December 12, 2000, 8:08 am Msg #1248
Well, it would be nice to have a president elect for Christmas! Let's think back to our childhood and try to remember the greatest present we ever received. My parents had very little money, but one year I got a doll that I still treasure. Other than that we got a stocking full of candy, fruit and nuts. That was a real treat for us because we very seldom got candy and fruit to eat. I think back to those times and realize how special it was. Happy Holidays, cgirl

December 12, 2000, 12:19 pm Msg #1249
What I remember most about my childhood Christmas's is the Christmas Eve candlelight services at our church. I was surrounded by family and friends. With the church dark except for the little candles we held, it was magical. Familiar hymns and beautiful music added to the magic. From a very young age, I learned how precious the true meaning of Christmas really is.

Look at the 2 choices we have for president. Do you really want a president-elect that bad? haha.
I can remember as a teenager, our youth group at church used to go carolin' and take some of the older members of your church fruit baskets. I used to love the carolin'. That was the best.

Lillian, you made my day with your post...I just LOL, read it to Hubby.

My Aunt Dorothy is better, but still hospitalized and will be at least until Monday when her doctor gets back from out of town and then he will decide if she needs to stay longer, can go home or to a nursing home. She has been bedridden since March of 1999. Thanks for all the prayers and concern.

Tom, we got your most beautiful card today, thanks. I'm trying to make all mine on the computer and I'm running WAY behind.

Idelle, prayers for a speedy recovery.

I had so MANY special Christmas's, but I guess what I wish I could recapture most ( or had taped when Daddy was living ) was him singing "Will Santa Come to Shanty Town?". My Daddy had a lovely voice and played the guitar well and he was so poor growing up, when he sang that song, I always thought of his childhood. But as one thing I think we can all be thankful for are the years we had with those who has passed away.

It's been a very hectic week. I've not spent a whole day home all week (and I don't work outside the home...don't work too much inside the home). Anyways, good to see all who do post and wish more would come.

My cousin in California found her 34 year old boyfriend dead this morning..they think a heart attack. He just got a clean bill of health from his doctor. His sister just died one year ago today of cancer. My cousin has no family near by to support her in this time of loss. Please pray for her and for her boyfriend's parents.

Awwww....thanks, folks...for the kind words. I don't think I'm that great of a daughter. My Mom raised three kids by herself, and she gave up so very much for us. There is no way I could ever do enough to show her my love and gratitude for all she's done. It's just a shame that we don't realize that as kids, you know? When I think back on all the things I asked for "Santa" to bring me, I just cry. If I had only known...my wish list would have been VERY small. But you know what? Somehow, Santa never let me down, and everything was always there! She must have worked herself half to death..no kidding!

Moms are really incredible people....it never ceases to amaze me. As a matter of fact, if it won't bore anyone....I found a really pretty little "poem" type thing, printed it using a really nice font, and used paper that had light blue sky with some clouds and the sun's rays showing through it. I put it in a frame with a nice matte (spelling?), and I gave it to her. I'd love to share it with you, if any of you would like to hear it. I think it sums up a Mother very well. It used "Mommy" in there, but as it was used in the little "poem", I think it fit.

Well, for those of us blessed enough to still have our mothers, and for those of you who still have your fathers, let's not forget to thank God for them during this season and all year 'round.

And by the way, I thank God for all of you wonderful friends, too...you are very special and kind people.

I had to 'hop' a ride to church--had to play for the service at 9 this a.m. WAAAY too cold to get out, but I did anyway. We had a wonderful day...guess what Orville got me? C'mon, guess. Guess! WILL YOU JUST GUESS?!?

He got me a genuwine, authentic candlestick telephone! It needs fixin, and had had to outbid Mr. Schwump on Ebay (seriously!), but he got it, and *I* got it today! I'm thrilled! We had a good 'un. Hope y'all all did.

Must be another Schwump out there because it wasn't me who outbid you. I bid my schwumpster anyway. Who knows, maybe there's two of me out there.

Elinora, that phone sounds cute. Hope you folks warm up, up north. It has been cold here for us, but nothing like you guys have had. I know I've said that a hunderd times here, but we just ain't used to 12 degrees at night. Our house isn't really well insulated and at my computer the old part (75 years probably) joins the new part (probably 30 years old) and the cold air pours in at the junction. I think I'm going to invest in having a feller come out here and put in that blow in insulation. The house isn't that hot in the summer, but cold in the winter and I rarely turn the heat down past 64 degrees.

