May 24, 2005 - Msg 28905: I know how you feel, Alyce. We are in the process of moving also. Would like to just take it slooooowwww. Try to keep your chin up, and remember that things will seem less hectic later on when all of this is behind you.

I was sad to hear of Howard Morris passing. My favorite recurring character that Ernest T.

I'm hoping I can take my own advice that I gave Alyce, as moving is a big pain, especially when you are not sure it is the right thing to do. Speaking of big pains ;), my MIL is also coming up for Memorial Day, only she is coming a little early, like tomorrow.
And here I thought that this week was stressful enough with the moving and all.
What's that saying, God doesn't give you any problem that you can't handle?. Well, I guess I can handle it, I just don't want to.

Oh, and here's a warning to be cautious on the internet. I am officially a member of the stolen ident-ities club. Someone somehow got ahold of my debit card number and my address and used it to buy a Sprint cell phone using an automatic payment plan. Luckily there were only two charges on it; one for $75, the other for $33. Sprint wouldn't refund the money because they said they would have to ask the person who used the account to buy the cell service if it would be ok to refund it. You heard right. I don't understand it either. I thought I was the owner of the bank account.
Anyway, the bank locked the debit cards service and we destroyed the actual cards and began the transaction dispute procedure at the bank. The bank at least said that they are crediting the money back to us.
I guess I'm back to using checks for everything.

By the way God, about those problems, you're laying them on a bit thick. No offense. :)

Sorry if I sound grumpy or anything, I don't mean too. I did have a great time with Kai today driving a load of junk to the new house. She was very willing to help carry stuff in, what she could lift anyway. A good little helper. And it was a fun drive with her too. I treated her to vanilla milk shakes(her choice) on the drive back and we sang some of her made up songs like "is a pig"(don't ask). :)

Have a good night everyone!

Someone had asked about the Home makeover show last Sunday on the AZ reservation. Yes, very moving. She was the first Indian female from AZ to die in such a military role. They named a mountain after her too here in AZ.
WELCOME BACK ALL PORCHSTERS! Still keeping the APB open for all the missing ones.

May 25, 2005 - Msg 28913: Howdy, all. Yep, MDC, I heard from TOM not long ago - I posted a poem from him, did you miss it? Or has that been longer ago than I remember? That's possible.

To you and Sterling, speaking as a mother and a MIL, I can only recommend patience to the extent that you can bear it. Sometimes we old gals get ourselves in hot water without intending to, and then some folks are just plain mean and hateful. Whichever you're dealing with, though, you can never go wrong by taking the high road. Your spouse will appreciate it, and if it's your own mom that's trying your patience, your conscience will be lighter in the end.

Wow! Season Two should be arriving before long. I can hardly wait.

May 25, 2005 - Msg 28919: Anybody want to come over and have an owl-watch party with me? The little owl I saw and described for you a while back has returned a few times, always just at the point between "can see and can't see". The other night he was perched on the birdbath again and I didn't see him, walked right up to within about four feet, when he finally flew, but he didn't go far, just a few feet to a squirrel feeder on a nearby tree. Then he just sat there and watched me, as I was watching him. What a thrill! So now every evening, when I can, I station myself here at my window and watch for him. I don't see him every day, but just enough to keep me interested. Nature is a wonder!

He was such a great talent, and actually quite a nice-looking guy when he wasn't pulling a comic face. I've noticed that about comic actors. Many of them are quite handsome when they're not being funny, and almost all are very good serious actors as well. Mickey Rooney could just break your heart in a serious role.

Well, got things to do. Grandson on the way over, will keep him while his other grandma gets her hair done. Should be fun! He's talking a little bit now, and has started putting two words together already. Yep, he says "NO-NO!" just as plain as can be! (teehee)

I too am worried about Pappa Bear. He never usually stays away this long.

Well, Kai had her "graduation" picnic today. She had a great time playing with her classmates, for what will probably be the last time. Hopefully not though, we will try to keep in touch with at least some of them after the move.
One touching moment was when things were winding down but Kai and some of the other kids were playing on the playground. A young boy(about Kai's age), who wasn't in Kai's class but was just at the park with his mother, came over to where we were sitting on some playground equipment and asked if he could play with Kai's bottle of bubbles that she had gotten as a gift from the teachers. I said sure, and he proceeded to blow a bunch of bubbles and then said, "I'm sending these bubbles up to my dad. He died."
Almost broke my heart.
We let him keep the bubbles, after asking his mom if it was alright, of course.
Kai was very sweet about it after she asked me where her bubbles went, and I told her why I gave her bubbles away.

Have a happy Memorial Day weekend everyone.

As we start this Memorial Day weekend, I think of my dad's WWII group and how so many are gone now.
For the last 15 years they have had yearly reunions, but now with so few left, they are talking about not doing them any more. It's sad.
Some of us kids are talking about keeping it going til the last man so to speak. They are having one this summer in Colorado Springs, which I will attend with him, as he is now 87.
He has multiple decorations for distinguished flying etc, yet when he came home, he went back to his trade of typesetter, and never piloted again.
You may recall, he and I went and saw the only restored A-20 airplane left. (last summer) It was so moving to watch him see that plane again, 60 years later!
Well, have a good weekend, and take a moment to recall a fallen soldier, past and present! Thanks.
God bless you.

May 27, 2005 - Msg 28951: Best to just ignore the moulage. Floyd will get the IP.
Sterling- It is A-20 Havoc medium range bomber that actually was first built as an attack aircraft, thus the "A" determination. But they found out in the pacific theater that it was too slow for that. But it worked well for bomb runs from the coast of England into Germany and back.
(A google search under "A-20 aircraft" will bring up good info)
He never talked about the war much until about the last ten years. He now wants future generations to know the total committment that many Americans invested to keep our shores safe, and us safe to sit here today and talk back and forth in freedom...or, as the third verse of America the Beautiful says "...with liberty in LAW." Many of his 65 missions ended in crash landings due to flak damage, yet he and his two-man crew survived them all, for which he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.
(Us kids didnt even know he was decorated until about 8 years ago when we went to one of his reunions!)
This weekend we honor all those whose blood was shed on foreign soil protecting America's SOVEREIGNTY! We MUST remain sovereign and not blur our borders as Europe has done or it WILL be our demise. Thank you porchsters for your prayers and caring for the time I have been here with you.
Hope to continue for many more years.

And wow, I'm always impressed by the daring skills of our fly-boys in any war. I don't mean to minimize the ground and sea troops; I hold them up with the same respect. It's just that I am really interested in fighter and bomber pilots, their aircraft and the like.
I hope your Dad knows how we treasure people like him who served their country and protected and still do protect us. And I'm glad he returned with his crew from all those missions. They are real survivors!

I watched the TVLand ET show about "All in the Family" this morning. I've seen it before, but it's still interesting. The scenes of Carroll O'Connor as he was dealing with his son's suicide are so moving. You gotta hand it to him, he waded into that drug dealer like a windmill in a tornado, and didn't back up. When the scumbag tried to sue him for slander, Carroll won, and went on to get some serious legialation passed, that allows prosecution of dealers as accessories to whatever problems their clients may get into. Irishter! It's so good to hear from you. I'm sure I'm speaking for everyone when I say, we hope you'll return often. We've missed you. There are a lot of new folks on the porch, and they're just great folks, fine citizens of Mayberry. You'll love 'em!

May 29, 2005 - Msg 28977: No too far from bedtime on this side of the Porch, although my head may not hit the pillow till 11.00!

May 29, 2005 - Msg 28978: Well, Irishter! Good to see you again!

I'm just sitting at home. Don't have to go to see the MIL and all her "friends" today. Now, normally I'd be happy about that but I'd rather have to do that then have my little Kai sick, which is why I am at home and not at all the Memorial Day weekend "festivities".
Yep, Kai woke me up whimpering at 6:00 and when I felt her she was just hot. Took her temp and it was 101.9. After we gave her some medicine and a cool-gel patch for her forehead, it went down to 100, but she is still warm.
I never like it when she has a fever. Head colds I don't mind as much, but when she has a fever her little heart starts beating harder and faster, and she doesn't need any more strain on her heart.
She was fine yesterday. Just having a ball! But she did come into contact with alot of people, so I don't know if she picked something up or what, but prayers would be appreciated. They can only help and they can't hurt.

Now, who's grilling out on the porch since I can't have any brats, hot dogs or hamburgers in real life today? Or should I start it? Be warned though, I'm not very good with the grill! Unless you like things very well done.

-Sterling Holobyte

May 29, 2005 - Msg 28979: Oh, Sterling, I'm so sorry Kai is sick. I know you're taking wonderful care of her, lots of fluids and all. See that she empties her little bladder often, too. It's a matter of physics - hot stuff out, cold stuff in, will help the body cool down. Of course, kids can run up a temp at a moment's notice, and lots of times we never know the reason. I'm sure she'll be fine. I understand that you worry a little extra for her, though, with her history, and certainly she'll have some extra prayers from your porch friends.

MDC

May 29, 2005 - Msg 28984: Oh, yeah, MDC, I've got mine! Got it about the middle of the week - already watched the first disc. So good! Commercials and everything. Who wouldn't love hearing Andy saying "I 'preciate it, and good night!" again. How well I remember.

