homemaker, you're right about the baby goats. They are just the sweetest, cutest little things. Very cuddly and soft for a short time, then they get like adolescent human kids, and think they are just so smart. Lots of running, jumping, climbing, kicking around - so cute. My daughter and her family had goats for a few years. I grew up in the country, but we never had goats.
Well, off I go, got many errands to run. Have a great day, friends. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena
January 13, 2003 - Msg 11442:
I am so happy to hear all this nice talk about goats! I am planning on having some when we build on our land (I guess I should say "buying some" because i certainly won't be "having some". My birthing days are over!). I want to raise some Pygmy goats. I think they are the cutest, sweetest things! I would only raise a couple for pets, though. couldn't possibly kill them. I met one named "Houdini" at a nearby zoo. He got out of the pen and followed the kids all over the park. Very friendly sort of fellow. The zoo employee said he got his name by escaping his pen when nobody saw him. they still don't know how he gets out.
Was it you, Marry wiggins, asking about Texas? Let me tell you, I am a tried and true, very proud Texan but I would not describe most of it as pretty. There is alot of virgin land in Texas and lots of space. Some of it pretty, some of it really desolate. It's a really hot place, too. The hill country is pretty and the forrest in East Texas is nice and South Padre island is pretty. Don't come here if you are looking for mountains, though. We do have some mountains in West Texas in the Big Bend area but they are like the mountains you see in old westerns. Not real lush, if you know what I mean. Texas is not a real tame place and some people like that. Lots of Rednecks, too (can't say I like that). There is a strong Hispanic influence everywhere and that is nice. We are raised on Mexican food here in Texas (that and chicken fried steak with gravy!). People are nice, home town folks, mostly. If you like space, this is the place. I can stand and see for miles in any direction from just about any location in Texas! Ha-no kidding. Guess that's why we like things big in Texas, we are used to large expanses. Just about everyone I know (including myself) drives a Suburban. Can't abide by a wimpy, gas miser vehicle!
Gotta go I have a visitor. Later, friends, and "Remember the Alamo!".

Seriously though Boo, I was wondering, and you'll have to forgive my ignorance as I have never been to Texas, but are many old west ghost towns around there? That's something I'd definitely want to see. I love the history of the old west and things from that era.
As for goats, I guess they're ok. It's just that those eyes freak me out a little bit, kind of like a cat's eye but turned on it's side. ...Weird!
Everyone you know drives a Suburban, Boo?! Gas must be pretty cheap down there.

Gas is about 1.30 here but, no pain no gain.
There really aren't alot of Ghost Towns around here. Lots of old towns still in operation, though. If you go out west you can find some pretty interesting places like Pecos, which is the home of the infamous Judge Roy Bean. Seems to me there is alot more of what you would find interesting in Arizona or New Mexico. The Alamo is sitting in the middle of down town San Antonio so not much atmosphere there. Goliad is probably the town with the most history. It's in south Texas and is where General Fannin fought. Thousands died there and there are some wonderful old missions in great condition.
Sterling, have you ever been to Tombstone, Arizona? that's kind of touristy but you might like it, or there are some neat old towns in Colorado.
Well, better go get dinner started for tonight. Can't decide what to cook. I've got chicken in the freezer but want a new way to fix it. I am open to suggestions. I made chicken and dumplings last week. I have an easy recipe for chicken that ya'll might like to try. It's called Cranberry Chicken. I don't even like cranberries but I like this dish alot. All you do is put your chicken in a baking dish then you mix a can of jellied cranberry sauce with a package of Lipton Beefy Onion Soup Mix. You have to stir it together then just put it over the chicken and bake uncovered. It makes a good, sweet sauce as it bakes. Try it, you'll like it.
Gotta run!

Gas here ranges from 1.34 in Lawrenceburg to 1.50 in Greensburg (that's about a span of 50 miles from east to west). The little quick stop has been 1.49 for ages. We filled my husband's truck up in Lawrenceburg over the weekend. WE thought we had found a real bargain.

Hi All Will it cold out to night and i am stay in for the night.
I'll Gather Daffodils
The ice-clad brook is murmuring,
warmed by the sun soft ray;
the robin's in the tree again
to sing at break of day.
Along the garden wall nearby,
so lately filled with gloom,
the daffodils are nodding
to show off their pretty blooms.
Swollen buds on bush and tree
are bursting in the air;
Mother Nature seems most anxious
to call forth her blossoms fair.
Although I must not wander far,
Homebound by household chores,
I'll gather up bright daffodils
and bring sweet Spring indoors.

Charlotte, I don't know what kind of a mess your life is in, but know that it will clear up. The days will be getting brighter in a couple months, and hopefully so will your outlook with it. If it has to due with the increased darkness of the season, maybe you, Mrs. Wiley, or anyone who feels down this time of year should go get yourselves some bright, sweet-smelling flowers and bring the spring indoors, as Tom suggested in his poem. Smells can have a powerful effect on the mind. In fact, I remember one time I was standing real close to Otis while he was talking to me and I almost felt drunk myself afterwards! I even had to call myself a cab. Then I realized that there weren't any cabs in Mayberry, so I just staggered home.
Boo, I've never been to Tomestone, at least I can't remember if I was. My parents took us kids out west a long time ago, but I was too young to remember most of that and where we went. I do remember the Grand Canyon. Who could forget that!
I do vaguely remember being put in an old jail cell with my brothers in an old west town. We didn't do anything, I think it was just so my parents could get a picture(yes, they did have cameras back when I was little, geeze!). Maybe that was in Tombstone. I'll have to ask to see exactly where we went, but I'd love to see those things today now that I'm older and smarter. Well, older anyway.
Have a good day!

Charlotte and Mrs. Wiley, I am sorry for your struggles and I know it is so hard to be in the middle of it. I will certainly pray for you today. I want to encourage you to gaurd your mind against worry. Fill it with the Word of God and when those fearful thoughts come, refuse them and replace them with scriptures of hope and encouragement. We can get so low if we focus on the negative instead of the goodness of God. remember the verse that says, "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee: because he trusts in Thee."-Isa.26:3 Another good one is in Psalms: ""I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety."-Psalm 4:8 God really does love you .

Romeena, I did get your e-mail and coincidentally I just mailed you a package yesterday. I am pretty slow getting moving since the holidays! Expect it in the mail within the next couple of days.
Mrs. Wiley, I loved your quote from the episode where Gomer goes into the marines. I remember that one and I just love Gomer's optimism that the marines will be willing to meet him halfway too! Quintessential Mayberryism!
Briscoe, I hope you don't get too snowed in! But it sounds like you put in a good supply to get you through. Sounds right cozy if I do say so myself!
And good old Tom, conjuring up all these pleasant thoughts of spring! Really brightens up the porch doesn't it?!
I have one amusing antecdote about my little Opie I'd like to quickly share... We had the pleasure of baby-sitting my little nephew again yesterday. He is 4 and my youngest is 5, although my Opie is a LOT bigger than my nephew cause he was a preemie and all. Those two boys can sure cause a ruckus though and I decided to give my poor house a break and let them tear up the playscape at a local McDonald's. They had a ball there! I don't understand what can make a body want to climb up ladders, run through obstacle courses, slide down a slide, and then run right back around and do it again, over and over and over!? But, my plan worked and they got to expend LOTS of energy there. When we came home later, my Opie told me there was another boy there who was blocking their way sometimes and that he was being mean to my little nephew. My little Opie told me he said to himself, "Self, nobody is going to treat my little cousin like that!" I like to have died laughing! And the best part is, just about an hour before this the two boys were fighting over the seat in a shopping cart and my little Opie shoved his little cousin right on the ground! It's funny how you can get mad at your own kin, but if somebody else does, well watch out!
Have a great day!

