I knew he would be devastated! By the way, I looked at the pictures on your online photo album...loved the squirrels in love...also loved Sugarplum's straw hat.

Speaking of animals, did any of you read the article in October's Reader's Digest about animal heroes? Really neat..one lady fell in a pothole while running with her Black lab and when she called for help, nobody heard her. She told her lab, "Home!" and the dog drug her all the way home...I expect she was really trying to tell him to GO home and get help (like Lassie does) but the dog sort of misunderstood, heehee...oh well, he got the job done.

Better go...gotta pick up my son from school...ps-for those praying for Sean, he made the A Honor role again and his Tourette symptoms have subsided (almost gone right now). Thanks so much for the prayers!

October 26, 2005 - Msg 31125: Oh Hey there, MDC...you can come on our picnic, too...bring the Hoagies..

Boo

October 26, 2005 - Msg 31126: Boo, that was a very kind thing you did for your nephew. I'm sure he would have been heartbroken. Someone helped me once, too. I was driving home one afternoon, driving my husband's pickup on a rather bumpy road near my house. Suddenly, a squirrel ran from beneath some bushes, right in front of the truck. I didn't even have a chance to get my foot on the brake. I felt several bumps, and just knew I had hit him. I drove on about a block, and pulled over because I couldn't see through the tears. A young man in a little red sports car pulled right up beside me and called to me. He said, "Lady, it's okay! You didn't hit him! I was right behind you and saw it all. He ran under the truck, out one side and right up a tree." I wanted to just kiss that young man! I would have grieved for days. The little squirrels are so small and innocent and I just can't stand to see them hurt. Anyway, I thought it was very kind and thoughtful of that young man to stop and reassure me.

My son threw an early, semi-rural paper route for a while, and around dawn one morning, a little bunny ran under his jeep, and he hit him. Horrified, he stopped and picked the little creature up. It was still alive, so he wrapped it in a towel, finished his route quickly and drove back to town to the 24-hr animal ER. By the time he got there, the little bunny was looking a bit better, but they checked him out anyway. The vet said he thought he was just shaken and in shock, and gave him an injection of something to stabilize him. By then the sun was up, the chill was leaving, and my son drove the bunny back out to the exact spot where he had hit him. He put him on the ground, the bunny sat there for a minute, then just hopped off into the grass at the roadside, apparently okay. I've always loved my son, of course, but never more than on the day he invested $100 and half a tank of gas on a little wild bunny he thought he had injured. Peaceable Kingdom, indeed.

Well, off I go. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

October 26, 2005 - Msg 31134: Wow, that's awesome about your son, Ro. He sounds like he could be a member of my family, too. He is the way he is because he saw you live out kindness toward animals, I'll bet. My mom has an extrememly soft heart for animals and we watched her rescue and help them as we grew up, now my sister and I are the same way and I wouldn't change a thing. At one time I even had a seagull named Fred in my garage all weekend until I could get him to a vet that was licensed to care for state-protected animals. I found 2 injured seagulls that month, in fact. One I rescued from a group of mean little boys who where chasing it after giving it a broken wing. Sometimes its expensive and frustrating to go out of your way to help but at the times I have done it, I don't know how to explain it but I just knew it was what God wanted me to do....guess it goes back to Adam. It has been a trial living with my parents because they live out of town in a small town and I have found several animals in need in the last year. A couple of months ago this yellow lab female started hanging around looking for food and she was obviously starved. Her owners lived across the street and had 3 other dogs in about the same condition. I went to talk to them first and got nowhere so I called animal control because one of the little dogs had been injured and besides being skin and bones, he could only drag his back legs across the ground. Then I noticed that the yellow lab was probably pregnant so I loaded up all of them at once and my sister and I took them to a shelter that tries to place dogs in good homes. Its always something around here, now we have the goats and pigs in the yard...hope the owner keeps feeding them because I aready have his black Lab that he didn't feed.

Sorry, didn't mean to write a novel.

Thanks Quiet Sam! We are so proud of Sean and so thankful to God for his progress.

Hey, MDC, guess you are watching baseball about now. Hope your team wins (I think--is there a Texas team playing?...).

I'll sign off with a nice story....my 4 yr old Baby Girl who can be so darned ornery came up to me this morning and said, "You just don't know how much I love you. I love you so much". I was really surprised because she is not at all the "mushy" type. God bless our little ones.

