November 09, 2003 - Msg 16445: Whew! I thought I had been banned from the porch or something! Mercy, what a scare. You don't know how much this porch means until you can't get there. All you folks that got emails from me, asking whether you were able to get there or not, please forgive panicky old me. Allan, Don't you go beatin' yourself up inside or nothing. You can't help it if some nasty old glitch comes along and pounces on our porch. We appreciate all that you do, which is considerable. Probably a lot more than most of us know, unless we're really computer-savvy. Thanks for going to so much trouble for us all the time.

I went on an on. Then I mashed down on the "post your comments" button, and the whole thing went into cyber space, I guess. I thought maybe I'd said too much, and weighed down the porch too much and broke it. See, now I remember the reason I usually don't say too much... I'll come back on later, after I remember what all I said, and post it again.

Now Asa, you were asking for some words of wisdom since your daughter thinks she has found Mr. Right, but won't give the courtship some extra time. Just tell the nice young man that you have a double-barreled shotgun for any man that trifles with your daughters emotions and he'd better be sure he can take care of her. Yeah. That ought to do it.

Thanks also to all of my friend who were so sympathetic and gave such wonderful advice when I was feeling kind of out of it.

Asa, I wonder why kids can't seem to listen to good, sound advice, especially from their Fathers but those "in love hormones" make us do some pretty unwise things sometimes. Hope all goes as it should. My only advice: PRAY HARD.

Well, I am off to San Antonio today to take my parents to the doctor. The sun is shining for the first time in three days and it is warming up (BOOOOO). Ya'll have a great day.

November 10, 2003 - Msg 16482: Hey Asa, I tell you what to do. Have your daughter go over to her intended's house with a snow cone. Have her bite the end off and suck out all the syrup, then hand it to him. How he reacts will tell you alot about his charecter. Someone who can be kind after that must be an okay person. Just to be absolutely sure, have her slather VICKS behind her ears good. Any man who would love her in those conditions can't be all bad.

I am not the person to ask about those short courtships. I only knew fungi for about six months before I married him. And in May we will have been married for 15 years.(and I have no plans of quitting him now) Of course I was in perilous danger of being an old maid. Asa, about your daughter - I might not be a good one to be offering advice. I was all of 17 when I met my beloveded, we dated five months, then got engaged, and got married three months later. I knew the moment I set eyes on him that he was the one. I know that's dangerous thinking, but it worked out for us. We had 38 wonderful years together. We scrapped and fought, and made up, and lived and laughed and loved, and raised our four kids, and worked together and played together and prayed together (the key, I think) and I'd do it all again in a heartbeat. I hope your daughter will be able to say the same thing in about 40 years. My head tells me that it's better for them to wait a while, but people told us that, too, and we didn't do it, and it worked out fine. Sometimes we get lucky, I guess.

Whoohoo, Mary Wiggins! Boy, does that cornbread sound good! I love the stuff, and kinda hate to make it for just one. Guess I could give the birds and squirrels some of it. Hmmm, I think that's just what I'll do. I even have a little buttermilk to go along with it, I think. (For me, not the critters.) Now there's a combination that'll twang your buds.

Have a great evening, folks. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

November 10, 2003 - Msg 16500: By the way, that's me above Msg 16494 --- Clara! Sorry about being gone...*all these many months*! So many things have needed tending around home. My older daughter (pregnant with her fourth, remember?) is having a tough time and having a severely autistic five year old and a clingy 1 year old is wearing her out I think. Poor thing said the other day that she was feeling "on the edge".. boy, if that don't make a mother worry! On top of that, my younger daughter fell back in with a new batch of 'evil companions' just when we thought she had turned her life around so well. Please pray for both of them if you could and for me as well.... Another thing that has come along (when it rains, it pours) is that a pelvic mass was found last week during a sonogram. I don't know if you remember this, but two years ago I had a total hysterectomy that had to be done abdominally. So the doctor was able to see that nothing was there (tumors, etc.); everything was "clean". An exray four weeks later done for a kidney stone showed a mass where the cervix would have been which my doctor thought it was a bloodclot because it appeared so quickly. I have never had any symptoms of any kind but the life insurance company wanted a sonogram last week and to my surprise the mass is still there. Now I am worried. I see my doctor Friday.

Hope everyone is well. I don't have time to go through the archives but, hello to new Porchsters and hugs to you Oldies!

Ro, they say there is no such thing as love at first sight but I know I had "something" at first sight of my husband. I was 27 when I first saw him, so I had dated for awhile and had other boyfriends but when I met Bruce it was very different. I have loved him since day one. We dated for a long time (four years) because we were both very independant but when it was time to start having children we finally tied the knot. I have never regretted it. I hope and pray that Asa's daughter has found the right man for her and if he's not, that he would move along.

