June 15, 2003 - Msg 14248: Good morning, porch. It's now 6:45am, and my dad's prayer has been answered. A little over an hour after I posted my last message, I got a call from the hospice nurse that my dad's condition was changing drastically. I threw on some clothes and drove over there, about a 5 minute drive, but he was gone. He passed away at 3:15, very peacefully. His prayer has been answered, and I can only thank God. He was not happy here, he lived in a state of confusion, and the confusion often produced fear, and that's no way to live. He is now in Heaven with my mother and his Lord, and I'm grateful. Thank you, dear friends, for your loving concern and your prayers. It has meant a lot. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Romeena already answered Sterling's question about Dabbs Greer. Linda, that is really cool about your hubby fitting Mr. Greer for glasses! He also made another appearance on TAGS, but danged if I can remember what character he played.

Sterling, sometimes you try to be a kind, stand-up person, but it winds up biting you in the backside anyway. LOL! Some folks personalize any difference of opinion, but you can't concern yourself with that. You just keep on being yourself and not hurting anyone. If someone has a problem with that, then it says more about them than it does you.

June 15, 2003 - Msg 14265: Didn't Dabbs also play the man who was hauled into the courthouse with his wife for domestic violence (remember, his wife hit him with a chicken or something)? Andy was getting on them about fighting again.

I watched part of "A Face In The Crowd" yesterday. Remember that is the old movie that starred a very "rough around the edges" Andy as a homeless character they called Lonesome Rhodes? He becomes famous and turns into a strange ego-maniac. The acting was good but I sure hated to see Andy in a role like that. I have to admit though, that in the scene where Andy is reclining on the hotel bed and asks Patricia Neal to come on over and get to know him better, I felt strangely warm inside (heehee). He was pretty good looking, I thought.

Well, I have had some sleepless nights with my youngest--she has a virus and a fever with a cought. I think I will go rest while she is napping. Hope tomorrow is a better day. Prayers for Ro and her family at this time.

Friends, I can't find the words, but I'll try. You folks have been so supportive and so loving as I've walked this path with my dad, and you'll never really know how much you have helped. I've been very sure of the decisions we've made, and comfortable with them. They weren't really our decisions, but rather we were carrying out his expressed wishes. Still, having your validation has meant so much. While no one in my "real" world has actually said anything negative, some have looked a bit thoughtful or even a little disapproving when I've made it known that we weren't pursuing aggressive treatment, or any kind of life support. I can ride over that, and chalk it up to the fact that they have probably never had to make the choices, but still it hurts a little, and having you good people say that you understand has helped tremendously. I thank you.

And now, the ironing board beckons. I'm pretty beat. Got about an hour's sleep last night, thought I'd sleep this morning after it was all over, but unable to do so. Phone calls, things to be done, I finally gave up, got up and have been going strong ever since. Lunch at my friend's home (my daughter-in-law's mom), then a meeting at the funeral home to get the arrangements settled. I'm tired now, and off to bed I go. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

It's coming up on 1:00 a.m. our time, but cars are still pouring into the downtown area by the thousands for the festivities! The Academy sports stores are still open and have lines of people around the building, waiting to be let into the store - 20 people at a time - to buy Spurs Championship t-shirts, hats, etc. We're awfully proud of our guys. God bless David Robinson for being the gentleman he is. We'll miss him on the court, but at least he's staying here in S.A. He and my brother go to the same church!

Romeena, I want to join everyone else here on the porch who has expressed their condolences, and I want you to include me among all those who are celebrating your dad's life. I am sure the funeral will be a joyful time reminding us all of the streets of gold and the mansions prepared for us, when we live our life surrendered to God. Thank you for letting us all be included in this sensitive time in your life.

To all you Texans, congratulations on the Spurs winning the championship! You have a great team down there, especially the quintessential gentleman, David Robinson! Who could not want him to win?!! I like the New Jersey Nets somewhat, but I really wanted San Antonio to win, ESPECIALLY when Charles Barkley said their last win didn't count! Well, enough of basketball talk until next year...then...go Pistons!!

I hope all you dad's out there enjoyed a fun father's day! I made baby back ribs for my hubbie and father-in-law, and then we enjoyed the only Sunday in months that was relatively warm and rain free! It was probably the prettiest day we have had all year around here!