October 26, 2005 - Msg 31137: Compassion for animals does run in the family, I guess, Boo. My husband had a soft spot for them, too. My oldest son, who lives on a private lake in Florida, is just like his brother. I once saw him go roaring away from his dock on a Seadoo, then stop short, turn around and come back to the dock, very slowly. He drove the craft right up into the shoreline, and shooed away a little green sucker-foot frog that was riding on the nose. Said he didn't want it to jump off out in the lake and become fish or turtle food, so he brought it back to shore. Those little frogs really aren't aquatic, and apparently had hopped onto the Seadoo from the dock. Anyway, I was proud of my son for having pity on the little thing.

I'll bet your heart just melted when Erin said that to you. She's such a cute little thing. I'm so happy to hear that Sean is enjoying a "reprieve" right now. Let's pray it's permanent.

October 28, 2005 - Msg 31156: Charlotte Tucker. I thought you were getting a little fresh with Hazel. Glad you cleared that up.:) Thanks for calling me a pip you guys. I hope thats good. I ain't ever been a pip before. Is there some kind of metal that comes with it? Nothing gawdy or to brilliant. Heaven knows the job alone is reward enough. (I don't know what my birthstone is but I was born in may if that helps.)

Asa

October 28, 2005 - Msg 31157: Oh Asa, you are such a joy! By the way, your birthstone is Emerald (cool)...wish mine were Emerald. My is ruby and I never care much for it..always seemed to me like old ladies wore rubies (no offense to you ruby wearers).

Ro, so very sorry you lost a dear friend...only temprorarily, though. I am so thankful for what Jesus did for us on the cross..."Oh grave, where is thy victory....?"

Hey Ky Girl, I bet you are very proud of your son. My prayer today is that he would stay safe and blessed and that the Lord would give you peace. Commit that boy to the Lord, He has a plan for him, that's for sure.

Ro, had to smile about your son...I understand completely and would have been compelled to do the same thing. The other day Sean was moving and accidentally ran over a frog and he hated it. Thank God that our boys have soft hearts.

Hi Charlotte Tucker, you know, from the things you put in your posts, you seem to be such a sweet and gentle soul. If you lived down here in South Texas I am sure we would be great friends (well, I guess that goes for all of you).

It is an absoutely gorgeous day here! Dry and 70 degrees, just a beautiful cool breeze blowing the trees. Today is my husband's birthday and we are going to visit his mom in a little town about an hour from here called George West. Anyone ever heard of it? For his birthday, Bruce wants to go there to Nolan Ryan's restaraunt. Its kind of out in the middle of nowhere but he likes the food. We are going to stay the night and go antiquing tommorrow. Can you believe the luck?...a husband who like to antique shop?!

Ya'll have a great fall day,

Boo

October 28, 2005 - Msg 31162: Asa, you are a pistol! Especially when you are loaded. hic. ;)

I was reading about the attraction between squirrels and cars, and that just reminds me of the birthday party we had for Kai the first year we moved back to my hometown. We were all getting everything set up for the party, when a squirrel met a car(in the bad way) right in front of the house. And needless to say, the car faired better than the squirrel. Poor thing.
Well, Kai's little guests were about to arrive and there was a fresh squirrel cadaver in the middle of the street, so my mom went right out there without gloves or anything, and picked up the squirrel just non-chalantly and took it into the backyard and put it in the trash. I guess she didn't think it would be very festive for all the little kids to see that. I had to agree but I don't think I wouldn't have done that without gloves on. But to my mom it was nothing. Well, she grew up on a farm with five brothers so I guess things like that were old hat for her.
Sorry if that story was too graphic. I mean, I know it is halloween and all, but still. :)

By the way, what's this I hear about a halloween party? Where is it?
-Sterling Holobyte

October 28, 2005 - Msg 31163: Hey, Sterling! Good to see you. I must confess, I'd have done the same thing your mom did. Now if it had been out there for several hours I might not, but if it had just been recently killed I would have done it. In fact, I picked up a little mama squirrel out of my flowerbed one day, apparently poisoned by my idiot neighbor, who no doubt was trying to poison rats or mice. The squirel had five hard little lumps in her belly, probably just about ready to give birth. She had just died, actually still a bit warm. I was nearly in tears. My landscaper friend was here, and he very kindly took her from me, wrapped her in an old towel and took her home with him to bury her for me. He lives on some acreage north of town. I thought that was such a kind and considerate thing for him to do, but I know he loves the little critters as much as I do.

