Pumpkin Patch Song

Tune: Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star

On this frosty October day,

Singing, skipping on our way.

To the pumpkin patch we run,

Looking for that special one.

Pumpkin, pumpkin,

Orange and round,

Waiting for me upon the ground.

Well, I'm BACK!! The trip to Glacier was really wonderful. I would highly recommend that trip to anyone who likes the great outdoors. Some of you know that my husband is an artist, and he is certain he has many wonderful paintings that will be birthed from that trip. We saw many animals, more than I ever expected to see, including a wolverine!

Here's a funny story from the trip...We took along our six year old son. He has never flown in a plane, never seen mountains, so this was all a big adventure to him. One day we decided to go to Waterton International Peace Park, which is in Canada, right across the border from Glacier. We forgot to bring the proper i.d. but we figured we would try it anyway, maybe the border guards would show a little mercy. When we arrived at the border, the guards there informed us that we were going to have to go inside and talk to one of their specialists. We were told that when estranged parents kidnap children, one of the most common places they go is across the border, (I never knew that). They wanted to be sure our little boy was really ours and that we weren't kidnapping him. They asked him who we were, and he very sheepishly answered, "Uh, my mom and dad?" Not too convincing! But we had our driver's licenses and I had my son's health care card. The guards did some sort of check and must have deemed us okay because they let us through. After driving about a couple miles, my little boy asked from the back seat of the car, "Are you guys really my parents?"

Romeena, I have absolutely loved your journals and number 20 made me cry so hard. You have such a gift, not only of writing, but loving and serving others. Thanks for being a part of "The Porch"!

Asa- where ya been.

CT - why do they have to stay for the other game?
What's with that?
Here's a question for you folks with the pre-teens etc, do they still play "yard games" that I used to do as a youngster, like Red Light Green Light, Starlite, Moonlite, Capture the Flag, Red Rover, Mother May I, etc or did they all go out when video games came in? All I know is that they sure kept us in shape, and with childhood obesity problems now, I just wonder if that is part of it along with all the soda etc in schools
today.
Well, anyway, have a great day.

However, I have noticed that when they end up outside with the other neighborhood kids they seem to make up their own games. It's usually some variation of hide 'n go seek. Anyway, once they get caught up in the game (and forget about playing on the computer) they laugh harder and have more fun than they've had all week. I find the challenge is to just get them out the door. Pipeman, count me in on the big halloween party. It'll be my first, can't wait.

September 29, 2004 - Msg 23863: Sorry Spot...we must have posted at the same time, didn't see yours. Yeah, that ride along thing was great. It did get a little hairy there on the straight aways. The driver got about a foot from the wall. I asked him later how fast we were going. Told me we were up to about 140. Even though I was just a passenger, it really gave me a new found respect for what those guys do. I have several friends who have actually done the Richard Petty Driving Experience thing. They loved it. You know, when I was a kid, Darlington Raceway used to open up the track (a couple of days after a race) to the public to take a couple of laps behind the pace car. I remember riding around the track with my dad in our Corvair (Ralph Nader's favorite car), it would barely go fast enough to keep from sliding down the banked turns! Finally, a couple of "racer-wannabes" ruined it for everybody one year. They got at the back of the pack and waited for the pace car to take off. They didn't move until the rest of the pack was about 3/4 of the way around. Then they took off racing. They both ended up wrecking (nobody was hurt). So that ended that!

Alyce, we are making plans to build on 5 acres of very raw land in a fairly small town near us. Our property is covered with oak trees but most of them are fairly small. The foliage is so dense that we have not been able to walk all over it yet. Anyway, it has to be cleared and a well dug, etc...lots to do just to get it ready to build. As far as the house plans go we have looked at tons of them but not found exactly what we want so we are going to have to go to an architect. We will be moving in with my parents within the next couple of months and selling our current home. My parents need alot of help so it will be a good thing to do right now. As far as the house goes. We are looking for 2 stories, around 3000 sf and southern or farmhouse style.

MDC, my kids are both thin and active and I think with my son it is because he isn't in a classroom for so many hours every day. Because he's homeschooled, his lessons take less time to finish and he spends alot of time ourdoors riding bikes, scooters and plain 'ol climbing trees. He is much too busy to play on the computer or video games. Also, I think that when you have them at home you can better control what they are eating. I don't buy sodas and limit there sweets. Every now and then I encourage the kids in the neighborhood to play games like Mother May I or Swing The Statue and they love it but they don't seem to take the initiative themselves. I agree with you, I think the junk food and the lack of activity is a real health problem for kids today and I feel so sorry for the kids who end up with type 2 diabetes in grade school. I wonder what there lives will be like later on.

Better go, my sister is here for a visit. Have a good evening!

September 30, 2004 - Msg 23897: Afternoon porchsters, MDC...I Was reared (my momma always called it reared 'cause she said ya' raised hogs and reared children, must be a southern thing) in north east Tennessee between Johnson City and Kingsport on a farm. Who woulda guessed that. Anyway we went ta' the races every Friday and Saturday night. We would go anywhere that the action was hot. Now we go dirt trackin' watchin' em pitch 'em sideways. Scott Bloomquist lives a few miles down ta' road and we enjoy his racin' style. We loved the World of Outlaws when they came to Brisrol. We live about 20 min. from Bristol so we see that action 'bout every year. House buildin' is a blast. I'de build one every year or two if the madam would let me. I reckon that this 'ill be my last one. we built it bout ten years ago, and still love it. We gotta pool and hot tub outside and its our little tropical oasis in ta' hills with all the tropical plants and fountians and outdoor gas fireplace. I made it 'bout two years ago, and have made several sence for my buddies. I also do ornamental iron work on the side. Gotta go smell a little diesel fuel, my yard needs mowin'...Big Tom

September 30, 2004 - Msg 23898: Big Tom: come on to VA and use some of that handi work in my new house!
I do have to clarify, that we are doing some of the work on our house..like the painting..the deck..probably will help with the porch, my hubby is going to do the fireplace and we have to do some "finishing" upstairs..putting up a wall here and there to make another bedroom.
Oh Big Tom: its called rearing cause we got those "rear" ends torn up when we were disobedient!
Well its Chicken and dumplings, black eyed peas, and corn tonight. We need some cornmeal muffins though!
I need a good remedy for my dry hands..the skin is just peeling away..I worked yesterday (cleaning a house) and had my hands in pine sol all day. The Bag Balm is not working well today..Any suggestions??

September 30, 2004 - Msg 23901: Alyce and Boo - we are in the midst of looking at homes to build as well. We currently live in a log cabin (which I like) but it has become too small - with all the "kids" we have, just not enough room. We own 23 wooded acres and we have decided to be a little different with our new home - we are building a pole barn and doing the inside with drywall, insulation, the whole bit (and maybe a little straw for the "kids") - we saw a couple who had one on our Texas trip and we fell in love with it. So, hopefully, next year - we will be building too! I always wanted a Waltons style house if I could buy it already built and located on a farm. None in this area for sale. You can bet my kitchen will be a 50's kitchen with red enamalware and tablecloths - already have a good collection of the red topped accessories! and the aprons to go with it!

Take care everyone and thanks again!!

Smooth sliding drawers on slides with stops, so no more falling drawers! The set is 2 nightstands, 6 drawer bureau with mirror and 5 drawer high chest. October 01, 2004 - Msg 23929: Howdy, everyone! Alyce, it sounds like you've been an unwilling partner in a practice called "email spoofing." A note coming back to you that you never sent in the first place is the first clue. Spoofing is done by means of one of the infamous "worms". Your computer doesn't have the worm, but it gets roped in by the computer that does. It has happened to me. I found it when one of the emails the spoofer sent out was returned by the mailer demon. I knew I hadn't sent it, and contacted my computer guru in Florida. Here is his explanation:

"Email Spoofing

W32.Sobig.F@mm, for example, uses a technique known as "spoofing." The worm randomly selects an address it finds on an infected computer. Sobig then uses this address as the "From" address when it performs its mass-mailing routine. Many cases have been reported in which users of uninfected computers received complaints that they sent an infected message to another individual."

