Thank you for your kind words about my children, Ro. Erin is just getting sweeter all the time (and less mischevious) and thank God, Sean is doing so much better; no more stomach trouble and the special tutoring is helping so much. Today he cleaned the bathroom, his room, and swept and mopped my kitchen floor without being asked because he said he felt like he had been "neglecting" me by cleaning other people's homes for money and not helping me enough. He is amazing. How can I thank all of you enough who have prayed for him?!
Well, I am off to bed (sure missed TAGS tonight).

Just got to read the archives to catch up all the porch happenings. Whoooooeeeeee! So much chitchat!
Went to the big city auction last night. It was my aunt's estate. My mother's side is not very close and so she found out through the auction barn that this was her sister in laws furniture, etc. It seems that my aunt is in a nursing home and really doesn't know anyone anymore - not even her children. All but one of my aunts and uncles on my mother's side became a "little touched in the head" during their latter years. That is not to be a mean comment but I told my husband that I should be a doozy if I live that long. My mother is in her right mind and to look at her, you wouldn't know that she is 80 years old. She can outwork me most of the time. Both her and dad are troopers. So anyway - I bought a vase that had belonged to my great grandmother. My mom was going to buy it but there was a nick in it so she said it was worthless. That's okay - for $12.50 - it can be worthless.
By the way Charlotte - do you ever create materials for special education students? I know you are the writer on the porch.
I remember s&h green stamps - my mom got a card table and chairs for about 1100 thousand books - that was a lot of saliva!!
Talk to you all later!

Hooray for you, homemaker, for buying that vase, nick and all. Who knows what interesting story might be behind that nick? Of course, you'll probably never be able to find out, but that doesn't matter. To have a vase that was your great-grandmother's is really special. Too bad that the family dynamic is what it is, that you had to buy it at an auction barn! Still, you got it, and that's wonderful!
Sterling, I guess I'll always answer to Romeena, not Ramona. Actually, I'd probably answer to it on the street. I have used it as my email name, and as my entry into so many sites, for a number of years now, and I really consider it my second persona.
Asa, how's Barney? The Plum was asking about him yesterday, wants to know how much he has grown. She'd cherish a picture of him, if you have that capability with your email.
Well, I don't know whether to go out and plant small bedding things, or get in the car and go on another rose hunt. That big old rose bed just swallowed up nine bushes, not even quite half full. Maybe I'll hunt today, while the garden centers aren't so crowded, and plant tomorrow. The roses I'll keep for next week when my landscaper friend can plant them. I don't plant anything that big and that sensitive myself. I believe in Andy's advice - Call the Man! OK, off I go!

Hey Ro, Barney is growing like a weed. He is sadly out of that puppy breath stage, but it is fun to watch him as he gets stronger and more coordinated each day. He can actually run straight now. Used to be when he ran his rear legs were not in sync with his front legs and so he ran crooked. It was a hoot. I have some good pictures, I just need to figure out how to send them. I'll work on that.
Did my eyes decieve me or was that New Neighbor poked her head in here? Golly, I have been waiting to hear from Courtney. I was hoping she might call. I reckon she is busy and all up at Utah State. Call me this weekend if you read this and get a chance N.N.

Hi, all. Well, the Plum has taught herself another trick. I declare, what am I to do with that little dickens? On two previous occasions, I've left my chair in the living room for some reason or other, and returned to find a wet spot on the seat. That was rather disconcerting - I'm old, but not that old yet - so it had to be the Plum. Yet the spot was colorless and odorless. Hmmmm. Couldn't figure it out. Last night, I left for only a few minutes and when I returned, I caught the Plum lying in the chair, munching happily on a big clump of ice cubes which she had obviously lifted out of my tea glass, without spilling a drop. You know how the ice will fuse together, and floats to the top of the glass. How I would love to have a video of her removing that ice! She won't touch an ice cube out of the freezer, presumably because they would stick to her nose and/or tongue. Apparently once it has floated in my tea glass for a while, it's acceptable. So now I'll have to carry my glass with me when I leave the chair, because she's bound to spill it sooner or later. (Hmm, I thought I detected the flavor of carrot in my tea now and then!) Can't you just picture her lifting that big old chunk of ice up and out of that glass, looking over her shoulder all the time, hoping I wouldn't catch her? That little rascal is a caution, sure enough!

