As for your comments regarding euthanasia, you're right on the money. As I said earlier, there's a big difference in overt action and passive inaction. Euthanasia is an overt action, and I could never favor that. Passive inaction, or the withholding of extreme life-preserving measures, is much different. To resuscitate someone who has no hope of recovery to any quality of life is not saving a life, it's prolonging a death. I've seen it too many times, and it's wretched. It's reasonable to withhold the machines for someone who has been in a vegetative state and then arrests. The arrest can be a blessing. The rub comes when someone who has been reasonably healthy has a sudden event, CPR is done, machines are initiated, and then it becomes evident that grave brain damage has been done and there is no hope for meaningful life. Eventually a decision must be made, and it's very, very difficult. Now it has come down to the very thin line between overt and passive. Overt action could mean the administration of a drug to end life. Passive could be the removal of the life-prolonging machines, but some could see that as overt action. As I said, the wicket becomes very sticky at this point, and there are no clear answers. It becomes a matter between the doctor, the family, and what the family knows in their heart of hearts their loved one would have wanted. I have often advised family members to put away their own feelings, and speak for the patient who cannot speak for themselves - say what they know the patient would say if they could. Any way you approach it, it's very hard.

Enough of that, it's too heavy, and I don't want to go there. I've been there too many times.

I am struggling with those old Halloween issues again!! I need to discuss some issues with my daughters teacher today..I ask for some prayers to handle this in a calm, Christlike way.
They are at school singing songs about witches and reading halloween stories. I am against this. The teacher is also our preschool director at church so this makes it harder. I am pulling my daughter out of school for the month if they continue to sing these songs, etc. This teacher is the type that is very set in her ways, I dont see her changing or taking these songs, stories out for just one child. So that leaves me to pull my daughter out. My thinking now is that I will suggest to the teacher that if she continues with the spooky stuff out my daughter goes for the remainder of October..

As a teacher in the public school system - we have had children who did not participate in the Halloween activities and were given an alternate activity to do with an aide during that time. I don't remember how old your daughter is but I am sure you can come to an understanding in a Christlike manner.

October 13, 2004 - Msg 24156: Homemaker: well the job has been done. I called and discussed the matter with her. She isnt going to change for my child, she clearly stated. I didnt really expect her to, but she needed to know where I stood and that if she continued to sing songs and stories containing those messages, I would pull my child..and I have done so. I talked with my daughter,who is three and a half, and she was fairly ok with it. She is just at an age that she will get confused, cause she is learning one thing at home and something else at school. She only goes two mornings a week, so I am not too concerned with her missing the rest of the month. Although I know she will miss it. I told her we would have school here at home and she was excited.
I have a load off my back, but I feel like the teacher will be grumpy towards me when I see her and that she will talk behind my back..cause i know she does those things..But..oh well..I know that I am honoring God.

Alyce, even though we disagree a little on the Halloween thing, you have every right to suggest that maybe your child can be given an alternate activity that does not conflict with your religious views, I feel. And who knows, maybe other parents who feel the same but are afraid to say anything will follow your example. Good luck!

I don't think I have ever asked for prayers from you guys but I think I have a request for one. Tomorrow my Mom is having a hysterectomy(spelling?), and while it is a rather common and routine operation, my Mom is not a spring chicken anymore and I know she is kind of worried about it(which is natural for any operation I realize, but she really hasn't had to go in for any surgery before) as are we. I know this isn't as serious as some of the other prayer requests I have seen here lately, but if you could include a short one for her in amongst the others, it would be appreciated!

October 13, 2004 - Msg 24159: Sterling: well she says she respects me. I told her that this was mainly a matter of respect anyway. As far as another school, she is on a waiting list for another program at the elementary school. So I am just "waiting".
And I am pretty sure I am the only mother with these beliefs..most of the others celebrate Halloween. There are only 7 kids there.

Prayers for your mom..actually, my daughters teacher just had a hysterectomy and she did very well..was back to teaching in a couple of weeks, really less than that. And she is probably in her 60s.

