Ro - thanks for the info, my sister was a nurse for many year, and had capping day in 1960! certainly not a time when jumping up on a bed to do CPR was even a figment of the imagination.
In fact, nurses jobs were much different back then, more like what the aides do today, but still more if you know what i mean.
Were you the one who recently watched Opie's Charity? I watched it last night with some others on that disc. Ronnie Howard was sure a good actor. Loved the whole "poor horatio" vinyette.
How many shows did the "original" floyd? So different from the other floyd. Just not cast well for that part.
You get a line, I'll get a pole, honey,
you get a line, I'll get a pole, babe,
you get a line, i'll get a pole,
we'll go down to the crawdad hole,
honey, baby, mine.
WELCOME back to Ollie, spooky and others.

My living quarters are quite tight and I do get frustrated over CLUTTER quite often too..anyway..I'll get better, I have had the opportunity to vent to a couple of friends about things too..Oh and Pipeman: as far as my inlaws..yes, we all dont think things through well sometimes..but I would like for them to see when they are wrong..even after I have shared my opinion..or at least care about the situation..but they dont. December 09, 2004 - Msg 25651: Romeena, in answer to your question in the archives about how non-Christians celebrate Christmas... most non-Christians I know treat the Christmas season as a special time to get together with family and friends. A time of giving; thinking of others rather than ourselves. Sharing memories with loved ones.

Otis: "I came to fill my vase."

December 10, 2004 - Msg 25652: Yeah Alyce, I can relate to that.:) And to the clutter thing too actually! I hate clutter, and it seems we just buy more and more stuff to clutter things up even more. I'm glad I am like my Mom in that I am not afraid to throw things away or I think I would drown in "stuff".

So, in other words Hazel, most non-Christians celebrate Christmas in a most Christian-like manner. Interesting, don't you think?!

-Sterling Holobyte

December 10, 2004 - Msg 25653: Hey, Hazel. That's been my impression as well. However, in reading back, I see that I didn't really make my question clear. I guess I was referring to those who are so militant about wanting any Christian reference removed from the "holiday" season. If they're so opposed to the "Christ" part that they don't even want it mentioned, then what's the point of the whole thing? I have dear Jewish friends who always wish me a merry Christmas. I realize that the "Christ" part means nothing to them, but they understand that it is important to me, they respect that, and I appreciate it. These same people do exactly what you described at Christmas, and just quietly refer to it as the "holiday season", but they don't insist that I do the same thing. I've always believed that here in the US the Judeo-Christian relationship has mostly been peaceful and mutually respectful. Of course, there are certain individual exceptions, and sometimes there are wicked things done, but there are ignoramuses and bigots in any group, culture or religious system.

I think what's got my dander up is the behavior of the newly-arrived and fast-growing culture, as well as the totally atheistic crowd, all of whom seem to be so highly offended by any Christian reference. I wonder how long it will be before they insist that the sight of my friend's yarmulke is offensive to them. We were placed on red alert on 9/11. I hope we don't forget.

To each of my porch friends, I say "Merry Christmas." I trust that you know me well enough to read into that whatever applies to your personal beliefs. It's my way of saying to you that I wish you well, and wish the blessings of my Lord upon you, whether you believe in Him or not. Sugarplum just says hey! --Romeena

Then when he finds out there's a hook in it, it's too late. Wrong ideas come packaged with so much glitter, it's hard to convince'em that other things might be better in the long run. All a parent can do is say, 'wait, trust me'. And try to keep temptation away."

December 10, 2004 - Msg 25678: Hey, friends. Pipeman, here's how you make a paragraph. You type in (br), only you use < and > where I've used ( and ). If I had used the right symbol, it would just have made a paragraph break and wouldn't have shown up. Anyway, after you type in the command, you hit enter once to make a blank line. Otherwise, the next paragraph will start directly under the last one. Also, when you want to find out how something was done, go to the top of your screen, click on "View", then on "Page Source" and it will take you to a weird looking version of the porch that shows all the command symbols as they're used. Hope this helps.

Rev Jr., that BBQ sauce is some kind of good stuff! I like 'em both, the regular and the hot. They're both a little nippy, but that's okay with me. I eat jalapenos, for goodness' sake! I see what you mean, they're really more of a dippin' sauce, not something you baste the meat with during grilling, though I'm not too sure that wouldn't work pretty well. Anyway, I had some pork roast that I cooked in the crock pot, and I've been jazzing it up with that sauce, and it sure is good!

Gotta run! Sugarplum says ho, ho, ho! --Romeena

Good to see some new & "old" comers to the porch.

Did he ever do any more acting?

Everyone bring a covered dish, pipester, warm up the brown truck, so we can run the old phonograph off the battery, and Ill see if briscoe has any cider.

December 11, 2004 - Msg 25693: Hi, Charlotte! Yes, I watched it and enjoyed it very much - the first time. Now that they've run it absolutely all week, over and over ad infinitum, I'vehadaboutenoughofthe100MostMemorableMomentsInTelevision! I really do wish they wouldn't do that.

Asa, I don't think that's cabbage at the diner. I think Barney's folks' septic tank has backed up again, but it's okay, I heard he was getting them a new one for Christmas. He's a good son.

The Plum is in the doghouse this evening. Well, in her crate, anyway. I bought four beautiful poinsettias and put them in a group out in the sunroom, and they were beautiful. She chose one and decided it was too pretty to live, so she has proceeded to try to destroy it, the little scamp. She breaks a stalk off, then carries the bract (bloom) to the living room and shreds it. The first time, she shredded it on the couch, and got that sticky, milky juice all over the cushion. It came off, thank goodness. The next time she shredded it on the new carpet, and I can't see the juice to clean it up, but I'm sure I will when it starts attracting dirt. The third time, she just made a huge mess on the tile in the sunroom. Yes, I scolded her, but she can be stubborn. The third time, I just swatted her little hiney and tossed her in the clink. She's pouting right now, the
little brat. Yes, I checked the internet to be sure the things aren't poisonous, and they're not. Also spoke with a vet, who said they possess a very low level of toxicity, and since she wasn't eating them, just shredding them, they won't hurt her. Sugar Scissorteeth.

Well, everyone have a lovely Sabbath. I'm looking forward to worship services tomorrow. I always especially enjoy the music at this time of year. Sugarplum would say hey if she wasn't pouting. --Romeena

Now everytime he walks through the livingroom he looks at it, gives a couple of small warning woofs and then makes a wide berth around it. It has him scared. But it's his first Christmas so I reckon he'll get used to it.
I hope Sugarplum gets out soon and is repentant Ro.

December 12, 2004 - Msg 25695: I can just see Ro pacing back and forth in front of the crate, giving her a lecture on The Three Rules. "Now here at the Rock..." How long did she get sent up for, Romeena? Maybe the porch could take a road trip some Sunday and visit her. We could visit the Hubacher boys while we're at it.

December 12, 2004 - Msg 25706: Good evening, everyone. You'll be happy to know that I took pity on poor little Plum and sprung her from the pokey after a couple of hours last night. Also, she had a lovely time this evening. I had a few church friends over, and we ate snack stuff and made root beer floats. Everyone had to give the Plum a carrot when they arrived, so she is full of carrots now. She went from lap to lap and had a fine evening. Her poinsettia juice mustache has about worn off.

My plan is to read the paper and then settle in for a long winter's nap. The house is finally all decorated, looks nice if I do say so myself, and I'm ready to settle in and enjoy the next couple of weeks. Everyone have a lovely week, and Sugarplum, the former inmate, says ho, ho, ho! --Romeena

December 13, 2004 - Msg 25710:
Morning Folks,

Haven't been able to stop by as much as I'd like to. But, here's a quick hey.

It's starting to look a lot like Christmas here on this end of the porch. We got about 7 inches of snow this morning and they say it's gonna stop at about 20 inches or so. It looks great. Our first snow in about a month.

December 13, 2004 - Msg 25711: Dr.Breen,

I know Andy has a lot of fans here in N.Y.
When I was growing up watching TAGS I never thought of them as Southerners. They just seemed like neighbors to me. Still do.

December 13, 2004 - Msg 25712: Mornin' porchsters! Just had time to scan the posts...wow, I missed all the excitement. The Plum gets convicted, sentenced and paroled...all in one weekend! The follow-ups to Ro's post are hilarious. You guys crack me up. Congrats Dixie. That's a great feeling, to be done for the semester. Pipeman- looks like we're in for some of those frigid temps here in the sunny south. Won't have all the snow, but we're supposed to get down in the 20s (that's probably a heat wave to you). You gotta love the weather in SC...short sleeves one day, long johns the next! Y'all have a great day.
Rev.Jr.

December 13, 2004 - Msg 25713: Hey All - thanks pipeman for asking after me. Been busy getting all the Christmas prep done.

We've got about the same kind of weather going on here, Rev Jr. And the statement about short sleeves/long johns is definitely true here as well.

Welcome Dr. Breen and Uncle Ollie. You found that spindle wrench yet, Uncle Ollie?

You all were "singing" the Ballad of Jed Clampett a day or two ago, did you hear that the gentleman who sang it for the show, Jerry Scoggins, passed away Friday. He was 93.

Prayers for all - hope you all have a great week.
AFD!

December 13, 2004 - Msg 25714: auh2o, that's one of the great things about the show. It transcends ages and boundaries. I take it you're still in NY? What part?
Dr. Breen

December 13, 2004 - Msg 25715: Mornin', folks! The Plum thanks you for your well wishes, and for whatever influence you may have had upon me, as her warden. She appreciated the early release, but is now moping about her "record." I'm thinking of giving her a full pardon, so she'll have a clean slate. She's really not a bad sort, and she swears that the poinsettia started it. Made a derogatory remark about her tail, or something like that. We all know how vain the Plum is about her tail plume.

You all are killing me with your tales of snow and such. I had company here last night, and had the a/c on. I had planned on having a fire in the fireplace, but forget that! I have roses blooming, my grass is still green, and the only thing in the yard that has died back is impatiens. We had a light frost one night, and they all just swooned, the sissies. Oh, well, maybe it will get cold sooner or later. Y'all enjoy your snow now, you hear? I'd love to see a white Christmas. Never seen one in my whole life, and that's a long time!

Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Dr Breen, I'm in AZ, just outside Phx.
Good to see AFD coming back from Miss Crump's once in a while! teehee

December 13, 2004 - Msg 25718: MDC- are you auditioning for a DeBeers commercial? Ha Ha. Seriously,Congrats on 30 years! Hope my wife will keep me around that long. By the way, thought about you over the weekend when I saw that tv spot for FeEx. It's the one where the young guy wants to ship something to Pa-Hoe-nix. When they ask him "you mean Fee-nix?" he just starts laughing like they're idiots. Pipester- when I was a kid, my great grandmother had an old outhouse still standing. (yes, she did have indoor plumbing as well) It was the biggest thrill for me and my cousins to use the outhouse. I guess we considered it an adventure restroom. Apparently, it didn't take much to thrill me back then. Ro- I don't think I've ever experienced a white Christmas either. A few years ago it snowed the day after Christmas, but it didn't stick.

But what i did was this: I got ten boxes of graduating sizes and wrapped them all up with the ring in the last tiny box! She kinda sorta thought it might be a ring as she was getting to the smaller boxes, and then the tears began when she got to the last one, and there was my great-grandmother's 1 1/2 caret ring, european cut, from the 1800's that had been passed down to me
many years beforehand! I popped the question and she kinda did a "Laura Petrie" nod, and sob, and finally said YES! Then we went to my folks house for more cryin' and celebrating with the family! And, as they say, the rest is history! I plan to re-do the whole thing this year with a specail little keepsake ring in that final, little box. Sorry guys, this cuz is just a hopeless romantic! But it's worked for all these years!
Rev - I havent seen any of those commercials but the Fee-nix one sounds great!

Hey Gang,

AFD, No I didn't hear that Jerry Scoggins passed, boy that's sad. When my daughters were toddlers I used to sing them the "Hillbillies" theme and the theme to "
Gilligan's Island." My wife had a lot of cute songs to sing to them and they were the only two songs I knew all the way through.

Dr Breen, I still live in NY, the western end near Lake Erie, about 45 minutes from Canada and 25 minutes from Pennsylvania. I almost needed you today Doc. I was up on the roof digging out the satellite dish from the snow and slipped and fell flat on back. I slid about three feet but didn't go over the side. Boy, did I feel fooooooolish. My oldest said I must have looked like Tim Allen in the "Santa Clause."

Considering you didn't get hurt, it'll be a great story from now on. Dixie- I agree with Pipeman, someone is going to be extremely fortunate to catch you. Pipeman- I must be like a snail....slept through 3 years of college. Problem was that 4th year when I finally woke up! Now, MDC- you're killing the rest of the males on this porch. Now I've definately got to keep my wife away from here. You've set the bar way too high. On second thought, maybe I should just take notes from you. Seems you've got this romantic thing down pat. I could learn a thing or two. As far as Christmas stories or traditions...Sterling can relate to this....starting about 4 days from Christmas we have what I call "the parade of meals." It's all my wife's side of the family. Same group of cousins, aunts, etc., get together pretty much every night to eat. Only thing that changes is the location and the meal. We get together with my parents for Christmas eve lunch. If I didn't like my wife's family so much I could see where it would be a major problem.

Glad you came out alright on your roof sliding, auh2o, and that it didn't turn out to be roof flying. Jerry Scoggins daughter said her father sang "The Ballad of Jed Clampett" every day for years. It's probably one of the most recognized tunes in America.