I'm with you, Asa, I love that part with Barney and the lamp. What about that hilarious scene at the end after he and Thelma Lou make up? The way he looks is hysterical. What would the world be without Barney Fife?
Hey, it's cold here today and supposed to freeze tonight. My tropical plants and Petunias have been blooming all winter but I guess I will have to cover them up tonight. Hopefully it will be the only freeze this year. Can ya'll believe that sometimes we don't even get so much as one freeze in the winter? Are you jealous, yet? Am I rubbing it in? Just hang on, you will be real glad you don't live in Texas when summer comes and you can't keep your flowers alive because of the heat and drought.
I don't think that Frank Myers is the same Myers from Myer's lake. Maybe a relative. heehee
Gotta go, the little ones are up and running.

Glad things are looking up, Charlotte!
Hey, Lovey Dovey. Good to see you on the porch this morning. Sit here on the porch swing with me and you can share my blanket. I brought a thermos with coffee, too. Hope you take cream and sugar. So, tell me more about yourself and where you're from. I am assuming Lucky Chucky is your husband and how wonderful that your dear mom is doing well at 92!
Homemaker, I talked to a cousin of mine who has had goats and knows people who raise goats and he tells me that they can get out of any fence you put them in and that they will find your most treasured posession and eat it! Says he knew a guy that had a newly restored Stingray (car) and the goats got in and ate the seats. They had a big bar-b-que that night, if you know what I mean. Now if all that is true, i may have to rethink this goat thing. Tell me it ain't true!! I have really got my heart set on a baby goat. Last year we visited a goat farm near here and I think they might have been Boer goats. they were big, for sure and the males had those big, curled horns. The man who took care of them bent over to do something and one of the males butted him so hard, he flew 20 ft through the air. Poor guy was old, too, but didn't seem to get hurt by it. Some baby goats were born while we were there and, boy, were they adorable!
I think I will look up those Boer goats and read more about them. Better go start the day. Blessings!
Boo
January 17, 2003 - Msg 11517:
Well, I just looked up the Boer goats and they aren't the ones I saw. Boer goats are huge! 200 to 300 pounds! They are beautiful with their red heads, though. Looks like they might eat alot.

January 17, 2003 - Msg 11518:
Howdy, friends, and welcome to Lovey-Dovey! This is a great porch, you're gonna like it here.
Now, I'm not knocking goats - I, too, think they're a fun animal, and the babies are wonderfully cute and sweet. One word of reason here, though. Boo, you said you have your heart set on a baby goat. Don't forget - babies grow up into adults. Just as our own "kids" turn into (groan) teenagers, so do baby goats grow up.
I remember about ten years ago, my dear husband and I were at the Livestock Show in Ft. Worth, and someone was selling baby pot-bellied pigs. Cute?? Listen, the definition of "cute" is a baby pot-bellied pig. Cutest little thing I ever saw, all pink with charcoal gray spots, and would just cuddle right down in your arms. Naturally, I wanted one, in the worst way, and immediately started my campaign. I could just picture it as a sweet little housepet. My indulgent but level-headed husband talked me into waiting until the following year, and promised he'd get me one then if I still wanted it. Well, by the next year, I had seen some of them all grown up, and believe me, I didn't want one. Grown up, they are the biggest, ugliest beasts you ever saw. Some people who have them say they remain sweet-natured, and I'm glad they do, because anything that big and that ugly would need some redeeming quality! Naturally, I didn't get one. Imagine a 300 lb hog with 4" tusks lumbering around in the house!
possum, the Plum is definitely planning on being the team mascot again this year, but she says if you don't mind being a (ahem) d--'s assistant, she could use the help. That would free me to work the concession stand. She can carry her backpack and pull her wagon, but loading them is a little tough, since she doesn't have thumbs. Come to think of it, do possums have thumbs??
Well, gotta run, haven't put my trash out, and I hear the truck! Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena
January 17, 2003 - Msg 11519:
Well Boo - we love our goats and the males are the big ones - most of our does are not up to 200 pounds. My boys (ages 5 and 6) go in the pasture and love on them (and the goats have horns) and they are as content as can be. One of our goats is named "Fudge" and she is just about the sweetest thing. Our new billie (Van Gogh) is a sweetie too. About the only precious thing they have eaten here is our neighbors flowers. Otherwise they just eat the grass until we get them penned back up.
So Asa - did you watch Ripleys - probably not!
Hugs for you all!