I sure got a kick out of TAGS tonight. That Barney is so funny when he starts talking to Juanita. Peggy was so sweet. After the show was over my husband said, "You mean Andy gave up Peggy for that Helen Crump? What was wrong with him? Peggy was pretty, sweet, and rich.". Sometimes we get so "into" the show that we forget that its not real!

Well, I am tired out from my trip to San Antonio. Seems like the traffic was just horrendous. I think I will turn in soon. Have a great day tomorrow, friends!

November 11, 2003 - Msg 16516: Morning Porch,
Happy Veterans' Day! My father was a veteran from World War II and the Korean War, my grandfather from World War I, and I know at least one of my great great grandfathers fought in the Civil War, (why is it called the "civil" war, I don't think there was too much civil about it?). A word of prayer for all the veterans-to-be in Iraq and Afghanistan, and whereever else our military people may find themselves...May Our Father in Heaven watch over every soldier, give them courage to face the day, wisdom to help keep them safe, patience for the situation they are in, and help all the folks back home to remember them and appreciate them while they are in harm's way, and especially when they come back home and will need the support of their people and families, in Jesus' name, Amen.

Oh, by the way, I am a 46 year old female, I live in Warren, Michigan, with my 21 year old daughter, 20 year old son, 6 year old son, and artist husband whom I have been married to for 13 lucky years! And...my name is...can you guess it?...Mary! Not too original here! (But my last name has been changed to protect the innocent!) Oh, and one more thing, I really don't like cooking! But, I have gotten better at it in recent years. My husband used to tease me and say he knew dinner was ready when either the smoke alarm started going off, or the pizza delivery man showed up on the porch! (The pity is, that is so close to the truth it is painful!)

Well, I guess that is enough book-writing for now! Prayers for all who need them, may God watch over every porch sitter and their family and friends today.

November 11, 2003 - Msg 16527: Welcome, County Nurse. I'm a nurse, too, and so is Boo. I'm still working at a hospital, and Boo has left nursing to raise her family. (The nerve!) We're both in Texas - she lives down along the coast, and I'm in the Dallas area.

Congratulations, Warren. 39 years is impressive. My dear husband and I had 38 years behind us and were looking forward to many more when the Lord called him home very suddenly, at the age of 58. Took me a while to get past that, but with the loving support of my family and friends, and these precious people here on this porch, life is pleasant again. I'll always have a large empty space that follows me around, but I've come to terms with that. Sometimes I talk to him, and in my heart, he answers.

Well, gotta go put out critter food. A squirrel has come up on my windowsill and peered inside, no doubt wondering why I haven't fed them. They are just so cute. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

November 11, 2003 - Msg 16531: Poor Spot...I wish someone would throw a tomato at him, he ain't hat lunch yet. God Bless all our veterans. Grandpa Harvey, who passed away in July, was a veteran of World War II, (the big one) and my mother's father and several great uncles fought in that war too. My step father was just a little sprout when Grandpa Harvey came back from Okinawa.(sp) He was not used to sharing Grandma's attention. So, he told Grandpa, "You go back to Okie-knock-knock." A story Grandpa repeated whenever the opportunity presented itself.

A great-great grandfather was in the UN-civil war and was in Cahawba Prison Camp in Alabama. When he was released he boarded the Sultana (steamboat) and was headed up the Mississippi toward his Indiana home. The Sultana sank and many men died. But Grandpa Ashley made it to shore. This is well documented and quite a interesting story. Of course it is more interesting to me, as a family member lived through it.

Ro, you mentioned buttermilk and cornbread. My great Uncle Fred loved to eat that concotion. I have many warm memories of him and buttermilk and cornbread never fails to evoke them. He was also a veteran and was wounded in the war. I am not sure of the details, but he hds a small hole in his leg for the rest of his life. I can remember when I was small watching him pour peroxide into the hole. Now the thought makes me queasy, but we were mesmerized by it then.

Well enough of my epic tales. I think this chapter is done.

I want to thank you all for your thoughts and prayers and advice concerning my Daughter. You all mean so much to me. We have all had a good long talk and I have told them both how strongly I feel about them giving it some more time, so they say they are gonna pray about it and talk it over. I guess I will go with whatever they decide upon, with a smile on my face.
Hey Charlotte, my Daughter announced she is going to Marry this fellow she met at college in January and I just think they are not taking enough time to get to know each other. She is a very good kid, and her fiance seems to be a very good young man. Both are devout in their Christian beliefs which pleases me. Maybe I just worry to much but dag blame it, this is my little sweetheart and she deserves the best, my job is to see to it that she gets the best! LOL
Anyway thank you all for the comments. You are all wonderful friends and I love you all! I think I'll try the snowcone idea Fun Girl. That one made me LOL.
Welcome to all our new sitters. Hope you like it here. Can't think of a better group of people. And so good to see you again Clara. So sorry about your problems. Prayers to all who need them.