October 13, 2004 - Msg 24161: Sterling, I feel sure that your mom will do just fine. I had a hysterectomy a couple of years ago, age 63 at the time, and did great. Mine was not an open incision, which of course made it easier, but I went home the next morning and felt wonderful, just a little tired. I could have gone back to work easily in a few days, but my cardiologist insisted I take my full six weeks paid leave. I thought about it for a minute (yeah, right) and decided I'd do what he said.

Alyce, though I don't put quite as fine a point on the Halloween thing as you do, I certainly admire you for having the courage of your convictions, and respect your opinion. You are the molder and shaper of your child at this point, and no teacher has the right to impose his or her will when it comes to moral or religious issues. When my youngest son was in first or second grade, he brought home a book that I was supposed to "help" him read. In the story, two young classmates were always quarreling, and their teacher's solution was to put boxing gloves on them and let them fight it out. In addition, there were a lot of words like "liar" and "stupid" thrown around in the story. I objected, obviously, and personally took the book back to the teacher. I told her I would not be reading the book to my son, and didn't want him involved in any reading or discussion of it in school. God was with me, as the teacher admitted she hadn't even read the book herself, it was just on a list of things sent by the school system. She read through it, agreed with me, and the book was pulled. Never be afraid to stand up for your child and for what you believe.

Well, I'm hungry. I think I'll go over to Bee's and see if she's got some cold chicken. She always seems to have cold chicken on hand. Wonder how she does that? Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

I did more net research on Halloween, and our pastor preached extensively on it last year, it's origins and what it really is today, and it really is and evil day. I know we all respect opinions here so i just wanted to express this and back up Alyce, as well as what Mrs Wiley touched on awhile back.
It is the pagan or druid new year, and witches celebrate it as one of the four sabbats of wicca. The Church tried to counter it centuries ago by declaring November 1 "All Saints Day"
or "All Hallows Day" (in Old English),and so the night before on October 31 became known (in Old English) as "All Hallows Een" which soon became
just "halloween" , just as we change words today.
(Like "I've got to go" has become "I've gotta go.") Believe it or not, it started to counter the pagan day as a night of Christian prayer for all good people, but has reverted back to what we have today.
I admit, that is a real Reader's Digest version of what I have researched, but thought I would try to make more sense of what it was, what was done by the Church to counter it, and what it has again become. Soap box going back under the bed!

Homemaker, I agree, I'd like to see aunt bea and howard or see barney defer to andy, but this is the REAL world! teehee
Ro - Thanks for your thoughts about the whole end of life issue. The Lord set human life, as the word says, "just a little below the angels" and so we must look at our decisions long and hard!

October 13, 2004 - Msg 24166: I see some are still a little divided 'bout this Halloween thing. As a child I did the trick-or- treat thing as most everyone my age did. Now however parents have a more liberal view of things and should stick to their beliefs and they should have an alternative for those who don't want to particiate. We however, at our church found that our youth program could gain a lot of money and knowledge by putting on a "haunted school" and show others the wrath that might befall them if they did'nt walk and do as the Bible says. It was very invigorating and informal, but we scared the dickens out of the believers and the non-believers as well. We made several thousand dollars for our youth and missions we supported.Now the bad side. The fire marshal shut us down 'cause we were usin' fire and other violations without a sprinkler system in the building. Point is as children get older they are goinna' get exposed ta' lots of stuff that without our guidance they may stray from the path...let they stray all the while keeping a watchful eye for wood be atackers, watch how fast they run back under the dress tail from whence they came......P.S. Me and my wife uere the youth directors at our church for many years and still have young adults we taught tell us what a wonderful time of their life that was for them...BIG TOM

If kids in public schools can't be exposed to the religious side of Christmas and Easter, why are they allowed to be exposed to all the witchcraft (a tax-exempt religion, by the way) that is part of this day? It is a definite double standard, that is for sure. Why isn't the ACLU filing lawsuits against these districts, like Alyce's, that allow it?
That would be an interesting thing to do, call them and see what they have to say!

October 13, 2004 - Msg 24170: MDC: actually I learned today that in our county the schools are not to have the spooky parts of Halloween included. My thing is..dont have anything at all..dont use the term..if you want to celebrate..celebrate the fall season..Her preschool is not involved with any school system, so the teacher does what she wants. My sister in law is on my side and her daughter is in the elementary school here in the county..she flat out told them that if they can take the Jesus out of Christmas at school then they can take the spook out of Halloween..fall...whatever. She told them that if they are going to read stories about witches, etc, then she was going to come in December and read to them about Jesus and the Christmas story. Shes a bold one and I love her for it!

Big Tom: yep they are going to be exposed to this crap in this world, but for now, at my daughters age, I prefer to keep her safe from it now as much as I can. I dont want to shelter her forever, but at almost 4 years old, its a confusing issue to deal with for her.

Lunch today, fried baloney sandwiches, grilled cheese, fresh milk, chips and brownies for dessert. Goin' off the health foods for one day! teehee.
It was total gridlock on our roads here last night! Post-debate rallies for both candidates
were well attended but also brought traffic to a standstill. All back to normal now!
I have been to many plays and concerts in that beautiful auditorium designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Acustics are so good that a whisper on stage can be heard in the balcony!

October 14, 2004 - Msg 24173: Hey MDC and Rev.Jr, my Mom used to make us bologna "hats", have you ever heard of those? She would take slices of bologna and fry them until the middle puffed up, and we loved them! Never tried them on a sandwich though, I don't know why.

Speaking of my Mom, she is doing fine after her operation, just a little tired. Thank you all for your prayers and concern, I know they helped!
I will most likely go and see her tomorrow. She is at a hospital about an hour away and I couldn't go today because Kai had school, and I went along with her because they had a field-trip today and I said I would drive. We had fun. We went on a hayride and Kai fed some cows and picked out a pumpkin in the pumpkin patch. It was kind of cold but all the kids had fun.
Then later on we get to go to the Doctor so Kai can get her flu shot. I'm sure she will be thrilled about that!;) No, she's usually pretty good now about getting shots.

Slap some mustard on both pieces (regular loaf white bread), throw the fried bologna in the middle and have at it! Wash it down with an RC cola or a Red Rock and you're in business!

Alyce, I am thinking that you should start praying because your daughter's teacher's first reaction may have been defensive but once she has an opportunity to really think about it she might change her mind if she realizes your daughter will be the one to suffer over her decision. So what is the big deal if a few children celebrate fall instead of Halloween? That would be far better than one of her students missing out on the whole month. It seems to me that if she really cared about the little ones, the decision would be easy, and if she doesn't care, your daughter is better off not being there. By the way, have you ever considered home schooling and getting involved with a home school support group or co-op? You would have the benefit of having control of what she was exposed to and also alot of activities with other children. I'll bet your daughter would love it.

By the way, I personally DON'T think you are over-reacting. I wouldn't like it, either. You know, we are at a time that we all need to be bold about our religious freedoms and rights, whatever they are.

I had better go get ready to go back to Mom's. Oh, I almost forgot to tell Asa that we had a real cool front come through this morning and it has been a beautiful, cool day today. Hoorah!

Sterling: my daughters had their second part of the flu shot today. The baby does fine..My oldes, who is 3.5, I had to hold down, the first time, she snatched the needle out of her leg.

Pipeman: Actually..I talked with her teacher on the phone about the entire issue, and we basically talked about respect for one anothers opinions and I told her I hoped there were no hard feelings and she said the same. We will just see how it goes..I also see her every sunday at church.

Boo: Thanks for the support. She only goes to preschool on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9-12, so I am not that upset over her missing. She only goes for the social benefits and the structure. I teach her all that she does there at home. I think they should be a little more ahead actually, I mean they are doing colors..and my child knew hers when she was a year and a half years old. Anyway..like i had said earlier, she is on a waiting list for another program. And to be honest, she doesnt need the preschool for social reasons anymore..She is a social butterfly!
Actually, my daughter and I prayed for the teacher tonight, so funny you have suggested that. I prayed that the Lord would change her heart..if its His will at this time of course though. Anyway..I am sure everyone here is sick of me complaining about the situation,so I wont mention it again..

October 14, 2004 - Msg 24185: If you ever get throwed in jail in Tennessee ya' eat a lotta fried bologna. Mine you I aint ever been throwed in jail, but I spent a lotta time there talkin' to them that had the miss fortune oe being apperhended of a crime that they did'nt commit. That was a real eye opener for my youth group. I took 'em all to jail one night and put 'em in the slammer. To my knowledge none have ever been back. Fried bolonga is a staple of life in jail, but it sure is tasty.

October 15, 2004 - Msg 24191: Mornin' porch. I usually post in the mornings when I get to work. I've really got to start checking in on the porch at night, seems like I'm missing out on some good conversations. Alyce, I mentioned (during the onslaught of hurricanes a while back) that my aunt lives in Pensacola.......Now, with all this talk about fried bologna sandwiches, I'm heading to the grocery store today! The wife and kids may be eating steak tonight but there's only one thing on the menu for me.

October 15, 2004 - Msg 24192: This may sound gross but I like fried bologna sandwiches with baked beans and cottage cheese - sometimes all piled on each other - that's my gross-osity for the day. Sure do love fried bologna! I haven't really fixed it for my kids - the bologna doesn't stay around long enough.

We should be having baby goats again soon - we have several does to have kids at the end of the month and the beginning of the next.

October 15, 2004 - Msg 24193: homemaker, is there any way to post or email pictures of those baby goats when they come? My youngest daughter is a huge animal lover. I'd love to be able to show her pictures of "real" baby goats, not just pics out of a magazine. Speaking of piling food up....here's another southern staple. Butter beans or field peas mixed in with your rice. Douse it with pepper vinegar or, better yet, cut up some hot peppers and mix 'em in good. I don't know about the rest of the south, but in my part of SC that's a fixture in the country buffett restaurants. Seems like ALL I talk about with y'all is food! Ha! I promise I don't eat like that everyday.

October 15, 2004 - Msg 24198: Good morning, everyone! No, Sterling, I'm not having car trouble. Just had a misty moment, reading all the loving and friendly comments folks were making to each other. Nope, car trouble never troubles me. I buy certified pre-owned cars from Sewell Village Cadillac in Dallas, and a new car warranty comes with them - bumper to bumper warranty. They even replaced a dead battery in one car, at 62,000 miles, and didn't charge me a dime. I don't put a lot of miles on a car, so I only trade about every three or four years. My present car is a '99 and only had 16k miles on it when I bought it a week after 9/11. It now has 34k miles on it. I paid $20k for a $44k car, and got a new car warranty. Not a bad deal. I'll drive this one until May, then will trade it just before the warranty runs out. Thus - no car repair bills for me!

October 15, 2004 - Msg 24206: Buyin' it lock stock & barrel Rev.Jr.! Better excuse than mine anyway. I'm a temp assisting 5 people at the same time and today's my last day at this assignment. I've been in this department for a month. Before that, I was in another department for a day, and another for a week before that. Next week I move to yet ANOTHER department. This has actually been the most reliable temping job I've ever had. All posts within the same company and never more than one day without an assignment (it's a very big company). It has been starting to get me down this last week and I think that's why I've started goofing off a bit. I miss working for my step-dad's business out in the country. I'm stuck in the middle of down-town DC right now and I miss fresh air!

But it's like I said, I miss living in the country where you have to wave at every passing car in case you happen to be related to the driver and the neighbors get suspicious if you grow corn in the front field because then they can't see what you're up to at your house in back.

Its good to meet Tally. He (or she?) sounds perfectly charming....I loved the talk of DC.

Things are calming down some here but we had a problem with my mom's dog. Now when I tell you this, its ok to laugh because I did....ya'll know that my mom had a stroke 5 years ago that left her almost a total invalid and my dad recently had a small stroke that he is recovering well from. Well, here's the part that seems funny in some sick way...I have been taking care of my parents for over a week while my sister is out of town (she usually helps me) and have been really overwhelmed with everything. This morning my mom's dog was acting sick. She would just stand out in the yard and stare at the ground. She wouldn't eat for a couple of days, too. I thought the poor thing might be dying and I felt terrible for my parents. I took the dog to the vet and it turns out the DOG had a stroke...and why not, she is part of the family! Rather than cry, I opted to laugh. The dog seems to be recovering and finally ate something tonight. She certainly seems to have a strange 'far away' look in her eyes, though (heehee). Now, to top it off, while I was at my parent's, MY dog climbed the fence after pulling out of her collar and ran away. This is day two and no sign of her. We made phone calls and put up signs today...we'll see.

I happened to mention this evening to my hubby that I wanted some Oreo cookies and he went to the store. Much to my surprise, he just came in here and handed me a package of Oreos and a glass of milk. As he left the room I heard him say, "Ain't love grand?". I must say I have to agree!

I don't remember you Tally, and you probably don't remember me, but you are welcome here just like everyone else, I'm sure!

Well, my Mom might be coming home today(thanks for asking Possum). Kai and I went up to see her yesterday and she looked Great! I was half-expecting to see her lying in her bed all disheveled with tubes coming out of every part of her body(I thought that because she told me before she went to the hospital that she probably wouldn't want any visitors the first day because she was thinking she might look horrible), but when we went in to see her she was sitting up on the side of her bed, and except for the unattached IV "hookups" on her arms, she looked how she always looks... disheveled. No, just kidding! She looked great. Wasn't pale or anything like she thought she would look. She even walked out to get us when we had to go and wait in the waiting room for the nurse to finish a test or something.
I think the hardest part for her will be not doing anything for six weeks while she heals, as she is pretty active. Hopefully she will just learn to enjoy her "vacation".

Boo, sounds like you've really got your hands full. I'm glad your folks' dog is getting better, that would have been about all they needed, especially if they're really fond of the dog. I hope your own dog comes home! That's awful! I don't know what I'd do if my little Plum disappeared. There would be APBs out all over the country for her. I just can't imagine such an awful thing.

Sterling, I just knew your mom would do well. She's probably going to feel better than she has in a long time. She'll be tired for a couple of weeks, but then she'll be fine. Possum, it's so good to hear happy news about little Laci. That baby belongs to this whole porch, you know.

Pipeman, your reference to the racing trucks and a newcomer getting the packages reminds me of something I observed many years ago. I heard a terrible commotion out in my front yard and looked out to see a pack of assorted male dogs all bristled up and talking a lot of trash to each other over a lone female, probably a bird dog mix, who was evidently in a very attractive mode. Well, while all the arguing was going on, along came a tiny terrier-type fellow, about ten inches tall, who just walked up to the female, whispered some sweet nothings to her, and the two went trotting off down the street together, while the other dogs were still arguing and fighting. Finally one of them noticed that the female was gone, and they all gradually just hushed, looked at each other very sheepishly, and drifted away, one by one. I laughed for hours over that.

Oh, about the rain, didn't Opie's scout campout get rained out?

Nevertheless, I know that only good folk hang out on the porch! If there are any Dan Fogelberg fans out there, and if you didn't already know, he's been diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer that has apparently spread to his bones. He's always been one of my favorites in the music world, like TAGS is in the TV world. Pray for an old friend, will y'all?

October 16, 2004 - Msg 24235: Of course, prayers for Dan. May the Lord bring healing and comfort to him and his family.

Funny story about the dogs, Ro! I am happy to say that we found our dog, Belle, much to the relief of my son. She is, however in the local pound and we can't bail her out until Monday--can't wait to find out what it will cost us. My husband has been working all day putting up a 5 foot hurricane fence in the backyard. Hope it contains her! My parent's dog drank some water today and wagged her tail to greet me so that is a little improvement but I don't feel very good about the prospects of recovery, poor thing. It's very sad, really, because my parents are very attached to her. They lost a little dog 11 years ago and it almost killed both of them. I'll never forget it. It was the first time I ever saw my dad cry. I was confused because I never saw him cry at his mother's funeral or his brother but he cried and almost fell apart when the dog died. Later he explained to me that in the past he had pushed all his grief down inside him somewhere and never dealt with it but for some reason when the dog died, it all came out; every bit of it and it nearly killed him. At least he dealt with it at that time so maybe he won't grieve so badly when this dog dies (I can hope). Boy, nobody ever told me how hard this was going to be when my parents got older. I am trying to find the blessing in it and am happy to be able to help and support them.

Well, I can honestly say I have not watched TAGS in months...no time to. One of these days things will slow down a bit. I hope you all have a wonderful Sunday!
