Fun girl, we sure do know who Howard Terpning is. He is one of my husband's all-time favorite artists! That man can get hundred's of thousands of dollars for an original painting. (Don't you wish you bought one when he was just beginning?!) We also went to see his work in Indiana! It would be funny if we were there on the same day! I am ending every sentence with an exclamation point! I am beginning to think I sound like Barney! LOL
But truthfully, we are great fans of Mr. Terpning. His work would be worth anyone taking a look at. As far as your damaged print, the best advice I can give is to take it to a dependable framer and ask their advice. I believe there are ways to mitigate the damage to the piece.

Bulbsnatcher, nice to hear from you! I hope your mother gets well soon, and she and your family will be in our prayers. Congratulations on the smoking cessation!! Good for you!

Boo, you would absolutely not believe how much time I spend either looking at art, or looking for animals or scenes for my husband to depict! And, my husband has been known to bring home small dead animals he has found that he plans to use for "reference"! I hate when he does that! The funniest thing about him, he is extremely allergic to animals, yet his career brings him out into fields, and into taxidermist's shops and in close proximity to live or dead "reference"!

Well, I have stuffed peppers on the stove, and I better tend to them or they just may "explode"!

October 01, 2003 - Msg 15883: Wow, how nice to see all my old friends on the porch today. I have really been missing some of you. Bulb, I think of you from time to time and wondered if you were smoking. So glad to hear you are smoke-free! I am sorry for what your mom is going through, though. My mom had a stroke 4 years ago this December and I remember having to grieve the loss of the "old mom" before the stroke. My mom never regained what she lost from the stroke but she hasn't lost alot of ground these last four years, either, which is good. Some days she almost seems like her old self then it's gone again. If your mom just had her stroke two weeks ago she might regain alot of what she seems to have lost. I will pray for her (and you).

Thanks for trying to spare my feelings, Salty. Actually we have had really nice weather here for about a week. Its in the 80's during the day and 60's at night with lower humidity than usual so we just love it. The only problem is that we have had alot of rain and the mosqitoes are trying to carry us off! I found a new Off (repellant) that smells good and we have been using alot of it when we are outside.

Asa, I could never believe you caused that black out (you are such a ray of sunshine)!

Homemaker, I looked at your web site again and saw your picture of Casey. He is so cute! I think he looks alot like little Opie, don't you? The goats are beautiful, too, and I loved the rainbow.

Ro, I have been on Penicillin for the Strep B I was telling you about for 8 days and I felt like the symptoms were going away until Sunday and they started again! I am wondering if I should finish up the prescription on just call the dr for something different. I am really dissapointed that its not working. Oh well, I am praying for God to help me get rid of this thing however is best.

Possum, it cooled off here alittle and my sister decided to make stew yesterday. Well, she never could get it right because she added too much water to it. I said, "This is supposed to be stew? It's not stew, it's soup," to which her husband replied, "It's Susan's famous stoup.". I laughed alot at that one (it's always fun to laugh at your sister-some things never change--told you I could be a hellion).

October 01, 2003 - Msg 15890: Possum, several years ago my parents had a squirrel in their yard that was very tame and would always run out to greet them. Well one day when my dad was leaving the house that squirrel took a flying leap from the roof and landed on his head. It dug its claws in to keep from falling off and dad got some pretty good scratches in his scalp! Boy, I really laughed at that one.

October 01, 2003 - Msg 15891: Those squirrels can be a sight, that's for sure. There are several that visit my yard every day (maybe because I put out food for them?) and I really enjoy them. One is getting very bold, and I think in time I could hand-feed him. I know they're destructive little nuisances, but I love 'em anyway. A neighbor is always fussing about them, says they get in his attic and he's afraid they're going to chew wires. While he's griping, I'm thinking, "Of course they will, but fix the hole in your roof, you ninny!" A big piece of the soffit in his eaves is hanging down, looks terrible, and he won't fix it. Some people! Humph!

