You could hardly see for all the snow,
Spread the rabbit ears as far as they go.
Pull a chair up to the TV set,
"Good night, David; Good night, Chet".
Depending on the channel you tuned
You got Rob and Laura - or Ward and June.
It felt so good, felt so right.
Life looked better in black and white.
I Love Lucy, The Real McCoys
Dennis the Menace, the Cleaver boys
Rawhide, Gunsmoke, Wagon Train
Superman, Jimmy &Lois Lane.
Father Knows Best, Patty Duke
Opie, Barney Fife, and Lassie too,
Donna Reed on Thursday night--
Life looked better in black and white.
I wanna go back to black and white.
Everything always turned out right.
Simple people, simple lives
Good guys always won the fights.
Now nothing is the way it seems
In living color on the TV screen.
Too many murders, too much fight,
I wanna go back to black and white.
In God they trusted, in bed they slept.
A promise made was a promise kept.
They never cussed or broke their vows.
They'd never make the network now.
But if I could, I'd rather be
In a TV town in '53.
It felt so good, felt so right
Life looked better in black and white.
I'd trade all the channels on the satellite
If I could just turn back the clock tonight
To when everybody knew wrong from right
Life was better in black and white!

Hey, Bulbsnatcher. I'd be delighted to send you the Mongolia journal. Just give me your email address, or if you'd rather not post it here, email me at Romeena@airmail.net. I've posted mine so many times now that it doesn't bother me anymore. I have a good spamblaster. So far, this year's journal has 14 installments, and I anticipate about two or three more. Last year's ran to 21 before it was finished! There are pictures, too, in most of them. Beautiful place, Mongolia. Oh, and thanks for the kind comments about my scribbling. I do enjoy it.
I love that piece quoted above - and indeed, I think life WAS better in black and white! I have trouble imagining that in 50 years or so, people will be looking back on this decade and calling it "the good old days." If they can actually do that, then I think I don't want to know what their society is going to be like.
You've probably heard this before, but just in case you haven't - just imagine: In about 40 years this country will be full of old ladies with tattoos and holes in their lips and tongues. I can hear it now - "Granny, what's that blotch on your hip? It looks like a big wrinkled inkblot test. And did you know you're drooling through that hole in your lip?" (teehee)
Well, gotta take the grandson out front so he can ride his bike. He's only four, no way he's going out there alone. With Warren as the current deputy, I don't feel all that safe. He'll be too busy trying to arrest Goober for pitching pennies! Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Welcome to our Mayberry Porch, Daffy! Maybe you have been here before, but I believe I have not had the pleasure of meeting and greeting you. The memories of September 11 will always be with me. It is comforting to know that our nation is continuing to heal from the events of that tragic day.
Welcome to Fred also. I have read a couple of your posts, but I am afraid I have let the good graces of etiquette leave me, and I haven't said "hel-lo"! I hope you make yourself right at home here!
Report on brother-in-law. I saw him yesterday and he is doing well. He had his knee surgery on Thursday, and both legs are in braces. He can neither walk nor talk, but he finds a way to communicate! He is beginning to express some of his frustration at his situation, which is probably healthy because you need that fighter spirit. (Spot, as I recall you were in a terrible accident that required a long recovery...any words of comfort, advice or encouragement I could pass along to Mark?) Anyway, thanks for all the prayers. Awwww! Doggone it! A few of my little pigeon friends just landed to check out the smorgasbord, and I see that one of my favorites is injured. It's a beautiful bird, a sandy beige color with dark russet markings, and the poor thing has what appears to be a broken leg. It's hopping around on one foot, with its left leg sticking out at an odd angle. If I thought I could catch it without causing it more pain and possibly more injury, I'd do it and take it to the vet. Its poor little leg could probably be repaired, but I'm afraid to try to catch it. I guess that's just the way with wild things. At least it can fly, so maybe it won't fall prey to a cat or something, and it seems to manage to eat okay. I'll put out a little extra corn this evening.
Welcome back, MDC. Did you bring back any souvenirs, like maybe a pillow that says "Colorado Sporings" right there on it?

Spot, that gumbo sounds good. I like gumbo, but I don't think I'd want any from New Orleans right now. No tellin' what might be in it!
My creaky old memory can't be trusted, so I'll ask - were any of our folks from New Orleans? I sure hope not, or any of the other hard-hit cities either, though I guess N.O. got hit the worst. What a mess. I think we're going to need the old CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) to be resurrected, and some of those folks put to work to rebuild their city, if it's to be rebuilt. That would get the job done, and give folks a paycheck at the same time. This may not be a popular view, but in my opinion, the middle class will be the most affected. The welfare folks had their checks before, and they'll have them now, whether they're in Louisiana or Indiana, those checks will find them. Their housing will still be subsidized, too. It's the folks who were buying homes, and had jobs and cars who are going to suffer the most. They're still trying to pay their way, maxing out their credit cards, draining their savings, and many of them will have no job to go back to, either. Some do - there are folks already at work in Dallas, their employers (like UPS) just transferred them. Many others, though, will have nothing. The place where they worked is gone, washed away. Many people, for the first time in their lives, will have to resort to public assistance, and this is going to be painful for them. Others, however, who are used to receiving aid, are already becoming vocal about how "they" should "give us $20,000 apiece to get started on, because 'they' didn't protect us." You know who "they" are, don't you? It's us - you and I - the taxpayers. Makes me ill.
The granddaughter of a friend has been helping out in a shelter in Monroe, passing out box lunches. She said many people open the box, look inside and either hand it back to her or throw it away, declaring that they don't like what they were served. I guess they weren't very hungry.
Sorry. I didn't mean to get into that, and I don't mean to sound unsympathetic to the horrible ordeal so many thousands of people have just come through. I'd just like to see more of them putting more effort into rising to their feet, instead of wallowing in the disaster and depending on someone else to make things right. OK - the soapbox goes back under the porch.

Hey everybody! I have a few minutes to chat with you. Hope you are all well. We have been very busy around here as usual...not complaining, though. I read your post, Ro, and I have also wondered if any of our porch folks were from New Orleans or the area. I have had the blessing of being able to help out with the evacuees that are in my area (Corpus Christi). The night the busses arrived here at our Coliseum, I helped to triage people who were sick or injured. Mainly we jusat treated minor wounds but I heard some really tragic stories from the evacuees. We also had a shelter near my home and I was able to help out there some. Anyway, my experience has been a very positive one and the folks have been very thankful. Just this morning I took a sweet elderly lady named Joyce to the dr. I met her when she came in on a bus at the Coliseum and she is almost eighty and was totally alone. She had been at the convention center in New Orleans for 6 days after fleeing her home when it flooded. I found a loving family to care for her near my home and she has been recovering from her ordeal. When they finally contacted one of her relatives, they said they didn't want her. Its very sad. Anyway, she will be taken care of. We have many families in the area that have decided to stay here and find jobs and they are needing help getting started.
MDC, Colorado Springs is one of my favorite places. I dearly love it and would love to live there. Did you go to The North Pole or to Garden of The Gods?? I always stay in Manitou Springs and we go to The North Pole every time, for the kids. We like to visit in December when there is snow (I have a snow fetish).
Well, after reading those posts about tatooed old ladies, I am tempted to get one somewhere just to see where it ends up years from now...
Better go. My love to all. I will try to read the archives at some point and post again!

Hey, Boo! I got your email, but there was no snail mail address included. I answered by email, let me know if you get it. Also, thanks for sharing some positive words about your experience with the evacuees. I've been thinking about it, and I have the idea that experiences are going to be mostly good or mostly bad, depending on location. The buses that came to your area probably picked up most of their passengers in one place, while the buses that ended up in Monroe may have come from another area. There's often a "community mindset", for lack of a better description, and people who come from a background of being handed everything without working for it are going to be harder to deal with than folks who are in touch with their own bootstraps and know how to give them a yank when they need help getting back on their feet. I know, there are exceptions in both camps, and I'm willing to help those who are willing to help themselves, whether they came out of a suburb or a project, it doesn't matter. Boo's story of the poor lady whose family doesn't want her pretty well showcases the atti-tude of some of the people we're going to be dealing with, though. Imagine saying you "don't want" an elderly family member.
I have a good friend who needs prayers for a situation in his life Without going into details, I'll just say it is personal, has to do with family relationships and apparently, a lack of respect from people who should know better. Thanks, folks.
I'm not sure that the "TOM" who posted recently is our old friend, our TOM. I've written to him to be sure, but there are a couple of things that make me think it was not he. I'll let you know what I find out.

I have finally started getting pretty busy with my business, & I am LOVING it! I did the cutest little Poodle today, she just wanted to play with me instead of getting groomed. I wasn't sure if I would like going to the homes to groom, but this way I get to see the dog's REAL personality. I do enjoy grooming this way. AND I don't have to tie a rope around the dog's neck to make them follow me home either!

Asa, how can you be so heartless? Snow? Now?? It's 89 here now, will probably get into the 90's before the day is over. We have some cloud cover or it would be there already. I'm glad you're enjoying the journal - it's really fun to write. Getting near the end, though.
My little hummingbird friend is still around. He comes in every few minutes, almost all day long. My favorite part is when he comes up to my window and just hangs there, beak to glass, watching me as I watch him. Fragile little thing, but pugnacious as a bobcat. Believe me, when anybody else, including a wasp, comes around his feeder, he takes no prisoners. He perches on a phone line a few feet away, and just watches. It's hilarious.
Something is methodically digging up the ferns along the side of my house. I've got about thirty feet of ferns out there, and every night, something digs about half of them up. Needless to say, they're getting a bit tattered. Whatever it is throws the dirt onto the stepping-stone pathway along there, and I have to sweep it every day. I'm about to try setting up a video camera one night to see if I can catch the culprit. My son has one that does night-vision, very clear and sharp. Of course, I don't know what I'll do with the culprit if I find out what it is. I refuse to hurt it, and am afraid even to relocate it for fear it might have babies somewhere. Unless it's a male. In that case, away it goes, assuming I can catch it. I have a small humane live trap, but I have a hunch this is a big animal, maybe a raccoon. Still can't figure why it's digging up my ferns, though, unless it's after earthworms in the damp dirt. I have a dripline along there and the soil is always damp, and there are lots of worms.

September 15, 2005 - Msg 30401:
Well - REv Jr and Mayberry Deputy - I would say that you have the corner on "great" school boards but last year before the big snow had become the big snow, we teachers had to report in for a teacher day as the kids were already on Christmas break. All of drive in at least 4-5 inches of snow and left when it was about 6 -7 inches of snow. Our director of special education wanted to make sure that we had our Christmas meal together and then we could leave. When the caterers called and said they couldn't make it she insisted that we have our gift exchange. No one thought that was important but her and believe me it was a white elephant gift exchange so our presents weren't anything that couldn't wait. So - I think administrations don't always think so well. . .and to think most of them started out as teachers. Go figure?!

My, what a country this is. Even in spite of all the carping and whining and blame-throwing that's spewing from some quarters, people are still willing to pitch in and try to help those who need it, and many of the evacuees are seeing the situation for what it really was. It was an act of nature, a freakish, violent storm, and there wasn't very much anyone could have done any better than it was done. There were some mistakes, of course. The first one was made a long time ago, when the inadequate levees were built. The next one was made when Louisiana refused the federal aid that was offered to them, to strengthen the levees. The third was when the mayor of New Orleans didn't order evacuation. The fourth was when a lot of people refused to leave after the order was finally given.
I just had to laugh last night, after the President's speech, as one man-on-the-scene interviewer (obviously a Democrat) tried his very best to get some evacuees at the Superdome to make some anti-Bush comments, and they wouldn't do it. He asked his questions every way he could think of, and they just wouldn't say what he was trying to get them to say. One woman finally did say that she thought the mayor should have called for evacuation sooner, and another one said that when the call was issued, she refused, saying she didn't really believe it would be that bad. "Guess I was wrong," she said. Ha! I love it! I know GW is a powerful man, but he doesn't cause hurricanes, and he can't stop them, and he can't make people do the right thing when they refuse to do it. OK, that's my soapbox for today.

Doggone it, they're only open on weekdays, though, not on Saturday or Sunday. Guess I'll have to wait until Monday to silence that craving, but that's a long time to wait. Anybody know the incant for cravin'-silencing?
Well, gotta run. Today would be the third birthday of the little grandson we lost, and his other grandma and I are going out to the cemetery. It's a sad time, yes, but bittersweet as well. We all learned a lot from that experience, about God's supportive, comforting love and grace. I learned a lot of respect for my son and DIL as well, as they conducted themselves so beautifully through it all. My DIL is active in a support group, helping others to cope, and has really shown herself to be a person of great strength and maturity.
