"Over the river and through the woods, to Grandmother's house we go. The horse knows the way to carry the sleigh through the white and drifted snow....."
Just imagine that it's 1890 and you and the family are loading up the sleigh with goodies and getting ready for the trip to Grandma's for Thanksgiving. Ma bundles up the little ones in their warmest coats and mittens, then she wraps their heads with the wool scarves she made last Spring. After all the little ones are in the sleigh, Pa puts the stone he warmed and wrapped in a cloth under their feet and tucks the blankets around them. Finally they are ready for the trip through the woods. They will have to spend the night at Grandma's because they could never get back before nightfall. The little ones look forward to sleeping on Grandma's big feather bed near the fire, tucked snugly under Grandma's handmade quilts!
The ride in the sleigh is magic! Everything is white and the breath of the horses steam in the cold morning air. Someone says, "Let's sing!" and the songs begin...
Finally we can see the smoke from Grandma's chimney, and then the cabin comes into view. There's Grandma and Grandpa waving us in! It is always so good to see them, and soon other family arrives with with cold, red noses and joyful smiles.
Finally all are assembled and the warm greetings are exchanged. It's time to sit down at Grandma's long table and say thanks for God's many blessings. All is quiet for those few moments of contemplation except for the crackling of the fire. Each member around the table begins to share the ways they have been blessed during the year then they bow their heads as Grandpa says the blessing. Hearts are full.
Grandpa carves the succulent turkey as everyone passes the mashed potatoes and gravy, cornbread dressing with cranberry sauce and sweet potatos sweetened with molasses and brown sugar.
Everyone eats until there is no room for the pumkin pies and rice pudding. Those will be served later with a pot of strong, black coffee.
OK, end of novel. Does someone else want to take over now and finish the story?

Why Friendship is so specia
A friend is like finding a treasur,
like discovering a seashell along the shore,
and they fill the emptiness of the heart
with happiness galore!
a fried is considered extra-special;
someone who's loyal and cares
when our heart seems to be breaking
and life's cupboards are empty and bare.
they hold out a hand and hold on
even if distance separates and sends away,
for there's a warmth that ever linger-
between true friends it forever stays
friendship is sacrificing
for another who's precious to you.
it's offering a small portion of yourself
cause your heart tells you the right thing to do.
a friend is a smile , a cheer or two-
someone who listened with love.
you know you've discovered a friend nearby
when it feels as if an angel was sent from above.
friendship is so specia
and i believe it was created on earth
to reveal that all are orecious-
it brings out true values and worth.

I am about 2 hours from Layfayette Indiana. And from what I have heard, the snow will not be missing US. We are supposed to be getting up to 2 inches. Now I have to make my hubby go and pick up our tree. We are gonna get a 6.5 foot one that has the fiber optic lights. I know that it is not very authentic, but I have always been fascinated with those fiber optic lights. Almost put me in a trance. (That and a jug o'squeezings.)I am listening to Jimmy Buffett's Christmas CD right now. He is a hoot! If you want an awesome Christmas CD and you like country music, check our Toby Keith--Christmas to Christmas. Alot of original stuff and sure makes you think about the true meaning of the season.
I may have asked this last year but does anyone remember the aluminum Christmas trees with the pom-poms on the end of the branches? You bought a revolving light that sat on the ground and it made the tree look all different colors? My precious Grandma had one when we were little and it seemed to me I had never seen anything so beautiful. I checked on Ebay about buying one last year. My bids just missed each time. I saw one at Goodwill one year and I was afraid to ask how much it was. The lady in front of me asked and they said only $7.50. She bought it and I could have kicked myself. Oh well maybe some day I will find one. If anyone out there has one they would like to sell, please let me know.
Now as for the things that I am thankful for...these days I just look at my son and thank God that he is safe and healthy, same goes for my hubby. Good friends, health, love and all the things that we take for granted.....a home, food, clothing, warmth. But most of all, for the wonderful Lord of ours who sent His precious Son so that one day my friend Deneen may be reunited with her darling Brandon. The visitation is tonight and I am going at 6:30. Please be praying for the family still. The funeral is at 2:00 tomorrow.
Well all those things and a jug and you have my list of things I am thankful for. That and each and every one of you of course.
With much love and thankfulness for your friendship all through the year.

They were walking and the oldest one slipped on ice and went over them, the younger one dove in trying to save her sister and both were there for several hours before anyone knew. This is the hardest call we have ever had. I was at work and couldn't go but it was hard anyway. Please pray for this family and our fire department members. I saw one without pom poms that looked kinda scraggly and sparse the other day (about 4 foot) for $45 at a shop here and another smaller one with pom poms for $65! A little too rich for my blood. Prayers for the family that lost the girls. How tragic, especially to lose loved ones during the holidays. I remember several years ago I was driving over a bridge near home and came upon a fresh accident on Thanksgiving. Being a nurse, I stopped to render aid. I was the first one on the scene. A young man had been trying to change a tire and was killed by another car that lost control. I had never seen anything so horrible in my life. It terrified me. There was nothing I could do for the young man, he was gone but it is a picture I will always have in my mind. I think about his family every Thanksgiving and wonder if they ever had another happy Thanksgiving again. If it was hard on me, I can't imagine what the family went through. I had trouble sleeping for months and couldn't stand to be alone at night for a long time. Hard to describe what it did to me. I guess the EMTs are used to it but it messed me up.
Well, I love coming to the porch and being able to pray for people's needs. Sometimes it's hard, though, isn't it? I hurt so much for people but it is worth it to be able to pray for them in their hour of need.
Thanks be to God for his abiding love and his comfort. Someday sorrows will cease forever, as for now we must be mindful of the needs of our fellow man. We are our brother's keeper. Love to all this Thanksgiving!

