Charlotte: good to see you...we moms stay busy year round! Grandma is doing well so she says..not really complaining. Tonight my mama came over and we had a chance to actually talk since what happened. I hope she feels better since talking about it to me..I dont know that I was any help, but I thought I would try. She says that every time she closes her eyes she sees what happened and that she really thought she was gone. Not positive talk here, but that is what she thought, so I can understand why its been so difficult for her. I told her to just be so thankful that it wasnt as bad as it could have been..anyway..I totally can understand, cause I had an awful accident where I flipped my van with my 2 year old and my 3 week old..I thought the baby was gone..but she never woke up, she slept through it all...that was all I could see for a long time afterwards too..

September 10, 2004 - Msg 23514: Pipeman, Co-Q-10 is indeed available over the counter. You can get it in any drug store or even a grocery store if they have a vitamin and supplement section, which most do. It's a bit pricey, about $30 for a month's supply of 100mg capsules. It's much cheaper through Puritan's Pride. My doctor has told me to take at least 100mg daily. However, as a conscientious nurse, I can't make myself tell you to take it if your doctor told you not to. I would, however, ask for a specific explanation of why he doesn't want you to take it. Just the fact that you already take a lot of medication isn't enouogh. What's one more pill, when you're taking that many? If he sees a cross-reaction or something, that's different, but just the number of pills isn't a good enough reason.

Poor Florida! Now it looks like Ivan is going to hammer them for a while, too. My kids have just left their house boarded up. I don't blame them. They leave for Ireland a week from today, and they don't want any surprises when they get home.

Well the AZ Diamondbacks season is mercifully coming to a close soon. I can't believe they dismantled the whole team in just two years.
Very poor year with only about 40 wins so far.
Maybe our football Cardinals will do better. They only won three games last year.

Ro, dont know how you keep doing those night shifts. They can be brutal. Is all the water staying IN the pipes now? Hope THE MAN didnt charge you too much.
Prez race is sure getting mean. They now say that CBS or someone doctored the Bush service documents shown on TV the other night.

Just FYI, I received a catalog from Puritan's Pride yesterday, and they're having their annual 3-for-1 sale. You buy one of anything, and get two more free. For any of you who are interested in Co-Q-10, or anything else for that matter, this is a great way to get it at a very reasonable price. Their website is www.puritan.com. I'll be sending in an order, for sure.

My poor roses. I got all the weeds out, and pruned them back, but they're still looking awful. They suffered a big attack of black spot while I was gone, and many of them are just stripped of leaves. All of them look skinny and weak, a far cry from the robust, healthy bushes they were back in the spring. Anybody have any suggestions? I'm a clueless newbie when it comes to roses.

Also, I've had a problem with the miserable little ants getting into my hummingbird feeders. They travel down the chains that the feeders hang from, and get into the sugar water, making a terrible mess. I cleaned them all out earlier this week, and put vaseline on the chains. So far, no ants. I wanted to use Vicks, but was afraid the odor would keep the hummers away. If I was a hummingbird, I wouldn't want to drink from anything that smelled like that! The vaseline doesn't seem to bother them, though, they've been coming in as usual.

I loved last night's show, where Gomer thinks Andy saved his life. Don't you know Andy just wanted to smack him every time he called him "Mr. Life Saver Man?" So funny!

What a beautiful Sabbath day! The sun is shining, my yard is dappled with shade, but enough sun to make the flowers happy, the fountain is flowing and some birds are taking a shower in it, one of my little squirrel friends is nosing around looking for leftover seed, and a pigeon is trying to convince his ladyfriend that he's her best choice. I love it!

Here in my town yesterday, we voters defeated a bill that would have allowed open liquor sales in grocery stores and convenience stores, and would have allowed liquor stores and beer barns to open here. We beat it by a 2 to 1 margin, so I hope that will keep it quiet for a few more years. We don't presume to try to tell people whether they can drink or not, that's their business. However, we sure don't need it flowing in the streets around here. The big thing was tax revenue. The proponents figured that we're losing 1.1 million dollars annually, as people buy their liquor elsewhere. At one penny on the dollar, can you imagine how much liquor would have to be sold in this little town to bring in 1.1 million dollars? If I'm figuring right, that's $110 million. That works out to just over $550 spent on liquor by every man, woman and child in this town of less than 200,000. It's just not worth it, and I'm glad we beat it. Sorry about the soapbox, friends, but it was good news in my opinion, and I wanted to share it.