As for the Halloween party, I guess I could go as a nurse. That way I won't have to buy or make a costume, I have uniforms hanging in my closet! What do you all think?

Oh, I had a phone call today from TOM. He said the used computer someone had given him crashed and burned, so he's offline again. I told him I would contact Don and let him know. If you'll remember, he had told me he had a used machine that TOM could have, and tabled the matter when TOM got one from someone else. I imagine he still has it, and will follow through. If not, we may need to revive our old Plan A. I'll keep you posted.

Have a great weekend, everyone. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

October 28, 2005 - Msg 31171: Evenin', everyone. No, ky girl, no bats yet. Probably won't get any now, not until early spring. They migrate south for the winter. I'm not afraid of them, and they're very beneficial. There is an abandoned railroad tunnel near Fredericksburg, Texas, and one evening a few years ago, I stood on the rim of that tunnel as the Mexican freetail bats flew out for their nightly feeding session. The area had not been taken over by the state yet, and you could get right down to the tunnel. There are an estimated 3 MILLION bats in that cave, (see this website:

http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/huntwild/hunt/wma/find_a_wma/list/wildlife_management/old_tunnel_wma/bats_of_otwma/

You can copy and paste to get to it.) There's a good picture, and I stood right on top of that tunnel, as the bats swirled out and upward, so close to me that I could feel the wind from their wings. I guess Barney would have just expired on the spot. In twenty minutes of standing there, not one single bat ever touched me, though they were within a couple of inches of my face. Let me tell you, it was a giant thrill.

About your arthritis, ky girl, try taking about three Advil right after supper, then just before going to bed soak your hands in warm water for a couple of minutes, put on some lotion (sit the bottle in the water to warm it a little), then put on some cotton gloves for the night to keep your hands warm. It won't cure it, but it'll relieve a lot of the discomfort.

Well, guess I'll turn in. Sugarplum keeps hinting, she's ready to go cuddle and settle down for the night. She says hey! --Romeena

Gas is down to 1.99 here - HALLELUJAH! One year ago it was 1.92, so it's nice to be somewhat back to normal.

October 29, 2005 - Msg 31186: ky girl, I would think Advil (Ibuprofen) would work for just about any kind of arthritis. It's an anti-inflammatory drug, and arthritis is an inflammatory condition. It won't cure, but it sure does cool it off. Just be sure to take it with food - even a couple of crackers will do - and I wouldn't take more than eight in a day's time, at least not on a long-term basis. You could take 3 or 4 at once for an initial flareup, then cut back to 2 every 4-6 hours after that. That's advice from Romeena, from personal experience. That's not advice from my alter-ego, the nurse, who would not presume to practice medicine. Also, if you happen to be allergic to aspirin, check with a doctor before taking Ibuprofen, because there can be cross-sensitivity.

AFD, I'm happy for you that gas is down so low (relatively speaking) in your area. Here in Texas, a huge oil-producing state, we're still paying at least $2.50 for regular. Go figure. I still think Texas should secede from the US. We could, you know, all we have to do is say goodbye, and we're the only state that retains that legal right. We're a republic still, which also means that we're the only state whose flag can be flown at the same level as Old Glory. We usually don't do it, but it is legal to do so. OK, there's a bit of Texas trivia for you.

Well, gotta run. I'm going out with my friend Eloise tonight - her husband is on a fishing trip - and we're going to a nice restaurant, a Chinese buffet, whose Saturday night special is crab legs, all you care to eat! And only 8.99. They will lose money tonight, because I can put away the crab legs! With lemon butter! Whoooooeee! Gotta love it! Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

October 29, 2005 - Msg 31188: I'm back, and boy, am I full of crab legs and cold boiled shrimp. Yum! They have melted butter that you can spoon into little cups, and piles of fresh lemon. When I eat crab legs, I pull that big piece of crabmeat out of the long leg intact, and I know how to crack a claw so as to get the claw meat in one big hunk, too. Anything too small to eat like that just gets scraped into the butter/lemon cup, and when there's enough in there, you dip it out with a fork, just dripping with lemon butter and enjoy! Goo-oood! You should see my t-shirt, I'll never get all the butter out of it. My hands smell like a bait shop, too, even after I washed them. Guess I'd better put some lemon juice on them.
