March 04, 2005 - Msg 27450: I have another request. There is a wonderful lady that works at the Mount Airy Visitor's Center. (home of the Andy Griffith collections)
Her name is Miss Bertie. She is having open heart bypass surgery early next week and is in need of fervent prayers. She is one of the dearest, kindest, and most sincere people that I know. Please keep her in your prayers for a full recovery, so that she can get back to what she loves the most....making people feel truely welcome in "Mayberry". Thank you.

March 05, 2005 - Msg 27459: Good morning, all! I've been "out of pocket" the past few days - worked two nights, tree-trimming men here one day, lots going on. One severed tree limb, though securely roped off, took an unexpected swing and just swept one of my squirrel houses right off the trunk of the tree. It fell about 20 feet, and landed flat on its back wall. The crew boss and I ran to it, and to our horror, there were five baby squirrels in it. The front wall was torn away, and they looked like they were lying in a big shoebox. All appeared unhurt. The crew boss tacked the little house back together and I took it inside so the babies would stay warm. They have their fur, but are still very tiny and helpless. Before the men left, they put the little house back up.
I watched all afternoon, but had to leave for work at 6pm. Then I watched the next morning after I got home atound 8. I never saw the mama, but there was a starling making himself at home, going in and tossing the nest material out. I called the tree man, and he sent a climber to get the babies out, I figured it was their only chance. Guess what!!! No babies! At some point, the good little mama squirrel had returned and moved her family. Isn't God good??

March 05, 2005 - Msg 27460: Sterling, I know how you feel, with your folks being in an accident. A few years ago, while my parents were still living and my dad was still driving, they were in a wreck. They were driving across a street, headed to the parking lot where I was parked - we were going to meet up for lunch. I saw the whole thing happen, and almost died on the spot. I saw a speeding car just T-bone their car, right at my dad's door. I was sure they were both killed or badly injured, but no, they were just fine. Not a bruise or a scratch. Yes, they were wearing seatbelts. The car was totalled. Again, God is good.

Charlotte Tucker, you tell that young'un not to drink anything but bottled water or sodas, unless they're staying in a 4-star hotel, which I doubt if this is a mission trip. Also, remind him that ice is made from water! I've seen people pour their sodas over ice, then wonder why they get sick. He should wash his hands often, but use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer afterward. Remember, he's washing in local water. Also, he must eat NOTHING bought from a street vendor, or anything fresh (uncooked) even in a restaurant. No salads. I ate some fresh salsa (stupid) at a sidewalk cafe, and I have never been so sick in my life. I'd have to have gotten better to die. This was in Mexico City. I wouldn't eat or drink anything that I didn't bring with me in any of the border towns. It's called Montezuma's revenge, of course, and all I can say is, Montezume must be really mad, because his revenge is really awful.

Well, gotta go put out critter feed. Homemaker, I'd sure love to see your little goats. They're such cute little things, so playful and lively.

Have a great day, everyone. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

March 07, 2005 - Msg 27476: 'Morning, everybody! Woohooo! I see the second season will be available in May, and there's going to be at least a third season as well. I can hardly wait!

With all the talk earlier of "pulled pork", which I had never heard of, I've decided to make some and use Rev Jr.'s sauce on it. Sounds delish!

I made a really great soup (I guess it's soup) Saturday. Brown a pound of ground beef in a deep pan. Add a couple of chopped onions and cook a bit more. Then add one can each of whole kernel corn, black beans, pinto beans, red kidney beans, chopped green chilies and one or two cans of diced tomatoes. Simmer for about ten minutes, and add a half pound of Velveeta cheese. It will melt in and make the most delicious, creamy rich soup you ever ate. So good it'd make you sass a bear!

I visited the little town of Waxahachie (south of Dallas) on Friday, and bought a copy of "Aunt Bee's Mayberry Cookbook" there. Some really good recipes in it, and some script passages. Fun reading!

Possum, I can't believe our little Laci is already a year and a half old. My, how time does fly! And praise the Lord, she's healthy!