Hope the Porch had many a good Thanksgiving dinner filled with lots of yummy goodies and loving family.
I have not done any "Christmas" decorating yet as I like to savor Thanksgiving for quite a while. We keep up our artificial tree all year and decorate it for all the holidays (easier than putting it up and taking it down every year!) Anyway, our Thanksgiving decorations are just beautiful. It's in the dining room and we decorate it with white and orange mini lights, gold and orange leaf tinsel garland, clusters of fruit shapes on leaves (plastic of course), a few small pinecones, some cute little straw scarecrows, and an open weave burlap-like twisted garland. The tree makes the dining room sparkle elegantly. I also used my new 'old' set of china for the first time this year with candle holders from around the 30s. My dining room really looked like an early 1900s setting. I just love the atmosphere of the past.... peaceful, graceful... I love it. The food was pretty good too! Everyone pitched in so I didn't get too tired to eat either. Our Pretzel and Gracie got to enjoy a bit of turkey too although, Gracie is not a turkey lover and kept looking for the ham! She'll have to wait til Christmas! She did get a dish of mashed potatoes and gravy though which she enjoys. Now they are waiting for the pumpkin pie.... with LOTS of whipped cream, please! Til then I see that they are curled up by the fire enjoying the end of the day. Hope all of you have enjoyed your day too. Pretzel and Gracie say hey and Happy Thanksgiving to Sugarplum and all their other pet porch pals.
Salty Dog, many, many prayers for the young girls, their families, the EMTs, and you. May the Lord comfort them greatly.
God Bless you all, ~Clara~

Thanks Mary wiggins and Clara, for sharing your Thanksgiving with us. I have to say my Thanksgiving was one of the best this year. Nothing went wrong! The food was great and the relatives got along AND it was cold outside instead of 80 degrees. We even put a fire in the fireplace last night. The house was so cozy with the lights from the tree, the candles and the burning log in the fireplace. We had dinner at my sister's then we came to my house for dessert. I made pumkin pie and lemon meringue pie. It was a good day. My parents are elderly and not in great health so I am very thankful for every Thanksgiving I have with them. Here's a funny note: my dad tried to make a pecan pie for Thanksgiving and over cooked it badly. He brought it with him anyway and when my yankee brother-in-law saw it, he poked at it and said to my dad, "Did you get this pie in South Dakota, at that little bakery just outside of the petrified forrest?". How rude!lol Luckily, dad laughed.
Well, now it's on to the Christmas countdown.....

Afternoon Y'all! Let me add a big " Thank You" to Floyd for all he does to allow us to have such a place as The Porch. You're the cats,Floyd!
Salty, last time I posted, you must have been posting too about the loss of the teenage girls up your way. That's just so sad. Sorry to hear how it's affecting everyone-prayers for all involved.
Speaking of prayers, could I ask y'all to say a few for a possum friend of yours? Went to the doctor today for sinus trouble, but the doctor zeroed in on something else he noticed. Wants me to come back Monday afternoon to have the other doctor check it out. It's a lump/knot of some kind which I know has been there forever-which would mean it's nothing to worry about, but still... Plus, my father died of non-hodgkins lymphoma when he was 39. All sorts of things are running through my head,as you can imagine. Keep a good thought for me,would you? Thanks-love you guys!

Hi everyone. Hope you are having a good day. I have been having a hectic one. I would like to ask my porch friends to please pray for my Colorado trip. We are supposed to leave tomorrow and I had to take my baby girl to the dr today because she is running a fever. Doc says its a virus but could turn into Bronchitis so she gave an antibiotic to use if she needs it later. I just am hoping she gets better soon. Ya'll know how long we have been looking forward to this trip. Thanks, friends, I greatly appreciate your prayers. Love to all.

We had our official family thanksgiving meal today with family from out of town. One of my mom's cousins has two violins that were owned by her great grandfather. She had been wanting to see them for so long and today he brought them over and gave one to her for a Christmas present. Needless to say the tears were a flowin. She plans on having it restored and seeing if my darlin boy could fiddle her a song on it. It would be mighty sweet music to her ears. Hope all had a good weekend. We are full and happy.
I will find out the results of my MRI on the 13th.
It was a lower lumbar spine MRI and they are talking about fusing some vertabrae. I don't know if I should be scarred or relieved. They say if you are living in pain that it can improve your quality of life. But then I have heard bad things too, so who do you believe.
Well it's time for me to hit the ironing board. When I was young and partying, this is just the time that I would be getting started, but these days I am all wound down by now. We're no spring chickens any more Bee.

Prayers for your baby girl, Boo. Hope you can still make the trip you've been so looking forward to.
You can say that again, fun girl. I even LIKE going to bed at 9 o'clock these days! Imagine that... never thought I'd get that OLD! Yup, I think I'm even gettin past the roasting age... as chickens go, almost into the stewing age I think. But, the fried chicken age when I was just a spring chicken is done long gone!
Anyway, I pray whatever you decide to do for your back works wonders for you. I have one or two (more keep coming!) of those dang herniated discs. Doc Andrews told me it was just because I'm no spring chicken any more! I really didn't like hearing that at all! Then last year the OBGYN told me I had to have a hysterectomy cause things were no longer where they's sposed to be! As if that weren't enough, my belly was full of "adhesions" that took more than four hours to cut through just so she could get to the old used parts she was after in the first place!.... oh, now I hope I didn't make you nervous... anyway, it was a whole different operation!
Keep us posted, Possum, on your doctor's visit.
Hey to everyone else and God bless you all.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I know I'm a little late, but I too had to travel to Indiana(I wonder if we were going to the same place, Charlotte) to the monste, er, the mother-in-laws for Thanksgiving and I didn't know we were also going to a little family reunion on Saturday. I thought we were just going for Thanksgiving and then probably leaving the next day or the day after that, so I had only packed one other thing to wear. We ended up staying until Sunday.
I hope nobody noticed. If you were there at the family reunion, Charlotte, I was the one in the smelly, wrinkled clothes.(and no, I've never heard of an iron.)
No, it was an ok time. It was held in a big old house, and I like big old houses. I'm very glad to be back, though. That's a ten hour drive from where I live and that gets to be a bit much. Even for someone who enjoys driving as much as I do.
I guess history history kinda repeated itself Thursday, huh Mavis? You know, Cowboys and Indians?! ;)
Since I missed the "what we're thankful for" thing, I hope you don't mind if I mention mine now.
I'm thankful for my family, my lovely little girl, the beauty of nature, the country I live in(is there any better?!), a President with some values(remember the last one we had? Pheeewww!), my friends on the porch, the porch itself for being here(Floyd), And Andy Griffith for making such a decent show in the first place.
Have a good day everyone!

Howdy, friends! I'm still out here on the Florida end of the porch, and having a wonderful time. My son just left to take my DIL to the airport - she's going to Chicago on business, returns the day I leave (Wed), so he and I will just hang out and clean up leftovers! I've made three Christmas wreaths, and have three more to finish before Wednesday. For some reason, all the neighbors and DIL's family out here think I have a talent for them, so I've assembled them when asked. Fortunately, it's something I thoroughly enjoy doing. I've been so busy that I just now sat down to catch up with the porch. Mercy, a lot has happened.
First of all, TOM came back, even if it was just a brief visit. We needed that poem he posted. Somehow, he always gets it just right.
Fun Girl, lots of prayers for you. So sorry about your friend's son. I agree, guns are scary things. My dear husband never hunted, my sons don't, and I'm grateful. I have no quarrel with those who hunt out of need, to feed themselves. I also realize that someone kills the chickens or cows or pigs that become the meat I buy at the store. I'm just saying that I know I couldn't do it. The soft, innocent eyes would get to me every time. Now, Fun Girl, about your back surgery question. To do or not to do? I'll tell you what the surgeon told my mother when my father was refusing to have a needed back surgery. He said, "Don't worry, when the pain gets bad enough, he'll do it." And he did. No pain since.
Mavis, I'm sorry Jake had to miss having TG with his dad, but am so glad Pat is out of the hospital. There'll be other visits.
Salty, what a tragedy, the two girls who drowned. You know, once I would have asked, "Why, Lord?" and been distressed when there was no answer, and guilty for asking. Repeated trials have taught me that it's OK to ask why, because in reality, that's an acknowledgement that there is an answer, and that God knows what it is. Otherwise, why ask Him? He doesn't always tell us, but just knowing that He knows and is in control, is really enough.
Possum, dear, I'm glad you're getting that lump checked out. Very likely, it's nothing, but you'll appreciate the peace of mind.
Well, friends, guess that's more than enough for now. My apologies, friend Floyd, for filling things up again. We do indeed appreciate you. Have a lovely day, friends. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

I know, deep down, a lot of the people I saw today would love a loooonnnngggg visit to Mayberry, they can act tough and all that but I think everybody is longing for a place where everyone is kind to one another and has a ready smile for their friends and neighbors. Sound an awful lot like heaven, doesn't it?!

Briscoe, I like your picks on Holiday movies. I have never seen Sun Valley Serenade, however. What is that one about and who is in it? I would have to add to your list A Christmas Carol. I like the old ones, but I also like the one with George C. Scott.
Hey to Possum,
I hope all goes well with your doctor appointment. Years ago, I had a lump on the back of my wrist and some one told me it was a calcium deposit and that I should whack it with a bible. I did and it went away! (Wonder what causes that?)