But does anyone know what I could do with leftover roast w/potatoes & other veggies, besides just heating it up? It was so good the first time around, but I was just wondering if there was something I might add to it to make it even better! If not, that's ok. Sometimes leftovers taste even better just heated up again.

June 18, 2003 - Msg 14305: Bubble and Squeak....It is a for real dish and made from the ingredients you have left over from your roast. Just add a little oil and fry until warm and juicy. At least this is what Trevor tells me Bubble and Squeak is. He says everyone in England eats it and loves it. I am not much of a cook, so good luck on your cooking.

June 18, 2003 - Msg 14306: Well, so that's what Bubble and Squeak is. Around here we call it hash, or leftovers hash. I just dice some potatoes and saute until nearly done (if I need some filler), then add the leftovers, which I have also diced. Usually a couple of shakes of steak sauce or Worcestershire make it "extry good". Heat until all is hot, and serve. My family loved it.

Now, I must tell you all that I'm just overwhelmed. I just visited the online guest book for my dad, and you people are truly amazing. The sweet words, the kind expressions of concern and love - well, you're the cats, that's what you are. Mavis, thanks for making the link. I've just got to learn how to do that! fun girl, what a sweet thought, but there's a little hitch! Daddy gave away a lot of candy, but rarely ate any of it himself. He just liked to give it away and let others enjoy it. So you just go ahead and eat any kind you like, and he'd be honored.

Well, it's after 3am, and I have to be up by 7, so guess I'd better get to bed. Kids and grandkids and a granddog sleeping all over the house, hope I don't step on somebody on the way to my room! Bubble and Squeak, huh?! Sounds easy enough. Or is that what your stomach does when you eat it?:) Unfortunately I don't have much luck when it comes to frying things, I usually end up burning them. But thank you Fun Girl and Romeena for your suggestions! Romeena, I actually used both steak sauce and worchestershire sauce the first time around, so I'm way ahead of you there.
I may just take the easy way out and zap the whole thing in the microwave. No fuss, no muss!
What is muss anyway? Must be like Bubble and Squeak.:)

Gotta head to D.C. again tomorrow, Jake is going to spend the summer with his dad & I am going to work for the weekend there. Gonna see how it goes with Jake being there & if Pat can handle having a 15 year old on the run back home. He is still in pretty bad shape physically, mentally, he's better but still depressed often. Sterling, to help keep fried or sauteéd food from sticking, try putting on a fitted lid and turning the heat down a tad. Then, when the food is almost done, take that lid off, up the heat a hair and brown it. Voilá! Well, it works for me. =:-þ

June 19, 2003 - Msg 14325: I watched the show Starsky and Hutch, but I could not tell you which one was which. I preferred the dark haired one tho. Just something more manly about him I thought.

And if I was a man I would pick Mary Ann every time. She seemed like someone you would want to be best friends with. Someone who would not stab you in the back over a man. I always thought if the professor could get his nose out of his test tubes long enough, that they would make an adorable couple. And I am sure that Mary Ann could teach him a thing or two. Ginger was not the only one who could use her womanly wyles. Mary Ann was just more subtle......alot like me. LOL!!

June 19, 2003 - Msg 14327: I also like Gerald McRainey - esp when he was in uniform (Major Dad!). I grew out of the Donny Osmond phaze (as my husband says when I fell in love with Barry Manilow! - I have a thing for Barry but not enough to spend hundreds of dollars per ticket to see him!)
At Indy tonite - some great bands Journey, REO and Styx. That should be awesome. But tomorrow is a work day and we head south for wedding number 2 of the month. So no concert for us oldies tonite! The only thing my boys are looking forward to is the swimming pool! Weddings - Yuck, they kiss at weddings mom!

June 19, 2003 - Msg 14329: Oh, the Fonz, no question. Next I think would be Potsie. Bit of a dork, but the kind of guy that would be faithful as an old shoe to a woman who would treat him right, and could be inspired to do great things. Cute, too.