September 13, 2004 - Msg 23537: Romeena - I know when my roses look pitiful, and this sounds silly, I douse the whole rose bush in soapy dishwater. It's kinda like giving them a bath. I don't rinse them either - just leave the soapy water on them.

Been busy putting up fence this weekend. Next week it is the little town's fall festival (a pig roast on Saturday and a fish fry on Sunday with Gospel Singing). Looks like we might even be in the parade with our goats! Talk about hometown proud!

It was good to see Joe Gibbs win his first game back Alyce. I really like him as a person and a coach. Romeena, I agree with your thinking on the booze sales. Our entire state is controled pretty hard on the sale of spirits. I guess if drunks could all be like Otis, easy going and lovable it wouldn't be so bad, but most drunks I ever met become loud and very obnoxouis. And just wanna fight! It gets old fast. I said it and I ain't taking it back either!:) Not to knock anyone who drinks, just those who drink to excess and become a problem for all.

September 13, 2004 - Msg 23543: Afternoon porch, made it home from Pigeon Forge yesterday afternoon. Beautiful weather,warm days and cool nights. Car shows are a lotta darn work. We saw a lotta old friends and met a few new ones.The crowd seemed off a little this year, there were only 2 or 3 thousand cars at the show, with another 6 to 8 thousand in town.If you've never been thats way off the norm. Got ta' Grand Rod Run in Pigeon Forge this weekend, don't know if I'm goin or not yet. Charlotte swap meet and car show is also this weekend so I think I'm Goina hitch a ride over there. Later...BIG TOM... oh, how was the rodeo? Dixie 'ol gal,you better board up and head fer the hills. And don't quit 'till your in Chattanooga...I mean it. Put ya' a mountian 'tween you and that storm. Slows 'em down a might.

I believe the Lord is helping me out...I stay on the computer too much..Been cleaning today..and just when I got the kitchen all cleaned, floor scrubbed..I decided to make some apple pies! But its going to be worth it..It looks and smells so good. My husband's been on me for a while to bake him a pie...my pie..homemade crust and all. He's going to the grocery store to get Ice cream, hehe..I had apples that had to be used too. So he gets one and my daddy gets one..part of his Grandparents Day gift! Plus I have been working on supper..pork chops in the crock pot with chicken broth, mushroom soup, onion soup mix..butter beans..rice..and left over herb roasted potatoes as well as corn. Mary Wiggins, we haven't had any cool nights yet here in South Texas. Its supposed to be in the 90's all week with high humidity! We have to wait longer for cool nights but we sure do appreciate them when they get here. Right now the nights are warm, and humid with plenty of mosquitos.

That apple pie sounds real good, Alyce. I haven't made one since last winter. I don't do my own crust, though, I buy that kind you fold out and put in the pie plate (so easy!). I am the pie person at all the family holidays and nobody even knows that I don't make the pie crust from scratch. I make the best chocolate pie around, even won first place at the church pie contest last year at Thanksgiving with it....don't like to brag, but.....it really is good!

Speaking of Thanksgiving, it will be upon us soon and then Christmas. I love to start planning for the holidays way in advance...kind of adds to the excitement. Alyce, are you familiar with Susan Branch and her books? She has a new one out called Autumn From The Heart Of The Home. It looks really good. I'm going to get it this week I think. I have Christmas From The Heart Of The Home and I love it. The artwork is precious. She has a website if you want to check her out. It's www.susanbranch.com

September 14, 2004 - Msg 23569: Leftover rice recipie (Fried Rice):

1 cup (or more) of cold leftover rice
1/2 grated carrot
a few frozen peas
Morton's Season Salt
butter
soy sauce
any leftover meat/fish

In a frying pan, melt a chunk of butter. Add cold rice, mix well. Sprinkle with Morton's Season Salt and a bit of soy sauce. Stir well. Add carrot, peas, meats. Sprinkle with more soy sauce and Season Salt to taste. Stir well again. Let mixture fry until steam flows through the mixture freely. Serve hot and enjoy!