Anyway, I hope everything works out well for you and yours. I seem to remember a couple years ago, when your other daughter got married, you near 'bout went off the deep end of the porch then, too. Just try not to worry.

November 11, 2003 - Msg 16556: "Hey" to the new folks! Glad to have ya'll.

Thanks to Warren form the warm wishes. You are a kind gentleman.

I enjoyed the reunion special but should have turned of the phone. Seems like everbody I knew called during that hour (I think it was a conspiracy. They KNEW I love TAGS!). Anyway, I thought they chose some of my favorite funny clips, that's for sure. Hubby and I laughed out loud several times. I, too, thought it was bitter-sweet seeing the characters who have gone on and how Andy and Barney have aged and when they talked about how they wish they could go back and do it again, I thought that was sad, somehow. TAGS is the best and Mayberry lives on!

Just think; if not for TAGS we wouldn't all be such good friends.

Good night, buddies!

November 11, 2003 - Msg 16557: I watched the reunion special tonight and really enjoyed it. I do watch The Andy Griffith Show every chance I get. To me it is the best show that was ever on television. It is really sad to think of all the people on the show that are no longer with us. I sure miss them all. I know one day that Andy Griffith and Don Knotts will no longer be with us, and I dread that day because I no my tears will fall. But, Andy and Barney will live on forever. It was a simple time when life was at a slower pace. I miss those times myself. In 1960 when the show first aired I was 13 and turned 14 that November. Life for me was simple and I sure miss those times. Remember that family and friends are like leaves that fall from the trees, if you don't hold them close they will be scattered by the wind.

Hey Warren, do you know where Berrien Springs MI is? Berrien Springs is not far from St. Joe. Grand Haven Michigan and is a pretty place too.

I thought it was interesting to see how the Dillards looked on the special tonight. It was a wonderful hour. I even cried during some of the show. I too have had the thought that some day Andy and Don and even Jim Neibors (sp) will be gone. I am so grateful that we have this wonderful show preserved so that we shall meet but we shall miss him, there will be an empty chair.

November 11, 2003 - Msg 16570: Howdy to all you newcomers who have dropped by to comment about the TV special. You're welcome here, just find yourself a name, pull up a rocker and set a spell! This is an expandable porch, there's always room for one more chair, if the occupant of that chair is a TAGS fan.

I, too, was thinking about how our TAGS stars have aged, and then the realization hit me. If the TV screen was two-way, they might have been looking out at me and thinking the same thing! I was in my twenties when TAGS was being produced, and I'm just a bit past that now. Doesn't seem possible.

real nice ta see y'all, old friends an' new ones.
~~~love, Leon.
November 12, 2003 - Msg 16579: oh, and... hey, y'know how ya always think of something ya shoulda said some time after ya said what ya did, but then it's too late an' ya can't..?
las' Spring we found a baby bird out in our flower garden what had got blown outta his family's nest. first we set him in the sun so's he'd dry out some an' mebbe his parents would see him an' come care for him-- sure don't know how we 'spected 'em to carry him home! anyways, he did attract th' attention of some big blackbirds who pecked at him an' woulda flown off with him if my darling person hadn't interfered.
so we took the poor li'l thang in, set up a small bird cage for him with the remnants of his wind-blowed nest in there, an' force-fed him till he ate nice from our fingers. my beloveded was certain he was a starling-- we named him Ringo an' joined a web board thing (www.starlingtalk.com), an' learned all we could about raising baby starlings. so of course once his baby fuzz was replaced by adolecent feathers with some more distinguishable markings, we found that he's really a sparrow.
in the course of our researchin' we found that we had fed him all the wrong stuff from the start, an' about bonding an' identifyin' with us an' all like that. also that it's illegal in our state to even rescue baby wild birds, much less full-on adopt 'em.
well, by th' time Ringo was flyin' real good, feedin' hisself an' customizin' his house with twigs an' paper an' stuff, he was way too bonded with his human "parents" to be safely turned loose outside-- now it's both heartwarmin' an' heartbreakin' ta see him hoppin' along our front windersill chatterin' away with th' other sparrows on th' other side of th' glass, but we sure ain't tossin' him out at the beginnin' of a cold Winter. mebbe nex' Spring, so he'd have all Summer ta make friends an' learn how to be a regular outdoor bird.
but for now, so long as it lasts, we're enjoyin' his company as part of our family (which includes a 4 lb. Chihuahua, a 17 yr. old parakeet, two frogs, two lizards an' a Quaker parrot we recently adopted).
love, Opie the Birdman's li'l bruther, Leon