It was a beautifuly done film, and right on the money I thought. Big Jeff thought it was NOT anti-semetic (he's a Jew) and that only anti-semetic people would think that it was. He thought the violence was a little excessive, but did agree that in reality it was problably just that terrible. This is the guy who thrives on Terminator movies! I cried. I hear a pet-tion will be out Monday for Mel Gibson to make another film about St. Francis of As-isi called "Man of the Passion". I'd sign it!~ Mrs. Wiley

Mayberry Girl, that's beautiful, and every reference rings true. You just can't beat the word of God, to meet you at your point of need, whatever it may be. Thanks for sharing.
Pipeman, I remember hula hoops. I about pretzelized myself trying to keep the thing going. I had a mood ring, and our kids gave my husband a pet rock for his birthday! He accepted it with great grace and enthusiasm, and kept it on his desk for a very long time. (It's probably still around here somewhere.) Remember the Slinky toys? I guess you can still buy them, but when they first came out, every kid had to have one, whether they had a stairway for it to walk down or not.
How about the plastic bubble stuff? Remember that? You put a blob of the plastic stuff on the end of a little tube, and then you'd blow a bubble. When it got about as big as the stuff would allow, you pinched it off the tube to seal the hole, and you had a little bubble, or balloon. They were usually lopsided, and would get wrinkly as they dried, but some would last for days. We thought they were very cool.
Boo, that's wonderful news about Sean. You must be so proud of him, and I well remember how it feels when your child makes that commitment. Tell him I'm happy for him, please.
Well, have a great week, everybody. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

I like the conversations that come up about the toys we used to play with. I played whith a whole lot of Barbies and all the stuff like the Barbie camper and house, yada, yada, yada. I always had a slinky somewhere around the house and loved that stuff that you blew bubbles with, Ro! I can still remember what it smelled like (kinda toxic-like!). Here's something I don't think we have talked about: what kind of music did you listen to as kids and teens? I liked Beatles and Monkeeys and Hermans' Hermits, Rolling Stones and Paul Rever and The Raiders....then as an adolescent, Elton John, Bread (remember "If A Picture Paints A Thousand Words..."?), Billy Joel and Journey, oh and I can't forget James Taylor.
Well, I think I will head off to bed. My sister and I are getting up early to walk (groan). My good friend who is only 38 had a little stroke yesterday and it made me think!

Boo, isn't he related to Santa? ;) Half-brother or something. Folks, I have a problem that is right up your alley, being that this here is a TAGS porch and this is a TAGS-related problem. And I wanted to get you opinion on it. I recently bought another TAGS 2-dvd set, this time at Walmart. They are the same episodes as the ones I have already(I guess those are the only eps they have out so far), but I bought it because some of the episodes on my other set won't play for some reason. Now, I bought the new one mainly for the episodes themselves but I was also interested by what it said on the package about there being "loads" of bonus material including some old cartoons and even old commercials, one with Andy himself. Well, I was watching the dvds and though the episodes seem to work fine and include the epilogues to them, those bonus cartoons and commercials are nowhere to be found. They just ain't there! I checked everything I could check, but all you can do is play all the episodes or select a particular episode to play, but no bonus material stuff is anywhere on the menu on either dvd. I was naturally kind of perturbed by this and I decided I would take them back to Walmart, get my money back, and write to the distributer to tell them how displeased I was that they would put all that stuff to entice you to buy it on the box when it isn't there on the dvd. And also maybe tell Walmart about this company's deceptive advertising. I didn't get to it today, and it gave me second thoughts about what I should do so I thought I would ask my friends on the porch. I also thought I would ask if anyone else had bought this same set from Walmart or elsewhere. It has a logo called TVNite at the top right corner and it is from Raintree Video. The other thing I found weird is that they don't use the correct episode ti-tles(censored) as far as I know them. For Example, the episode with Opie and the dogs(which if I'm not mistaken is called Dogs, dogs, dogs) they call Dog Gone Opie! Does anyone else have these dvds from this particular company? I would hate to condemn them if this is just a faulty dvd and the other ones do have the extra's on them. Or should I just take the other one back and get another one to see if that one is the same way, and THEN write to them and/or tell Walmart about this? WWAD? What Would Andy Do? :) Thanks to anyone who responds to this and sorry it is so long! -Sterling Holobyte

Sterling, your question about the DVD is a good one. Like pipeman suggested, they could become a rarity - probably not, but anything is possible. My thought is that at the price of gasoline these days, I wouldn't make a special trip to return the thing, but if you're going anyway, then at least see if they'll let you exchange it and see if another one has all the advertised stuff. If it does, it would be great! If not, I think I'd write the maker.