Oh, to answer your question, I'm an RN. 12 years in med/surg, 5 more years all over the house, doing a bit of everything, and 9 years now in postpartum. I loved med/surg, but left the more "exciting" part of nursing when my dear husband died. I just didn't have what it took to face the drama anymore. Postpartum isn't exactly quiet, but emotionally, it's a bit safer. It has some bad moments, but not often.

Yes, I loved Eddie Albert, too. Great talent. Who can forget him as Ali Hakim, the "peddler man" in "Oklahoma!" Then of course, as Oliver Wendell Douglas, he'll live on forever.

Rainy here today, much cooler than it has been. Pansies are perking up, may get a last hurrah out of them until the heat descends again. Daylilies are blooming beautifully, roses are about spent but will bloom again soon, and petunias are lovely right now. I just love all the color!

Hey Romeena, check your first set of DVD's and you'll be surprised that there are only 4 rifles in the rack! Sometime in the first year they added two more and the number stayed at 6 from then on! Just got my 2nd set and already enjoying them and the commericals, especially when Opie pops up and says "cause that's all I got,Barney"!! speaking of the Sanka jars! Well got to catch up on my paperwork. Ya'll take care and rockem easy on the porch! Quiet Sam!

May 30, 2005 - Msg 28990: Hey, Quiet Sam! I knew I remembered seeing only four rifles in that rack, but you're right, later on there are six.

You know, we haven't seen Pappa Bear since before the porch was swept the last time. Has anybody looked in the bushes? Maybe he got swept off, and if the shrubbery is anything like the vinca and peppermint in my yard, he could be held captive down there and never get out! I'm getting a bit concerned - those of you who have his email address, please give him another little nudge, OK?

My handyman friend was here today, moved the power outlet for the fountain several feet away, so we can revise and expand the fountain. My landscaper friend will be here later in the week to do the fountain work. Sure is nice having these fellers who are so capable, and so trustworthy. For us widder ladies, that's pretty important. I thank the good Lord for them.

Well, guess I'll try to get a little nap on this rainy afternoon, since I have to work tonight. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Saw bits and pieces of the Indy 500 yesterday via the news - David Letterman sure looks old and so did Bobby Rahal (they owned Danica's car). She did great! I remember when AJ Foyt and Johnny Rutherford were the names to root for.

Take care. . .

Sterling,I will pray for Kai. I know after Laci's heart surgery we were told to always watch for signs of unknown fever and to contact her cardiologists if it got too high. Luckily, she's been fine and I'm hoping Kai will be too.

Hey to Irishter/ Naaspreacher! Glad you've joined us here in Mayberry.
Rain? You should've seen what I drove through this morning on my way to work-torrential rains. May 30, 2005 - Msg 29000: Irishter, I'm trying to think of some identifiers that would help you determine if our Pappa Bear is the one you know. He was known to us as Pipeman for a long time, until he quit smoking, put away his pipes and changed his name to Pappa Bear. I know he's a racing fan, and I do believe he frequents some TV Western websites. Does that help? I must add, I'm quite concerned about him. His health is not good, and we haven't heard from him in over a week, which is very unusual. APB for Pappa Bear!

HI Gang, hope all had a wonderful memorial day.
Did you know that at 3 pm yesterday baseball games and many other venues paused in remembrance of our fallen hereos? very moving. On our PBS channel last night they aired a program about our Army Rangers rescuing 500 of our men from a Japanese POW camp that they were running during their Philipine occupation. It was amazing to see what these 18-19 year old men did! With no care for their own lives they raided the camp and freed our soldiers. God bless that generation that is now dying at the rate of 1000 a day.
Thank God for our present generation who have also answered the call. It's just too bad they won't let them fight the way our guys did in WWII!
We would have been out of there a year ago if they would just let us do the job instead of being so PC about it all! OK, soapbox back under the porch.
HM- That's why I come here to the porch. The "local" news is nice to hear. Sorry about my vent above!
Here's a trivia question for you all:
When did the gun rack get a crossbar and a lock?
Ro- I emailed pappa bear a few days ago. No answer as yet. Sure am praying for him!
Quiet Sam, the FAQ section of this website explains that they did change Clara's name a few times. No one is sure why. But for the "sake of the show" one could explain that Bertha could have been a "middle" name and Johnson, her maiden name,
thus all is well in Mayberry! haha
HAVE A GREAT DAY!

Got to take Kai down to the Dr. in a little bit. Made an appointment today as she was coughing up a storm last night and today.
I know I said she was better, but that's because I thought she was. It's weird, on Sunday she had that high fever. Then on Monday she had no fever and it looked like she was over it, aside from being a bit tired at times. Then yesterday and today(and especially last night) her coughing has been increasing.
Don't mean to worry anyone. She's pretty normal except for the coughing; not warm or anything. Just want to get it checked out. Thanks for your prayers and have a good day!
