August 21, 2001 - Msg 1846: Good Afternoon Porch ...

A Cappella

August 21, 2001 - Msg 1847: Those younguns, they keep us laughing. My friend from school has a mother who is in a nursing home and she goes over and watches TAGS with her mom of the evening and Karen (she's about 46 said, "Isn't he such a good looking man." (about Andy) and on of the little old ladies asked, "Oh is that your son?" What a hoot.

Here is hoping all are happy and content. If not get a snort of Colonel Harvey's and listen to the Darling play a little "Get on Home Little Cindy."
That'll perk any one up.

Homemaker, I'm tired, so very tired. School makes me have tired blood.

August 21, 2001 - Msg 1852: Fun Girl, you're right, that nursing home story was funny. It's the little things in life that give us a chuckle. Thanks, Asa for trying to cheer me up. I'm a-trying to be cheerful! Homemaker, we miss you not posting so much. Yes, I'll make breakfast tomorrow. Will homemade cinnamon rolls be ok? No sausage or bacon. Trying to cut down on the ol' cholesterol. Just a cinnamon roll and a glass of milk, that's the menu. - Hazel

August 23, 2001 - Msg 1875: Yes! And fresh squeezed orange juice. Or should we have Mulberry squeezins'? I thought maybe you was too busy to stop by the porch Asa, cause you were cleaning up your golf balls or something like that for the weekend. - Hazel

Asa
I've never had Mulberry squeezin's. That good is it?

August 23, 2001 - Msg 1877: Hey folks, nice porch sitting day. Did my share. I watched the squirrels and birds play and the birds singing and eating at the bird feeder and then the next time I went out they were gone and all I heard was locusts. Then later today my furry and feathered friends were back to entertain me. Free entertainment from God. Please say prayers for Aunt Louise who fell on her face, waiting results of MRI. She is at home but in bed. She is 56. Also I've mentioned prayers for a guy named Neil, he is worse.
Well folks, it bedtime here. It is always nice to come set a spell, take my shoes off (put clothes pins on yer noses) and talk about the weather and what's for breakfast or lunch. How about some pimento cheese sandwiches with buttered toasted white bread, some potato chips and a dill pickle strip with some lemonade for lunch tomorrow at Walker's Drugstore. Stop by anytime. I'll make them while you catch up on all the "gossip".

August 24, 2001 - Msg 1878: Good mornin' to the Porch. Nice to see ever'body. Hazel, I hope you're in better spirits. Just remember the old saying, "Always walk around with a smile on your face; that way, complete strangers will come up to you and say, 'WHAT'S SO %$@# FUNNY?!?!'" :-)

Asa, I'm sorry I haven't been able to get over to your place for some'a that good ol' corn you got. If you could, just leave a bag of ears next to your mailbox, and I'll have the milkman pick it up on his rounds tomorrow. The milkman does still come by your house before mine, right? I think that'll work.

Speakin' of work, I'm gonna hafta find another line of work myself. These late night/early mornin' hours are gonna kill me dead. Anybody got any good suggestions for a career change? I want to be able to work as much (or as little) as I want, make as much money as I can, and have all the time I need to take care of the house and spend time with family and friends. That's not too much to ask, is it?

God bless you, friends. I'll see ya.

Hey to Miss Ellie. Prayers go out to your friends. You asked where I live at. I live in Utah. About 40 miles north of Salt Lake City. If you watch the mens down hill Olympic events in Feburary at Snow Basin, You'll be close to my neck of the woods.

I went for those dad burn exrays a week ago today and they still have not told me what the results

I would like to eat a big old corned beef sandwich for lunch today. I think I'll run over to the City

August 28, 2001 - Msg 1937: Hey folks,
Just decided to take a few minutes to say howdy. Everything is so busy here these days, but I try to sit down once in a while and keep up on what is going on in Mayberry. I went to Mt. Pilot today for some physical therapy and although they made me do lots of exercise that hurt me bad, they promised next time to give me one of them there massages. (hope that ain't one of them illegal kind) After as much as they tortured me with them exercises, it's the least they could do.

School is in full swing and I am having to get up at 5:45 every morning which is not easy for someone who is not slender and high spirited. (wish I was) But the kids are real fun and I really do need the routine to keep me in line. Either that or a short stay at THE ROCK.

Sorry to hear about the bandstand. I haven't had a lesson yet, but I can make some powerful loud sounds on my violin. Got time to breathe, got time for music. I will sign off for now. Sweet dreams to you all.
Fun Girl

August 28, 2001 - Msg 1938: Evenin', Porch...
There's nothin' quite makes you feel your years like marryin' off a young 'un. While I have a six year old (the Huckleberry Boy) my oldest turned 22 today & got hitched last Saturday. My, what a beautiful bride she made. Got married at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard Chapel & had her reception at the Admiral's Mansion. It was bittersweet. She used the tune "Hyfrodol" for one of her hymns. It's the same tune used at her Grandpa's funeral lo these many years ago. Oddly, he was discharged from the Naval Submarine Service in 1952 at, you guessed it, Mare Island in the San Francisco Bay. I think he must've looked in. I felt him and the love he holds for his first grandchild.