My neighbors were on the boat as well, the Mr. was pulled out safely, the Mrs. is in the hospital. Their daughter was 26...and had them and her finaces parents to baltimore to get to know each other. A very sad thing...
As far as music...I am/was a HUGE Journey and KISS fan. Now...before you get all moved...I listen to all kinds of music...I'd be listening to KISS one day and The Happy Goodmans the next. I'm still that way...have seen KISS a couple times over the last few years...and have seen Journey several...actually will see them on the 3rd of July in Dayton this year! :-)
That's all for now...hope you all have a Mayberry day!

Hey Sterling, there are only 16 episodes out there that are in the public domain, so unless you go through Columbia House, who has the rights to TAGS, you will only find the same 16 eps available. I bought the full set a while back at Hastings for about 9 bucks. This set was marketed by Brentwood Comm. or something like that. All 16 eps are complete with the endings on them. They even have the original theme music with them. A lot of the other ones don't. So I don't know if that helps but you might want to try there. The quality of the DVD's was great to. Hope that helps.

Hey Goober. I am sorry about your Dad having a hard time. He is in my prayers as are you. I know how hard a time that is for you. My Dad has made an amazing recovery. He was sent home and seems to be as strong and clear headed as ever. The only concern is no one can seem to explain what happened. They run all kinds of tests and everything came back normal or negative. But he went downhill so fast and so low, I never expected him to pull through. I just wish we knew what happened. Guess you don't look a gift horse in the mouth though huh? Never did understand what the heck that means, but it sounded good right about there. LOL

After a long, dry sermon, the minister announced that he wished to meet with the church board after the service. The first man to arrive was a stranger.
“You misunderstood my announcement. This is a meeting of the board,” said the minister.
“I know,” said the man. “If there is anyone here more bored than I am, I’d like to meet him.”

As far as the "gift horse" saying, I have heard it explained this way. (pipeman, here's one for the western site)
When horses were our main means of transportation, (not that long ago, actually) if someone gave you a horse as a gift, it was considered very rude to check the horse's teeth and gums in front of the gift giver, because one can tell a lot about a horse's health by checking out his mouth, thus the saying....

GREETINGS MAYBERRY PORCH SITTERS!!
We just got back from our trip to Tulsa, Oklahoma. I have to tell you, now I know why Oklahoma's abbreviation is "OK." Those people there are "okay"! We had a wonderful time. We were able to see the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, and boy did they have some wonderful work in there. My husband walked out of there inspired and depressed at the same time! He said seeing all that wonderful artwork makes you want to get back home and paint, but you also realize how great the artists are whose work is displayed there! Well, I must thank you all for your prayers during our trip. We had a wonderful show, and when you have most of your life-savings sunk into a new business venture, it is always good to see such a positive response! The people there LOVED Pat's work, and they bought some of it too!;) Our trip to and from the show went smoothly, so I know those traveling mercies went right along with us. As a matter of fact, we arrived at our hotel Wednesday, right around 2:00p.m. If you remember last Wednesday, in that area and in Texas, there were torrential downpours. We had dry weather until 2 blocks from our hotel and then the sky just opened up! We only had two blocks to go in bad weather! By the way, if any one is interested in bronze sculptures, our booth was right in between two extremely talented men, both of whom had the most magnificent sculptures. I can give their names to any one who may be interested.
Goober, my prayers go out to your neighbor's daughter and fiance, please let us know if there is any more news.
Romeena, PICTURES please! I sure would love to see that garden of yours. If you do get some on the internet, let us know where to check them out at!
Thanks again, for keeping us in your prayers this past week, it was VERY much appreciated!

Mary Wiggins, I'm happy that Pat's show went well. I checked it out, thinking I might drive to Tulsa and see you all, but it's a pretty good drive from Dallas, so didn't try it. Would have been fun, though. Friends, for those who haven't seen Pat's work, he's fabulous! I have three of his prints, and get comments on them all the time. They're a beautiful addition to my home.
Well, off I go. Gotta throw toys for the Plum and wear her out a bit before I leave for work, so she'll sleep well. Have a lovely evening, friends. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Evening Folks,
Mayberry Girl, sorry I have to disagree with you but showing anger I believe is not exhibiting a lack of faith. In the nature of good and kind hearted discourse, I think the Bible is clear and shows that God the Father and God the Son both have exhibited anger. Anger and frustration can be positive emotions. They are not exclusively negative feelings. To say the ones faith needs to be perfect I think fly's in contradiction to Biblical teachings.

