Smoky Mt Hillbilly - Prayers, you got em bro!
One second here is all you need to "earn' soapbox status! Think of Bunker Hill and all since to be a free society. It is in those words of Patrick Henry, to those long forgotten minutemen, to the trenches of I and II, to the rice patties, to the current terror war that brings it all into perspective. My daily prayer is for God's protection on our soldiers, as He protected his people thru the centuries. But even Israel is in turmoil today due to current situation. I stand on the Word everyday, or I'd be the number one basket case! I cant thank these young men and women enough for their sacrifice. May God help us.
Thanks for your contribution to our little porch.
My prayers are with that soldier and his whole family and friends, for sure. God bless you too!

Thanks to ya'll (and Tom Bodett) for keepin' the light on for me. Been such a crazy summer. Just got back from a week in Florida. I got a kick out of your plane story, Romeena, about the dumb doofus with the cold. It was our kids' first flying experience and I think they enjoyed it--other than having to wait an extra two-three hours for our plane in Dee-troit. You can bet that's how we kept saying it too--Dee-troit--just like O'Malley. Thanks, Dixie Belle for keeping my chair dusted off. Are you done with school now or what's next? Great to see ya'll--you sure are a sight for sore eyes. And, no, I didn't run off with no shoe salesman.

Goober, my condolences for your father. I haven't read the archives yet, but I read above where you were just getting back from his funeral. I am sure he is in a much better place now, what with his mansion and all! Praise God for the comfort He alone can give us!
Romeena, I read the first two installments of your trip, and I am on pins and needles to read more! I am telling you, you should try your hand at writing professional-like! Maybe a biography type book of your life, or maybe even fiction. I bet you would be excellent at it! Anyway, I am looking forward to your next installment!
MDC, I can't answer either one of your questions! Shame on me! But I did see the epilogue yesterday for the show in which Barney gets Blue, the part blood hound, part something else! I never saw that ending with Andy and Barney in one cell, and the criminal in the other cell and they are both trying to get Blue to come to them with the keys in his mouth! Priceless!
Hey to Asa!

Guess I better get on up out of this here rocker and commence to getting a little more work done around here!

Howdy, all. Thanks, Mary Wiggins, for the kind words. I do enjoy writing, and would just love to retire from nursing and write for a little extra money, but can't seem to find my niche. Well, maybe someday...
I went back to the doctor today to get the results of the MRI of my knee that was done Monday. Seems I have "strained" a large ligament that anchors the knee along the inside, and have completely blown the ACL. The ligament will repair itself in time, but the ACL is a goner. The only fix for that is surgical repair, and the doc says that surgery involves a longer, tougher rehab than a total knee replacement. Hard to imagine, but that's what he said. Knee surgeries are outside my sphere of experience in nursing, so I don't have much to go on except what he says. Since I am mobile, can walk as long as I don't stress the knee or make any sudden moves, we're going to try bracing it and some physical therapy to strengthen the muscles in that leg, but it may still need surgery. Worth a try, though. I'll do the surgery if I must, but I'd rather not.
Well, guess I'll go settle down for a while and give the Plum some overdue cuddling. Have a great weekend, everyone. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Hello friends.........been a while i know. So much has happened since i was here last. My marriage has ended and it has been hard to handle. Made a good friend, and that has gradually turned into love..(we met on the net)......six months it took me to admit to myself how I feel for Steven. I finally admitted it to myself and to him and then two weeks ago he had a stroke. He was in critical care, so I piled into my car and went to New Jersey and spend a week with him. He was not conscious and on a ventalator. I talked to him for days just as i would if he could have answered me. And on the day I planned to leave, I told him that I had prayed that God would show me that he could hear me. I said, I have to leave in five minutes to go home....and he opened his eyes...I asked if he knew who i was and he squeezed my hand and i asked if he wanted me to stay and again the squeeze......the progress since this time...is amazing. He is talking and being a demanding pain in the hiney! He is off tube feedings, ventalator, oxygen, EVERYTHING! They are starting Physical and Speech therapy this week. Tho he seems to have no trouble talking or making what he wants known....LOL
Anyway Paryers for my Steven and for Rosa, my niece, who they belive my have a mild form of autism.

Got my knee brace today. Knee brace? More like half my leg brace! The thing is huge, with hinges and straps and velcro closings. It's quite light, but sure is big. I don't know how long I can put up with it, and the problem is, it's not necessarily a temporary thing. ACL tears don't fix themselves. The fix is surgery, or just hope to strengthen my leg muscles enough to compensate. I've really got to be thinking this through. At my age, I don't want to be falling a lot - I'll eventually break something that I might need. So, we'll see. I'll try the therapy route first, but if that doesn't work, then I'm not afraid of surgery.

Romeena, my daughter had to get that knee surgery some years ago, and her recovery has been excellent. If you are active, you might want to consider it, but I would get the very best doctor you can find. My daughter was fortunate to have the same doctor who handles the Detroit Lions and a few other semi-pro teams in this area, and he was very good. She did try therapy, but it really didn't have the results we were hoping for. She re-injured the knee within a year. After the surgery and rehab, she played soccer, college basketball, ran track...in other words, she recovered. It was hard work though. Something to think about...
Hey Quiet Sam, please send some of your corn up this way! I sure do love fresh produce this time of year. The tomatoes have been awesome!
Johnny H. I have seen that episode, but I don't know where to steer you to find it. I am sure one of our more experienced porchsters can find that out for you!

Been wet, wet, wet here - got all the rain for the summer in one week. Lightening blew out the satellite dish. Good thing I have signed up for the dish network to be put in this week. A really huge tree up the road in a little cemetary took a direct hit as well, fell on a pole and the old electric company got us hooked back up to electric about 10 last nite. The boys for awhile used the flashlight and did hand shadows on the wall. Been a interesting night into morning -

Well, here I am again....hanging tough and keeping God busy with my prayers. I talk to the nurse daily about Steven and am hoping that soon his strength will return and he will be able to hold the phone so we can talk. He has good strength on the right side, but not on the left. He came out of the coma a week ago on Friday and since then he is speaking, moving the leg and arm on the left side and on Thursday they let him eat. I am trying to be patient and know that it will take time before we know what he is left with.....in the mean time i would appreciate your prayers. I know it was nothing short of a gift from God that he came out of the coma and I am praying and expecting a miraculous recovery. Something that will amaze everyone.
Kyle is doing good homemaker, thanks for asking. He started high school this year and seems to be adjusting well. He is back in the same school as his best friend from Kindergarten, tho they do not have any classes together.
My little Rosa is precious...but shows many signs of moderate autism...no eye contact, and is not a social child at all...only wants her mother. She is not speaking. She was two in July. Her mama works at Riley, so i am sure she will get the best treatment available. But needless to say it has been hard on my sister. She just lost a baby in July, and now this. Prayers for Chris, Lisa, and Rosa as well as my Steven and I......
Thank you porch friends. I am praying for all those who ask for it.

The issue now is this miserable knee. At this moment, as I think I told you all, the doctor wants me to wear that fan-dangled brace and do some PT to try to strengthen the muscles around the knee. It's not going to fix the ACL, and I'm not sure that we're doing the right thing. The knee is very unstable right now, and unless the PT does wonders, I can picture a scenario in a few years where the knee gives way and drops me to the ground, with a broken hip. I'm thinking maybe I'd rather go through the ACL repair now and come out with a stable knee. My kids seem to be divided in their opinion, and I really don't know what to do. I have a call in for my doctor right now, and we'll discuss it.
Spot, that boat sounds great. 55, now that's fast on water! If that lake is crowded, you be careful now, you hear? We don't want you getting all busted up again.

MDC, your point is well taken. Unlike Emma Brand/Watson, who admits to being in her 40's, I'm 66 and don't care who knows it. I don't consider myself old, but I do recognize that I'm younger today than I ever will be again. (Now there's something to think about!) I really don't relish the idea of knee surgery, but I'm not too crazy about the alternatives, either. I have jury duty tomorrow, which will involve about a 2 1/2 block walk from the train station to the courthouse. I'll see how the knee performs, and how I feel when I get home. Lots to consider....
Spot, if I bring my steak, will you cook it for me? I like mine rare - just knock the horns and hooves off and trot it past the fire. The Plum is wondering how some carrots would taste if you grilled 'em, so she's bringing some.