Well, off I go. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

March 07, 2005 - Msg 27477: Oh, Rev Jr., I'm sorry about your wife's uncle. You're right, 63 sounds younger every day. My dear husband was only 58 when the Lord took him home. That was very, very hard to accept. Prayers for the family. Expect a lot of different emotions from them. Just accept whatever they do or say, and don't try to reason with them or offer comforting sentiments. They don't work. Just be there, tell them you're sorry, and let them vent. Whatever you do, don't suggest to them that it was "God's will". That's not what they want to hear right now. For me, it was hard enough to accept that God had allowed my husband's death. I really didn't want to hear that He had willed it. They'll come around in time. --Romeena

March 08, 2005 - Msg 27487: Mornin' Porchsters. Thanks for all your prayers. The family is doing well. What made it so tough is that my wife and her uncle's children are "double" first cousins. Let me try to explain. My wife's father and his brother married sisters. Very tight knit family. It was one of the most emotional funerals I've been to. The son (my wife's cousin) gave a eulogy. And if that wasn't touching enough....the high school where the uncle taught has a gospel choir that he co-sponsored with some other teachers. They asked the family if they could sing at the funeral as a tribute to him. Let me tell you, they brought the house down! Not a dry eye in the place, yours truly included. The entire service was extremely moving. Anyway, thanks again for all your prayers. Talk to you soon.
Rev.Jr.

March 08, 2005 - Msg 27488: Doubles on those prayers mentioned above. A very powerful thing, prayer.

Hazel, you do not drain anything. Just dump it all in as is, that's where the liquid in the soup comes from. Naturally, you can vary the amounts as you like. I added an extra can of tomatoes. I like tomatoes! One can of everything listed and two cans of tomatoes, and I had a biiig pot of soup! Sure is good.

I'm sitting at my big window, looking out at a beautiful green yard, sun shining, and pansies just blooming up a riot of color. So pretty!

Well, I'm clemmed. A 12-hr shift last night, with one particular patient who was terribly needy - and she about wore me out. 90% of the stuff she called me for she could have done herself, but it made her feel better to have someone at her beck and call, so I guess it's okay. Sure kept me busy, though.

Have a great day, everyone. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

March 08, 2005 - Msg 27490: "Flexible people never get bent out of shape"

March 08, 2005 - Msg 27491: MDC- it is, indeed, a public high school choir. I think this group of students started it on their own with the support of some teachers. It's great to see in this politically correct world in which we live. Very talented kids....still get chills thinking about their performance. What's most impressive about them is the fact that they asked to be included. It was definately from the heart. Another thing I thought about was the fact that here they were, a group of African American high school kids, and there he was, a 63 year old white guy, seemingly worlds apart. But yet, it was abundantly evident at the funeral that they had a great respect and love for each other. Nice to see.

March 08, 2005 - Msg 27492: MDC, your mom's roommate sounds like a lot of the elderly folks I used to take care of when I worked the general floors. I never minded making extra steps for them, especially the lonely ones, and there were so many. Unfortunately, the little whip-cracker I'm referring to from last night is 20 years old and perfectly capable of doing for herself. She just had a baby, for cryin' out loud! She's not in ICU! There are some, perhaps those who get pushed around in their "real" life, who seem to take a perverse delight in ordering the nursing staff around. Pick up my pencil, turn off my light, hang up my phone, bring me some coffee, ad nauseum, then they'll get up and walk down to the gift shop with a visitor. Grrrrr. March 08, 2005 - Msg 27497: Thanks, Sterling. I do try to remember that nursing isn't just a job, it should be a calling, and for me it was. I guess I'm just tired. As for God smiling, I wonder if He smiles at some of the tricks nurses use. For example, a patient who needs to get up and move, but refuses to do so - we sometimes place necessary items just a few inches out of their reach, so they at least move and stretch a little. That backfires with some patients, though - they just ring their call bell and ask us to hand them their cell phone or whatever, when it's just inches from their hand. People - we are probably God's strangest creation.

I go visit my mom about 5 days a week (after my 10 hour shift) and ther are like new CNAs there all the time, so I have to re-explain everythting to them regarding her. So many are from the "registry." It is very frustrating. I'll even say to actual new hires - I hope you stay awhile! March 09, 2005 - Msg 27507: Oh, MDC, I do hear what you're saying, and my heart goes to you and your mom. Staffing in long-term care facilities is almost always inadequate. Caring for patients in that setting is difficult, physically taxing, and in many cases, thankless. Families rightfully expect kind personal attention, careful hygiene and frequent checks. Unfortunately, one caregiver may have twelve or fifteen people to see after, and some of those will be combative and uncooperative, turning a ten-minute task into half an hour or more. Most caregivers do the best they can, but eventually get tired of the battle. Some don't care, and just draw their check as long as the facility is willing to let them get away with it. There are a few tell-tale signals to look for when choosing a facility. If you want to know more, let me know and I'll email you.