Well, the kids have all returned to their respective homes, and all is quiet around here. An exhausted little Plum is sacked out on an ottoman, and I'd love to get on the sofa and do the same thing, but can't. Movers are coming in two hours to get the last of the furniture out of my dad's apartment. They have someone waiting for the space, so I need to get it cleared out. I remember how it was when we were waiting for it. It's such a pretty apartment, and Daddy was reasonably happy there.

The funeral was absolutely beautiful, and I could almost say - fun. Many happy stories told of times past, a lot of laughter at some of the memories. It was a bit unorthodox in some ways, but Daddy would have loved it. My daughter sang "Blessed Redeemer" and "It Is Well With My Soul", and did it beautifully. Then a men's quartet sang "Jericho Road" and "Just a Closer Walk With Thee". My dad sang tenor in a quartet in our home church when I was a little sprout, and those two songs were big in their repertoire, so we chose them for their sentimental value. I just know my dad was singing along with them yesterday.

He always joked with us through the years, saying that when he was about to leave this earth, he wanted us to put a bucket on the foot of his bed, and when we heard it hit the floor we'd know that he had "kicked the bucket". Well, the floral spray from my four kids was in a tin bucket. Beautiful, but in a bucket. I loved it! It drew smiles from a lot of people, especially after the pastor explained it at the graveside.

Daddy was known as "The Candy Man" at Twelve Oaks, because he passed out candy to the other residents every day. He would give it to the staff as well, and he always took a baggie full to the church secretary every Sunday morning. So, since there was a good amount left from his stash of candy, we had baskets placed in the foyer, and everyone was invited to get some candy on their way out of the church, compliments of my dad.

He had those bad strokes weekend before last, and was almost comatose on the following Monday. On Tuesday morning, I was there with him, and he woke up a bit, with his mouth terribly dry. I dripped a bit of water in and he swallowed okay. More water, waking up more, swallowing. Finally awake and talking, to my utter amazement. My son and daughter-in-law came in and he knew them. They asked if he wanted anything and he said he wanted A&W root beer. My son said he could make that happen, and started to leave, but turned back and asked once more if Daddy was sure he wanted root beer, not something else. Daddy lifted up a little, got a sly little grin on his face and said "Yes, root beer, if you'll go on and get it before I die," and then laughed out loud. So, in his honor, at the graveside we had A&W root beer iced down and everyone was served a little paper cup of root beer, in my dad's honor.

There was a small basket of fresh flowers, with a ribbon that read "From Sugarplum." The Plum had me do that for her, because she loved him, too. My dad was truly loved by all, including the furkids.

fun girl, to answer your question from a day or two back, The Plum the Snickers,(the granddog) get along beautifully and always have. It's hilarious to watch them. The Plum plays hostess, bringing her toys to Snickers and inviting her to play. Sometimes they'll each get on an end of a BoodaBone rope tie, and just charge through the house, like two little horses in a double hitch. They have never fought, and often curl up together. It's very sweet, and Snickers is just the most delightful little thing you could ever meet. She's a mix of Schnauzer and Scottie (we think) and is adorable.

He's been good,no drinking,but hasn't gotten involved in AA or some type of support group yet. I know how important that it,so I will press on. He is getting support by way of e-mails from a relative who has been sober for 25 or so years, thanks to AA.Just keep praying-thanks.
By the way,how did I miss the fact that you and David Cassidy were engaged, Charlotte? I used to read Tiger Beat magazine back in the 70's and I never saw any engagement announcement or anything! Y'all sure kept it hush hush. Too bad you broke off the engagement!

My husband and I are about to start a whirlwind art festival tour that will last the summer, so I may not be around quite as much, but I will check in when I can. I hope this season goes well for him, he is such a hard working, dedicated man and I really hope and pray God will reward his diligence and faithfulness. The Lord knows we have our differences, but there really isn't a person alive I admire more than him!