From the associated press on the abc.com page:
NASHVILLE, Tenn. Jan. 17 —
The way Andy Griffith sees it, his career has come full circle.
After a failed attempt as a professional singer, he went on to create two of television's most memorable characters in Sheriff Andy Taylor and lawyer Ben Matlock.
Now, at 76, Griffith is receiving recognition for his singing. He recorded two gospel albums in the 1990s one of which, "I Love to Tell the Story," won a Grammy in 1997 and he is recording a Christmas album for release later this year.
He will perform Saturday at the Grand Ole Opry, sharing the stage with songwriter Marty Stuart for a mix of story and song.
"Here at the back of my life, I'm singing and it is very rewarding," Griffith said.
The show, televised at 8 p.m. EST on cable's Country Music Television, isn't Griffith's first at the Opry. He performed there in the 1950s and as recently as 1999 with bluegrass great Earl Scruggs, but mainly as a comedian rather than a singer.
As a young man, he was a music major in college and taught music at a North Carolina high school. He dreamed of a professional singing career.
But he had trouble finding work. During one audition the man in charge stopped him during the first chorus of "Dancing in the Dark," called him aside and told him: "You'll never find a place in theater especially not as a singer."
His first success came with humorous monologues "What it Was, Was Football" and "Romeo and Juliet," which were told in a hayseed persona. The monologues led to an appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show" and the leading role in the Broadway production of "No Time for Sergeants."
His film debut came in the critically acclaimed "A Face in the Crowd" in 1957, and a year later he made a film version of "No Time for Sergeants."
But his breakthrough was "The Andy Griffith Show," which began in 1960 and ran for eight years on CBS. The folksy comedy was set in the fictional village of Mayberry, which was based on Griffith's real hometown of Mount Airy, N.C.
"It was about a little town and the people who lived there," Griffith said. "I think that was the secret. People could look in on this little town."
Griffith was paired with the bumbling but lovable Deputy Barney Fife, played by Don Knotts. The combination was a stroke of comic genius.
"I was supposed to tell funny stories about people in Mayberry," Griffith recalled. "Don called me after he saw the pilot and said, 'Don't you need a deputy?'" I realized Don should be funny and I should play straight man for him. Don made it happen."
The show never dropped below seventh place in the Nielsen ratings, and it was No. 1 the year it ended. It remains popular in syndicated reruns and has inspired clubs and books, including a cookbook of dishes mentioned in the show.
Griffith's career stalled in the 1970s. Like many actors from successful TV shows, he was typecast and had trouble landing other parts. He appeared in several made-for-TV movies, often as the villain in an attempt to break his Andy Taylor image.
Then, in 1984 Griffith played a prosecuting attorney in the miniseries "Fatal Vision," a role that impressed NBC executives and led to the "Matlock" series about a wily Southern lawyer. The show, a crime drama with humor, ran for nine years and revitalized his career.
"That show was very hard to do," he said. "I spent a lot of time on scripts on 'Matlock' and the memory work was astounding. A courtroom scene took eight hours to learn."
Since "Matlock," Griffith has turned his attention to singing and recording. His first album for Sparrow Records, a collection of gospel hymns and songs, sold more than 2 million copies. His Christmas album will be a mix of holiday standards and stories, including a Grandpa Jones tale called "The Christmas Guest."
Not that he has ever been far from a guitar and a song. Whether picking a bluegrass tune on "The Andy Griffith Show" or conducting a choir on "Matlock," he blended music and comedy.
"I love music and want to make it a part of everything I do," he said.