Interesting....I think I know the idea that Mayberry Girl was trying to get across. I think that if I took the time to cultivate my spiritual life more I would have the kind faith that would keep me from becoming angry and frustrated in many situations. I am interested in your comment: "To say ones faith needs to be perfect I think fly's in contradiction to Biblical teachings.". Could you explain your feelings a bit. I don't understand why faith shouldn't be perfect. Thanks, auh2o. Maybe I'm just not getting it...haha.
Good to have you back Mary Wiggins! Glad all went well.
I thought about all of you this morning when my sister and I took our morning walk. We were in an unfamiliar neighborhood (out in the country) when all of a sudden, out of nowhere, about 30 dogs came running toward us. They were all very nice dogs and we all had a big time together. Turns out they lived on a type of dog farm for strays. I looked at my sister and said, "Does this remind you of anything?", to which she said something like, "Giraffes are selfish!". Don't you love it?! Just another Mayberry moment in our busy day.
Gotta go spend some time with the boy....
Have a great evening,

March 09, 2004 - Msg 19949:
Boo,
The thought I was trying to convey (somewhat poorly) was in response to post #1994. In particular to the statement that "Faith is not secure if even the slightest opposition or disagreement causes any negative emotions." I simply do not believe that anger and frustration are negative emotions. For example Jesus showed great anger in John 2:15-16,
"And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables;
And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise."
How one acts on ones anger and frustration can most certainly be negative.
As for ones faith, being perfect I think is a fantastic goal. But, I don't believe one needs perfect faith, that is, as long as one believes in Jesus Christ and does what Jesus has asked him or her to do I feel that that individual is saved, perfect or not.
auh2o (sorry about the length)
March 09, 2004 - Msg 19950:
Boo, I think faith can't be perfect because we are not perfect. Maybe if we were divine beings...

Mary Wiggins, I'm glad you had a good time on your trip!
Ok, if you have been keeping up on my little TAGS dvd concern, I went back to Walmart(or walnut to some) and exchanged the dvd for another one. I took that one home and just played it little while ago, but it is the same deal with that one: no extras. So, I plan on taking that one back and, since they said they don't like to refund dvds after they're opened(well, how are you supposed to know if the extra's are really on it if you don't open it?! Which I did say to the clerk and she said yeah, they could probably work something out if this one doesn't work right), but I think I will try one other one that I saw there at the same price but different company(I think). If I could find the Columbia House ones there that Asa mentioned I surely would buy them! It would be nice to have the original theme music instead of the weird tunes they put on these other ones.

You've got me interestedin the Columbia House DVD's... would LOVE to see uncut w/original commercials!auh2o, great point. When anger is justified (as in Our Lord's zeal for His Father's House) or when sadness for the hard hearts of others happens, it can be a type of "fraternal correction" and you could be doing a service to someone! I also see that ~ mayberry girl makes the point that we shouldn't crumble when we are tested. I read somewhere that the Hebrew translation of this part of the Our Father: "...and lead us not into temptation..." can also correctly translate to: "... and do not put us to the test...". Just thought that was interesting. Laww, how some are tested. I had the same thought Sterling did. I don't know anybody who has the will to be perfect - without help from above. "WE can do nothing. But with GOD all things are possible."

auh2o>> I see what you are trying to convey. No one is perfect in faith, but being human I don't believe that anyone can have secure faith really. Yes, anger and frustration is negative but it doesn't have to stay negative. It all depends upon how you convey it. Even Jesus was human and thus human characteristic came out from time to time. It was to be expected. During, outburst such as the example you gave of Jesus, he was not completely connected...it was his human side. Just as he had fear, because he was human. I get frustrated many times when I see how people don't seem to understand what I do. Instead of lashing out, I now just explain the best I can at the time and pray that it will one day be understood by the person or people I tried to convey to. Perhaps using the word "faith" was the wrong word to use. I just consider "faith" and "divine understanding" the same. Other people have different definitions and that is okay, just as long as the main point is understood no matter what word you use.
As far a contradicting the Bible.... the Bible is full of contradictions. Why? Because God gave us free will and free minds to think about what was is right and wrong with us. (If that made since..I hang with a ton of philosophers..lol) Besides, there are so many translations done now that much of the REAL word is being lost. (I will soon have a Bible translated by someone who grew up knowing Aramaic...I already have read the first bit and already see descrepincies with modern day translations)The Bible gives us one guide to perfecting faith. Not sure if faith can be totally perfected by us that incarnate, but many have actually come very close.
There are some excerpts in the Bible that speaks of a wrathful God. God is not wrathful...He IS pure love and not angry, perhaps disappointed but anger is not within him. 1 John 4:7-21, 1 John 5:1-5.
More to come....
