December 07, 2003 - Msg 17479: If you are a fan of the Cosby Show, you will know that it was Heathcliff Huxtable. On a show where Olivia has to make a book about a grown up, he tells her all kinds of made up stories, like he invented RECESS. LOL Then finally when his father drives over to help the kids with the truth, Cliff tells the story about how during the war they had to recycle tin foil and he had rolled it into a ball and it was so huge that the newspaper came and took his picture with the tin foil ball. The kids look at the Grandpa to make sure Cliff is telling the truth and he nods and smiles. Quite a cute show.

December 07, 2003 - Msg 17480: As far as the Christmas memories goes, I remember one year, my mom and dad had gone to way yonder too much trouble on our Christmas. There were three of us girls and the whole living room was full of toys. After we opened presents, which took a long time, we sat down for breakfast and during the blessing, Mom heard me crying. Afterwards she asked me why I was crying. I said, "I don't know what to play with first." Among the things we got were the little aluminum fridge, stove and sink, (anyone remember those) and a HUGE set of dishes. Even had little plastic silverware and beautiful goblets and everything. I can't really remember all of the things we got but the room was full. I guess it was the first time they could enjoy buying for all three of us. Bonny was a year and four months old, Lisa two years and seven months and I was four and a half. Now days, Mike and I buy Kyle one big gift and stuff a stocking. My family is so large and they all buy the kids gifts, so we know he will have more than enough.

Then, my junior year in high school, my mom had lots of presents wrapped and she and my sisters went out to get some last minute stuff and left me home alone. I have always been curious and hate to be in suspense, so I carefully unwrapped my gifts and checked them out and then rewrapped them. Dirty me, dirty me, I'm disgusted with myself! My favorite gift that year was a large print Bible I had been asking for.

Anyone else remember getting: an easy bake oven, your first camera, the doll that had a lever in the back of the neck and when you pulled it the face would turn and it had a crying face a laughing face and a sleeping face, a crazy little thing called a skipsydoodle. It was the right size for a small child to use as a teeter totter. It was made of blue plastic. I have talked to many people but remember these. It made an awesome sled. You could lay down on it and it was one speedy ride.

Ah, memories!

December 07, 2003 - Msg 17486: JOKE TIME: Do Cats Go To Heaven?

A cat dies and goes to Heaven. God meets him at the gate and says, "You have been a good cat all of these years. Anything you desire is yours, all you have to do is ask."

The cats says, "Well, I lived all my life with a poor family on a farm and had to sleep on hardwood floors."

God says, "Say no more." And instantly, a fluffy pillow appears.

A few days later, 6 mice are killed in a tragic accident and they go to Heaven. God meets them at the gate with the same offer that He made the cat. The mice said, "All our lives we've had to run. Cats, dogs and even women with brooms have chased us. If we could only have a pair of roller skates, we wouldn't have to run anymore."

God says, "Say no more." And instantly, each mouse is fitted with a beautiful pair of tiny roller skates.

About a week later, God decides to check and see how the cat is doing. The cat is sound asleep on his new pillow. God gently wakes him and asks, "How are you doing? Are you happy here?"

The cat yawns and stretches and says, "Oh, I've never been happier in my life. And those Meals on Wheels you've been sending over are the best!"

December 08, 2003 - Msg 17489: Hi everyone! I am back home and had a very nice weekend, thanks. I got to meet Romeena and Sugarplum, Ro's 2 beautiful daughters and one of her grandsons! It was great. Let me tell you Ro is every bit as wonderful in person as on the porch. I only wish we could have spent more time together. We did get to visit and went to a concert in which one of her daughters sang and she has a great voice. We really enjoyed it. We will have to meet again in Fredricksburg, maybe at the same time next year. Oh, and Sugarplum really does love baby carrots. I saw it with my own eyes! She is a precious little dog, so sweet.

My family and I stayed in an old restored farmhouse built in 1880 and it was beautiful. The only problem was I almost froze to death! Ya'll know how thin my blood is from living down here on the water. It got so cold Friday night I just couldn't get warm. I think I am going to stop complaining about how we don't get any cold weather down here. I found out this weekend that I am a wimp.

Well, think I will hit the sack. I'm worn out!

December 08, 2003 - Msg 17493: Just thought I would share some old Cherokee wisdom with the porch.

An elder Cherokee man was teaching his grandchildren about life. He said to them, "A fight is going on inside me...It is a terrible fight, and it is between two wolves. One wolf represents fear, anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other stands for joy peace, love, hope, sharing, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, friendship, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. This same fight is going on inside you, and inside every other person, too." They thought about it for a minute, and then one child asked his grandfather, "Which wolf will win?" The old Cherokee simply replied......"The one you feed."

December 09, 2003 - Msg 17505: Wooohoo! I met Boo and Mr. Boo, and the two little Boo-lings. What lovely people! Boo is a sweetheart, just like she is here on the porch, and her hubby is a very fine man, obviously has a gentle heart, and I liked him very much. The Plum plopped her little self down beside him and rested her head on his lap, so guess he's okay! Their son is a fine, polite, very sweet little boy, and Baby Girl is adorable, with an impish smile and eyes that dance with mischief. We had a wonderful time. We didn't get to spend as much time together as I'd have liked, as I had some other commitments, but I'm sure we'll get together again.

Pipeman, you're absolutely right about posting that number. What was I thinking??? Mayberry girl, I loved your story about the two wolves. So very true. So often we're careful about what our children hear and watch, but we forget that we're impressionable too, whether we realize it or not.

Favorite Christmas stories? I've told this before on the porch, I think, but some of you are new and might enjoy it. A lot of Christmasses ago, when our oldest son was almost four, we had scrimped and saved and bought him a tricycle for Christmas. On Christmas Eve, we had been to our family's traditional gathering, and returned home very late, with two very sleepy children. We put them in bed, and my husband began to assemble the little tricycle so Santa could place it under our tree. To our horror, one rear wheel was missing from the carton. It simply wasn't there. At about 2 a.m. on Christmas morning, this wasn't a good situation. This was in the early 60's, and stores simply didn't stay open all night anytime, let alone on Christmas.
We had bought the trike from FedMart in San Antonio, which was the forerunner of all the "Marts" of today. My husband insisted that I call the store. I did. No answer. Call again, he said. I did, and no answer. Call once more, he insisted. I did, let it ring about twenty times and just before I hung up, a slightly annoyed man answered. It was the night watchman. I explained the situation, and to my astonishment, the man said to have my husband come to the store, to the back door, and bring along the wheel that we had.
He did, the man met him at the back door and let him actually come into the store and match the wheel to the tricycles on display, removed a matching wheel and gave it to him. My triumphant husband returned home with the wheel, and a very happy little boy spent Christmas Day learning to ride his new tricycle. That man at the store took a big risk that night, but the spirit of Christmas prevailed, and left a memory in my heart that has lasted for forty years.

Something I didn't tell everyone on the porch is that Ro reminds me very much of a dear Aunt who passed away 3 years ago. My Aunt Della was a wonderful woman and so is our Ro.

Charlotte, I do like westerns, but mainly western movies(any CLint Eastwood movie comes to mind). As for tv westerns, I guess I like it more MID-western(ala, Little House On The Prairie) and Hallmark is good for that too! You're right though, I shouldn't have left out Hallmark in my praise of those classic show channels. Hallmark has some good shows on. Besides LHOTP, I also watch M*A*S*H on there, digitally mastered and uncut! I love seeing all those scenes that they usually cut out for commercials. I wish Hallmark would put on TAGS uncut. Maybe someday they will.
They used to show ALF on Hallmark, which I also used to love to watch. Not as old and classic as other shows but that furry alien still was funny!

December 09, 2003 - Msg 17517: Romeena, that night watchman sounds as nice as Asa! Neat story.
My story is from the late 60s. I was in a Walgreens just before their 7 pm closing time on Christmas Eve, scrambling for some last minute gifts for my nieces and nephews. (Before I was maried) All of a sudden the manager got up on one of those center display counters and says he is going to start auctioning off all the 'big' toys from the toy aisle! Many toys went for as little as 1 dollar! If that was the only bid he got, it was yours for a dollar. Well, needless to say,
I had quite a catch for my 20 dollars, and ended up giving a lot of them away before I even got home. Everyone there got caught up in the spirit.
It was quite an evening watching that manager lift up those toys and to hear a few bids. There were no problems at all throughout the whole thing. It was quite a deal.
How 'bout a "porch poll" on favorite episodes?

Then I was returning something to Target, something in a very large box, and that was exciting! The box was like a sail, and the wind literally blew me sideways several times. It's also getting quite cold. I'd really be quite content to stay home this evening, but must go out.

Our deacon board at church has a Christmas party every year, for the deacons and their wives, and the widows of deacons who have gone on to be with the Lord are always included. One of the deacons will be picking me up this evening, and I'll attend the party. It will be fun, as I have many friends among the deacons and their wives, and our much-beloved former pastor will be there. It's always a pleasure to get to spend a little time with him. He has meant much to me and my family over the years. So, cold and wind notwithstanding, I guess I'll put on something pretty and go to the party.

As cold as it is, you'd think the wildlife traffic in my back yard would cease, but it hasn't. Slowed a little, perhaps, but still a lot of activity. Today, of all things, a young hawk came in and perched on the birdbath. Sat there for about fifteen minutes, then flew away. Though I was thrilled to see him, I'd just as soon that he wouldn't make those visits a habit, because he's a threat to all my other little friends out there. I've put out extra feed, and a suet cake for those who need it. I had a peanut butter board, with lots of crunchy peanut butter smeared on it, and somebody (squirrel, of course) has made off with the entire board. I can't find it! Two of the three squirrel houses are now occupied, and I saw someone investigating the third one today. As soon as I see signs of gnawing around the entry, I'll know they're planning to move in.

Well, gotta get dressed. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Sold a goat to Tennessee today and we partially deliver it on Saturday - he's meeting us halfway in Ky. Nothing like faraway trading!
Things are busy and many sickly's - don't think it is the flu - just this weather that can't make it's mind up about hot/cold/warm/windy. Who was that always talking about the weather - Calvin Coolidge?

December 09, 2003 - Msg 17525: How's everyone doing?? I've been catching up on all the posts. We missed all the snow here. It all went north. My snapdragons are still blooming. Is that normal?

Homemaker--What the heck is a Mexican wedding cake? I've never heard of it.

Pipeman--How about some good ole'tobacco from Durham, NC? My father-in-law grows tobacco. It's not much money in it anymore. A lot of people have gotten out of it.

Mr. D's Cuz--You got it, "Man In A Hurry"-top episode.

Hey Spot-My dog Bingo is part border collie and the other part black lab (78 lbs-80 lbs)- he lets the cat eat first. Is that normal?

Boo-I could tell you hospital stories all night. But I will just tell you one. One of my patients told me that another nurse brought in sterile cup for a urine speciman and left. About that time breakfast was served. For the heck of it he poured his apple juice in the cup and put the lid back on. The nurse came back and said "my goodness
that sure looks dark". Mr Smith said "well maybe I need to filter it through again" and he took the top off and turned it up-can you imagine her reaction?

For those who did not get your flu shot--we are about to have a shortage.

Hello to Fun Girl, Mayberry Girl, Asa, Briscoe Darling Jr and all the others on the porch.

I need something to spice up this egg nog!!!

December 09, 2003 - Msg 17526: Mercy! It's cold! I'm home from the Deacons' Christmas party, and it was lovely. The guest speaker was Dr. Bill Thorn. If ever, ever you get a chance to hear him, do it! He is absolutely the funniest, most entertaining speaker I've ever heard. He's in his 80's, and his talk just brims with jokes about aging, and he is hilarious. He's much in demand, speaks about 300 times a year, around the country. He has written 23 books, and the latest one is "The Dairy Queen Think Tank." It's gleanings from the conversation of eight elderly men who meet for breakfast every morning at the local Dairy Queen. I have an order in for a copy.

Well, guess I'll go in the house. Too windy out here on this porch, I'm ready for my warm chair, a cup of hot jasmine tea, and a cuddle with a warm Sugarplum who, by the way, says hey! --Romeena

A mexican Wedding Cake or a Russian Tea Cake - same thing - it is a small cookie in the shape of a ball made with crushed nuts and rolled in powder sugar - very easy to make. You can also make them and stick a Hershey kiss on the inside before baking. Talk about something good.

December 10, 2003 - Msg 17530: pipeman>>Talked with all three of the prospects last night. I have narrowed it down to 2. Yes, Alabama is out. I did find out Georgia has 40 acres out in Wyoming and wants to build a house there. That is in the West so there is a new quotient to the equation. Colorado doesn't have the money to help us move out there right now..or even anytime soon. Georgia does. Georgia also gave me a description of the vehicle...it is definitely drivable....lol

For others, wondering what the heck I am talking about. I have 2 marriage proposals and a 3rd that loves me dearly too but isn't ready for the marriage thing.

Romeena, I would love to see your yard. Did you post pictures of it somewhere? That hawk sounds pretty cool too. Of course you know my husband and I are nature lovers, we love the little critters, and the big ones too!

I was thinkin', how's about we do some Christmas Caroling around the porch here. We could make a list of favorite songs, and some favorite refreshments to partake in after we get back from the caroling. My suggestions are "Silent Night" and some nice, steaming hot, hot chocolate!

Romeena, we have a group of men who meet at the local Dairy Queen on Friday mornings for devotional time too! I know I asked this before but no one responded in the affirmative: Does anyone watch At Home Live with Chuck and Jenny?? It's on the Family Net. We get it here on our local Christian station. I just LOVE that show. Today they had a curator-type lady on talking about past White House Christmas cards. George W. Bush is the first president to include a scripture in his Christmas card for the last 3 years! You go, GW! There I said it and I ain't takin' it back!

Just want to take a moment to tell Alan just how much we appreciat all you do for us here on the porch. I haven't had time to post all day and I actually missed everyone. Just felt like I had been cut off from an important part of my life. LOVE YOU ALL!

Now, last night we went to fungi's work party. They had ribeye steaks and all kinds of goodies. There were some fun girls there, but they were the kind of fun girls who share a bottle with Otis and then want to dance. Fungi did kareoke with some friends, but that is as wild as we got.
But one lady, I expected any minute to go up to some man and say "Hello Doll." A good time was had by all. We were home by 9:30. Had to watch Judging Amy.(my one vice) For those of you who watch the show and have for a while, I must say that the combo of Vincent and Carol was an AWFUL idea. I haven't heard of such a mismatch since Andy and Helen. I know she is quirky and kinda odd, but I do love Donna on that show and wish that through some twist of fate, Vincent would return and he and Donna would get together.

December 11, 2003 - Msg 17557: Happy (belated) Birthday Floyd! And for the rest of the porch:Southerner 101

1.) Only a true Southerner knows the difference between a hissie fit and a conniption, and that you don't "HAVE" them, -- you "PITCH" them.
2.) Only a true Southerner knows how many fish, collard greens, potato salad, beans, etc. make up "a mess."
3.) Only a true Southerner can show or point out to you the general direction of "yonder."
4.) Only a true Southerner knows exactly how long "presently" is - as in: "Going to town;...I'll be back presently."
5.) All true Southerners, even babies, know that "Gimme some sugar" is not a request for the white, granular sweet substance that sits in a pretty little bowl on the middle of the table.
6.) All true Southerners know exactly when "by and by" is. They might not use the term, but they know the concept well.
7.) Only a true Southerner knows instinctively that the best gesture of solace for a neighbor who's got trouble is a plate of hot fried chicken and a big bowl of cold potato salad. (If the neighbor's trouble is a real crisis, they also know to add ham biscuits, a mess of greens, and a large banana puddin'!)
8.) Only true Southerners grow up knowing the difference between "right near" and "a right far piece." They also know that "just down the road" is someplace between 1 mile and 20.
9.) Only a true Southerner knows and understands the difference between a redneck, a good ol' boy, hillbilly and po' white trash.
10.) No true Southerner would ever assume that the car with the flashing turn signal is actually going to make a turn.
11.) A true Southerner knows that "fixin'" can be used as a noun, a verb, or an adverb.
12.) Only a true Southerner knows that the term "booger" can be a resident of the nose, a descriptive noun, (as in "that ol' booger,") a first name, or something that jumps out at you in the dark and scares you senseless.
13.) Only true Southerners make friends while standing in lines. We don't do "queues", we do "lines," and when we're "in line," we talk to everybody!
14.) Put 100 true Southerners in a room and half of them will discover they're related, even if only by marriage.
15.) True Southerners know grits come from corn and how to eat them.
16.) Every true Southerner knows tomatoes with eggs, bacon, grits, and coffee are perfectly wonderful; that redeye gravy is also a breakfast food; and that fried green tomatoes are not a breakfast food.
17.) When you hear someone say, "Well, I caught myself lookin' .. ," you know you are in the presence of a genuine Southerner!
18.) Only true Southerners say "sweet tea" and "sweet milk." Sweet tea indicates the need for sugar and lots of it - we do not like our tea unsweetened. "Sweet milk" means you don't want buttermilk.
19.) A true Southerner knows that if you are with a couple of friends, you could be with 2 or ten. The number doesn't matter.
20.) And a true Southerner knows you don't scream obscenities at little old ladies who drive 30 MPH on the freeway. You just say, "Bless her heart" and go your own way.

As told to me by Big Jeff Pruit, "even I know what some of those things mean...now."

Speaking of the county nurses. Wasn't Nurse Mary played by two different actresses?

Ro, I smiled when I read your post about the deacon's Christmas party. Bruce is a deacon and our deacon's party is tomorrow night. Our church is small and we only have four deacons and we will include my friend, Carole who's husband died this year (he was a deacon). I hope she will come, anyway, but it hasn't been very long since she lost her husband. We usually all go out to eat somewhere and then meet at one of the deacon's homes for dessert and we exchange small gifts. This year I bought each couple an ornament while I was in Fredricksburg and baked some cookies to put in pretty Chritmas tins.

Loved the thing about Southern folk. Very true! My Mom is from West Virginia so the cuisine was a bit different (I never had collard greens or fried tomatoes). We had alot of beans and cornbread, though.

Ya'll keep those Christmas stories coming, ya hear?

I have to go tend to the kids. I just heard something spill in the kitchen!! Bye!

December 11, 2003 - Msg 17566: I loved the southern thing. I was born in Georgia and much of the family still lives there. My hubby never had collard greens or grits until he met me. (Lived a deprived life in southern Cali, don't ya know.)

Another Christmas memory. I was probably just out of my teens and I was standing in the kitched talking to my grandma while she made homemade noodles and my cousin's two girls came in and made a wish on the wishbone. They were about 8 and 6. Anyway, the oldest girl got the big end of the wishbone and she told Grandma and me that she had wished her mom and dad would get back together. They were recently divorce. Nearly brought me to tears. I remember wanting my mom and dad to get back together for probably 9 years after they divorced, so I could relate.

Asa, my back has been doing fantastic until I woke up this morning. I guess I must have slept funny or something cause I am right stove up. (for those of you who were not raised in the south, that means stiff and sore--somebody correct me if I am wrong, that's always the way I heard it used) But, this too shall pass.

Our church has a white elephant gift exchange next week. A real riot, I can assure you. No, we don't pass around albino pachederms. If anyone doesn't know what a white elephant gift exchange is, just ask and I will be glad to explain.

Dont the porch seem nice and full. Glad Alan had such an awesome birthday. Hey possum, just got back from my sister's, and got me some neck sugar from little Rosa. No Rosachio this time. Baby neck sugar is the best!