I lived on this as a teen - never quite made it home for supper, so Mom would always make me some extra rice.

September 14, 2004 - Msg 23571: Alyce, Susan Branch is an artist who is kind of like Martha Stewart and writes and illustrates her own books on cooking, entertaining and home, etc. She does do scrap booking stuff and that might be what you are thinking about. Hmmmmm, you might be related. She lives in Martha's Vineyard. Got any relatives there?

When I was a kid my mom would take leftover rice and heat it with milk (whole, of course), butter and lots of sugar and eat it for a nighttime snack while watching TV. I prefer real rice pudding, though.

The baby got a flu shot today and Cam gets hers tomorrow..hope they will stay healthy this fall/winter season. Got to pick up pictures tomorrow, church in the pm. Thursday I have to work and Friday its back to the Dr's office..I am going to be sick of that place...3 times this week! Plus once last week..uggg!

September 15, 2004 - Msg 23576: Just droppin' by the porch to say hey. My computer crashed last week, lost everything (for now). You know how they (who are "they" anyway?) say things happen in 3s? Well, I think my 3 happened all in a 2 day period last week. 1) cell phone died 2) computer crashed and 3) bottler for my BBQ sauce went bankrupt. But, all is well. Got a new cell phone, getting a new computer, got a new bottler, so I've got nothing to complain about. Was putting the baby in the van while at my moms, then one of their dogs (eskimo spitz..so long white hair) jumped in my van..she was scared of the storm. It was crazy..I was at one door and mama was at another, trying to get her out..I got drenched! So glad to be home and dry now..for now at least..have to go back out in a while to pick the oldest up from school then off to the Dr's and the mall. I am tired just reading what I have to do today!

Well, lots to do today and don't want to do any of it. I had one of those sleepless nights again. I couldn't fall asleep and then once I did, baby girl woke me up screaming and crying at 4:30am after wetting the bed. Then my 9 year old woke up and couldn't go back to sleep. I put my 3 yr old in bed with my husband and tried to sleep on the couch but our Lab got out of the fence again and was scratching n the front door early this morning (it never ends!). I'm draggin' my wagon this morning. Anyway, I am afraid that my puppy is going to get hit by a car but we just cannot keep her from climbing the fence. I took her to my dad's house because he has a big yard and a tall hurricane fence. Well, it only took her a minute to climb it and get out. My husband went to the pet store and bought a shock collar. It sounds cruel but it might save her life. I sure hope it works. He paid 135.00 for the thing and said he would get his money's worth by using it on our three year old to help potty train her (JUST KIDDING, OF COURSE!! SCARED YA'LL, DIDN'T I?). We have kind of a sick sense of humor around here...it dates back to the 70's.

September 15, 2004 - Msg 23582: Thanks for the prayers guys. Boo, I'm a little reluctant to talk about the sauce for fear that it comes off as a sales pitch. That is not my intent here. So, that being said, if you want to know about our sauce...read on. If not, and that's fine too, skip to the next post. Here goes...the sauce is something my dad (he's an ordained Baptist minister, thus I go by Rev.Jr.) came up with 30 years ago. We had been giving it away in mason jars until we decided about 2 years ago to have it professionally bottled and put on the market. It looks like a mustard based sauce, but it is actually a mustard, vinegar and ketchup based sauce with a little kick. It doesn't have any added sugar so it doesn't burn when you cook with it. It's not sweet at all. It's called Reverend Marvin's Gourmet BBQ Sauce. We also have a "hot" version with a big kick. We've got a website with our story ,recipes, etc., and I'd be glad to give the address if anyone requests it. Otherwise, that's that about our sauce.Thanks for your interest.

September 15, 2004 - Msg 23590: Good evening, everyone! Sugarplum is a happy little girl, because I just learned I don't have to work tonight, but can stay home with her. She hates it when I leave for work. It's just pitiful!

Spot dear, tomorrow night about six I'll bring you a big picnic basket of goodies to see you through the storm time. I sure hope it isn't too bad, but that storm looks like a devil-spawn for sure. We'll pack up some sandwiches and some cold chicken, some baked beans and peach cobbler, and a cooler of cold nectarine crush. If you think of anything else you'd like to have, just say so, and I'll try to round it up for you. The Plum still has her little wagon, and she said she'd go around to everyone and pick up their contributions.

Well, guess I'll go settle back and watch a little TV, and scratch the Plum's ears a while, and rub her little shoulders. She loves that. She doesn't like to admit it, but she'll be ten at Christmas, and she gets an ache or a pain now and then.

September 16, 2004 - Msg 23595: Hey Folks! Asa asked if I was near the Alabama coast. I'm not...about 6 hours north *BUT* we are going to have some very bad weather up here begining this afternoon. Winds gusting up to 60-70 MPH with sustained winds of around 40 MPH. Tornadoes are possible and flooding is an issue as well.

I'm suppose to leave for a Mayberry event in WV today but I'm afraid that I'm not going to be able to go because of the weather. The expected 8-10 inches of rain in eastern TN is a big problem for me as well since I'd be traveling up through there. I hate missing an event...I've never done that...but I may have no choice.

September 16, 2004 - Msg 23601: Howdy, all. I just got a PowerPoint collection of pictures of Frances's handiwork, from my son in Florida. Oh, my stars! It's just awful! The damage is just unbelievable. I'm so grateful to the Lord that none of my friends and family sustained anything more than relatively light damage. One friend lost a huge tree, but that was the worst.

Floyd, you stay home where it's safe! And if you decide to even go outside, you button your coat!

I'm scheduled to work tonight, and hoping to get cancelled. The JOY group at church meets one night a month for supper and entertainment. Tonight's entetainment will be a concert by one of the tenors in our choir, who has just the most beautiful voice I've ever heard. I'd really love to be able to attend, so you all please help me in hoping I get cancelled.

Guess I'd better go find some lunch. Was there anything left over from last night? Some cold chicken, maybe?

Ivan hit west of us so that meant we got the bad side of the storm....Tornados. Here there and every where. 7 fatalities due to them bad boys. Over 100 tornadic systems were detected last night. We lost power about midnight but got it back about an hour ago. We were BLESSED :)!

September 17, 2004 - Msg 23608: Thanks for checkin' in, Dixie. I've been wondering how you made out in the storm. So glad you are safe. How scary it must have been with all those tornados. I have always said that its not the Hurricanes I fear but the tornados! I read in the paper that an 8 yr old girl was killed in Florida when a tree fell on their mobile home. I can't figure out why they were in a mobile home in that storm. If only they had taken themselves and the child to a shelter.

MDC, I really liked what you shared about JOY. I have never heard that before. Very good!

Well, I've been running around town all day shopping and I am dog-tired! Got alot done, though. I had to go to the pet store for something and my son, who is nine, talked me into getting him a hamster (and all the stuff that goes with it...cage, food, exercise ball, yada, yada..) and we no sooner left the store and pulled onto the highway when the hamster bit him hard and made him bleed. He changed his mind about the hamster within 3 miles of the store so we went back and traded the little devil for a little mouse (very cute!) named "Peanut". Peanut is very well mannered and friendly so he was a good choice. I had a pet mouse as a child so I am fond of them. Hey, that is something we never discussed on the porch. Lets talk about our favorite childhood pets. If anyone has any interesting stories, please share.... We had a dog when I was growing up who was very street-wise and roamed around. In the small town I grew up in there was no leash law or anything and everybody's dogs ran free back then. Well our dog (Whiskers was his name because he was a wire-haired terrier), he would always chase the car when we went to church on Sunday morning. One Sunday, he figured out we would be going so he left before we did. When we got to church the service was in progress and there was Whiskers laying up on the platform by the podium, scratching fleas. It seems a couple of the ushers tried to remove him and he refused and growled at them so they just let him remain there! We were very quiet because we were afraid that if he saw us he would get up and come to us and everyone would know he was our dog. OK, that's my story. Gotta go!

September 17, 2004 - Msg 23609: Good idea, Boo. I'll bet there will be some good stories. I can think of a few myself.

When I was about 13, my brother, who was only 4, had a pet chicken named Sam. Sam started out as a little purple Easter chick (why do people do that?) and he grew into a weird little white rooster. He was weird in that he had no idea he was a chicken. He lived in the back yard with my dog, a gentle little spaniel who wouldn't have dreamed of harming Sam. The two were the best of friends, and shared everything, including food and sleeping space. Sam ate dog food, in addition to keeping the bugs out of my mom's flowerbeds. He slept lying down, back to back with the dog. When the garbage trucks went down the back alley, my dog would run and bark at them, and Sam would run back there too, wings flapping, crowing madly. If anyone turned the back yard lights on at night, Sam would get up, fluff himself up, hop up onto the corner of the porch and crow at the light. As I said, one weird little rooster, but a great pet. OK, that's my childhood pet story, or at least one of them.

September 17, 2004 - Msg 23610: I hope all are well back east. We are having a delighful fall here with nice cool nights. crisp clear cool mornings and warm but not hot afternoons. 74 yesterday. (That was for you Boo) Almost guilty enjoying it with all you folks got going on on the east coast. Prayers go with you.
My story is a dog story. When I was around 5 or 6 a beautiful border collie ended up on our door step and I talked my folks into letting me keep him. I named him Prince and he was just the best dog a little feller could want. Would greet me at the school bus stop every afternoon and carry on like he hadn't seen me in a year. One day Prince had an indiscretion with a neighbors German Shepard and soon Prince was carrying a litter of puppies. Yep, Prince had become a Princess. Well she gave birth a to fine litter of pups. We gave all but one away, a male, (this time my Dad checked) that we named Alfy. What a great dog he was also. Funny, but I kept calling my dog Prince although she wasn't one anymore. Just couldn't manage to ever stick the ess on the end of it. :)

September 17, 2004 - Msg 23611: Speaking of dogs, any of you porchsters gone through this.....we have a 15 year old spaniel/poodle I fear is at the end of her days. She's losing control of her bladder, can't hear, can barely see, seems pretty much disoriented. My wife and I know what we have to do, it's just difficult. We got her a year after we were married and she really is a part of the family. I don't want her to suffer, but at the same time I don't want to see her go. Guess I'm being selfish. Didn't mean to be so down on a Friday.

September 17, 2004 - Msg 23612: We understand, Rev Jr. Dogs are a part of the family, especially if you have them as long as you have. The dog (Whiskers) I told my story about was adopted into my family when I was a toddler and he died when I was about 12, so he was very improtant to me. We went everywhere together and one day he started to have seizures and kidney failure. He tried to go under the house and die but we drug him out and took him to the vet, poor thing. If I recall, the vet put him to sleep at that time and it was tough. He was a really special dog.

Asa, why do you want to go and cause me "heartaches..nothin' but heartaches!"? It's steamy here! You know, I had a Border Collie, too, when I was a kid. We only had her for a short time, though. She had been abandoned by an irresponsible neighbor. She was pregnant at the time so we kept her until the pups were born and then got good homes for her and the pups. She was a great dog and I remember well the day the pups were born. I think I was 9 at the time and I sat underneath the house with her to comfort her while every one of the pups were born. It was really amazing for a 9 yr old. We kept one pup and named her Blossom. One of the pups was white with light eyes and we discovered she was deaf. I can still see the back of her little white head when I would call and all the other pups would come running while she just sat there with her back to me. We found her a very special home with lots of kids. I'm thinking they named her Angel.

Ro, loved the rooster story!

Speaking of pets, my son's new mouse escaped from his exercise ball and my son and I searched and searched until we found him under my bed. It took awhile but we finally captured him and put him in his cage. Boy, this is fun already!

He is a red merle (instead of black and white, he is red and white - I have always been partial to reds!) When I first go married my husband decided he wanted to raise chickens - why - I don't know! but I ended up nursing a little rooster from the clutches of death - his name was Fred. Fred was a good boy but he later went to live with my mom and dad on their farm. Fred soon ended up in the stew pot and mom and dad dearly enjoyed Fred.
And of course we now have the goats - who will be in a parade tomorrow!

That is a tough situation you got therte Rev. Jr. We had to have our 14 year old Doxie put down the day after Christmas. Very hard afterwards cause I missed him so much. The desicion to put him asleep was not that hard because he was in a lot of pain and we couldn't stand that, but later the pain was intense. And we went out and got another Doxie right away, not to replace Sammy but to ease some of the void in our hearts. Good luck on whatever you do.