It appears that this is what has happened to you. Since your address was undoubtedly on her mailing list along with everyone else in her office, you got selected as the "From" address, and the worm's mailings went out to all of them with your address showing up as the source. Your computer never did anything, doesn't have the worm, and you knew nothing about it. You're just the victim. What kind of mentality dreams these things up, and what kind of pitiful, lazy good-for-nothing puts them into action? Don't they have a life? It obviously takes intelligence to do these things, but it sure doesn't show much smart, or much self-esteem. Can't you just imagine one of these troglodytes saying, "Hey, Mom! Guess how many email worms I spoofed out today!" Mom must be so proud!

Mary Wiggins, as soon as Pat gets some paintings done from your trip to Glacier, I really want to see them. If you don't get a brochure made up, just a good digital picture will do. I know his work, and could select from clear pictures, I think. I know if it looks good in the picture, the painting is going to be great.

Homemaker, I'm glad things are improving for you. Hang in there, dear.

Well, nite-nite, everyone. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

October 03, 2004 - Msg 23942: Good Sabboth to all.
WooHoo, Ariz. State won again,..now 5-0!
Pipeman- I liked halloween as a youngster cuz it was simple and not 2 months worth of hype and vilence like today. So many of these "scarehouses" are totally grotesque now etc.
We usually have an alternative party at the church where the kids dress up like biblical characters etc and play games. All are happy cuz the kids just like "dressing up".
Just like the cremshaw ep, scary but not gross out type stuff!
But to my youth, good story happened when i was about 10. I dressed as a "hobo" with patches etc and my dad burned a cork and then dabbed the burnt part on my face for "whiskers." All our costumes were homemade. Anyway, my brother, 12,
put on a barrel with two straps and had nothing else on! My mom caught him just before we left the house and had him put on shorts! (In AZ it's usually still pretty warm out), but when she asked him what the deal was, he just innocently said he thought it would be more "authentic!!"
haha, we never laughed so much.! Thjose were some fun days, popcorn balls, homemade candies etc and no one had to worrry about any of it.
So what time do we meet at cremshaw's and who's gonna get the baseball out?? teehee
Alyce, you may also want to try todo a defrag on your hard drive.
How's the race coming along?
Have a good afternoon. Steaks on the grill tonight!
MDC

October 03, 2004 - Msg 23943: Hey, everyone! Alyce, the Brady Reunion has been on, and on, and on, and on, ad nauseum. I think it will be on again tonight at 11pm, Eastern time. Check your listings.

I, too, remember when Halloween was a time for the little kids to dress up and go "scare" people, and collect some treats in the bargain. It was a lot of fun. I have great memories of my small children in their little costumes, sometimes store-bought, often home-made. I don't know how it is in small towns, but things have changed in the cities. I no longer buy candy, or even turn on my porch light. When the majority of the trick-or-treaters are six feet tall, have hairy legs, deep voices, and don't need burnt cork to make their whiskers, it's time to shut it down. Our church does the "fall festival" thing as well, and the kids get to win candy and other treats at the many game booths that are set up in the gym. As you might imagine, nobody is allowed to lose, everyone wins. Biblical or animal costumes are encouraged, witches and other scary stuff are discouraged. It's a fun alternative to the occult connotations of Halloween. Nobody makes a big deal out of that part, but we do offer an alternative.

Hmmm. It's sprinkling rain. Mr. Weaver is scheduled to come tomorrow and scalp my lawn and overseed it with fescue so I'll have green grass all winter, but if it's wet, we may have to reschedule. Drat, that means I'd have to spend a quiet, rainy afternoon sitting here at this window, watching the rain. I think I can just about manage that.

Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena
