Mary Wiggins thank you kindly for asking about me. Y'all wax so eloquently here I fear I don't have much to add to the conversation, and I don't want to be like Goober with his beard. So I'm content to just sit back and rock and listen to all the wonderful conversation. But my garden has done well. It's starting to wind down now as the days get shorter and the nights cooler. My corn is about all harvested, and the tomatoes are coming on strong. Harvesting is so much fun. And we will be doing a fireworks show on Labor Day night for our local baseball team. From there it will be a bunch of high school homecoming games. They aren't to big though. Our big ones will come in November when the ski resorts open, they are lavish with the money.
Hope you all have a great weekend. And prayers for our Laci.

Hope everyone is having a peaceful evening. Husband and I took the kids to McDonalds tonight thinking if they were playing, we would actually be able to have a conversation....it didn't really work out that way. I tried the new chicken strips at McD's and I can't say much for them.

We'll be watching for a word from you. I know you won't read this until everything is all over, but that's okay. When you do read it, you'll know that we were with you.

Boo, the cake that the Plum ate was a white cake. I've heard the chocolate thing too, so I don't let her have it. Yesterday and today she has seemed to be just fine, acting like her usual little bubbly self. The labs next week will be interesting, but I really expect them to be normal. I think this was just some flukey thing and will disappear.

Charlotte Tucker, what a sweetheart you are for taking in those two abandoned pups, and shame on whoever did it. I guess I just don't understand the mindset of a person like that. I'm sorry your other dog is in a snit about it, but I'll bet he'll get over it. Is he an older dog?

Just got back from visiting my friend with her new one week old baby boy. He is so sweet and tiny! Smaller than my babies were and much smaller than her first. I just need a boy!!
Hope Laci is recovering well!! As well as all of the family. It is hard on them too..probably harder on mommy than little Laci! I remember when I balled at the Drs office with the pediatrician when we thought our baby might have to have surgery, on her brain at that! All is well though! And I feel sure that all will be well with little Laci!

Laci came through surgery like a Champ!
Doctor said everything went well,we got to see her in ICU around 11:30-her color was good,she looked great,considering. She was still kinda out of it,but could hear us. I told her how proud I was of her,praised her for being such a brave girl and that lots of people loved her.Thank y'all for loving and praying for that baby.God heard each prayer and answered it.Y'all are very dear to me-love each and every one of you! I'll keep you posted.She may come home Sunday or Monday!

I haven't had a chance to read the post, but I wanted to post before I did, to say hello to all.
I have been so busy around here, from Feb. to June it was attending to our sons in the Military, they have settled down some now with Jerry in NY. and our Sgt. in Iraq we're not on the road with them now, but I sure am on pins and needles where my baby boy is concerned being where he is. I try to stay busy and just wait for the times he gets to call home. He is doing fine but please remember him in your prayers and also Jamie is in afganistan is that how you spell it ? Remember her also and of course all our troops and their families. Then in July came all the ice cream socials and I made so much ice cream I can still see it in my dreams, our best seller was my blackberry ice , I made it for 2 different socials and it went well at both of them. Oh my there was all kinds of flavors dozens of people made ice cream and it all was just great. I've been working my garden, canning like nobodies bussiness and I sure am beat. As I've had to work as always and this last 12 days I just had one day off, but I do have the week end now and am I ready for it. Plus on top of all this we had the family picnic here at our place, it went very well. People stayed for 11 hrs. they all said this was the best one ever, they usally go home with in a 2 or 3 hrs. but those were at the park. So as far as we know they well be here at our country home from now on. We've got a wiennie roast planned for our church in Sept or maybe it will be Oct. For in Sept. we are getting ready for our Fall Festival, our church has a booth there and we do a pretty good trade, Stuffed bake potatoes and pork chop sands are our best sellers, this year we have ordered in Bibles to give away to anyone that wants one and our youth put labels in them at church the other night. We wanted to give something to the community so we decieded to try this. Then theres the bake sale in Oct. at the Robinson Fall Festival, then it's time for all that holiday cooking see I told you I have been busy and writing this I see I'm going to stay busy, we still haven't got all moved up here yet, but we surelove it here. When my son went over Ididn't think I could go another day, so I just try to stay busy, I sure have missed y'all I hope I can slow down just enough to say hey once in awhile. God Bless y'all, your my extended Family and I've grown to love each and everyone of you.

Miss Ellen Brown, it's good to hear from you. Sounds like your life is a regular whirlwind. Prayers for your son in Iraq. I know you won't rest easy until he's home. I have a cousin who is an ex-Marine fighter pilot, and he still gets emails from men who are on active duty over there. He forwards many of them to me, and believe me, the impressions of those who are on the scene are a lot different from the contrived and slanted claptrap that the media tries to feed us. From what I can gather, those men think we are where we're supposed to be, doing what had to be done, either now or very soon thereafter. Our choice was to engage them on their soil, or ultimately on our own.

Asa, I think a boocoo is way more than a smidgen, and just a little bit longer than a whole bunch, but not quite as long as forever. Hope that helps!

Well, the Plum is actively campaigning for her supper, so guess I'd better feed her before she has a spell. Might just feed myself, too. Wish I had some of Spot's good cooking, but I have some fairly decent leftovers, and I like leftovers. Might just bake a potato, too. Yum!

Sterling, I would call the company, they may have accidentally switched your plan, that happened to me once, and they were real nice about crediting the minutes and putting things back the way they were supposed to be. I also have Verizon, and it sounds like the same plan Alyce has. Two phones...70 bucks. A lot of companies want to keep you as a customer, so if you talk to them real nice-like, but firm, you might get some good results.

Nice to see Ellen Brown posting again! I can see why we haven't heard much from you, my, you have been busy!

Guess I better go study the insides of my eyelids! ;) (That's what my dad used to say he was doing if we caught him snoozing in church!)

August 27, 2004 - Msg 23252: For me, it's more special to watch the broadcast eps, because they are "spontaneous". When I see that TAGS is on, I have to sit down and watch. Whereas the ones I've got recorded, I tend to make time to watch them; and pause them now and then so I can water the garden or do the dishes or something. But when the "real" thing is on, I take 30 minutes out of my schedule and sit down and watch. If that makes sense.
And by the way, I know I don't say much, but my thoughts have been with our porchsters who have been going thru a lot lately (Mavis and Possom and Plum). I'm sensitive that way too. I just don't post much anymore.

However, I'm really looking forward to the first season tapes that are reportedly coming out in October. It's my understanding that they'll be complete and uncut, even with the old commercials. Does anyone know, is that right? I really hope so. With something like that on tape, I can see planning a TAGS party with family and friends, and everyone really enjoying a trip down memory lane.

I grew up in ATL and we always called it "coke". "Wanna go to the snack bar for a coke?" Didn't matter what kind of soda it was, but if you really wanted CokeŽ it was called "co-cola". I'm in agreement with watching the televised eps just for the spontinaity of it. I always hope that ONCE, JUST ONCE I'd see an uncut ep. It's almost sport to guess what scene will get chopped up. Alyce let me tell you from living in Bristol, & hearing about the races, especially the night race, all year long, tickets to this race are some of the hardest tickets to get in ANY sport according to BMS & NASCAR. But if you have ever been lucky enough to attend a night race here, you would see why, I love attending the race, but would rather be somewheres else when the race is in town if I don't have a ticket. Mavis, hang in there, honey. Those anniversary days can be rough, and all the holidays will be hard. It took me several years to get back somewhere near the fun and cheerful spirit of Christmas. I don't think it will ever be quite the same, but it's better than it was at first. There was a fringe benefit, though. While all the "holiday spirit" was gone, inside my heart there was a quiet place that was more aware than ever before of the real meaning of Christmas. I guess it was just knowing that my dear husband, and now my parents and grandson as well, are with the Savior, who was really born, and really died, and really returned to heaven, and now the ones I loved so much are there with Him. Oh, I've finally reached a place where I once again enjoy all the lights and the color and the music and the good food and fellowship that surround the holidays, but it has a little different flavor for me now. It will take time, but your heart will begin to heal, as your mother would want it to. I have a little poem I'd like to send to you. It helped me a little, and perhaps it will help you too.

Possum, I'm just so happy and so excited for you, that little Laci is doing so well. Isn't it remarkable, how much a fragile little flower like that can tolerate? She'll be up and into everything before you know it. God is good.

I think that is it with me too, even tho I get local only and not TV land, I still like that "pause that refreshes" without trying to find a tape etc. It becomes MY half-hour at the TV.
Alyce, I have had an Olympus 35 mm for about 10 years and it has always given me great pictures. It is a med priced one and not even an SLR.
One time the electronic led screen went out and a local camera shop fixed it for 30 bucks!
Bristol is now on my "to do someday" list, but if it is like the indy 500, tickets are often willed to someone! Now tht's hard to get!
Boo- just curious about you new neighbor, any update on that situation?

The reason I like to watch the broadcasts of TAGS rather than recordings is that I like the fact that so many other people are watching the same thing at the same time....make sense? Its like some kind of "togetherness". Sometimes I think,'I wonder which one of my friends from the porch are watching this with me?'. To answer your question about my neighbor, no news. My son has been staying away and I don't see as many neighbor kids hanging around there anymore.

Boo, you're absolutely right about the "togetherness" aspect of watching the broadcast episodes. I've felt that same way, and it's a good feeling.

I spent the afternoon in a friend's garage, sorting through donated medical supplies, and labeling the containers for shipment to Mongolia. We had everything from diapers to IV fluids, from feeding tubes to baby blankets. Everything has to be sorted into associated piles, bagged, labeled and boxed up, with a list of the contents in each box. It has to be able to pass customs inspection. We got it done. This will probably be a monthly occurrence.

I ain't afraid to eat 'em. And boy are they tasty! I can usually only eat one or two at a time though because they are a very very rich food. We bread them like Big Tom does. They aren't the least bit slimy, Alyce. Romeena, you are an angel of mercy for packing those supplies. Bless your heart! Our two pups are doing great. Such sweet little fellows and they haven't messed in their cage once. Someone, I think MDC asked if they had collars. No, they didn't and we live way out in the boonies. I think they were dumped but I can't imagine why. They are the sweetest most well-mannered little fellows (actually one is female). We call them Hershey and Smokey. We think they are some type of terrier.

August 30, 2004 - Msg 23290: Good afternoon, folks! Alyce, mushrooms are goooood! If they seem slimy to you, I'm wondering if you have been washing them. That will make them slimy. Instead of washing them, just dampen a paper towel and wipe off any soil that might be on them. It's usually not dirt, anyway, but rather a peaty mixture that the growers use. When I broil a steak in the oven, or even when I grill one outside, I like to make a side of mushrooms. I get big old firm white ones, or even the brown ones, and slice them thick. Then in a non-stick skillet I put a bit of butter and some sliced onion and the mushrooms. Cook them over med/hi heat, flipping them often. When they begin to brown and shrink a bit, toss in a tablespoon or so of flour and stir it around, too. Shake in some Worcestershire sauce and add a bit of water. Those of you who have wine or cooking wine in your pantry might add some of the red version instead of water. Stir it around until it cooks down a bit, and you have a mushroom sauce or gravy that is downright larrupin'! I still don't want to pick my own, though. I'm afraid I might be seeing things later, like angels as I'm rising up to heaven!

Does anyone know how to contact our old friend Tom? I miss his poetry, and am really worried that something might have happened to him. I know he was in very poor health, and dependent upon family to care for him to some extent. Sure would like to hear from him. I wonder if Floyd would know some way to backtrack him?

Well, gotta work tonight, so I need to get a few things done this afternoon. I'll be worthless tomorrow, as I have to work tomorrow night, too.

I never seem to get caught up with it no matter what. I also don't like mushrooms, never could get used to the musty taste.

Sounds like you have a nice pair of pups, Charlotte. My pup, Belle (that was abandoned in May) is huge now! She is one beautiful dog, though. She has a chocolate coat that just shines and those hazel eyes! I think I have figured her out to be a chocolate lab/Weimeraner (sp?) mix. We really like her but she is an escape artist already. I looked out the window the other day to see her perched atop the back fence like a bird on a wire. She was just standing there like she was in a highwire act, looking into the field behind us.....then she jumped, of course. So far she always comes back.

Well, I'm off to do....you guessed it, LAUNDRY!

August 30, 2004 - Msg 23292: Ro: I dont wash, pick, eat, order, get near a mushroom..haha..so its not me..I have had meals with them in it and they just seem slimy. I do use Cream of Mushroom soup in cooking as well as mushroom gravy sometimes (the envelope). Its ok that way..but the only way. My husband will buy them and sautee them for his steaks, etc..but only him.
Boo: yep, I havent caught up with mine either today. I have a meeting tonight and my daughter has gymnastics,so it will be waiting for me.
I start a new job tomorrow too..I am cleaning house for a couple who caters. They go to our church..sweet people, known them a long time. They catered my wedding. But Ill do that twice a month..HOpe it works out.

Both my mom and grandma used to do laundry on Mondays, AND my wife's mom and grandma used to do it on mondays. Seems like the sewers around the country would overflow on Mondays! teehee
I recall, as a youngster, we'd hang up diapers on the line outdoors before school and take em down after school. Way before pampers, The "rich" folks had Dydee service where a truck would pick up and deliver. All our clothes were hung out on the line, so our levis would be stiff as cardboard. We'd get a pair just broke in, with marbles and string and tops etc in the pockets, three or four days worth of "softening up" and then rats, we'd come home from school and there'd be another clean stiff pair!
Just the musings of a guy remembering laundry day at my home in the non- air conditioned days in Phoenix in the 50's! (also, our washer was the kind with the wringer that flipped over to the big sink for rinsing) Ahhh, those were the days!

Karen called and asked if I wanted to go with her over there for family night (from 6 to 9pm). It was great because we were about the only people there and it was cool for a change. I saw the most beautiful sunset. Did you see the big orange moon tonight? It was incredible.

Alyce, I am feeling pretty glad I have a washer and dryer after what MDC had to say, aren't you? At least we don't have to build a fire out back and beat the clothes on rocks or anything. How did anyone survive without disposable diapers. I was thinking, there is one good thing about cloth diapers...you never see soiled ones in department store parking lots. Don't you just hate to see that? I don't know why its so hard to carry a dirty diaper to a trash can.

August 30, 2004 - Msg 23299: I remember cloth diapers all too well. The disposables didn't come out until my youngest son was about eight months old. They were awful. They didn't fit well, the legs gapped, and they didn't hold much. My son quickly learned that he could reach inside the legs and pull the soggy lining out in chunks, which he threw on the floor beside his crib. About two weeks of that, and I decided that cloth diapers had seen us through the first three kids, they'd see him through as well, and I never bought any more. I had a dryer while he was a baby, but he got a rash anytime I dried his diapers in it, so they always went on the line in the sunshine.

I declare, every time I see the episode where Barney tries to recite the Preamble, it just cracks me up. He's just so funny, and then that editing oversight makes it all the funnier, as his hair goes from combed to frazzled to combed again about four times. Wouldn't you think somebody would have caught that? I think it's hilarious!

Well, guess I'll work a few online jigsaw puzzles, and then hit the hay. Was supposed to work tonight, but they called and offered me the night off - patient census was a little low - and it didn't take me long to accept. Have a great night's sleep, everyone. August 31, 2004 - Msg 23301: Morning DEARS. I remember cloth diapers - my Dad used the old ones to wash cars with. I can still remember my Mamma swishing them around in the toilet before taking them to the sink to wash. YUCK! I just hope the disposable ones are bio-degradeable.

We're watching hurricane Frances very closely down here in S.FLA. I'm planning to drive up to Tampa or maybe even ATL with our irreplaceable valuables (art, photos, data, music). Big Jeff has to stay - something about territorial protection. He's making plans now to go stay at his client's law office - it's built like a fortress. We have aluminum shutters for the house and some friends to help us get them on. Sure is excitin'! Kinda like adventure sleeping.

Ro, I think that the scene you talked about is one of the funniest ever and I agree about the hair. They were probably too cheap to re-shoot in those days. I'm SURE they didn't realize at that time that the show would be such a big hit for generations to come and be in syndication for so many years that folks would catch any little (or big for this matter) mistake. I love to catch mistakes like that, it makes it all the more funny. I also love the one where Barney and Thelma Lou are on the couch in the dark and when the lights come on Barney is covered with lipstick. That one kills me every time!

I remember some of my younger nephews wearing those first disposable diapers and they were as you said, gappy in the legs. My Aunt still used them, though. She had three boys close together and almost went nuts trying to take care of them (they were a handful). They are all grown up and great guys now. You know, I don't think I would have handled rinsing diapers in the toilet very well!

August 31, 2004 - Msg 23303: Yes, you would, Boo. We do what we have to do. I rinsed diapers in the toilet, then put them in the infamous "diaper bucket" which was a plastic bucket with a lid. There was a product called "Diaper Sweet" (ha!) that you put in the bucket with some water, and the diapers were dropped in that to aoak until enough accumulated to be washed. To wash them, you just dumped the whole thing in the washer and spun it out, then started a complete wash cycle. That is, if you had an automatic washer. I didn't, at least not with the first two kids. I had a wringer washer. In that case, the diapers had to be removed from the bucket one at a time and hand-wrung, then put in the washer and washed as usual. You'd think that people would have thought twice about having kids in those days!!

Well, I hear TAGS coming on, so I'll go watch, and think of all of you who may be watching at the same time. Sure is a nice, warm and fuzzy feeling! Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena
