Hey to Sp00ky too! Nice to see you.
Fun girl, we have the same idea when it comes to skinny clothes. There is always hope if you keep them! LOL. I try to get rid of a few items each season change and I am integrating my real clothes in and the clothes from 5 years ago (that don't fit anymore but used to look so good) out.

Wow, Mavis! When you said "Johnson City" my ears just perked right up, then I realized you weren't talking about Johnson City, Texas. Sure do wish you were, 'cause then I'd get to come and hear you sing. JC, Texas is just north of San Antonio, and is where one of my daughters teaches in the high school. She lives in Fredericksburg, but teaches over in Johnson City. Nice little country town.
I've got a pile of clothes nearly two feet high on my dining room table, waiting for me to carry them to a women's shelter. They're my "fat clothes", and I hope I never, ever, ever again will be able to wear them. That's why I'm getting them out of here. I don't want anything available that I could ease into if I started to gain back what I've lost. Some have never been worn, a few even still have their price tags. I bought them just before the weight started to come off, and never wore them. Still, I'm very happy to be getting rid of them. I'm still carrying about fifteen pounds I'd like to lose, and will, but with nearly fifty gone, I'm a happy little camper right now. I never thought I'd be able to say that. God just helped me, that's all.
Well, the Plum has been tugging on my shirt. She probably wants a carrot, or her water bottle may be empty. Either way, guess I'd better go take care of her, before she gets impatient and tugs too hard. I have several shirts with little mended spots on the hem! Ignoring her just doesn't work around here. Rotten kid.

Well, since my last baby was born I have to lose weight to wear my "fat clothes". Ain't that depressing? I am finding that every year older that I get it seems harder to lose weight. How did you do it, Ro (I want God to help me and I have prayed but still am having a terrible time)?
Ro, I have been to Johnson City (TX) quite a few times. My husband used to have relatives there and he had an uncle who worked on the Baird Ranch (Baird's bread). We would have family reunions there on the ranch. It was fun but SHORE was hot!!
What happened to the black and white eps of TAGS? They keep showing the color ones over and over on TVLand!

Hey, everybody! It's hot here--it's not even 92, it's 93! Now that's hot for up here.
We're workin' on moving into our new house; so far, just about all we have is a bed and a Bible, and a shovel and a rake. Oh, and air conditioning. Orville's working on the front porch right now, and by that I mean he's building us one. Then we can sit on the wicker sofa (that we found Thursday, it was made in 1950 and is just exactly like the one on the show) and count cars and discuss buying septic tanks for our Orville's parents' anniversary. He's a good son. He tries.
We have a new addition to our little family--we bought us a new puppy for our 2nd anniversary. (Can't believe it's been two years already!) She's a miniature Schnauzer that we named "Ellie Walker of Mayberry." We just call her Ellie, though. The lady we got her from said we can pick out the registered name, just so long as it isn't already taken. I don't think that one has been taken, do you? When she's good she's Ellie. When she's piddling on the carpet (which is a lot these days), she's ELLIEWALKERSHAMEONYOU.

Boo, my weight loss started in March of 2002, right after I had my gallbladder out. I didn't feel bad, but didn't have an appet1ite. Felt fine, just not hungry, so I didn't eat much. Before I knew it, fifteen pounds were gone and I could tell it in my clothes. Activity was a little bit easier, too, and I liked the feeling. So as my appet1te returned, I just watched it a bit, no seconds (and no cheating by taking large "firsts"), and of course no sweets since my diabetes was fairly recently diagnosed as well. Over the next few months, the weight just kept coming off, and it was such a wonderful feeling that I was able to continue to cooperate. I finally hit a plateau at about fifty pounds gone, and I feel wonderful. As I said, I'd like to drop about fifteen more, but that's not coming off so easily. It will come off, though, I'm determined. Thus, I'm giving away those clothes.
Well, guess I'd better go feed the Plum. She has walked by several times, and her messsage is clear. "You've been sitting there long enough, now come make yourself useful." You all have a lovely evening, and a blessed Sabbath tomorrow. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Evenin', all! I just got a phone call telling me I could stay home from work if'n I wanted to - lots of patients went home today. If I want to?? Does a goose go barefooted? Of course I want to! I spent the afternoon vacuuming this formerly dirty house, and bathing the formerly dirty Plum. The house is now clean, and the Plum is gorgeous, smells of Raspberry Conditioner. Do I want to sit in my clean house and cuddle my clean furkid? You bet!!
Possum, I know what you mean about Howard's character being a bit over the top, but I think that was intentional. Let's face it, Howard's a nice guy, but he's a dork. A nerd. A social klutz. He tries, and he'd give you his last cent if you were hungry, but he's a nerd. The way he treated Millie on the train was classic "old bachelor". Those goofy lines about dancing to her tune already and such, and then making such a big deal over that mustache. By the way, have you ever seen him without that mustache? He looks ridiculous. Reminds me of my Uncle Chuck.
Uncle Chuck was a big, handsome man, had Clark Gable-type good looks. He wore a mustache from the earliest days of my memory. He and my aunt lived with my family in the country, in a lovely little guesthouse. They were there to look after things, cook and help keep the yard, and care for my brother and me when my parents were away. The business my folks were in often took them away for short periods. Anyway, one morning at breakfast, my uncle walked into the kitchen, and had no mustache. He had shaved it off. I thought my aunt was going to throw the sugarbowl at him. She had a conniption fit, and told him he looked just like a great big monkey. He did. His upper lip looked like it was two inches long! Needless to say, he left, had breakfast in town, returned late that evening and retreated to their house, and when he appeared at breakfast the next morning, he had a stubble on his lip, augmented by my aunt's eyebrow pencil! Honest, it's true. The mustache grew back in, he was his handsome old self, and all was well. Some men just need that thing, I guess, and he was one of them.
I think Mayberry folks are no different than "real" folks everywhere. Some are not too bright, some are socially inept, some are downright annoying. Take Warren, for example. (Please.) I know a nurse who is just like him. Drives me nuts! She means well, though, and she's a good nurse. I guess folks are just folks, warts and all.

Ro, I have an Uncle Chuck too. Come to think of it, mine looked much better with a moustache too. My hubby is one of the "I have no top lip" variety and right after we started dating he shaved his moustache. We went to see a friend the next day and when he looked at fungi he said, "Grow it back." Not even hello or anything.
So he proceeded to grow it back and has never been without in the 14 years since. I have begged and pleaded for him to grow a beard. He looks so good with facial hair, but he will not hear of it.
My mother always says, "Nerds make the best husbands." She should know. She has been married three times. She finally got a nerd the last time and it has lasted longer than the other two put together. LOL

I think I might be married to a nerd. He is a Baptist deacon, never drinks, smokes, parties or looks at girlie magazines, has a really corny sense of humor and has been known to wear dress socks and loafers with a pair of shorts, occassionally. I used to date guys who were less square but when it came to getting married, it was square I wanted and I have had no regrets. In fact, it was my square husband who turned me on to TAGS. I remember one afternoon he wanted to watch it and I said, "Gross. That's a boring show.". He said, "Just watch it for a minute, it's a great show.". All it took was one episode and I was hooked. So, my husband has given me some really wonderful blessings, especially my sweet babies. God bless nerds and the women who love them!
Ro, I laughed out loud a couple of times at your post. The Uncle Chuck story was great. I also loved what you said about Warren and it's true, we all know someone like Warren.

Hi all. Haven't been here for awhile so I thought I'd see what was happening.
Since we are on the subject of facial hair..., I hate mine! I've been shaving since I was a teenager, and if I don't want to look like a bum, I have to shave every day. I know some people who can go weeks and months without shaving before they start showing any stubble, lucky dogs! And some of them actually want a beard. I never liked the way a beard looks on me, yet I could probably have a pretty full one in a couple weeks if I didn't shave. You think that's a joke that God is playing on me? Because I absolutely hate beards on me, but I also hate shaving.:)
Some people look good with them though and it suits them. Can you imagine Floyd without that little mustache of his? I can't either! It fits him! Or on the other hand have you ever seen that episode of Gilligan's Island where Gilligan's and the Skipper's hair temporarily falls out and at the end of the show they both grow beards? Beards just don't fit them! Kind of like me.
Well, that's enough of this "hair"-raising talk for now. I think I'll go get a jug O'squeezins; a little "hair" of the dog that bit me, and curl up with a good story; The Tortoise and The "Hair".
Time flies when you're having pun.

I just came to talk about a tropical storm. A tropical storm named Kai(my daughter).
I just cleaned up her toy room(aptly named because that is where we keep most of her toys), and you would not believe how fast a 2-1/2 year old can turn a clean room into a disaster area. I just looked in there, now that the storm has dissipated(she's taking a nap, finally), and it looks the same as before I cleaned it up. What causes that?
I'm sure Boo, at least, knows what I am talking about!

She probably poured it down the sink but I never knew for sure. She wasn't even out of my sight when that happened (she is very quick in her mischief). They sure can be trials can't they? But, God love them, life would sure be sad without their adorable little ways. A little 2 year old I watch at church on Wednesdays nearly drowned last week. I heard about it on Sunday and was stunned. I guess the little fellow somehow wandered into the pool, even though an older (13) sister and cousin were in the pool playing. They were swimming with goggles and just having fun, when one of them noticed Andrew on the bottom of the pool. His mother is a nurse, like a few of our moms here, and she did CPR on him. It wasn't going well at first, but he did come to. I guess the ambulance guys put in a breathing tube and he was in the hospital until Sunday morning. He was released and everything is fine. The whole church had been praying for him, (except me, because I hadn't heard about it), and God came through big time for this charming little boy. He is the only child I watch who calls me by name! If I run into him in a neighborhood store or anything, he calls out my name in such a unique way that I know it is him!
I have noticed a few times someone has posted simply calling themself Mary. Just thought I would say hi and welcome you to the porch. Some folks might think you were me, Mary Wiggins, and that might be why you haven't been welcomed!

Thank you for your kind words of encouragement Ro and Mary Wiggins. It helps. It is a commitment but it isn't as hard as you might imagine. Sean and I both enjoy the curriculum we are using with its mission's emphasis and the books we are reading are great! I guess the hard part is just not having time for myself. By the time the household chores are done (and they are never really DONE) and the schooling is done, and the kids are taken care of, there isn't much time for me. I know I need to work on that one but my husband is working alot of overtime right now.
Mary Wiggins, I read recently that drowning is the no 1 cause of accidental death in young children (Readers's Digest). Thank God your little friend didn't become a statistic. I have contemplated having a pool but I am just too afraid while my kids are young. We also have a family rule that our children can't go swimming anywhere without myself or my husband present. Your story just proves how quickly it can happen even with people in the pool. Children should always be supervised by an adult when they are anywhere near water. So scary.
well, off to eat some lunch!

I seriously doubted it but then I tried to think of a few instances. I thought of a couple. Anybody else got any ideas? I'll tell you mine after you tell me yours. Some of you are soo good at trivia. Aunt Bee's friend, whose name I can't recall, passed away, and Aunt Bee was all upset, until Andy was wise enough to make her mad with his comments about age, and she forgot all about her upset. As I remember it, the friend was actually more of an acquaintance, because Andy reminded Aunt Bee that they had never been close.

I like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, too. Although I haven't seen it in a long time. You know what I hate, though? Is when people try to say that that movie has some "hidden" meaning, like it is all about doing drugs. Have any of you heard people say that? I suppose if you've forgotten what it is like to be a kid, you could see hidden meanings in it and in a lot of movies! But sometimes a candy cane is JUST a candy cane! It's just a neat fantasy movie; leave it alone.
Personally, I feel the same way about the Harry Potter books/movies and people saying it is turning kids to witchcraft and evil. I think if anyone is evil it is the advertisors and marketers who are just trying to make as much money as they can, luring kids to buy Harry Potter merchandise by keeping their interest high with websites or any other way they can.
And although she is benefitting from it, the author really has nothing to do with it.
Ok, rant over. Sorry for taking your discussion on Willy Wonka in a whole other direction, Salty!:) To make it up, I'll buy you a bottle of pop!

Ding! ding! ding! ding! Romeena! You're a winner! Yup, that was the other death on Andy I thought of --Aunt Bee's friend Augusta Finch. You beat Asa to the punch. I expected he'd get that. Sterling, I totally agree with you on the movie thing. My son loves reading Harry Potter and they are thick, huge, books, but then he's a reader. He likes them because they offer the most Accelerated Reader points at school. Anyway, our church is constantly preaching against those books. You'd think the kids that read them were holding seances or something. It gets my back up. I'm not for witchcraft either but I don't see why those books are much different than Wizard of Oz or Sword and the Stone, Witch and the Wardrobe, or any other fantasy stuff. I know someone's going to disagree with me on this one, but the freedom to read a book and determine the meaning still remains. I go back to the episode of the Waltons when all the church folks were wanting to burn all the German books and then one German woman showed them they were burning the Bible along with the others. There's a fine line I guess. I don't want my kids reading porn or smut but I don't believe in banning books either. There! I've said it and I ain't taking it back!

Good Morning porch friends, I dont know why some people have to turn a perfectly good movie into something like that Sterling, and no you didn't offend me or turn this conversation into anything different. I've watched WW for years, and never done the first drugs. I've never seen the Harry Potter things, but I've heard good and bad about them. And as long as it gets a kid to read and keep them from doin other things, then I think thats a good thing. There is one thing that bothers me though, and thats the video games that are out now, I gotta admit some of those things are scarey. Do ya'll remember that Disney movie, Bedknobs and Broomsticks? I remember hearing that it was witchcraft too. And it was like from back in the 60's I think. Anyways.. I'm off my soap box, I'll let someone else use it now. Have a good day--Salty Dog

Charlotte, I can't believe that you know someone who put a sequin in their eye like a contact. I was trying on wedding dresses before our wedding in 1989, That would make my little sister, who was to be the flower girl, about 6 or 7. There were sequins on the floor that had fallen of some of the wedding dresses. I was in the dressing room and my mom and step dad were out waiting for me. She saw a sequin and decided to play like it was a contact lens. My folks held her down and they managed to touch it and thought that they had flipped it out of her eye. She complained the next day of it hurting and so they took her to the emergency room. It took 5 people to hold her down. But, they finally got it out. Just thinking about it hurts me. I guess it didn't leave horrible memories for her though, cause today she wears contact lenses.

Ro, I really think you might appreciate A Christmas story, but....if you rent it, it contains a few curse words. You could probably see it on station TBS during the holidays and any bad words would have been removed. They usually start showing it as soon as Thanksgiving. My dad grew up in the 30's and 40's and he says it is very authentic.
Oh boy, someone had to start the Harry Potter thing! That is a pretty big controversy, isn't it? I must say though, that I have heard some pretty serious teaching on the subject and while, yes, I agree that we have the freedom in this country to decide what we read and parents should certainly have the right to review what their children are reading and make a decision on whether it is appropriate or not, special care needs to be taken when it comes to impressionable children and I don't understand why such material would offer the most Accelerated Reader points when many parents do have convictions against it. I could take time to explain why Harry Potter is different, in my opinion, to some of the other fantasy literature (ie-C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia was mentioned) but it would take a long time and probably hurt someone's feelings. So, alas....I will just be quiet.
"Sometimes a candy cane is JUST a candy cane.". Sterling, you are so funny! I don't see why anyone would think Willy Wonka had any hidden meaning, do you?? It was based on a children's book called Charlie and the Chocolate factory.

Sorry I haven't been on in a while. Been extremely busy lately. At first we thought Annabelle might be able to make it to MD '03, but now it's lookin' very slim chance. She's been havin' trouble with high blood pressure, so doc has put her on bed rest. He says that there's even the possibility that later on in the pregnancy that she might have to stay at the hospital on bed rest.
He's not for sure right now, but he's just preparing us for the worst. More than likely I'm not gonna be goin' either. I believe that everything is gonna be alright, but I'd hate to be in Mt. Airy and have something go wrong back home.
We're gonna wait a couple of more weeks, or one more doctor's visit, to get a better idea and make a decision then. I'll keep everyone posted.
Just keep us in your prayers.

We only have sports video games in our house and even at that, the Tony Hawk skateboarding one is questionable. When the skaterboarders fall, it shows blood squirt out. To me, THAT certainly isn't necessary. After getting that one, I've decided we should stick to baseball, basketball and football. Sorry if I made you feel like you couldn't, and I would never say "I told you so"! You know the old saying about how people in glass houses shouldn't throw rocks and I wouldn't dare critisize you.
Sounds like you had a real tough time, homemaker. I have given IV Magnesium Sulfate to many patients and most don't like the way it makes them feel but thank God for it. Way back when I first started working in labor and delivery, we had to give the Mag Sulfate as an injection. We did something called (Ro will remember this) deep intramuscular Z-track. You had to administer 10cc of solution very deeply into the muscle (in the hip) and the needle was about 5 inches long. To do it correctly it took two nurses, one to pull tightly on the person's hip and the other to inject the med way down into the muscle. The worst part was you had to repeat it in alternate sides every three to four hours. It was horrible. Thank God they don't give it that way anymore. We would hide the syringe behind our backs and never let the pt's see it or they never would have let us give it to them! Sounds so barbaric now.
Well, I think I will go take a rest. I have been feeling kind of poorly lately. Have a great evening...

That one is Z-tracked as well, because if it reaches the skin surface it leaves a permanent brown stain from the iron. I haven't given that in a very long time, wonder if it's still in use?
That poor soul (15319)! I don't think he's wrapped very tight, and he needs some help. I hope he gets it.
Mr. Schwump, my prayers are with you and Annabelle. Those PIH (pregnancy-induced hypertension) bedrest periods can get long and dreary, but as others have noted, the outcome is worth it. But why am I telling you that? You two already know it, or you wouldn't be going through all this.
I'd appreciate all your prayers tomorrow, as we prepare to welcome our little grandson into the world around noon. The parents are my son and daughter-in-law, the ones who lost the little one just after birth last September, due to some lethal skeletal anomalies. Level four sonograms have indicated that this little fellow is normal and there should be no problems at all. We're holding on to that, and to the Lord. I'll let you know something when I get home tomorrow evening. They already have a 2 1/2 yr old son who is healthy, and this little guy will help to complete their family.