Did anyone have to return any canning jars or bed jackets today? Not me .... didn't get near a mall. We went to visit with Granny..moving awful slow and felt bad. Bless her heart.

Everyone have a nice night.

Oh, well, hmmm. Mr. Schwump wasn't the name on the phone bid, it was BROSE, and when he (Orville) looked at the history part, he said it was Brian Rose, so he thought it was OUR Mr. Schwump. Guess there's another Brian Rose out there who wanted a candlestick phone. Doesn't matter, he didn't get it, *I* did, haha. Cold tonight, it's 5 above zero right now. But hey! That's 33 degrees warmer than yesterday morning, isn't it? Hit a few sales today, got a few niceties, and got broke all over again, so I'll stay outta the stores for a few weeks till I can check for loose change in the sofas after the next visitation at the funeral home. :^)

NRNMG, did I see that right. 50 inches of snow as in one more than 49. Goodness gracious. Here in southwestern VA, we've got about 3. I'm like Elinora, I'd love to see a bunch more. Course where I live in the area, we always get a couple of more inches than everyone else around. My pond's been frozen solid now for goin' on 3-4 weeks. Been thinkin' about goin' ice skatin'. We had a high of 35 the other day. Sorry Elinora, don't think I'm braggin'.

Meant to mention, I'm in the process of writing TAGS trivia game for computers. The easy part is gonna be coming up with the code. Probably only take 1-2 months for that. The hard parts gonna be coming up with some questions. Hopin' to see if Opie still has his questions from his calendar. But I probably am lookin' at puttin' 500-1000 questions in the game and you only answer 25 randomly at a time, so that you don't get the same ones over and over.

What I'm gettin' around too, is that I'll probably be askin' y'all for help for questions, if you don't care. Everything from easy to hard. The more the better. I'll keep you updated. Thank goodness for the cold weather now, it let's me stay in and work on it. I'll let you know when I'm done with the program and need questions.
Thanks

Well, howdy folks! Don't know whose underline this is, but I do know it isn't mine, 'cause I don't know how to make it! Hope everyone had a great Christmas - readin' all the above, it looks like you did. Personally, I worked as usual on the "real" Christmas, then my family had ours this past Thursday and Friday. That way, my kids got to spend their holiday with their in-law families, and the hospital thinks I'm great 'cause I was okay with working. Our weather was decent, cold but not icy, though one daughter and family drove through some MAJOR snowfall just south of here, with it ending abruptly just a few miles south of me. Talkin' of Christmasses past - I recall as a child always attending the Christmas Eve services at our little church, complete with candles and carols. It always ended with "Santa" arriving and passing out little red nylon/plastic net stockings to the children, containing an orange, a small apple, peppermint cane, and a handful of assorted nuts. Christmas wouldn't have been the same without that stocking. There was always a little play as well. The year I was three, I played a sheep, wearing a white sweater and little white felt ears. We sang a lullaby to the baby Jesus. After the service, we would go to the home of one of my dad's sisters, or perhaps back to our house, and have our family Christmas Eve gathering. Everyone would be dressed up, the house was decorated, there was always a cranberry punch as well as a sherbet and ginger ale punch, and lots of little sandwiches and beautifully decorated cookies. We would open our gifts, and as one of the few children (and the only girl)- I always received a nice gift from each of my five aunts. Then we'd return home to bed, and in the morning we'd see what Santa had brought and open our own family gifts. Then we'd go to dinner at my grandmother's on my mother's side for Christmas Day. I never took any of the toys I had received, because my cousins on that side were numerous, all male, and would break everything before the day was over. It's funny - looking back now, I know the gifts weren't expensive, and I can remember other evidence that money was tight. The houses were small, the furniture sometimes a bit shabby, but what a sense of love and security surrounded us all. I wouldn't trade it for Trump's millions. I think it was all based on that tiny church and the message of love it projected into our lives. Most of my extended family attended there, too - my great-grandfather started it and was the first pastor. I wish everyone in the world could have had the start in life that I received, and I will forever be grateful to my parents for giving me that foundation upon which to build my own life. Happy New Year, friends!--Romeena