Boo, I know what you mean about the mosquitoes. They're vicious. And huge! It's not their bite that hurts so much, it's the landing and takeoff! I just despise the miserable things, and I've got a bat house, and martin houses and all those good things. Not one bat, not one martin! Sometimes I'd like to see a bat! I'm going to considerable expense to eliminate standing water on my property, and still I have mosquitoes. I think they're coming from next door. I read somewhere that while it's true that God doesn't make mistakes, with mosquitoes, He came close! I think even the Lord himself would laugh at that one. He does have a sense of humor, you know. Think not? Did you ever look at a camel? Or an ostrich? (heehee)

Well, gotta run. Have to go by two different banks today, so the Plum will be a happy camper. She gets a cookie at the drive-through of each one. The tellers all know her by name, and talk to her over the intercom. She loves it!

Thanks for asking about me up there, Boo! Sorry I haven't been here visiting lately, but I have been trying to get some things done. That, and my wife's been getting on my case, implying that I am on the computer all day, which I am not, but if she tries to call when I happen to be on here, she gets mad and thinks I'm having an on-line love affair. So, I know what you mean about not liking weekends with an argumentative spouse, Charlotte Tucker, as I don't like them too much myself. My wife seems to like to argue and be confrontational, whereas I don't much see a need to blow things up out of proportion.
So, I've just been trying to avoid some aggravation.
Speaking of mosquitoes(another form of aggravation, but one I can handle. Hey, you can't swat your spouse!;)), we haven't really had a big problem with them this summer, which is kind of odd considering I live where the mosquito is the state bird. I don't know which I dislike more; mosquitoes or ticks. I guess mosquitoes are more annoying because they can fly around and get at you easier, but ticks are just creepy. And that's just what they do, too. They creep up on you. EEWWW!
Good thing they sweep this porch.

October 01, 2003 - Msg 15893: Ellen Brown, we live in Alabama, a little over 500 miles from Mt. Airy. Emma lives a couple of hours or so from there, the best I can remember. We take pictures every year and post them at our chapter's website, the Mayberry Giants: "Hit One for the Ol' Goober" chapter. It will be a few days before I get this year's posted will do it the first chance I get and will post here when it's done. You can go there now and see pics from the last 7 or so Mayberry Days and some other Mayberry events too.

October 01, 2003 - Msg 15894: Hello dolls.....Yep it's me! I just have to say to Ro, You my dear, are a TRIP! I can just see the Plumster "talking" to the bank tellers. LOL We used to feed Lucky those doggie ice creams. His little nose would get so cold that he would eat some, then rub his nose on his little pillow, then eat some more then rub his nose. I wish we had video taped it. I would send that in to Animal Planet if we had. When I lived with my parents, we had a racoon that would climb up on my brothers back for Cheetos. That was the biggest mama racoon I have ever seen. Wonder what causes that? (Cheetos maybe?)

Howard Terpning is wonderful. I am not much into art, but his work twangs my buds. We went to the Indian Market at the Eiteljorg Museum one year and there were some absolutely GORGEOUS paintings. One I loved was $15,000. I can not imagine paying that for art, but it was so pretty it made me hurt. You know that funny little ache you get around your heart when you see something really beautiful? Other than when looking at that painting, I haven't felt that feeling since Kyle was a baby. Mary, if you and hubby like Terpning, I know you are good people. Boo, I highly reccommend him. Pretty awesome. The print I have is probably really a poster of a picture or whatever. I paid thirty dollars for it so it would probably be cheaper to just go and buy another one.

Lovely autumn day today. the high was 62 and the low will be in the 30's. Nice during the day and good sleeping weather at night. Ya'll have got me craving everything but the kitchen sink. I think I will go make a big pot of chili with spaghetti noodles in it, or maybe macaroni. Some folks don't like pasta in their chili, but I can eat pasta just about any way I can get it.

Gotta run as my laundry multiplies every time I turn my head. HELP!

October 01, 2003 - Msg 15898: Charlotte Tucker, the magazines arrived today. Thank you so much! The folks did a great job with the drawing of the Plum, both pictures look just like her. I can hardly wait to show my family that we've been "published"!

My lovely little fountain is, at this moment, lying all over the yard in its various components. There seemed to be a leak, as the ground was sodden around it all the time, so my landscaper friend has dismantled it. That meant moving four huge boulders, each about the size of four cinderblocks stacked two on two. We couldn't find a leak, so finally concluded that one side was collapsing a bit from the weight. We got a second liner, and will put one inside the other for added strength, and will rebuild the whole thing tomorrow. It should be running again by tomorrow night.

Boo, this is for you. Have you tried garlic? They say it is a powerful antibiotic and they say it was used in Bible times for it's healing qualities. I always take it when I start feeling sick and it hasn't let me down yet. Wish it worked on backaches. LOL I would suggest that you take it along with whatever the doctor reccommends

I start physical therapy tomorrow. Hopefully I will be good as new soon. I started out making a pot of chili and kept adding stuff to it and ended up with three pots. We are having nachos with it tomorrow.

My sister is coming over with some cheesecake from Sam's Club. Has anyone tried the kind that has four different varieties in one box? I will be getting some neck sugar too folks. Baby Rosa will be here in about half an hour. She is two months old and just about scrumptious.

October 02, 2003 - Msg 15901: I looked up Howard Terpning, fungirl. Thanks for the suggestion but I don't really care for that kind of painting. I'm not into Native American art, I'm afraid. I don't do the South Western thing. I don't really like Thomas Kinkiad (I sound like Lydia Crosswaith) but that style of painting is more to my liking (old houses with warm lights glowing, old red barns in country fields, etc.). Guess I'm boring. I just had a print matted and framed for my hubby for our anniversary and it is a cabin at twighlight on a river and there are golden and red Aspen trees and a mist hanging over the water and the mountains. There is a warm glow of light radiating from the little cabin. It is really nice. I like the warm/cozy thing. Having said that, I'm going to go put on my shorts and sandals and do some laundry. I'm still trying to catch up since "the man" fixed my washing machine. My car wouldn't start yesterday but luckily it was something my husband could fix (I really hate to call the man twice in one week!).

Ooooo, I'm jealous of that neck sugar, fg! Thanks for the tip about garlic, I'll try it. I'm about ready to try anything.

October 02, 2003 - Msg 15906: Howdy, friends. Asa, I'd be happy to make it a party to put up my Christmas lights. Maybe about the middle or toward the end of November? We'll have to dodge around Thanksgiving, but we can do that. Things ought to be real pretty-like out there this year, what with the new landscaping and all. Get some Christmas lights going with all the new stuff, and it'll be just beeyootiful.

New Visitor, we may take a little getting used to, but mostly we're harmless. If you want to know a little more about us, just mash that button down there at the bottom of your screen, the one that says "Archives" and you can tune in to the conversations of the past, and get a better idea of what this porch is all about. Mostly, it's just folks who enjoy talking about TAGS, and sharing and caring for each other. It's just Mayberry - our home town.

Friends, I received a lovely little blessing this afternoon. My new island flowerbed is official. It has been blessed by several lovely Monarch butterflies, on their way to Mexico. I got a couple of pictures of one as he snacked on a big bloom on a butterfly bush. I declare, all we've gone through up to now to get this thing done was worth it, to see that beautiful creature settle on that blossom and drink its fill. Also, a mama squirrel brought two half-grown juveniles into the yard this morning, and carried out a raid on a bird feeder. I never saw such antics, just about ten feet out from my big window. They were hilarious, and such acrobats. I love 'em!

Well, gotta clean this house up a bit. My daughter is coming into town tomorrow for a couple of days, and things are a bit neglected. Been out in the yard too much. Reckon I could get Clara Edwards to come over and help me? Naw, she'd tell everybody how dusty my house is.

Ro, I just adore squirrels. I remember as a child when I would visit my grandparents in Michigan, my Grandpa had a screened-in patio on the front of his house and every morning this squirrel would come to the front door, stand on the stoop and knock on the glass door. Grandpa would open the door and hand him a peanut butter sandwich. The squirrel would take the sandwich and be on his way. It was the cutest thing! My Grandpa was neat to do that, I thought. My dad on the other hand is always trying to keep the squirrels out of his yard and off of the bird feeder. He has tried all kinds of inventions to keep them off, like hanging the feeder way out on a tiny limb and greasing the wire it was hanging from. Nothing worked so he just gave up. You got to love those squirrels because they are so smart.

Homemaker, hope all goes well with your sweet boy. Lord watch over him.