Good Afternoon Porchsters! I hope everyone is having a great Mayberry Day! SPOT the steak and breakfast was excellent THANKS! Had a wonderful time at the ball game my 6 yr old Dalton's first year to play got the game ball last night! Yeah! He had a 3 hits for 3 turns at bat(2 of the turns at bat the bases were loaded!), he had 3RBI's and 2 field outs playing first base! Proud Hillbilly Paw here in case you didn't notice. I did embarras my wife and her parents who were at the game by climbing the fence when he knocked 3 runs home and made it to 3rd base...what is so bad is that I didn't realize that I had climbed the fence until the play was over! Ha! MDC - that is great info on the umpire career of Andy and that piece of trivial on the call and Helen's camera...no close call like that last night but what a true American tradition it was last night to be at the ball field on a summer night with family, friends and neighbors enjoying a game being played by our little ones playing who are playing for nothing else but the sheer fun of it! Praise God some things that have made America the land we enjoy are still in place and is being protected by men and women around the world. On that note I would like to give you the latest update I have on soldier Kevin "With the families' permission, let me update you on Kevin's fight ... Kevin is now in a army hospital in Texas. Due to the impact of the bomb, Kevin has now lost both of his feet, amputated about mid-calf. He is due in surgery this Wednesday to reconstruct his elbow. He is undergoing ONgoing skin grafts to correct the burns over his legs and arms. (The doctors were able to save skin from his feet to use in the grafts.)
The doctors talked with Kevin about his injuries. They told him that his face and upper torso look good, his arms and legs suffered major burns, his legs and arm are broken. They told him he's lost both feet to amputation. Shannon was able to talk to him afterward and while Kevin is unable to respond conversationally, he shook his head yes and no. She asked him if he was mad? "No". Are you angry? "No" Are you going to get through this okay? "Yes".
Thank You for your continue support and prayers not only for this soldier and his family but for all of our service men and women stationed everywhere and the families who have paid the extreme price.
Been here a short time but I consider everyone here my friends and my nieghbors in Mayberry wherever you are keeping those truths and values alive!

homemaker, you're now on the journal list. I'll send you the first seven, and then you'll get the rest as they go out.
MDC - sure! Here you go:
We knew we had been invited to a true Mongolian barbecue, and we gathered there in eager anticipation of the meal. Now, most of us have eaten at restaurants that feature Mongolian barbecue, and we have a pretty good idea what to expect there. Well, let me tell you, it's not the same in Mongolia. Those Mongolians don't know the first thing about how to do Mongolian barbecue, if you ask me!
First of all, the meat to be barbecued is goat meat. It's not bought at the local supermarket, either. A goat is selected and brought to the area and killed on the spot. Anyone who knows me at all knows just about how much I liked that idea. I'm the world's biggest hypocrite when it comes to eating meat. I'll buy chicken and steak and pork chops at the store, in nice neat little packages, and never give a second thought to how that meat got in those packages. I'll eat venison, too, but I could never pull the trigger and shoot a deer. So, I was struggling with the notion of the poor goat being so freshly killed, just over a little rise, barely out of our sight. Then one of my friends, Angela, put it into words that just stopped me cold. She said she saw them leading the goat over the rise, and "he thought he was going to the party, and then ggkkkkk" and she made a slicing motion across her throat. Well, that did it for me. No way was I going to be able to eat that little goat.
The meat is prepared in a strange fashion. It's basically just cut into chunks, placed into a metal container and more or less buried in hot coals. It cooks very quickly. In no time at all, one of Jerry's kids was standing in front of me with a plate and a big anticipatory smile. Obviously, this was a real treat in her eyes, and she was anxious for me to enjoy it, too. I took the plate, eyed the chunk of gristly meat and the rib bone sticking out, and wondered if I could actually eat it. Pulling a shred of the meat off, I put it in my mouth and managed to choke it down. It had a gamey taste, which I usually don't find objectionable. As I said, I like venison, and I've eaten wild turkey as well, and liked it. Somehow, though, this was different. I think it was mostly an emotional thing, but I just couldn't get past the mental picture of the little goat, prancing along on his way to the party, and then his untimely, totally unexpected demise. I pushed the food around on my plate for a few minutes, then managed to put it down a few feet away from where I was sitting, and hoped no one noticed. If they did, they were kind enough not to say anything.
OK, that's the goat story. The rest of the story is in the journals.