It's absolutely beautiful here today. I just bought a flat of snapdragons, some pink splash, some gerbera daisies, a little miniature rose and some geraniums. Tomorrow will be a planting day. I have to work tonight.

Not sure if it is from your end or about mine.
I have gone to a few support groups, and it does help some, but the hardest thing is to watch this once vibrant wife and mother who could hit a softball over the centerfield fence (yup, really)
slowly go down. Prayers have helped, no doubt about it. One time a charismatic group came theu the home and prayed over her. (Praying up the walls, I call it :)) She has really kept up pretty good until last year. Now at 86, she is just sort of "giving up". One can see it in her whole demeanor. We've been thru it all together!
I havent really brought it up too much here on the porch, because the porch is my "escape" from it all for a while!
I have seen the power of prayer in her and in me,
and most certainly believe in it! I guess Ro's comments about the ungrateful patient brought the whole situation to the forefront! Sorry !
OK, time for a good Mayberry quotathon!
Or a good dinner from spot!
Thanks and God bless ya, rev,

March 10, 2005 - Msg 27542: Update on My darling person.

All went as well as could be expected with the surgery. No complications.

She went into surgery at 1:50pm and it was over by 6:10pm. A long surgery. They fused the L5-S1...I think I may have said the location wrong in the past.

She didn't get out of the recovery room and into her room until about 8:30pm on Thursday. She's very groggy and they gave her one of those buttons to push that gives you the pain killer every 6 minutes or so depending on when you push it. It won't allow anything to go through less than 6 minutes apart.

She's hurting but the pump fix that pretty well. She was asleep pretty much the entire time I was in the room with her (I left about 11pm). She has to stay flat on the bed with no elevation for her head for 24 hours (timer started at 6:30pm Thursday) then they will get her up and make her walk and move around.

We don't know when she'll be coming home but my guess is late on Saturday or early on Sunday. We'll know more later.

Just keeping you informed. Thank you for the prayers.

March 11, 2005 - Msg 27546: Good Morning Porch!

Floyd, I am so glad your wife came through the surgery okay. My prayers will continue for her, and for you as well!

Thanks for all the prayers for our trip to Tulsa. We made it there safely, even found time to go to the Tall Grass Prairie Preserve about an hours drive north of Tulsa. They released buffalo there a few years back and it is pretty neat to see them in their natural habitat again. We took lots of photos, and I am sure a painting will come of that trip one day soon!

The show went well, we sold three originals, (two of which can be seen on the NatureWorks site still, and we sold some prints as well. We always meet so many nice people at those events also, it makes it all very enjoyable, and again, I really, REALLY appreciate all your prayers!

Spot, good luck on your return to work. I hope the transition goes smoothly for ya!

Well, guess I better get moving, after eating two breakfasts and all! (refering to Spot's 27535 and 27536!)

Have a great Mayberry Day all!

March 11, 2005 - Msg 27548: Welcome back, Mary Wiggins, and I'll be looking forward to seeing a buffalo painting one of these days. Meantime, when you have a chance, if you could email me some digital pictures of what's currently available, I'm really thinking I'm ready for some more of Pat's work.

Floyd, I'm so happy that things went well for Mrs. Floyd. Aren't those PCA (Patient Controlled Analgesia) machines wonderful? At least, they are for those who can tolerate narcotics. I can't, they make me very, very weird, so I have to make do with non-narcotic meds. Fortunately, I have a very high pain tolerance. Anyway, I'm glad she's doing well, and will be home soon.

I'm wearing a 24-hr cardiac event monitor right now, and so far, my heart has done absolutely nothing unusual. It probably won't, either, until about five minutes after I take the monitor off tomorrow.

Well, I'm ready to go buy some more pretties for the yard. This weather just sends me into a gardening frenzy! It's absolutely beautiful today. Have a great weekend, everyone. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Good norming, all! A beautiful day here in Texas, one of those blue and gold days, if you know what I mean. Sunny, blue sky, emerald green grass, flowers blooming, mockingbird singing his little heart out, and it's Sunday. I'm off to preachin', perhaps lunch with friends, then home to work in the yard for a while. I firmly believe that the Lord approves of that, because it's not work for me, it's pure pleasure. Out in His pretty world, listening to the birds sing, digging in the warm earth, planting something that will become beautiful, and having an on-going conversation with Him. What a lovely way to spend a day!