I saw a cottage there I fell in love with. It's in Benicia. It's dark green with off white trim just yards from the shore. It has a white picket fence just covered with Morning Glories. I could live there peacefully. Has that same "Mayberry Feel" about it.

Just wanted to stop in and share a bit of the ambiance. Fall Ball starts Sunday & Boy Scouts start tomorrow night. Feel the heartbeat of creation, gentlefolk. You guys have your fingers on that pulse like no others I've met.

Blessings, Jake

August 28, 2001 - Msg 1939: Howdy Jake wondered where you went to lately! Good to see you back. Just wanted to say hey to the porch, been busy, busy, busy, grooming all them puppies' feet, no Cujos lately tho thank goodness! Hope it stays that way a while!

Hello everyone ! Hope all those ailing are feeling better. Aunt Louise had no breaks on her fall. Neil is not doing well. Each surgery is supposed to be the last, but more holes keep coming into his intestines. This has been going on over a year now. He is depressed and having panic attacks. He and his family are a long way from home. Please continue to pray.
Floyd, I'm having a problem, I am getting WBMUTBB P&P, but can't send any, they keep coming back. I tried unsubscribing so I could resubscribe and that was sent back to me also. I have the same email address, just a different computer.
I appreciate all you folks prayers as this is the only way now I have to ask.
TOM, your posts are inspirational.
My family and I went to Topsail Island for the day Saturday, picking up our friend Hilda along the way. We had a good time. Hilda, on home dialysis is not well. She is usually the life of the party and she fell asleep on the way home. She was quieter than usual even when she wasn't sleeping. Pray for her too.
Saturday we went to the Ava Gardner Museum in Smithfield and got there and they were having a tea party. The admission was triple, so we left. I would have paid it but I felt underdressed. I felt like Ernest T. Bass at Mrs. Wiley's.
Lots had on hats like Ava Gardner wore. One lady had dark hair, was dressed just like Ava Gardner. We went on to eat at Smithfield BBQ, which was a disappointment. Gosh, the whole day just not up to what we had hoped.
Rent a car, drive all that ways and for what "HEARTACHES".

August 29, 2001 - Msg 1946: correction, Sunday we drove to the Ava Gardner Museum. OH, and I want to add how nice it is that the Mt. Airy Visitor's Center is free and you don't have to be all dressed up to go. Just made me appreciate it so much more. And the MAVC is in such a big pretty house with that lovely garden out back and the Ava Gardner Museum is downtown in what looks like it was once a theater and they paid $1 million for that. How sad. It used to be in the home where she lived from age 2 to 12 and they moved it.

Living and Giving.
The days of my life
are spent living for Jesus,
and loving each day that I live,
the best of my life
is in giving for Jesus,
and giving the most I can give.
In observing the words
that are taught in the Scriptures
each day, that on earth I may live,
I fine that my cup
runneth over with blessings
and I get back far more than I give!

August 30, 2001 - Msg 1956: Hey Mavis, nearly every time we hear from you it's a message with an ironing board in it. Is that secret code or have you never heard of permanent press.
Mrs. Wiley, I am feeling tolerable well. I hate to exercise, but I must admit that those exercises are helping a bit.
Well, I am just plum tickled about my labor day plans. My darling boys will be here from Michigan and I have my first fiddle lesson tomorrow. Maybe Emory and I can play a fiddle duet, if we can play a song where I only have one note. I'm 'bout
to drive my hubby to drink just playing around on it, but Little Opie really has a knack for the fiddle.
I think I will buy Little Charlene (the neice) a tamborine so she can join in on the music. She does love music, but her real love is the ballet.
Hello to all my porch sitting friends. Hope you have a wonderful labor (free) day on Monday.

August 30, 2001 - Msg 1957: Old enough for toilet training,
Old enough for music. FG

August 30, 2001 - Msg 1958: Hey FG - I am done with that toilet training stuff...shoot my boys were rocking to the beat of the church organ before they were born. You should hear the oldest one (age 4) sing Devil Went Down to Georgia or our favorite - I am a Man of Constant Sorrow by the Soggy Bottom Boys!
School is wearing me out - I think it is the 4:45 - 5:00 mornings. I have 6 resource students at all different levels and then I commence to traveling from school to school.
By the way FG - our high school team played yours on Friday night. How many water breaks do your boys need? We got smoked - we were not pleased. I think it is good we don't talk high school football.
Asa did you used to play football? With all that chicken throwing and leg o' lamb throwing. . .well I just figured you was one of them halfbacks or fullbacks or something.
Well - take care you all.

August 30, 2001 - Msg 1961: Hey Homemaker, Lord you a sight for sore eyes. Little Opie loves Devil Went Down to Georgia. He used to not like music much at all, but for the last year and a half he has really started to enjoy it. Well homemaker, I must be truthful and say that I have never been a great fan of football. If you were to bring up basketball, that might rise my blood pressure a little bit, but I think that those we love and cherish are far more important than sports or rivalries.