We stayed in the old Andy Griffith home place one night and had chili and cornbread whilst we watched "The Andy Griffith Show" together. We had a little picnic in the Visitor's Center garden...in their lovely gazebo...Snappy Lunch pork chop sandwiches. Mmmmm...good. And our own private concert by LeRoy McNees - what a prince of a fella HE is. Yes, Jennie & MPO, it was a fun time all the way around.

October 03, 2003 - Msg 15917: Mt.Airy is nice! Manicurist and I want to move there. It was the site of our first date. I'm glad people are realizing it finally. There's a lot of cool things to see, and a lot of cool places to go. Take a ride up Pilot Mountain! Thats incredible. You've never seen anything like the view from that park before.
Also, no trip to Mt.Airy is complete without a haircut at Floyd's, owned and operated by Mr.Russell Hiatt. Go in and meet him. Whatever you do, Meet Mr.Russell. He is the nicest person you will ever meet in your lifetime.
Snappy Lunch is great, but the Bluebird diner is also good, and Leons down the street from the Snappy has the best burger I've ever eaten.
After you've eaten, take a nice leisurely walk down Main St.down to Wally's, or just walk around town.

I also agree with Jimmy the Goat about Russell Hiatt. He has to be the sweetest gentleman in Mount Airy. And "Rabbit" is definitely another nice man there. Mount Airy wouldn't be the same without them. Asa (and anybody else who hasn't been), you should try to go there someday..you'd love it...LOVE it!

I really enjoyed the epilogue of "Quiet Sam" (not sure if that was the name of the episode) this morning where they gave the baby a shower and sang to Sam and Lilly -that was so sweet. And my favorite line in the show where Barney says to Ange about dissecting the grasshopper in class..."..you FROZE!!" That just kills me.

Jimmy the G, was that the episode where Ben tries to foreclose on the Scobees? I think that one is so sweet. I just love it when Andy takes Ben to the Scobees and after being so mean to them (all an act, of course), he winks at Mrs. Scobee to let her know he is trying to trick old Ben (who won't die but will just "nasty" away, as Andy put it). Such a neat episode showing what it means to be a real neighbor.

I don't remember the "Quiet Sam" episode. Would someone be so kind as to refresh my memory, please? Thank you.

My husband's been busying himself with getting an old mini bike of my dad's fixed up for the kids to ride. They got to ride it today and for the first time in ages we had a good weekend. In all honesty, there have been times when I was in Colorado in the winter and I got so cold I thought I would die (and it wasn't that cold in colorado-just about 10 degrees). I don't know if I could tolerate a real winter. The heat here in the summer can be really terrible and you feel like you are in hibernation because it is too hot to be outside during the day. It doesn't cool off at night much, either because of the high humidity. I guess it is just hard to actually end up living in the perfect climate year round.

I was thinking about all of you because I have a little cold and am about to smear some VICKS on my neck.

They are really bad in the fall and again in the spring. And it is always during the last hurrah of fall and the first hurrah of spring.

October 08, 2003 - Msg 15979: Well, my stars! Here I've lived 64 years, and I never knew that ladybugs stink. I've always thought they were the cutest little things, and I know they're very beneficial in the garden. You can buy them by the pint in the garden centers around here, to release in your yard. They eat aphids by the zillions. A couple of years ago, believe it or not, a colony of them invaded one of our hospital rooms, on the second floor yet. The patient called out that there were bugs all over, and I headed for her room thinking she had received a bit too much pain medication. When I entered the room, there they were, little red and black ladybugs everywhere. All over the floor, the walls, the furniture, even her bed. We moved the patient to another room, and I spent about an hour sweeping up ladybugs into piles and scooping them onto sheets of paper and dumping them into plastic bags. Released most of them outside the hospital, but I confess I "stole" a couple of bags and brought them home to my flowerbeds. Didn't notice any stink, though.

Boo, dear, you keep that Vicks going until you're well. I declare, you and those kiddoes have more respiratory ailments than anyone I ever heard of. Maybe you should just grease the kids with Vicks every day, sick or not. That way any germs they encounter will stick in the Vicks and won't make it into their noses and throats. (teehee)