Asa - some more new babies - underwear eating kind. We have only named one so far - and his name is Cimarron. I have three boys yet to name and one girl. I try to keep the family names going. So Diamond had two boys and a girl and she may be Precious or Treasure or something that would go with Diamond. (The boys call her Spiderman in real life). I may end up with Incredible Hulk out there yet - which would suit a boy. And Starr's little boy can't be Starbuck because I have already had that name so if you have any idea - they will be considered. I don't have too many common names and if I do, I try to fancy up the spelling like Rubee, Ebonee, Carmel's Chocolate Creme, -

First of all let me say: Laverne, Richie as I have a great fondness for red headed men and that's why I married fungi, John from CHIPS, whichever Hardy Boy was played by Shawn Cassidy. (Yes, I loved him too. I was about 15 when he hit his stride tho.) One of the Monkees was on a rerun of BOY MEETS WORLD the other night on the Disney Channel, and naturally he played a guy who had been in a band when he was younger. It was not the one who wore the sock cap and not Davey Jones and not Peter whoever. So whoever is left over, that's who it was.

I suppose you folks did not know that I was once secretly engaged to Steve Perry from Journey either. Yep. Dumped him and broke his heart and that is the real untold story about why Journey broke up. You heard it here first folks. But it was a hot and torid romance while it lasted. I have always loved those long haired men. LOL Now who did you prefer, Roy DeSoto or Johnny Gage from Emergency One? I prefered Johnny myself. I always thought I would like to be rescued from a car accident by someone who looked like him. But to tell you the truth the guy who rescued me a couple months ago looked more like STEVE from Jerry Springer, which was not an entirely bad thing either. (I really don't watch it as a habit, but have seen him once or twice. HONEST!)

Ro, glad that you all had such a memorable service for your dear father. Seems like someone who was loved a great deal.

I will blow plenty of kisses to David for you all. Of course mine will be the only ones that stick. LOL I will be here with a full report as soon as I get back.

June 21, 2003 - Msg 14347: Hey, everybody! Vacation Bible schol is finally over and I am releived. It was a long week.

Ro, I want to thank you for sharing your Dad's funeral with us. You put a smile on my face and I rejoice so much with you that your dad was ready to meet the Lord. I know how important that is and have not given up on the Lord concerning my dad.

Now as far as TV personalities, I was a bit more level-headed and had a huge crush on the "Texaco Man" that pumped our gas when I was a child. He was a tall, curly haired fellow that was drop-dead handsome and if I saw him today I would still drool. The only man on TV I ever had the hots for was Richard Chamberlain in Shogun and now that he is "out of the closet" It's just not the same (know what i mean?).

I saw the Mayberry RFD episode tonight when Andy and Helen got married. I had never seen it before. I wanted to scream at Andy, "Don't do it!! Marry Peggy, instead!!". Oh well, he will have to live with it, not me. heehee

I think I will turn in and sleep in for a change. Ya'll have a great tomorrow!

Can you believe it? Two postings in 2 days!! (I like to be consistant!) My reading goes on in the archives and they are quite the goin's on. Sorry to have missed so much. Ro- hang in there. Believe it or not, the sad times will be fewer and fewer and the warm memories will one day be dominate. One thing I did when my mom died of cancer, I journaled everything I could remember and the things we talked about, time tables, etc. Even after her death I wrote thoughts, feelings, things I would have shared with her. ( I was 7 months pregnant with #2 when the Lord called her home) They were healing acts and I found it the other day and read over the pages! How wonderful to look back and think how the Lord had eased the pain! And how far I have come... We are praying for you. Now,... off to find something to do while it's raining. HHHMMMM let's see, - clean? NO. Dishes?- No. Laundry?- Again? NO! Reruns of Mayberry?-- Now that's the ticket!!! See ya later. New Neighbor

June 21, 2003 - Msg 14353: new neighbor, you're so right. I kept a journal for over three years after my beloved husband passed away so suddenly and abruptly. I was a wreck, both emotionally and spiritually, and often poured it all out in that journal. Sometimes when I'm down, I go back and re-read it. You'd think it would make me feel worse, but it doesn't. It shows me how far God has brought me, and gives me hope for how far He can take me in the future. I made a few entries in it after my mom died in 1999, and probably will visit it again in the weeks to come. I will keep it forever, probably, because it's possible it could be of some help to my kids in the future. Who knows? My oldest son already has instructions to enter my computer after my death and retrieve anything he thinks would be meaningful, whether it's records, account numbers, or more abstract things such as the journal. Lots and lots of pictures stored here, too. Aren't computers wonderful?