I do not know much about the sports in this town, but I sure have been blessed with wonderful friends and with work which I truly enjoy.
My first violin lesson is tomorrow and I am very excited.
Looks like I am surrounded by blessings on all sides.

August 30, 2001 - Msg 1962: "THE SOGGY BOTTOM BOYS?" THAT IS WHAT WE CALLED MY DARLING BOYS BEFORE THEY WERE POTTY TRAINED.
(tee hee) Do you reckon that they are related?
FG

August 30, 2001 - Msg 1963: Fun Girl and Homemaker, did you watch the Andy last night? It was the one where Opies front teeth were missing and he asked Barney: Do you want me to "thing a thong", (for sing a song). I think you two and all your talented families should get together and "thing a thong"!
Good to hear from you both. - Hazel

August 31, 2001 - Msg 1964: Good Morning Mayberry!!! -- Floyd

August 31, 2001 - Msg 1965: It's Friday. We just about got her whipped. And a long holiday weekend staring us in the face.
I did play some football in High school Homemaker, but alas, my heart was big but my body wasn't big enough. At 6 feet tall and 140 pounds there just wasn't enough of me to play. Couldn't put on weight to save me either. (wish I still had that problem) So I am resigned to playing pasture pool, and weeding Hazel's garden. I am considering going pro. I think I have the talent to do well. And being in a different city every weekend sounds kinda fun. There is never going to be a shortage of gardens needing weeding.
Have a nice trip to Washington Hazel. Drive safely and bring me back some apples.
I hope everyone has a great and safe weekend.

Asa

August 31, 2001 - Msg 1966: Morning, porch. Yes, we made it to Friday. We're leaving on our trip after work tonight, Asa. I'll bring you back some apples, maybe even make you an apple pie. I might try to check in, if our kinfolk have a computer I can use. Everyone have a good weekend! I layed in some extra supplies for you, since I won't be here to cook. 2 loaves of bread, 4 pounds of hamburger, 2 dozen eggs... and and
if you try any funny business, I'll let "Al" have it.
- Hazel

August 31, 2001 - Msg 1967: Well everyone sounds chipper this morning. It's raining cats and dogs here. We have soggy bottom goats right now.
Our Labor Day plans include going to trading festival (chickens, goats, all kinds of critters) and an Amish auction and whereever else the wind blows.
Thank you Hazel for doing the shopping - I just don't seem to have time to get it done now. I do love Washington Apples (I have kin there too - Wenatchee, near Mount St. Helens, and near Seattle).
Go with that golfing thing Asa - you could be real celebrity and we can all say we knew you when you were on the porch sipping lemonade and watching fireflies.

Have a grand day!

August 31, 2001 - Msg 1968: The hubby started taking golf lessons when he was twelve to keep him out from in front of the t.v. He played in high school and loves the game still. He just got a new set of Callaways and some new golf shoes, so he is a happy man. He talks about going on the senior tour someday. My first fiddle lesson is in about three hours and I am really excited. Just wanted to check in and tell everyone hello and to have a good weekend.
Be good and take care of yourselves.

August 31, 2001 - Msg 1969: Hey porch, I'm going to go down to Wallys & get a soda. Never know what new flavor he'll have. Then I'll go home & watch tv.

August 31, 2001 - Msg 1970: Hey, I'll go down to Wally's for a bottle a pop with ya. I got a mean hankering for a grape nehi.
Anyone else wanna go up town for a bottle a pop.
Fun Girl
P.S. Maybe have a little cashew fudge or some brownies with walnuts and pecans.

August 31, 2001 - Msg 1971: Oh forgot to say, I just got back from my first violin lesson. It ain't gonna be easy but everything beautiful takes time and effort. Just hope that some day I can make beautiful music on it. Right now it just seems like alot of rules and no music. F.G.

August 31, 2001 - Msg 1972: Howdy Porch, lots to read here! Hazel, hope ya have a nice safe trip - "happy motoring!". Everything's ok here...just really busy at work. They got a new espresso machine - a gift from a client. I'll bet we did more work this week than the last 3 weeks combined! Surprising what a little 'jolt' in the afternoon will do for a slender high-spirited staff.

FG, I'll have a lil cashew fudge - maybe watch one of them doctor shows with ya. I played the violin in 3rd grade - didn't have the patience to learn to read the music. I'll bet your darlin' ones can't wait to have you join in on "Soggy Bottom Blues".

Prayers for all that needs them! ~Mrs. Wiley

August 31, 2001 - Msg 1973: Permanent press? What's that FG I was talking about puttin the ironing board between 2 chairs, don't you know that's adventure sleeping? Where you been lady? LOL I'll be heading to Myrtle Beach for the labor day WEEK with my significant other, we need it badly! Been so busy at work can't see straight, or was that Asa hitting me with a leg o lamb that caused me not to see straight? I just wish he was there with that leg o lamb when Cujo tried to take my hand off. LOL
Better go for the night, I will check in before we leave for the beach. Hey to all of thems that I didn't mention.
